I'm sorry XDA, but I need help with dual booting my Nook Color :( - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've spent a couple days trying, I've searched the forums and Google'd any issue I ran into, but I think I am just doing something wrong here. As a last resort, I'm making this thread to ask for your help.
I am having the hardest time getting my Nook Color (blue dot) to dual boot correctly. I can get it to boot into C7 just fine, but when I try booting to the stock Nook Color (alternate boot?) it just hangs at the screen with the logo and "alternate mode" in text.
I'm following this guide:
The Very Corrected CM7 & Stock 1.2 Dual Boot Guide
I have a CWM SD card with the corrected 1gig image with CWM 3.2.0.1.
I have the two new partition files to correct the blue dot changes on my Nook.
I have Cyanogen Nightly 138.
I have downloaded all the files that the guide mentioned.
I can root it successfully and get rooted Nook Color, and I can install C7 over it and have it run fine. Dual booting is a different story and is giving me a headache
In the guide, I have tried using the included u-boot file, which unfortunately didn't work. I have also tried with and without correcting the blue dot partition change.
I then reinstalled C7 to use the default boot method (the one with the menu) and I was able to get into C7. But holding the volume buttons to boot to stock causes the Nook to hang.
Am I doing something wrong? Any help will be really appreciated.

[Q] Stuck after using ROM Mgr to CM7, Dummy Guide not working

Hey there. I could really use some help. I rooted my nook color 1.1 a while back with no issues and finally decided to take another step. I added Rom Manager from the market. Did a backup and then after adding cm 7.02 encore to my class 10 16gb card, I followed the Rom Mgr directions to attempt an upgrade. Device is now stuck.
I have tried putting the various .zip files listed in the "Dummies Guide to fixing My Nook Won't Boot."
I have tried using various sized (128 mb, 4gb, 8gb) Clockwork recovery Images (that I write to my card via winimage) along with nook-complete-restore-1.0.1.zip adn also then with repartition-boot-with-stock.zip that i copy and paste onto the card that has the recovery images.
All attempts seem to have the same result:
With the uSD card out: I get "Touch the Future of Reading" then "android_" then the android robot splash screen where it hangs.
With the card in it just sits at a black screen.
I ahve also tried connecting with adb. My nook shows up as a usb device but i can't get a serial number from "Adb devices."
Any idea on how to get this back to something usable?
I really appreciate any help.

You need to boot with your recovery card out otherwise you will just keep rebooting to recovery. Also how long did you wait at the android splash screen? First boot can take a while as the Nook is building cache/dalvik. I believe mine took nearly 10 minutes to boot the first time. Have you tried the 8 failed boot reset yet?
I think i had done well more than 8 without seeing anything happen, but maybe not. This time i tried holding the power, the n, and the volume+, buttons and doing that twice in a row all of a sudden brought me into the recovery menu.
All is well now.

Android boot loop...and can't revert!

...my effort to install Android on my new NOOK Color went smoothly until it started to boot and the boot screen just keeps spinning.
Read many posts appearing to address this issue but reverting to a stock reader seems to require various apps only for a PC. Being a Mac weenie this leaves me out in the cold.
...is there a Mac-centric reader here who can help me return my NOOK into the reader it originally was?
I'm a bit gun shy now of making the device both an Android tablet and a reader! Thanks much in advance.
...addendum!
...playing around with the NOOK I was able to raise a reboot option which, to my surprise, cured whatever fault was behind the boot loop. A couple of spins and CM7 in all its glory appeared.
...but now I can only reboot into CM7...seems to be no option to boot into the original B&N book/magazine reader.
What am I missing? What's the "open sesame" to choose the reader? Tnx again.

One thing your missing is giving us information regarding your setup and what you want and/or are expecting.
Is this a SD install of CM7? If so... when you power it up... press and hold "n" button to get the boot menu... selecting eMMC / Normal boot will boot into stock.

...thanks much for the quick response.
...yes, I did an SD install of CM7 with all the Google apps, etc.
My objective is to be able to toggle back and forth between the B&N reader and the Android tablet. If this isn't possible I'd like to go back to the reader.
Unfortunately I can't get the boot menu with the "n" button when I power up. Andoid mounts and a white screen offers only "power off" or "re-boot"...no other options.
...following the instructions I used from the web for installing CM7 I removed the SD card before I formatted, etc. Is this an issue?
Looping Problem
Okay so I think I may have the same problem hopefully someone can help. So first I install CM7 and then it gave me when I tried opening the market so I was like okay... so then I downloaded and install manuelnooker and now im boot looping .. So I insert the SD and turn it on but it doesnt boot up to recovery. I only see CM7 and then it boot loops into Nook Color With the big N on top and the small android bottom right corner. Can anyone help me out on what is the best way to get back into recovery. I know if I turn it on while holding the N its says CM7 and in the bottom it shows recovery but never goes to it. Much help please..
Okay so I finally got into CWR but now it gives me an error formatting data when I select mounts and storage and select format data? Im trying to revert back the nook color using nook complete restore 1.0.1. and I try doing it format data in the opening screen but I flash the zip and boot loops. any help is much appreciated.. Thanks
...some progress!
...less sleep but some progress.
...after several unsuccessful attempts I finally got the NOOK to restore to factory specs with the "8 interrupted boot" sequence [can't post the URL because I don't have eight posts yet :-( ].
Wasn't necessary to do the second step described in the post...NOOK automatically did the restore after zeroing the data and my B&N account can be accessed without more.
...but now I no longer have Android capability. Is there any way to install a simple toggle mechanism for both on the same tablet?

You never fully described what you did to begin with. Did you follow specific steps on a site? If so, let's have the URL.....

Is my nook color forever bricked? Flashed nook tablet firmware like a goon..

I flashed the nook tablet firmware on my nook color, after a stressful day at work and not realizing what forum I was downloading roms from. All i get is a black screen, I have tried flashing recovery images with no success. Has anyone else done this and recovered?
Have you tried this?

Yea. I don't get any power at all to the screen. I have tried to flash cm7 recovery roms also with no success.

Tried using a CWM Bootable SD? Link
And also repartitioning the Nook by following this.
You might want to try holding the power button for a full 15 seconds... release it... and hold it again for a few seconds and see if it turns on then.

That is not supposed to be possible. There are assert checking codes in the zips to prevent that. How did you do it? Are you sure you have a nook color? The nook color has a black bezel and the nook tablet has a silver one.
Edit: I just looked at the CM9 alpha for the Tablet. It does not have an assert check in it. So I guess it is possible.
I recommend going to my tips thread linked in my signature and making the 5.5.0.4 CWM card. I would boot to that and wipe /system. That is where most of the files get put by the Tablet CM9 zip. The problem is going to be /boot. Some of the Tablet boot files are named the same as nook color, but are entirely different. (mlo, u-boot.bin). You need to get rid of those. Ordinarily flashing a new rom will replace those, but not sure they will now. You have two choices. Use adb to access /boot and remove the files. That takes a little expertise. Or you could use an older CWM (3.2.0.1 or older) card to wipe /boot (that option was removed in the new version, with good reason.) Ordinarily I tell people to never wipe boot because it wipes the CWM stored there too. But in your case you need to get rid of those tablet files.
EDIT 2: I just did some more research and all of the Tablet ROMs I could find did have assert checks in them. That one I referenced above was one I manually modified to install on a bootable SD. So I am having difficulty figuring out how you flashed a tablet ROM to your color. Since you have not responded to this post, I assume you figured it out, gave up, or were wrong.

I just flashed the newest build to my Nook Color and now the device will not turn on at all. I tried holding down 'power', 'n', as well as 'power', 'n', and 'volume +' and nothing happens. There is no flash on the screen - it is just blank. The device is fully charged, it just won't turn on. I have tried several times (and over several days) to try and turn it on, but to no avail. Any advice?

The NC will not try to turn on unless there are valid boot files in either the boot partition or an SD. Obviously your boot files are corrupted. Try booting with a bootable SD to see if you can get it to turn on. The battery must also be charged.

Stuck at "Touch the Future of Reading"

I've been looking at threads and blogs all over to try and find a fix that will work but I can't find one. I guess this is sort of my last hope.
I tried to update CM7 using ROM Manager. I selected to flash the ROM and create a backup, but when it turned back on it got stuck in a boot loop at the "Touch the Future of Reading" screen. I then tried to create a bootable clockwork recovery SD card, but it just will not work. I re-burned the image to the SD card 3 times so far. All the Nook does is display the "Touch the Future of Reading" screen indefinitely. It no longer is in a boot loop, it just won't get past this screen.
I'm completely out of ideas, if somebody could tell me what to do to make it boot into clockwork recovery I would be really grateful. Really, getting it to boot into anything would be great.

You are in a recovery bootloop with no recovery installed. Go to my tips thread linked in my signature and make a bootable CWM SD as described in my item A10. It has been modified to get you out of these kinds of bootloops. Then you can flash whatever new recovery or ROM (including stock) you want. But do it manually with CWM, not ROM Manager.
EDIT: From the symptoms, it sounds like you had stock on emmc and CM7 on SD (Touch the Future... is stock). If that was the case, your mistake was using ROM Manager with the SD install. It does not work. It only works with emmc installs of CM.
WinDiskImager always tell me "an error has occured when attempting to get a handle on the device. Error 8." so I always use the dd command on Ubuntu to burn the image. Still, I tried to make a bootable SD out of that and my Nook still won't get passed the "Touch the Future of Reading" screen. Also, whenever I try and open the file on the card with the burned image, it tells me the filesystem type is unknown and that I have to format the card to use it.

It is not burned properly if windows cannot read it. Did you use an external card reader rather than any built into your PC? You should. That error message in win32diskimager tells me your hardware is not working. You need to keep trying until it is burned right or it will never boot.

Help me define my boot issue

I believe my problem is addressed in several threads, but I can't find any description of the issue that matches my exact problem. So I am struggling with which process to follow to fix my problem.
Background: I attempted to install TWRP recovery using ROM manager (perhaps my mistake?). The nook was already rooted and running stock ROM with Dallgrin kernel.
Result: When I boot without a SD card installed it gets to the Read Forever screen and then shuts down. When I boot from a CWM sd card (which I used for initial rooting) it shows the splash screen with the skull and crossbones, and then shuts down. I don't ever get into recovery.
I would appreciate it if anyone can point me to the right directions for repair or at least tell me what the appropriate terminology is for this problem (I don't believe it is a recovery boot loop). Thanks.
