Evo Shift has temp root? Anyone want to look into this? - EVO 4G General

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185243

i doubt it works on our phones, but sure someone could try this, worse case is a bricked phone, best case doesnt run at all on the phone to begin with i cant make head nor tails of adb so i wont bother to try this, not to mention i dont wanna brick my only work phone for 2 days before i get a chance to drive to sprint to have it replaced, but perhaps its something to look into?
ive read the thread before , pretty sure people have tried it but , whats one more thing to try?

yeah. read most of it. I believe that could work on the evos. HOWEVER, mine is rooted. so muhahahaha. I won't be needing to do this. lol!

seems like it could work, temp root is pretty useless though

Fr3vo does not work with our phones. Sorry, but no dice.

Noob question

So since mytouch was updated to 2.2.1 is it worth rotting still?
My old mytouch was in pretty bad condition so i never decided to root it... Well it fell in a big puddle of water so im filed a insurance claim and will have my new one Monday. Seeing as it wont be in such beat up condition do you think its worth rooting?
What are some of the benefits from gaining root? Not much of a phone hacking guy lol.
Know my way around a computer very well just i do not know what kind of benefits you will gain once ur root your phone.
I'v seen many links on how to root it not sure which one will be the best as most of them seem a bit old. Not sure if i will get another original mytouch or one with the 3.5mm jack
Not much of a reading guy are you either? It would really only take you 5min to either search here or google benifits of rooting, reasons to root etc....
But, if you cant do that, Id stay away from trying to root yoru phone because you will probably just end up bricking it and blaming it on a hard working developer

Safest way to root intercept for performance

I have a virgin mobile intercept.. second one due to bricking my first one.
I was woundering what the safest way would be to root the phone. I mainly want better performance.. not really worried about anything else.
Hopefully someone could tell me what the safest and most stable kernel and recovery would be. I've been reading up a lot but still confused about what to pick out and what method to use to flash the kernel and recovery.
Thanks all.

It is somewhat laughable all of these wannabe phone modders who brick their phones, then run right back to the retailer where they bought the phone and cry so that they get a new one, then go right back to attempting to brick their phone again.
Hey, here's a thought ....if you brick your phone while attempting to mod it ....its yours...live with it. Don't run back to the retailer like a baby, rather, attempt to unbrick the phone yourself. Maybe then you'll learn something, because lord knows you're not learning modding, 'responsibility' (or anything else) this way.

Lol, he's just the forum douchbag, and of course I'm going to get a new one if I'm under warranty. Far from technologically inclined, of done a lit, just didn't take my time. There's a reason I don't use XDA, the community seems to be filled with smart ass hot heads that don't care to help. Could of at least pointed me in the right direction then sit there and call me a... baby..? Lol.. amusing at the least.

I would recommend
You head over to the dev section - there are a bunch of different ways to root this phone - i personally used the data cable method for my phone and the apk for my girlfriends phone - both have resorted in perma root.
Since you have bricked this device before when attempting to mod it - i recommend you don't worry about custom rom/recovery right away - focus on getting the device rooted and removing some of the annoying bloat with a tool like Root Toolbox or Titanium Backup.
Hope that helps a little. Let me know if I can be of further use.
Search "Samsung Intercept Root sdx" and look for the one about an apk. Worked flawlessly.

I am not as blunt as "old_dude" but I agree completely with his point. When I bricked my first droid, which was a LG Optimus. I spent about 40 hrs at the computer fixing it. But I got it back to perfect working condition. I learned more about "Android" in those 40 hrs than I can describe. Not to mention the pride of fixing something most can't. So if you want to be any kind of Droid person fix it your self. Also alerting retailers to the fact you are trying to root your phone is pretty dumb. Even if you think they don't know, the phone you turned in has a log that lists everything you did from the moment you first turned it on!

[Q] How to Lock up your Nexus one (please read)

I want to demonstrate to someone how the phone can get stuck on something like bootloader or failed rom installations.
I currently have a nexus one with the bootloader still locked (but rooted). I dont want to try anything and render the phone dead. So I want to know if there is a for sure way t put the phone in a mode where it looks as if it doesn't work, yet be able to recover from it easily. Asking for opinions first.
I still want to have my phone maintained such that the bootloader stays locked.
Thanks

Turning the phone off makes it look likes it doesn't work.
P.S why are you doing this though? Really? Is it to make someone think their phone is broken so you can buy it cheap then fix it and keep it?

Didn't think of that. Maybe i should.
No, to make someone understand the process that I go through in updating the phone so that they can stop bothering me while Im doing it.
Edit:
I just realized that your post was so condescending. I asked a question and phrased it accordingly, to "demonstrate."
Don't you just love it when people express their opinion not knowing the entire story.
Try opinionating for the better, the next time.
And yeah, don't forget to help out people every now and then.
Thanks for your HELP!

haha no worries
If i understand what you are asking, try backing up your rom, then flash completely different rom without wiping. That should by all accounts give you a bootloop.
Might be easier to have them watch some youtube vid's of flashing, rooting, unlocking, etc. They then should get the idea...
I would just nandroid and wipe my phone (I dunno how well that'd go I've never tried it but I don't see how it could totally brick your phone, who knows!)
I don't know if you've got anything flashed on your phone, but if not flash a recovery then yeah, flash any different rom without wiping and you should get boot loops.

For the record, I think this is a fair question, and not particularly condescending.
OP: You are asking a legit question, but you have to admit it's a bit of a strange request. You can't blame people for wondering what you're up to, I thought the same thing. Not that you were scamming someone, but couldn't understand why you'd want to do this (I get it now... sort of). It's an impersonal forum, so there shouldn't be any hard feelings.
One thing that constantly caused bootloops in the CyanogenMod forum was to flash the Froyo gapps with a Gingerbread install. Bootloop every time.
You could probably flash a theme that wasn't designed for Gingerbread. I'd bet that would give you a bootloop (especially the further you go back... flash a cupcake theme for a G1 onto an N1 )
Maybe I'm just being cynical but it seems to me that the OP is doing something shady here. He wants to do something that makes no sense and then immediately jumps down the throat of someone who basically calls him for it. His reasoning for why he wants to do this nonsensical thing is also pretty nonsensical. I'd guess he's trying to scam something from someone.

Yes, I completely agree with your first statement. YOU ARE BEING CYNICAL!!!
Ok as an avid lover of my phone (nexus one), I have the right to ask the means of breaking this phone if i'm going to root it and install a ROM which is only supported by the community that helps develop it (that includes primarily folks over at XDA). If you think I'm upto no good, too bad. Assume the worst, do whatever the F*** you want. All I'm trying to do is show my cousin what a bootlooped phone looks like. And apparently each time I am in the process of doing it, he wants to use the pc. He likes killing all the running apps when he's on the PC, and i need to stop him from screwing up something that can potentially f*** up my phone. I often switch from Stock N1 to CM7 to blandroid, and thankfully i follow directions which is why my phone hasn't boot looped til date.
Yes I jumped throat on the 1st person who responded, but look at my response before jumping throat. I didn't really think of the response as condescending, until had posted my answer, hence the edit.
Don't bother posting such crappy posts unless you want to feel like you're getting scolded by the DA's office for wrongful accusation.
C
Well you cannot blame people for coming up with these various speculations. My 2 cents, but you just redirect your energy towards your cousin more rather then get angry over forum post.
The way I see your situation is this. The PC used to flash your phone, who is the owner? If you own it, tell him to wait like a good little boy or he can GTFO of your computer, ban him. Or if the PC belongs to him, maybe it's time you suck it up and respect when and how he wants to use his PC, and flash your phone using another instead. Or maybe get a job and buy your own?
Time to man up. Either you tell him to GTFO of your PC, or you GTFO of his. Simple solution to what I see to a simple matter. No need to complicate things by semi-bricking your phone.

[Q] Brick after loading cm d802 on verizon phone

sigh let's start the horror story. So I rooted my verizon LG G2 (VS980) phone yesterday using this guide:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/10/25/root-lg-g2-versions-video/
I found that pretty easy so i decide to then be more adventurous and load cyanogenmod 10.2 on my phone since I heard it was officially on nightly release for verizon phones. So then i came across this youtube video explaining how to do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_s3eO-jvNWk
I make 3 mistakes in this process:
1. i don't do the settings part
2. i don't wipe the phone
3. and most importantly i download the wrong cyanogenmod 10.2 version. I put the 802 international version on it instead of the verizon version.
Now my phone is stuck with fastboot with a black screen.
I can go into download mode and have tried the following guides:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476
In this one it gets stuck at 49% loading when i use the verizon version
the second:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
here when i start to load it says my device is the wrong model because i loaded the wrong cyanogenmod
Now that i know why my phone wouldn't load the verizon rom (because i had cyanogenmod 802 international). I have successfully loaded the stock 802 rom on my phone. the bad part is the touch screen is all wacky and i can't get into setting to go into developer mode and finally fix my phone.
Any ideas on where i can go from here? If i could just get into developer mode i can restore everything by loading TWRP then loading the cyanogenmod for verizon.
Just an idea, but maybe you could use a mouse via OTG in the meantime.

thanks i didnt know i could use a mouse. I will try to find a cable that will allow me to do that.
I was able to help a few peeps with the same prob get back to stock. Pm me if you need help.
some updates.
I didn't get the mouse to help me around the touch screen. I just memorized where all the new locations where for example the middle of the screen clicked the bottom left
I have been able to get this european 820 stock ROM running on my verizon phone and have it in debugging mode.
All the other flash methods are failing me because i get "different model" error.
I'm currently trying to update my build.prop file so i can get the other flash methods to work since this is the file they are looking at to see if it's ok to flash with the rom you have select. Personally i find that kinda silly. I mean i'm flashing the thing give me an option that say "are you sure you want to do this? you are about to flash your phone with an compatible rom". Yes i'm aware i put the wrong rom on the thing now flash my phone with this one.
Oh it would be great if someone out there could post me their verizon build.prop. Would really appreciate that.
update
don't change the build.prop model number to VS-980. my phone is now in a reboot cycle.
I can get into download mode but i fear that i still won't be able to flash with the right rom because that build.prop is wrong. can i skip this verification step?
I also have twrp running but again it's the European version so the touch screen doesn't work properly. i can't swipe across to do anything even if i wanted to.
I would just do this and start over...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960

nothing against the OP BUT this is exactly why I DO NOT try to do this stuff. There's really no benefit that the stock ROM on this phone cannot do...and more...and I read so many reports of people turning their beautifully working phones into little black plastic paper weights. Simply not worth the trouble, time, and possible money :silly: to get a little more screen space, or a smaller NAV bar, or whatever.
And then so many people want KIT-KAT...WHY? Will it REALLY be that much better than what this thing can do now? Or will it just introduce BUGS like every other update always does to an android device? If, and when this phone gets an update to KIT-KAT or whatever version they decide upon, and it actually works without new bugs, then I will be pleasantly surprised. Here we have what just might be the best android phone to land on earth so far, and people want to "improve" it??? My $0.02

I can't speak to everyone else's why but I do it because I'm an engineer and here is what i mean by that. Ever since I was a little kid I would mess around with stuff even though I had no clue what i was doing. I remember the first time I took apart a stereo was because our living stereo broke (the CD player wouldn't play anymore and that's what it was used for mostly). I told my mom not to throw it away so I could see if I could fix it. I was maybe 10 at the time so of course she knew i couldn't possibly fix but she let me. In the end I couldn't fix it (hell i had screws left over) but it was just fun looking around and exploring. As I grew I still kept doing the same thing, taking things apart and explore. Sometimes I can improve the thing I took apart other times I completely break it but most of the time I can just put it back the way it was originally. That's my why.

Software to me is pure magic, but I'm very happy there's people that can code Roms.
Good luck mate.
Once you fix your phone and it's back to stock it will feel better than sex.
Keep stock for a couple of days and that itching feeling of "i need to do something with this" is gonna come creeping back

[Q] Note 3 4.4.4 ROOT Assistance

Okay, let me start my making a few points first.
1. I just had to retype all of this because of the silly Im not a robot thing.
2. I just joined, yes. I was reading without an account but because I needed help I had to make one. I didnt just waltz in with my question and make an account to be lazy.
3. I dont know what Im doing. I know very little about rooting and little about this forum beyond me reading the posts. Please go easy on me if anything I say or ask is dumb, or if Im breaking any rules. And if Im asking in the wrong place, tell me how and where to move it or help me by doing it yourself if you can. I know a lot of you have been here for some time and new people probably annoy you a lot, Im not trying to.
4. I looked EVERYWHERE. I clicked on a million google links, I read the first several pages of this section, and I did a seperate search on this forum and read those first few pages. I wouldnt ask if I hadnt already tried to find out on my own. I couldnt find anything. I didnt want to post here because I know Id probably have to wait for the right answer if one ever even came and I honestly dont like having to be patient. I would have much rather figured it out on my own. So please dont assume Im stupid or lazy.
5. Im not trying to assume you guys are rude and would be rude to me, Im just not sure and I know its annoying to have a forum full of well versed people and have to direct a noob and save them.
Anyways, I have a Verizon Note 3 on 4.4.4. The last 3 digits of my build number/baseband version are NJ6. Let me know if you need any other information, as Im honestly not sure whats relevant. Ive been trying to figure out how to root my phone for days. I havent been able to find anything for my specific phone. I know Ive seen people whove said theyve rooted 4.4.4 but they either didnt have the same device on the same carrier or they didnt say how. I tried Towelroot and Kingo, neither worked. I havent tried CF auto root because I think you have to restore your device or delete everything and I dont want to do that and have it not work. I also have insurance through Verizon so tripping KNOX doesnt concern me. (when you bring in a broken phone they only check for cracks and broken parts, nothing internal, dont even plug it in. Then they overnight you a new/refurbished one and you send yours back with the same packaging. No checking for root or anything.)
Now, I have 3 main questions here.
1. Can I root my phone on 4.4.4? It needs to specifically work for 4.4.4 on Verizon. If yes, please tell me how and provide links/instructions if you can. Remember, KNOX or not, doesnt matter. I dont care if I have to delete everything either, as long as it works.
2. If I restore my phone to factory settings, will it reboot in 4.4.4 still? Or will it return to 4.4.2 like when I bought it? Im kind of doubting it as a lot of people have bricked attempting to downgrade, so I think they wouldnt have downgraded could they have just restored. Also I know the new KNOX keeps the bootloader locked and prevents any older versions, so I would think it wouldnt allow a phone to restore to an older software. But I dont know, otherwise I wouldnt ask.
3. This one is specifically for Verizon. If anyone knows. I have actually planned on taking my phone in and getting a replacement as my usb port has been loose and the connection goes in and out, very stressful when youre almost done with a backup thats taken several hours. But if I were to do this, would the new phone I received arrive with 4.4.2? Or 4.4.4? Or is it up to chance? I know they probably send out refurbished models to make/save money so part of me thinks the phones wouldnt have been created with 4.4.4, and would still have 4.4.2 since the new parts are surrounding an old phone. Then again, Verizon sells some Notes with 4.4.4 now I think so I imagine they might just upgrade the refurbished as well while theyre at it. I dont know.
I have been very frustrated with all of this and help would really brighten up my week. I can live without a rooted phone but I do want it to be rooted and not being sure whether or not I can do it is really irritating. I also dont like waiting if I can help it.
Thank you all, I hope Ive provided enough information!
Welcome! There are a lot of great people on here that can help.
I dont think root is available yet for 4.4.4.
If you are on 4.4.4 and do a factory reset, you will still be on that version.
You might check another USB cable. I have what you describe happen from time to time and it's always been the cable that wears out. If not, you want to do an exchange before messing with root.
No root possible yet. Come back in a few months hopefully we will have it by then
Thank you! I really appreciate it, I honestly wasnt expecting any answers so quickly.
Ive tried a few different cords and its pretty much stayed the same. Its not a big deal because i usually just charge at night, I have a 10000 mAh battery haha. But if it gets worse i probably will take it in, for some reason it actually seems as if its gotten better. I might call and ask which software version is sent out with refurbished phones.
Honestly though i wish they would allow you to downgrade because since the update, ive had even worse service. Right now Im at a friends apartment and i normally dont even get 3g here but for the past two hours Ive had the big no service symbol up there. Luckily he has wifi. My service at home has always been shady as well and it has gotten worse but its not this bad thank god.
Ill just have to check back once in a while until i can root i suppose. But by then 5.0 might even be out, but im not exactly excited about that haha.
