[Q] Random reboots, Desire Z w/ official 2.3.3 - could factory reset fix this? - G2 and Desire Z General

I'm asking since I complained about this issue to HTC customer service and they recommended a factory reset due to a possibility that the Gingerbread update had created a conflict with the previously installed firmware.
Either that or possibly a defective main board - which would require me to send my DZ in for repair (Oh, the horror of being stuck with my emergency phone, a Nokia 6300, for three weeks!). And that would probably not fix anything except if they gave me a new phone right away.
The former option might be worth a try even though it sounded like complete horse crap but I just wanted to make sure before having to re-install avery app and set up my homescreen all over again.
The issue is killing me! So far I've had two random reboots today, both of which happened with the screen off and no apps open. It has also happened a few times while playing Angry Birds Rio and in the middle of a phone conversation - the latter being the most annoying.

I have same problem. Reboots and homescreen restarts. I red that fa reset not working on homescreen restarts on another forum.

I did a factory reset after updating to 2.3 yesterday i havent noticed any problems yet but its been less than 12 hours since i set my phone and all my apps back up. Prior to doing the factory reset i noticed some minor interface errors including one homescreen reset but no actual phone reboots. Must say the look of the new sense including the quick settings in the pull down bar was well worth it

So factory reset is the best way to fix bugs, i see that factory reset can solve all of its. Good news

Thanks for your feedback, guys!
I think I'll do a reset tonight if I can find the time.
Will report back if this fixes the issue

Same problems here, from time to time I hear the HTC boot sound, meaning it's been restarting by itself. At least once a day. Also I often get the Sense iterface re-loading after I use some apps. All of this happened after I updated to 2.3.3, before that it ran flawless for more than 8 months.
I'll factory reset these days, but I really hate backing up, installing and configurig everything again.

Me too. Stock 2.2 to stock 2.3 unlocked. I was so annoyed that I uninstalled all the programs that kick in at start up (like British Airway's app, Continental, Sky News & so on & my phone now works like it did before, no restarts, no freezing, nor Sense restarts (unless I'm installing a lot or uninstalling a lot of programs)...
Sense restarts as there's low RAM in the device right? And when it's super low, it restarts the whole phone?

Been getting the same on DZ update when it came out for Europe. And it literally made me switch do CM7. My line of thought was if I was going to do factory reset I could as well switch to platform which will give me more up-to-date Android on updates...

Ok, so I went through the tedious process of doing a factory reset and setting my phone up all over again.
This was on Saturday and I've had no random reboots so far. What I did have today, though, was my phone suddenly being dead until I removed the battery, put it back in and turned the phone on again. This has happened many times before with 2.2.1 and is a known issue but this is the first time it happened after upgrading to 2.3.3 - hopefully also the last.
Sense is still restarting constantly

The same for me. Some of the problems are gone after the factory reset, but Sense keeps reloading after I install/update apps in Market or after using some apps. It never did that in 2.2.

Dead phone issue happened again just before *sigh*

A little update:
The factory reset seems to have actually fixed brightness setting itself on max even though Sense often restarts.

Non-rooted Vibrant random restart?

It seems to happen after the phone has been on for an extended amount of time. I don't have lag, and I'm not using the gps when it happens. In fact, it usually happens when I sleep. Has anyone else experienced this? My phone is not modified. I'm even running plain touch whiz. I'm considering returning if I can't resolve with a hard reset. No third party apps are running when this occurs. I routinely close processes before I stop using the phone. I love this phone, I'm just worried I have a bad unit.
i'm having a similar issue, but with a rooted vibrant. the problem has spanned across two different handsets. the first one i rooted almost out of the box. but after a few days it started locking up after sitting for a while and i would have to pull the battery to get it to come back on. so i returned it, got a new one and held off rooting it to see if this one would do the same thing. the non rooted one had no problems at all, so i bit the bullet and rooted this one too, and sure enough later that same day it started doing the same freezes when trying to unlock it.
as soon as i rooted the second phone i downloaded rom manager and made a nandroid backup. after the backup i proceeded to remove some of the bloat, like dual clock, the startup/shutdown sounds, and some of the other crap that the vibrant comes with. i also installed and started up setcpu. it seemed that after i did all of this is when the freezes started up again. so i did a restore to before i removed all that stuff and now the phone is fine again. what is it about my process that is making this phone lock up like this?
EDIT: nevermind...i found some other people with the same problem in a setcpu thread...seems setting the sleep profile too low will cause the phone to not wake up after sitting too long
Uh, I'm not getting any freezing, but I know there is an issue with SetCPU. A certain setting will causes problems on the Vibrant. My issue is just unexpected reboots after the phone has been on for approximately 170 hours.
I had many random restarts and general craziness from my non rooted stock vibrant. A factory restore fixed all problems.

Yeah, if it happens again I'm going to try a factory reset.

SMS Force Close

so i am trying to fix this for a friend. her stock sms app force closes every time you open it. i have cleared the cache and data. no different. i have read that factory resets may fix the problem but they dont give what is causing the problem. which is not a valid argument to factory reset if they are just guessing. its completely stock. no root. any help would be awesome.
I've been having it happen too. Just hold down the power button and selecting restart works. Shutting off the phone once a day is good too

restarting the phone does not work in this case. i have tried a few times.
my wife's MT4G has started to show similar symptoms recently. random force closes, and she will have to reboot to get it to work, but once she reboots all of her messages are gone and smsbackup is not backing it up. Her phone is completely stock no root and never has been. (she won't let me touch it ) lol

My wife is the same way and her phone was buggy too...she got the update a week or two ago and so far so good....
the best thing to do is a factory data reset,as to why its force closing, it could be a simple bug or something went wrong on installing android on the phone. if it continues to keep happening go to t mobile an have them replace it,under warranty. the other option is to root an flash the new 2.3 update for the phone.

Unrooted 9020T Infinite reboot after OTA2.3.6

I'm out of my wits... I spent the past 6 hours hard reset the phone (double wipe + reinstall all the apps) and now it is happening all over again, rebooting about every 3 minutes. Google you should really fire your QA team!!!
Same here! Go back to 2.3.4 GRJ22!

Last night, I went from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 via OTA, and my phone has not stopped re-booting since (every 1-3 minutes)!
I've yet to do a hard reset, as I was hoping coming here to XDA and find that there was another way - without having to do so.
But after reading your comment above, this doesn't give me much hope - that a hard reset will even work.
There are 2 open tickets on this issue with Google, many have said that a reset worked for them, and some say removing the Facebook app worked for them, or removing whatever app(s) is running in the background.
This really needs to get fixed ASAP!
Well I guess I am off to do a hard reset, in hope that I am one of the few lucky one's that this gets fixed for. Ugh!
Update: Since doing a hard reset (not wiping the SD of photos/music), it seems to be working now. I did lose (for some odd reason), some the photos associated with my contact list, no biggie - I'll just add those back.
But otherwise, so far so good (knock on wood), no more reboots. Just a real PITA to have to re-install my apps. Oh well, it is what it is... hopefully it continues to work, until Google's next update/fix for this problem.
Also, hopefully the tethering still works, as I haven't tried it out since doing the reset.
Reboots reboots re......
Cant get 2.3.6 to work. Hope ICS comes ASAP (and with FLASH!!!)!

[Q] Why does Mytouch freeze and reboot on battery, but not when charging?

The Stock Mytouch 4g started behaving oddly a couple of days ago with random reboots. Then yesterday it would just turn off completely and the only way to restart it was to pull the battery. At first I believed it to be the battery, so I switched it out with a friend who also has a Mytouch 4g and the same problem exited. The behavior would go away when I plugged the device into an outlet. I decided that I would Perm root and run a custom rom with another Kernel to see if that would help things. However in order to do so, I needed to downgrade to 2.2.1. After downgrading to 2.2.1, a different problem appeared. Instead of randomly shutting down, it would randomly freeze on the screen and then reboot. This time the problem subsided only when it was plugged into an outlet and I took off Sleep mode and screen time out. After perm rooting, I installed Clockwork via rom manager. From there, I installed Bindroid's rom using Unity kernel. At first, there were no problems at all - I played around with it for an hour without any freezing or rebooting. I thought I had solved it, so I put in on charge and went to bed. I woke up, it was still fine. I decided I would do a battery calibration. I wiped the stats from recovery and then installed battery calibrator from the market. I don't know if that retriggered the issue or if the issue was just hiding in the back - waiting to attack... The phone is constantly freezing when off of charge - its even happened a few times while I was in recovery mode.

Any help would be much appreciated.
I hope you are still under warranty. Sounds like hardware to me

Unfortunately, I think so as well. As for an update on the phone, I switched radio firmwares, put in different roms, and mixed and matched kernels - all having the same result. I also cleaned the battery contacts both on the batter and on the phone.
I ended up just listing it on eBay.
Try slipping a piece of paper under the battery cover. Maybe its loose and is allowing the battery to lose contact?

I thought it was the battery as well, but unfortunately it was not. Interesting, I found that if I am on a phone call or downloading a large file it doesn't freeze or reboot. So I guess if the radio or wifi is actively engaged it won't freeze. Also, if I play some games it won't freeze as well. However, as soon as I stop doing something that really engages in the phone it will freeze. For example, if I quit out a game and just scroll around - or if I start typing something in the browser or on gtalk it can just freeze. Most of the time it won't be booted up for more than 5 minutes, unless any of the above is performed. I don't know man - just an odd problem. I am thinking about flashing the Windows Phone 7 rom and see how it works out.
Try a fastboot wipe to really wipe the slate clean.
If that doesn't work, I say flash a PD15IMG.ZIP of froyo and see what happens. Just make sure you have a visionary apk to get root.

I think I might have bought your phone on ebay (papichulo?). Anyway I have the same exact problem. Freezes 5 minutes after booting no matter the combination of ROM/Kernal/Hboot/Recovery.
NEVER freezes in recovery/Bootloader though.
Let me check out your wifi/games/charger theory and see what happens..

Oddest thing. It wont freeze as long as its busy. Even simply playing music in the background does the trick. This is the oddest problem I've ever encountered..

Samsung galaxy s3 crashing and bootloops when not charging

Hi guys just got my s3 couple of hours ago white 16gb for sprint. I tried searching for the issue I am having and no results, so I am posting here. I did the initial android setup and everything was running fine for first 15 min and then phone keeps freezing and restarts, I did many battery pulls and same thing. It would work for min or 2 and freezes and reboots. Then I put the phone on charge and used it for several minutes and no crash.
So I unplugged the phone when the battery was at 52% after charging for more then 45 min, and same reboot issue is back. So I was wondering if anyone else having this issue.
Thanks for all your help in advance.
if you didnt flash things, which i dont even know what you would flash and how at this point, i would say its broken, and you should go get an exchange. Hopefully youre the only one with the issue, ever.
i guess you could try a factory reset, which i would assume you can do from recovery, to which you would maybe get to by powering off, and holing volume up and power(once again, just an assumption).
p.s. i am impatiently waiting untill best buy gets 32gb version in stock so i can trade in this lte evo pos.
i did many factory resets and battery pulls and same issue. so i got tired and called in for exchange, they are sold out right now but will send one out as soon it comes back in stock.
Did you do a hard reset from recovery?

any particular app installed that might be causing this? :crying:
Yes I Reset it from recovery and did factory reset 4 to 6 times, No apps installed. As soon as i start navigating through menus it freezes and then reboots. Sometimes it also freezes at sprint logo while restarting, i have owned 200+ phones never had a single android phone with this kind of Issue.

Do you have a sd card installed? If its from a older phone or s2 it might be the problem too. Back up everything in format the card then see what happens....
Thanks for all your help guys !
I fixed the issue by wiping cache partition and factory reset. Before all I did was factory reset but didn't do wipe.
No crash so far
