acer iconia and 3.2 - Acer Iconia A500

Hi....so what is the stand of Acer related to us getting 3.2 ?
I hope the won't just update to 3.2 but also improve a lot a bugs related specifically to this tablet, for example rotation time....while using Virtuous Galaxy, one can tell this ain't hardware related but software related....
VG rom rotates sooooo much a faster than Acer roms that you can actually dare to rotate it..ans show friends how it handles it!
GPS also works poorly for me.
Well ....any comments or news?
Happy to know more of this 3.2 Honeycomb release!

As it's coming for the Transformer soon, I expect iconia tab to follow shortly...
The core 3.2 drop from Google isn't exactly that feature rich (just a few font/sizing smoothing and SD card improvements) - Offical 3.2 release notes - so I'm with you in hoping for some general performance improvements from ACER directly.
Overall I'm not really waiting for 3.2 (at least not as much as I was for the 3.0 > 3.1 update) - that might change if Acer actually notified the community more about *what* they are doing in their releases - most of the time the only way to find what's changed is by poking around the update file after it's dropped.

I know it's for sure too early talk about (and a bit off topic too), but while I think that 3.2 will come for both A500 and A501, I'm quite worried about the timing. I'm new to Acer devices (only have HTC Desire as a cell phone). To the ones who has other Acer devices: what's their "support lifetime"?
And, another fear is (again, too early to say) about 4.0: I hope we will be covered but... again, who knows about their support duration?

That's for sure. I'm not updating my tablet or phone until ice cream 4.0 is out. The EVO and acer will have to do until then.

I've already made up my mind not to upgrade to a quad when it comes out. Duo is enough for me for now. The acer and gtab should last me for a while.

3.2 is for 7" tablet.. so why look for it?
expand/minimise window is nice , but 3.2? i think 3.1.1 would have be ok.
acer will not deliver anything good with 3.2, just resized window, what a fracking breakthrough..

well there is one part of the update that looks helpful: and that is the extended micro SD support. Meaning my music apps might actually be able to properly utilize my card.

I wouldn't worry too much. 4.0 will apparently be open sourced, like with 2.x, so rom builders can put together proper roms for the device rather than just modified versions of existing roms. 4.0 will come the iconia one way or another.

Are you saying that 4.0 will require Tegra3 and/or quad core? Is this official or just your speculation?
Sent from my A501 using XDA App

I agree that 3.2 is a minor update. However, if Asus and Moto are pumping it out I doubt that Acer will not follow suit. They already dropped the price to match the Asus so I have to believe they are keeping a close eye on the competition.
4.0 IceCream Sandwich is obviously the big update for the end of the year and really I'm thinking the a500 would be getting it. Probably not right at launch but fairly soon after. I'm of the opinion that Android has done a pretty good job of pumping out updates frequently and that keeps the carriers/manufacturers pretty loose with the hardware upgrade cycles. Meaning, unless there is a hardware limitation, I would bet the a500 gets the update since it has not been out that long. In the long run, even if it doesn't officially come from Acer, I'm sure the devs cook up some 4.0 goodness for us.

On the contrary, 4.0 "supposedly" is to bring both phones and tablets onto the same OS!

This is my first Acer so I can't speak on lifetime, but the joy of Android, I'll guess long after Acer has moved on to the next tablet (A600 ?) - there will still be some resourceful people here releasing custom ROM updates including whatever neat updates including in the next tablet generation - but I'll put money down that their support model will be slightly longer than most carriers and their phones.

well I'm in no rush for it and wasn't in a rush for 3.1 only thing I would like is for better gps

base on Malaysia Acer,Hi fans - the Honeycomb 3.2 update for our Iconia Tab A500 will be released from 10th August onwards ~ stay tuned !

Don't quite follow the logic that because the 7 inch tab would be out, the 10 inch won't get it?? The 7 isn't considered an 'upgrade' just another option.

We'll get HC 3.2 the same way we got 3.1, 4-8 weeks behind Asia and Europe. I'm thinking we may very well get it here in the us by the time 4.0 comes out.....maybe?

Getting annoyed with Acer? (Samsung released kernel source)

Hell yes.
Here is hope that Acer realizes the sooner they provide the community with what it needs to use our devices to their full potential the sooner they will move more units!
As soon as I saw Samsung released the kernal source it really got me down that I bought the Acer 2 weeks ago. Really like this tablet but with the lack of Acer opening things up I think my tablet is craigslist bound.

this is so bad of acer
Too lazy to find the link but someone got a Tech Support response that the 3.0.1 kernel source would be out in the next week or 3. Hopefully 3.1 will follow more quickly.
Edit:
<attribute lazy=off>Here's the link, should be out today/tomorrow
If it doesn't come out today, I'll chase it up again in that same support task.

I was just thinking... could it be that Acer is nothing but a marketer? They bought the device from OEM manufacturer somewhere in China, label it with 'Acer' and 'Iconia A500' and sell it.
That's why they know nothing about 'unlock bootloader'. Release kernel? Dream on!
Well, hope I'm wrong
Almost electronics products are made in china on this days, and they are releasing 3.1,so i dont believe that
Even worse, Honeycomb 3.2 is coming out within a few weeks and will be pushing to the xoom and possibly HTC flyer devices.

That's what I've heard too. I think the Huawei is the only official announcement for 3.2 at this point, with the flyer being rumored to be waiting on 3.2 for the update. So we're still only 1 real update behind.

No.
One of the things 3.2 brings to the table is better support for 7" tablets (presumably 1024*600 resolution), but it also brings better hardware acceleration and bug fixes applicable to all Honeycomb tablets.

I would like to see a relevant and trustworthy source as well. Everything I've read says that 3.2 = 3.1 fixed for 7" screens and Adobe Flash 10.3 built in. I haven't seen where any additional features or fixes were announced.
Technically I don't see why they wouldn't fix whatever bugs are discovered in 3.1, BUT I'm guessing 3.1 is the final major release with 3.2 being a minor one and maybe 3.2.x being supplemental bug fixes until Ice Cream is announced and released.
Tomshardware has it. I cant post links yet due to post count.

Soon = next week?
Great news ! i hope they release the firmware for the drain issue.
Testing means finalized.
Finalized means leaks.
Leaks means bonertime.
Yeah, we can definitely speculate on this, but they've been rather good at keeping up. If you look honestly at the 3.1 rollout, we we're only a little behind vs. the Xoom release.
Not sure this will include any major hardware-level fixes as that's really not 3.2 related (firmware vs. OS).
good news. cant wait to see whats improved.
Question: (android and tablet noob here)
So google releases the updates to its developers/companies (like samsung, motorola, asus, etc) and then they(the manufacturers) decide as to when they release it to their consumers?
im assuming because they tweak it to fit their product and might add fixes to their own hardware
Right. Or they may decide not to do anything (check out end-of-life issues on the phone side)
Hopefully, Tegra2s are good for Ice Cream Sandwich, but ASUS is not obliged to provide it for the Transformer

I have to ask, why do you say they are not obliged? I though they had to send out updates on a timly manner for a certain amount of time? Didn't they just change some sort of contracts or something?
I believe that was only for cellphones but I could be wrong. I was just about to post this up but looks like you beat me to it, glad to see we'll be getting it soon. Can't wait to test out Prime 1.6 :-D
great news.. no surprise Xoom gets the update first since it's the so called google reference design but asus has been doing a great job..

While that may be the case for minor version updates, ICS will be a major version change (4.0?). No-one can expect every current device to be supported for every future Android version. Even Apple doesn't do that for the iDevices (original iPhone only goes as far as iOS 3.1.3).
At some point, like it or not, ASUS will stop bringing new versions for the Transformer. It makes no sense from a business point of view to do otherwise.
So, my point being is that, while ICS will be out before year end, ASUS may decide to focus development efforts of the Kal-El-based tablet they've already said will replace the Transformer. Don't get me wrong, I would love it if they did release ICS for us, but given the Transformer's hardware differences from stock (or the Xoom reference), especially around the keyboard, even having the full ICS source might mean a slightly reduced functionality Transformer at best.
Hopefully ASUS sees ICS as close enough time-wise to be a good reason to support it on the Transformer which, after all, will still be less than a year old.

I think your point about cellphones is probably right. You own them for at least the duration of the contract (almost always two years), but the device manufacturers were getting "bored" of them after six months and effectively dropping support by not providing OS updates. This had to change.
Our Transformers, on the other hand, are currently wifi only. They are more akin to a Netbook or Laptop in that respect. Microsoft is not obliged to update Windows 7 any more - they will with patches and possibly an SP2, but they are not legally bound to do either.
Equally, if ASUS did not update the Transformer again after 3.2, we would have no legal recourse. Of course, they'd have a fairly sizable number of people who are not happy, but then equally there's still lots of people running on XP so, arguably, the majority of non-tech consumers would probably not care either way as long as the device just worked.
but isnt Ice Cream the update to unite all and end fragmentation? If anything, wouldnt Ice Cream be the starting point for new android devices, and the end (support wise) for older units like xoom and asus?
So at the very least we shuold expect Ice Cream on TF (hopefully)

You are right. But I think Asus wants to make a good impression. This is their first tablet, so if they ever want to sell a new one, they better provide updates, as this will decide the 'name' the company gets. Everyone knows Samsung as a company that doesn't provide many updates. And many people were worrying about updates, and often decided to buy a HTC smartphone, because they always provided updates. (But Samsung is definitely working on it, look at the SGS II for example.)

Not sure I agree with you there. 3.0 out of the box was sluggish and dissappointing. 3.1 pepped up the tablet no end.
Yes, there are issues with 3.1 too, but looking at how it fared on the Xoom (the Google reference device, no less!) and I think we've been lucky overall.
I'm hoping 3.2 will be the "Gold" edition of Honeycomb, if you will. Frankly, this is their (Google's) only chance as they've already stated there won't be a 3.3.
A thought just occured to me: Are we living through the Android equivalent of Windows Vista? Is ICS our Windows 7? 2.X certainly seems to have followed XP's history with the finally solid SP2/3 equivalents being 2.2 and 2.3! Bizarre

No offence, but you seem to contradict yourself. On the one hand you're saying ICS will be the starting point for new devices and then end for the older units (including Xoom and TF) and then you say we should expect it.
I really hope we DO get it, but I'm not holding ASUS to it. As others have said, it would make PR sense for ASUS TO release ICS on the Transformer, but that's 3-4 months away at best and their plans may be elsewhere by that time.
Let's just hope for the best! (Or hope some devs deem the TF to be worthy to port ICS if it isn't supported by ASUS)

Yup. Just a little behind schedule - and without great communication.
This is typical Acer. Lucky part is - as Android users we can choose to not rely on the hardware devs and run custom roms.
ICS should definitly be able to be placed on the A500. All Android tablets now pretty much have the same hardware, the Tegra 2 chipset. If no ICS for the A500, I would assume no ICS for any Tegra 2 device. Which I believe 100% will not be the case.
And hopefully when ICS releases, they will release the source code so we can have AOSP ROMS. Then it wont matter whether Acer releases an official ROM because devs can build from AOSP and throw in the necessary code for the specific hardware of the A500.
Finally got the A500
I have been reading this user group comments for weeks now to gain as much info about the A500 as possible and after reading comments both good and bad, I decided to go out and buy.
I really love this device. It is better than I anticipated. It came with 3.01, however Acer upgraded the firmware over the weekend first to 3.1 and then to 3.2, so I am very impressed, (after having Samsung devices for 18 months and receiving no updates at all, still on 2.2).
I am very glad this U.G. exists as many of my questions have already come to the fore, thanks for that. The only problem is that my wife has threatened to throw the device out the window if I dont stop fiddling with the A500 and show her some attention as well.

My girlfriend makes the same threats Just Google 'Ice Cream Sandwich features' for some more info. They haven't released a whole lot of info yet, but in a nutshell it will be a a uniform operating system that will run on phones and tablets instead of 2 different OS. Some cool new features have been discussed, but I have a feeling there's a lot we won't find out about until it gets released (October/November last I heard).
It is officialy stated that tegra 2 devices wil be given ICS update.

I consider everything rumor and speculation until it actually happens, even when it comes from companies themselves. But to date, we've been told that ICS is a merging of the phone and tablet OS. That in and of itself should allow us the luxury of surmising that this OS should work on all if not most devices currently running Gingerbread and Honeycomb at the very least.
It will be of course up to manufacturers to take the time to port it to their past devices, something not very many companies are ever willing to do since it doesn't really add any physical value (for them) to the product but I would think the current tablet providers would essentially get the update to their products as quickly as they can considering 1. they don't have a multitude of variants on the market and 2. they still have lots on store shelves etc. so it would indeed add physical value to their product - unlike for example, expecting HTC to update their Mytouch 4G or Samsung to update their Galaxy I US carrier line which have been on the market for almost a year.
Don't believe any rumors you hear and remember to take everything right now as speculation and with a grain of salt. Acer could very well today say they will update and a month or 2 after it's out tell us it won't/can't be done. Such is the way of tech.
I think it will come to the A500. Maybe not as quickly as it does to the Tab 10.1 or Transformer, but not too long afterwards. Acer has proven themselves to at the very least be consistent with their updates if albeit slow (for some), and so I'll take my positives where I can. I'm fine with slow and steady.

No worries mate, just being a little light hearted. You're sharing from your heart, just like it should be. By the way, do you play mkv files? If so, what player do you use?

Android 4.0 ICS on Transformer (updatable)

As i have been reading on asus.com, our transformer can already update to 4.0 ics?!
You might want to check treir speccs of our transformer:
Android 3.2 Honeycomb O.S.(4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable) with Adobe® Flash® 10.2 support
So, who the hell can already update his device?? Well, i cant :-(
Link: http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/#download
Asus made a comment that by the end of the year the transformer would get an update to ics...I think that they are just telling you when available you will get ics
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
It says "upgradeable" on the item description, if you check the download section Honeycomb 3.2.1 as below is available.
V8.6.5.13 Only for US SKU (Android 3.2.1)
It's available for multiple SKU, not just US.
It's dated 19 October 2011 so it's quite recent. When they'll have ICS up only they know for sure.

Yes it has the capability to upgrade to ICS when it is available. That doesn't mean today.
Sales pitch, like the Xoom was upgradable from 3g to LTE.
Android 3.2 Honeycomb O.S.(4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable) with Adobe® Flash® 10.2 support*2
read carefully
Upgradable does not always means u can upgrade now, it means aslo it is able to be upgraded to 4.0
thats the point, case closed, (and if it says upgradeable its only for testers)
I'll be honest and say that the Asus Transformer was not something that appealed to me but with the announced specs of the Transformer 2, it has really got me excited. One thing that is really important is the update support from Asus. From what I can gather, it seems like Asus are pretty on the ball with releasing timely updates for the Transformer? Is this really true? The fact that it seems like ICS will be released on the original Transformer is a great confidence booster.
Comments/Suggestions all welcome.

ASUS has been the best, bar none, at updating their Android tablet. Samsung still hasn't updated the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to 3.2, for example, although they've announced that ICS will be coming to it someday. This is just one reason why I've become a huge ASUS fan since buying my Transformer.
News : ASUS Transformer Prime could go on sale with Honeycomb next week, Android 4.0 to follow

That's very encouraging. However, I'm not a massive early adopter so I'll probably wait for some decent reviews and for Asus to release ICS update before I take the plunge. I really want a tablet that can run Android buttery smooth and really think the TF2 is the one.
Please, less threads on the ICS update...

It already runs buttery smoothe. Much better than anything else I've used with android. If you want to save money I would get the first one. If money isn't an issue I would definitely wait and grab the Prime. The other tablets are jokes compared to these.

Well that is certainly reassuring. I was thinking of getting the TF101 (people told me to wait for the Prime, but I thought the hardware on the TF101 is fine). As long as the TF101 runs ICS without a hick I'll be happy. ICS is designed for dual core processors, right?

Price is not my primary concern but video play back is as that is what I will be mainly using it for. The tegra2 chips are all really poor for video decoding which is why I haven't invested in a tablet yet. The Asus prime and Toshiba excite are the only tablets that I know (coming out before xmas) that have a better chip than the tegra2 for video decoding. Both are really sexy and seem worth spending the extra on over current cheaper tablets. I guess I'll find out for sure when tjd tablets are properly released and reviews start trickling down.
As far as dual core goes I'm unsure what ics is doing. All I know is honeycomb runs great so if ics runs better I'll be stoked.

I agree! Too many ICS update and ICS Port(s) threads! I work in Western Australia's mining boom so I'm cash rich but time poor (for how long, is a crash coming?). I seem to spend hours reading these threads, enjoyable though they are,
What I need is either a way for the XDA system or a human being to alert me when a "mostly" working port (ICS Port release candidate?) or Upgrade (for field testing) is available. I have 5 Android devices atm so if a beta release has problems on one of them, I'll still be able to stay in contact with the developers any of the others.
Maybe a technical report whenever there's real progress for which I would pay, specially if it gets written up in somewhere like India where English skills are high, and the exchange rate is good (about 50 Rupees to the dollar atm!)
Find a few more customers like me, live in a place with low cost of living, and you've got yourself a viable business, it would seem.
Hint I have receive pm set up for xda.
I'm gonna wait to upgrade until I see how the new Samsung is with it's high res display tablet next year. Also what iPad 3 will be like.
OK, that's it. I am officially sick of hearing about Ice Cream Sandwich.
Or, more to the point, I am sick of not hearing about it, and seeing the same thing posted over and over again and old threads being bumped for no good reason.

[Q] Android 4.0 ROM for Acer a500

Heya
Have we gona get android 4.0 for acer a500 or not?
Thanks
It's suppose to be coming. First quarter or even this month.
You know any good Apps for Students.
I just installed Thor's ICS 4.0.3 Test#72 ROM (for Acer A500)...
Only few things NOT working (not worried about these few for now)
______________________________________________________________
Camera, Camcorder, HDMI sound, vpn, wifi ad-hoc, hardware rotation lock
Real smooth & Stable @1.60 Ghz (able to go 1.68 Ghz)
I'll know battery life, game tests soon.
Checking out ICS, getting exited (I've tried on 7 different HC 3.2+ ROM's last 2 weeks)
I love how plain it is, Very FEW Apps Running in background

Would that be through the official acer ota channels to?
Or should we count on devs like Thor if we want a taste of ics?
Where I can get this ROM?

That's from Acer, hopefully our good developers will have it rooted and available soon after the OTA drops.
I sent an email to acer support and this was their answer:
Thank you for contacting Acer America. My name is Abin and Badge Number GWSI661. I'll be happy to assist you.
As per your mail, I understand that you would like to install ice cream sandwich.
I have verified the serial number and found that it is covered under standard limited warranty.
Mohamed, your system does not have an option to update ice cream sandwich.. This option only available on Smartphone and Iconia A200.
For further clarifications, please feel free to visit our web site.
Have a great day!

Officially it is true, so you will need a custom ROM for ICS on the a500/a501 as it stands today. I think I tried telling everyone that already, but just got flamed on the threads for saying it. But, that's not the point now.
Currently, let we only state what has been made public so nobody does the flaming again:
ACER has officially said that the only tablet that will be getting ICS currently sold with HC is their new a200/a700 models. ACER also stated they are scaling back the Engineering staff that currently works on the a100/a500 by 60-70%.
So read into it what you want. If you think this means 'currently' as of today doesn't mean that in the future they won't therefore this by no means closes the door on getting ICS via OTA then you can. You are free to believe what you would like.

Actually you got flamed for stating that the hardware in the A500 wouldn't support ICS, which is one of the most ludicrous things I've heard to date in this forum.
there is a web site for tegra cpu only, great!
Type acer a500 icecream sandwich into youtube search / videos within a week (jan 5th) & u will see the a500 rocking ICS!

Not worried
If not A500 then another of its peers will get ICS - Transformer anyone? Porting will be a breeze as the hardware on all current tablets are essentially the same
It just the waiting sucks :-D
Compared to HTC who has decided that gingerbread couldn't been properly installed on his HTC Desire neither, I undesrtand the decision of Acer.
This is business. Acer creates new models because the firm is in competition with the other manufacturers and, in order to sell their tablets, they must propose some new things on their new models.
Why to buy the A200, knowing that its hardware is very close to the A500's one? ... Because it runs under ICS when the A500 doesn't.
Since months, we can find dozens of custom roms on XDA running Gingerbread fine on the Desire. Even ICS has been ported successfully on the Desire.
So, I guess that everybody who wants ICS on his a500 will get it too in the near future.
sir you are 1 big troll
timmyDean You will always be a noob....
The rumors and news items that were spread seemed to be a scam... Acer clearly stated in front of the world (cnn I bellieve) that they are NOT cutting down on their tablets. Acer made it really clear that they will do a lot to bring acers tablets to the top of the market.
Stepping out of the tablet market would also be a much bigger mistake since the new version of windows (code-named windows 8) will be targeting tablet devices.
To clarify your topics regarding ICS needing higher end devices is a ****load of crap. The first target in the ICS development was to make a Honeycomb update that would be completely compiled, faster and more lightweight.
it actualy needs much lower specs to run than Honeycomb....
next on our list is the official mail you will get from Acer as fast as you ask them "are you planning on releasing android 4.0 on our devices?". In an e-mail to me they actually said that they were currently in contact with Google to test the new android 4.0 system on Acer Iconia a500 tablets.
If you are planning on spreading more rumors regarding devices or whatever. add the sources where you actually got this information to it.
Otherwise get out from xda or any other forum for that matter and trow your tablet away if you are so unhappy with it.
My Iconia Tab is fantastic, and knowing that the new release won't add much new to android 2.3.1 I can life another few days without the pressing need to root the device and pirate android 4.0 to it.
please know that ICS is just a compiled (little bit faster) version of android with a few new functions (including an easy to hack face recognition system).
So Timmy: Stop Trolling or bring that behaviour to the forums and message boards that actually allow that.

For you to claim I do not know what I'm taking about is just wrong and I never said anything about ACER getting out of the tablet business. If you'd read, you see that I stated we cut support by half on all twlighted hardware which the a500 is part of. So, instead of listening to actual truth, based on actual information from ACER you can believe what you would like. Jan will soon be over and that will be proof enough for you that there is NO ICS under your OTA Christmas tree.

Since when does "currently" not mean current? Of course I would believe ICS is not currently available on the A500, ifthat is what they said. It is believable because we don't have it now. To extrapolate that to mean it will never be available from Acer, is quite a leap. Samsung Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus are the only Samsung phones currently available with ICS, does that mean that there are no former or future Samsung phones that will have ICS? Use your head...
