[Q] Atrix or Nexus S or wait for galaxy s2? - Atrix 4G General

Yeah yeah, I've seen the similar threads but they're not up to date especially with gingerbread released. I'm due for an upgrade on the 26th and want to get a new phone before college in mid August. I've posted a similar forum excluding the nexus on the gs2 forum, but I want to hear the other side. I prefer the 4" screen, but also want to root and not have motoblur, and I hear the phone lags when you do that. I realize the nexus s is single core but are dual cores that much faster with current software? I like longer battery life and an led notfier since I'm coming from a blackberry Curve. Can anyone say how the screens compare, I've heard the pentile display is terrible, but have yet to see for myself. Finally I'm told that the atrix does not have neon support, is that a difference for the average user? Thanks in advance.

I've had a nexus s and it does not lag at all, neither does my atrix. Single core or dual core it doesn't seem to make a difference to me. In my experience the atrix has better battery life. As far as the screens go that's a matter of opinion, the samoled seems more vibrant but is utterly useless in sunlight. As much as I hate BLUR, I chose the atrix over the nexus s and once we have an AOSP Rom I will have no regrets whatsoever.

I had the nexus s, it wasn't much of an improvement over my custom rommed Captivate, so I took it back. I was also looking forward to the Galaxy S2's release in America, until I got Gingerbread on my Atrix. There is no way the GS2 will be a substantial improvement over my Atrix now.
The Motorola Atrix was voted as the best phone at CES, and with Gingerbread it lives up to those accolades. Froyo and the ridiculous price of the lapdock killed this phone's initial release.
Take a look at the top results on Smartbench 2011, there is a reason Samsung delayed the GS2's release and overclocked it to 1.2ghz. Once the Atrix gets overclocked to 1.5ghz, those top results will change.

So will the battery life lol

Also, does the lack of NEON support make a difference for the average user?
EDIT: reread my post, thought I didn't include the question, reread it again, realized I did.

I was worried about lack of neon. But honestly it doesn't even matter at this point in time, apps don't even come close to making neon cpu make any difference whatsoever.
By the way, just got an atrix today! Found craigslist superb deal.

If you want to play normal or hi profile x264 it does.
Really annoying to have to re-encode to baseline x264. For xxxx's sake this phone can push 3D pixels like Samurai Vengeance II but can't handle HD video encoding, WTF.

I had nexus so and atrix together for two weeks. There is major performance difference between the two. Nexus s's 512 mb ram was the deal breaker for me, it was not enough. I think I'm spoiled by the 1gb ram.

well thats welcome news. I'll do some research. A really time consuming thing to investigate (encode, copy to phone, see if it plays, rinse and repeat)

I own both and I prefer the Atrix.
With an AOSP ROM this phone will scream.

I would stay away from the Nexus S. Ya, it's Raw Goog but the sub-par RAM, single core chip and cheap plastic construction just aren't worth it especially on a new contract.
I'm loving my Atrix on GB, rooted, de-blurred (Titanium freeze) and running Go Launcher EX. I experience no lag, web browser is lighting fast, GPS is the best I've experienced from a phone. That's my experience and opinion. Considering the timing of your upgrade I would suggest checking the SG2 out as it may be more to your liking. Some people like Sammy HW some don't (I personally hate it, especially their damn "Chin" design philosophy).
That said, you cannot go wrong with the Atrix, it's an excellent phone. I traded in my Inspire 4G at a loss and don't regret my decision one bit.
Oh, and DL/UL speed in Houston, TX I've been averaging 3.5mb down (6 max) and 1.3mb up (2.1 max). Inspire 4G never made it over 2.5 down (1 Ghz. w/ 768mb RAM). Atrix is on par with my friend's EVO 4G (Sprint WiMax, he avgs 2-3 but has a max he's gotten of 7 once) and another friend's T-Bolt (Verizon LTE, 5-6 avg and a max of 8). And yes processor and RAM do affect your up/down as it's partially determined by the amount of data your phone can process, another reason to stay away from the S at this point.

Might have been my thread. I apologize, but I was wrong. Even tough performance has increased substantially (from 8-10 fps to an average of 24) when playing high profile h.264, it still isnt perfectly smooth and, for some reason, the episodes of Game of Thrones were mute for me, which indicates a continuing lack of support to audio codecs. After converting it with the Handbrake method, it worked flawlessly.
@OP
The Atrix and the SGS2 have different offerings. SGS2 has a standardly overclocked processor, a bigger, brighter screen, less weight, and a GPU accelerated browser. The Atrix has a much higher pixel density, better battery life, and a specialized game store (Nvidia Tegra Zone which, despite the lack of titles in numbers, the ones it DOES have possess highly improved graphics over standard versions).
And for many of us, it has a lapdock, which is a perfect netbook replacement if all you do is work with word, excel, and light web browsing, being lighter and having better battery life than many netbooks. Its also fun like hell to play at customizing it

I like the overall build with the Motorola Atrix, but without the GPU accelerated and NEON support, would I be at a significant hardware disadvantage for everyday use? I feel I wouldn't. Also, any complaints about the screen?

Okay. Opera provides a gpu accelerated browser that is blazing fast. The screen is really nice, but you may notice grainy greens.
Edit: oh, neon support isn't an issue, at least for me. Most of my videos can be played using moboplayer.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App

The atrix also is not sized like a giant brick but weighing like a feather toy (the #1 reason I didn't go for the SGS2). Form factor wins for me. Not to mention in Australia, atrix is 150-200 dollars cheaper.
I would say though with froyo it is noticeably inferior. But that's no longer an issue, whether stock or unlock BL/custom ROM.

If you want a big screen and fast phone....sgs2, if you want sething new and try some mods atrix, if yu are a hard modder HD2

Now that there's actual photos of the AT&T galaxy family, would anyone consider it a superior choice? I kinda like the idea of a physical keyboard but I'm used to portrait like on my blackberry.

So which phone are you going back to?

Have had it in use for more than a day. Battery life sucks, data speeds suck, screen is less than unimpressive...and when compared to my no-longer outgoing ATT Nexus One, its subpar in nearly every way that I seem to use a smartphone.
Its going back tomorrow. Who else is as turned-off this quickly by the Atrix?

This is a total troll post right? I've had the nexus one since day one, and by no means it anywhere close to this phone, and my nexus one is on gingerbread.
Troll post?
The Atrix may have larger performance numbers on paper but I'm saying that for how I use a phone the Atrix isnt great...its not even good.
My n1 screams in comparison; its hands down a better device.

I appear to be having the exact opposite experience as I'm absolutely loving mine.
Oh, and I'm coming from an iP4 and an Inspire as my last 2 phones. Inspire batter was just horrid for me, but the Atrix has taken a full day's punishment of being used heavier than normal and I still have about 40% remaining. That includes tons of gaming (crazy snowboard and Angry Birds mostly) and some music, YouTube and browsing.

How exactly does it blow it out of the park when stock Nexus S gives 1200 to 1300 in Quadrants and the Atrix gives 2800 COMPLETELY STOCK? Super Saturated Amoled Screen? No thank you.
What makes it so great for you guys?
I prioritize battery life, data speed, customization, size in hand. With those considerations the Atrix disappoints.
It may be great for some, but im still tallying the list of what I can no longer do in giving up the nexus for the atrix. So I'm headed back
I'm not looking to piss off folk, but just see if others see it the same way. New is not always better, QED.

Coming from a Captivate running 2.2.1 (Serendipity 5.11), the Atrix is a lot faster. Absolutely no lag from my experience. Just missing the fast upload speeds...
Umm what nexus s gives that stock stock I pull 1969 non 2978 on voodoo kernal and 2.3 works with the ui to speed things up a feature only in 2.3 not froyo and 2.4 will be even better witch you will need a atrix 2 to see 2.4 I bet.

Funny how your FULLY customize Nexus S needs all that to stand BESIDES the Atrix. And get your facts straights. 2.4 is Gingerbread. Which all new phones will see soon enough. Atrix I'm guessing even sooner.
I think it's just personal preference is all. I prefer the speed, display, screen size of the Atrix. It also absolutely smokes flash video. Speakers aren't tinny and have tons of clean volume which is a welcome change. Storage is also very nice, especially not having a small app storage. The fingerprint scanner is working perfectly for me and I find it easier to unlock my phone while taking it out of my pocket. Voice quality is a ton better for me as well. Gaming is way smoother than the N1 and multitouch is better.
Those are a few of the things that make is pretty great to me.

I dont own an Atrix (yet) but had a chance to experiment with the device.
Customization and size can be considered very similar to the nexus 1. Data speeds is got to do with the AT&T network, not the phone. And my guess is that the battery life also better.
The only disappointment is the screen as compared to the captivate (i own..). The amoled screen though saturated colors is still better than the Atrix. The angry birds on the Atrix had the colors very dull. (i mean very disappointing.) Also the brightness with the max setting is equi9valent to say 25% brightness on the Amoled. But maybe thats bcoz i have got used to the captivate screen.
Otherwise the phone is super fast and responds very well. Quality is far better than the captivate.
Ah for nexus s its 2.3 gingerbread and the atrix wont taste icecream like the nexus s will good luck with even tasting 2.4 and roms fat chance #smh but enjoy moto helo moto

still testing it out and i think its too soon to say i'll switch... but if xperia arc is available within 30 days i might be tempted... and my backup would be HTC Inspire 4g
so far my issues are battery life, moto blur, locked bootloader, data speed, some unsupported apps (due to resolution) and random lag
what i like is the weight, screen resolution, hdmi out, duo core speed, speed and of course more speed... I also like the "idea" of the accessories like the laptop dock, but will probably never purchase one
I'm sure the battery life will get better after a few charges, it is the first day after all and possibly with a firmware or two the data rates will improve as well.
If I do return it will be on the 30th day so I can get the full feel of the atrix express before I make a final decision
Just my two cents

My battery life is MUCH better on the Atrix than the Inspire was for me. Ringer/notification volume is loud and clear vs the Inspire as well. I can set the phone down in the car and hear nav instructions easily even with music playing in the car. Flash video plays pretty well on the Inspire, but it gets smoked by the Atrix. I also love the docks such as the car dock. It's amazing how much easier it is to use in the car with a custom dock.
Battery life is better on the Atrix. I'm coming from a Nexus One.
The touch sensor on the N1 is also garbage. Typing on the Atrix is much improved.
720p video quality is much improved, although grainier than my Captivate.
Atrix loads faster than Nexus One.
I would rate the Atrix a "fair" upgrade. Just fixed some things about the N1 that I grew tired of.
P.S. Crippled upload is a bummer considering the front facing camera.

Battery is far from better, this guy is on crack.
1650 mah on GS2 to 1930 mah on atrix.
I like the higher resolution screen on the atrix. The atrix also has 1080p play, not recording yet(unless you want to mod).
The atrix is only on 2.2.2 right now, but we'll be receiving a 2.3.3 update in the next month or two. (Correction 2.3.4)
I couldn't be more happy with my atrix, I like the fact that I can do whatever I want for the entire day and never run out of battery. I also like the fact that the resolution of the phone is so high (960x580 or something like that?). I couldn't stand looking at pixels all day with a 800x480 screen.
The simple fact that I know I can watch videos and play games on my phone for the entire day without worrying about the battery is reason enough for me to keep it. Also the fact that we're getting the 2.3.4 update soon is good enough for me to not jump ship.
Both phones are great but the battery life the atrix offers, the resolution of the screen, and the tegra2 processor are all keepers for me.
Enjoy your phone! Either choice is good.
Thanks for the reply Magnetox...
I was hoping for a response along those lines, I myself was very hesitant to do the swap as I genuinely like the Atrix and have had many android phones to know and appreciate how good the battery is on the Atrix.
The reason I made the post was because alot of people told me to do the swap but deep down I was very hesitant as having had the nexus s and galaxy s I know about the battery life, as far as the Super Amoled display is concerned I think it's the biggest over hyped screen in the world.... Yes the blacks are great but the other colours are so far from natural it makes everything look cartoony.
Once again big thanks to Magnetox.... I think I'll stick with the Atrix and wait for 2.3.4 as for everyone recommending the SGS2 I'll let you be the sheep that follow and make a big mistake.
Is something wrong with his Galaxy S II? I don't see why he would want to do this swap.
The Atrix is good, but the S II is perhaps the best phone on the market.
No it's brand new in the box.
But he likes the docks and webtop that the Atrix has.
What makes the SGS2 the best phone on the market?
Here is a pretty good break down between the 2:

Also, no info. on when the new Google Nexus 4G will be released, but it's specs look really bad ass! If it goes to AT&T, I may consider jumping ship and get it... probably won't be out for some time though.

This is not an over-exaggeration. The vibrancy of the colors on the display is amazing. I have a Captivate and will probably get an Atrix in the next two weeks (I just upgraded 11 days ago), but I know I will miss the hell out of this screen. The minute AT&T's GSII is released, the Atrix will most likely be sold.

Both are great phones, I just prefer the atrix.
Higher res + better battery + tegra 2 games = better phone
(at least in my opinion)
Cheers! You'll enjoy either of them.
EDIT: Once the bootloader gets unlocked by motorola (they said they would), or once it gets cracked or bypassed, this phone will be even better than it is now! It is much more futureproof IMO than the GS2
Atrix Specs: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Motorola-ATRIX-4G_id4982

SGS2 Vs Optimus 2X (Tegra 2 with same resolution as SGS2) benchmarks:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Sams...s---guess-who-scored-3732-on-Quadrant_id18505
SGS2 wins Quadrant, smartbench 2011, nenamark1.
They tie on the browser mark, each winning 1 of the 2 runs.
SGS2 full review: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-Review_id2728
Atrix full review: http://www.phonearena.com/reviews/Motorola-ATRIX-4G-Review_id2665
Again, the battery life is virtually identical. The atrix has a bigger default battery, but the SGS2 is more efficient. SGS2 clocks down to 200mhz when turned off whereas the Atrix only clocks down to 400mhz in my experience.
Gingerbread has no dual-core enhancements, so the Atrix will only see a small bump in benchmark scores from updating, but nothing to bring it over the SGS2.

Doesnt the optimus 2x only have 512 mb of ram? And isn't it running froyo 2.2? Not a fair comparison.
Gingerbread may not have dual core enhancements... but it most definitely makes the phone faster. Updated drivers, new kernels, improved efficiency.
Benchmarks have been done on the gingerbread atrix and it showed around 10-20% improvement in FPS. Im assuming there's not so much motoblur to slow it down.
The drivers are obviously much more optimized for the atrix in gingerbread. Here's the link.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhdEeu3WUXA
51 FPS on nenamark. Stock clock. Currently the atrix does 43 fps. Correct me if I'm wrong but thats 20% increase in FPS. That means this phone is going to be flaming fast in gingerbread once the bugs are worked out.
Also, the battery life IS NOT IDENTICAL.
The atrix clocks down to 216 mhz. Stop spreading false information. The atrix has better battery life. Period.
The fact that the SGS2 only has 4 gpu cores, and the atrix has 8, is a huge difference.
Once overclocking kernels are available the atrix can stably sit at 1.2 ghz IM SURE, and it has the battery life to do so. And it will have 8 cores @ that 1.2 ghz.
The atrix is more futureproof IMO.
That's why I'm sticking with it.

Galaxy S II on ATT Oct 2nd $199

Sorry if its a repost. So whos going to upgrade!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/21/...akes-its-atandt-debut-october-2nd-for-199-on/
Im not biased to any phone. I like anything new and high powered. Cant get me wrong I love my Atrix but the Galaxy S II is tempting.
i'm pretty happy with my Atrix, i think i'm gonna hold off on upgrading until a decent quad core phone comes out on the market.
Not enough of an upgrade to think about it.
The Devs have really just started to take this phone to its capabilities so worth hanging in for a while longer.

When the SGSII came out back in... May(ish), it seems liked I should have not gotten an Atrix and waited for the SGSII to come to AT&T. the SGSII had a bigger screen, faster CPU, no Blur, no locked bootloader, and already had a pre-beta of Cyanogen out within two weeks of the phone hitting the international market.
Fast Foward to today. The Atrix has an unlocked bootloader, a *solid* beta of CM7, MIUI in the works, a bigger battery, and the performance is close to that of the SGS (in CM7 while OC'd) - in some tests it is noticeabley faster.
The SGSII also seems to have some hardware issues that have been reported. Yellowing of the screen on the left side is the most reported issue.
Now look to the future because the SGSII isn't going to come out for another two weeks. Should we have all waited to get an SGSII? No way, not IMHO. I was sitting on an iPhone 3GS for months and months after I was eligible for an upgrade, I was just waiting until something big came out or the phone died. I'll be honest, at first I did regret my Atrix purchase at times. Software versus 4.1.26 had a TON of bugs in it, 4.1.57 did too. 4.1.83 was solid, and when we got GB the phone was pretty solid. Now with CM7 I have no complaints over the phone at all, and I'm glad I didn't suffer with my iPhone 3GS for the last 7 months (I bougt the Atrix on release day) waiting for the SGSII after returning the Atrix to wait for the SGSII.
If I had waited this long for the SGSII with my iPhone 3GS, I would likely pass up the SGSII and wait for more info on the Nexus Prime.

One thing I don't miss going from my captivate to atrix is in the power usage menu "display" being like 95%. I don't know why they say SAMOLED use less power. I know the screen on the sgs and sgs2 is different but they're close enough IMO. Also after all the BS with GPS and poor update from Samsung I don't know if I could buy another. As far as specs....IMO I don't think it's worth the upgrade the specs are really similar. The only reason I might be tempted is for the dev support.
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
as someone who has had both i can assure you the atrix is a much more all-around solid piece of hardware.
like reported above the screen on the SGSii may be bigger but it has its issues (yellow left on most handsets and battery consumption).
the battery is simply way worse then atrix.
and what got to me the most about going back to the atrix was the sound quality, it was simply horrendous, especially for a high-end phone like that.
the sound chip on it is sub-par compared to the original SGS even, with high end headphones i was getting distortions, low volume, and very un-even sound, to anyone who wants to listen to music on his phone this one simply kills the deal.
atrix has a very very good audio experience compared.
same goes for call quality.
and the phone doesnt even have a led for notifications.
also doesnt have an hdmi-out without you buying some special cable adapter.
what does seem to be on its side is a huge dev base working on it and realeasing things daily but the atrix is starting to catch up... just give it some time.
either way upgrading from a atrix to a galaxy 2 is pretty stupid, except for a bit larger screen you really dont get anything in return for all that cash.
i'd wait atleast another year before ditching the atrix. theres simply nothing today that it cant handle so why buy another "future proof" phone when your current one is still "future proof"
Definitely sticking with my atrix <3

... the screen on the SGSII is so lustworthy... it oozes awesomeness. Other then that --- Atrix is better IMO.
i want both.
iphone5 too if its nice.
i just upgraded this july so no sgsII for me. the galaxy was going to be my upgrade, but it just took too long to come out. also, it's not gonna be the latest and greatest anymore like it would've been when it came out internationally, the sgsIII will probably be out internationally in 6 months since most phone lines get upgraded yearly.
my friend mentioned the PS Vita yesterday and i'm doing research on that to see if it has enough functions to become a phone for me.

I'd rather have an atrix with an average screen than have a SAMOLED that destroys my battery. I have an upgrade available and being 100% honest I'm waiting for a new BB QNX mobile phone to drop next year. The new 9810 with os7 was actually a pretty big step forward in speed and functionality and supposedly QNX will be able to run Android apps as well. Not saying it's gonna be the king of phones but it looks pretty cool.

My wife is getting it in October, about 2 weeks after it comes out. She is already in love with it and the fact that we are getting the NFC enabled version made her happier. She's almost as big a nerd as I am. (I'm not allowed to touch it, she wants to do everything on her own)

isn't the sgs2 screen still 800 x 480?
I have the infuse plus an atrix, while the screen on the infuse is so sexy,, the atrix for me has the total package,, the sgs2 for me is not that much of a upgrade from my atrix, even the infuse for that matter, sure it has godly specs, but in real world usage, even my old ass dinc still get the job done,,
I dont like where the smartphone market is heading.. things need to slow back down. alittle,, before you know it, the atrix 3 will be out 3 months after the atrix 2 at the end of the year, lol

yeah i forgot about that lower rez -- UGH -- why put it out at a lower rez then qHD? COME ON SAMMY.
The newer Super AMOLED Plus displays have more sub-pixels and they do not use pentile anymore which also helps eliminate the "grainy" look. I would still like to see qHD but I don't think there is going to be much to complain about on these screens.

Would jumping to the Sensation be a bad move?

So I do like my Atrix but I have the chance to do a straight trade for a Sensation.
I love Sense and would like a better camera.
Atrix does have 16gb vs the Sensation and its 8gb card, but I hardly have any space used up on mine. Its just photos and apps that are taking space pretty much - maybe 4 songs.
I dont use webtop. I like knowing the Atrix has the HDMI out and for the sensation - it has the option to do it but you need to buy the adapter cable. As much as I like the thought of that feature, I havent even used it yet lol.
I knwo the battery life on the Atrix is obviously better. I would buy a spare battery for the Sensation though and just keep it in my wallet just in case, like I used to do with my Motorola Milestone. The battery isnt very big.
Both have the same resolution and qhd.
The ROM support on the Atrix is lacking, and it looks very populated on the Sensation.
My girlfriend has the Desire which I have ROM'ed for her and its ROM support is very active and up to date for a phone of that age - I can expect the same for the Sensation?
Anything about the Atrix that is worth keeping over the Sensation?
Anything about the Sensation that should warrant the trade to it?
Thanks guys
Tried my friend's Sensation out for a day and he tried my Atrix out for the same day.
The Sensation was slightly laggy, even for such a powerful processor (or was i just used to the smoothness of the Atrix?) camera was awesome and overall the phone is pretty damn good! However, he got it back with a full battery (had to charge it overnight or else it would die on me) whereas when he gave my Atrix back, it was still running on the charge from a day ago, after his heavy use too (albeit, it was nearly dead). If i was you, i'd stay with the Atrix, but at the end of the day, it's up to you.
Only if you don't mind losing battery life...

Was your friend's Sensation running a custom ROM?
I would run ARHD on it and have Setcpu underclocking when needed as well. That ROM is said to have better battery life.
But as far as battery goes , Like I said I would just buy a spare and keep it with me. I did that with my Milestone and it wasnt much of a hassle.
And as far as the lag goes, there are TONS of animations in Sense, which I love the look of. If I wanted a period of time with no sense and more smooth performance, I would just throw on Go Launcher as my launcher, like I am with the Atrix
Apart from the battery life though, any other reason of sticking to the Atrix?

AFAIK it was all stock, not even rooted. We just like to swap our devices every once in a while (done the same with game consoles). I'm not saying it's a bad device though
If your on AT&T your not going to get anything above 3g on the phone most likely will be stuck in Edge. The drop in the phone storage and the battery also not using Tegra 2 CPU which according to some websites and reviews I have seen say that the Qualcomm is about 10-15% slower than the tegra 2.

double posted, same reply as above, sorry!
I am in Canada, so not on AT&T
How would he be the clear winner?
As far as processor speed..
I'm sure those websites reviewed it as stock though, and not using an optimized ROM.
The Atrix is much faster using a ROM vs stock as well.
We all have difference opinions. Some may love it but some may not. Try testing out at places or with a friend and get the feel for it. Dev here are not very active just yet but in mean time they will.

I used to have an atrix and personally.. trading it for a sensation was the best move ever. However, I had to add on a bit of cash
I hate how the atrix recognizes the internal as an "sd card" and my other reasons was because Sense>Motoblur (in my opinion!) and I liked the looks of the sensation more + on top of that, (correct me if I'm wrong) the development in atrix forums seemed to slow down.. and on the other hand, sensations dev is still going strong! I also think that the back cover is 100x better - but, there's also flaws with the sensation cover. Can't say it's perfect
Also everyone complaining about battery life.. my sensation was unplugged 10pm last night, went to bed, woke up with 90% remaining, went to work! Got home it's now 3pm and I'm at 55% (I had a ~30 minute call and lots of texts as well as gmail syncing 2 accounts/facebook/twitter) HOWEVER I'm using a different battery. Look up "Anker". This thing is a beast! Surprisingly, it's lasting very well. I wouldn't say the battery is an issue. With this 55% it will definitely last me until tonight!
Just my two cents! I'm also in canada as well and signal/speed isn't an issue either.
You seem to be defending the sensation a lot as if you want it, its your choice, so just go with whatever you want, everyone has their own opinions.

Well, if he defends it and everyone elses opinions/arguments are better than his, then the atrix will be the clear winner! and agreed with the opinions part!
I am not "defending" the sensation, since I dont even have it; its just that people are saying the Atrix is better but their arguments dont really justify it to the extent of them defending the Atrix lol
Of course we all have different opinions. I think one of the first things I said in the initial post was that I love my Atrix

i would stick on the Atrix bandwagon for a little while longer, we're about to get nightlies on CM7 which means all our devs will be able to work on their own individual projects again. the only reason our development slowed down was because ibproud organized most of the Atrix devs into a group to port CM7 for us; now that it's almost done, people will start building their own ROMs and hacks.
it may take a month or two more, but it'll most definitely be worth the wait
Very interesting question.
Here's how I weigh everything up.
Atrix:
- Faster processor (despite being 1Ghz vs 1.2Ghz)
- Better GPU (more effecient, less heat and THD games)
- Much brighter display
- More RAM
- Much better battery
- Better Touchscreen (Sensation has issues)
- No death grip issues
- Webtop and fingerprint scanner
Sensation:
- Better build quality
- Sharper display (RGB stripe vs PenTile)
- Brand recognition
- Better community
- Much better camera
So it's really up to you with what you prioritize.
OMG totally trade for the sensation I heard the next ROM will support quad core.

I wouldn't say that the Geforce ULP is betfer than the Adreno 220 GPU. Just look at the benchmark results on this page: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4686/samsung-galaxy-s-2-international-review-the-best-redefined/17 (don't forget the qHD resolution on all Adreno 220 phones either). Also the processor of the Atrix is not faster; it handles flash better because of software reasons, but that 0,2GHz difference is visible in Linpack, so I guess custom ROMs would unleash that power with software optimizations. Also something you left out is the lack of NEON support in the Atrix (no .mkv playback or high profile h.264).
I don't want to say that the Atrix is not a great phone - I had it for a while, but then sold it for an SGSII (great decision) - but the Sensation is just better imo.

8mp vs 5 MP camera
1ghz vs 1.2 ghz processeor
Kickstand vs no kickstand (I know not really a big deal)
4.3 in screen vs 4 in screen

Massive dev support vs ??
Domestic radio vs world phone**

Seems like a decent offering with a solid price point for those not wanting some cutting edge specs. But I don't know if I'd go from a 4G to this, especially locking in for 2 years.
In hindsight I prediro a specification point.

i got my evo 4g on release day, had it for about 9 months and then bought a shift. i then switched to us cellular 3 weeks ago, had a motorola electrify (photon) and swapped it for the hero-s which is the same as the evo design minus the wimax radio and world capabilities. figured i'd post my thoughts on it here since there's no forum for the hero-s.
the camera is absolutely fantastic. i'm assuming the design will have the same one. it's got a f2.2 lens, so it's amazing in low light. i use my camera a LOT and that was a big downside to the electrify for me.
the cpu is a 2nd generation snapdragon, so it's more than just a 200mhz speed bump. it's quite a bit faster. it also has an adreno 205 vs. the 200 as the gpu, which is a significant upgrade. i honestly don't notice much of a difference between my hero-s and the electrify i had. i don't play many cpu/ gpu intensive games, but it's run everything i've thrown at it with ease. it's not a top of the line multi-core speed demon, but i really don't need that. it's fast, everything runs smooth, and that's all i need/ want.
no kickstand, but not really needed. the 4" qhd screen is probably 90% of the reason i went with this phone. the screen looks great, i really like the higher resolution, and it's just so much easier for me to hold. i actually have pretty big hands, but the evo 4g and electrify are just awkward for me to hold. i sold my evo 4g and got a shift because of this, and traded my electrify for the hero-s for the same reason. this should be a great choice for people who don't want a bigger screen.
battery life seems decent. i can make it through the day with moderate use. if i'm driving i'll plug it in if i'm using nav/ maps, but overall it's ok. probably a bit better than my shift and it seems better than my evo 4g from what i can remember of it.
as for massive dev support... oh god i hope there's some action with this phone on sprint, there's not much going on with it on the USC side (at least not yet). i'd think it'll get rooted/ s-off somewhat quickly, but who knows. this thing would scream with cm7 on it, and i'm thinking it'll run ICS just fine.
there's no world phone capabilities on my hero-s, so i can't comment on that. it seems like that would be a very nice feature for people who need it though.
overall, i love this thing. it's very thin, i love the aluminium unibody, the button placement is great, it's very zippy, the screen resolution and size are perfect for me, and the camera is fantastic. i never thought i'd say this, but i actually kind of *like* sense 3.0 too. i think it's a great phone if you don't need the latest and greatest, and if you want a screen that's between 3.5" and 4.3", this might be what you're looking for. hope this helps, and if anyone has any questions about the phone i'll answer if i can!

viva la MIUI
It has the smaller 45nm scorpion core which generates less heat and uses less power, so that's a plus, and I believe clock for clock the Scorpion core is faster than the original Snapdragon 65nm core. Then there's the Adreno 205 as far as visually demanding apps goes.

i made a mistake in my previous post, the hero-s *does* have GSM/ global roaming capabilities, so it really is very close to the evo design 4g then. it just doesn't have the wimax radio... so i'm hoping hoping hoping that any roms and root methods for the design will also work on the hero-s (like the photon stuff works on the electrify on USCC).
HTC Evo Design longer than Hero S??
Just read dimensions on Evo design 4g - and it seems it is longer (4.8 vs 4.5 inches) than the Hero S? Anyone have idea why as it looks like the same phone?
Is this phone worth a 2-year contract or would I be better off adding $50 or so dollars and buying a used Evo while I wait for the Prime?
