Choppy video playback - Galaxy S II General

Does anyone get choppy video playback on some videos? I have noticed it when streaming some videos from youtube and other websites.

No cant say i have, on the contrary video playback has been excellent

Are you using the stock browser or something else?

What rom are you using? I had this problem but its because the rom set the read ahead speed too large. Use sd booster from market if you're rooted and check what read speed is. It should be 128kb.

I'm using Villain rom 2.1 but I have noticed the problem standard firmware to. It does it on stock browser and tried a few other browsers to.
Read speed is 128kb.

Any particular videos?

wfi, 3g or both? does it get better if you reduce the size to 360p or are you view through the youtube app, if so try viewing though the desktop version to see if there is any difference, like other say it could be your ROM so search on the ROM thread for known issues.

I've seen it happen too on some flash video's site. I think it's all about the same site here . Nasty

videos up til 720p work fine, 1080p doesn't work at all for me

I noticed it on this video:

Watch with the youtube app on HIGH QUALITY its a bit choppy like its struggling to buffer. You notice it more when you skip through a few mins.

Choppy video playback

I didn't see any other threads relating to this - any else have video playback that pauses every few seconds? Seems to happen to me for just about any online video, youtube, etc.
Same here, no surprise another problem with the phone.
Same problem here. Seems to be more pronounced while the video is being downloaded. Once it is, the playback seems to be smoother.
I think it's an internet issue as downloaded videos play perfectly.

I'll disagree. There's a progress bar on most video/YouTube streams. I pause to let my crappy DVP buffer said videos and even when a video is half-loaded the thing will still stutter along until the download is COMPLETELY finished.
Personally I think it's related to WiFi as downloading over cellular data doesn't always result in the stutter.
My coworkers HD7 doesn't have the same issues while streaming videos over WiFi.

New YouTube app with 720p support!

UPDATE: Please close this thread, theos0o has created a modded youtube apk that allows playing HD with any DPI! Get it here
-----------------------------------------------
http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/02/youtube-android-app-update-brings-hd-video-streaming-to-capable/
Need!
I went to Galaxy Note forums, they dumped the apk that allowed them to do that. Unfortunately, it's the same 2.4.4 YouTube, and I didn't notice any difference. No HQ option, only HD (how the hell is 480p "HD", I will never know).
So I'm assuming there's a screen rez or phone model number check that doesn't allow 720p streaming in the app.
I'm hoping our brilliant devs can come up with a tweak to allow for HD streaming on SGSII.
P.S: if you think there's no difference between 480p and 720p on SGSII screen - oh boy, have you been missing out, son.
P.P.S: I'm not an idiot. Before you down-vote the thread, actually get off your lazy ass and see the difference between 480p and 720p video on SGS2.
UPDATE: If you're running Youtube app v2.4.4 (GB) or 3.x (ICS), set your DPI in build.prop to 182 and you'll have 720p video in youtube =)
Calling on devs to make a hack for the app to make it always think you're running high-dpi, without the need to change it there.. That'd be awesome!
Do you feel that there is a perceivable difference between 800/854*480 and 1280/720 on our S2?

Yes, there is a very, very significant difference.
Watch any of the Starcraft II commentaries in 480p then try it in 720p. You'll just how much better it is.
I think it has to do with subpixels, pixels on samoled just don't traslate the same as on a regular lcd screen, I think. Whatever the reason, there's a huge difference.
Im on 182dpi rom and it seems that my youtube videos are in 720p... Tried in browser 480p and it is much more pixelated than hd option in youtube app... In the app the hd option is awesome...

I just set 182 DPI in build.prop and I got HD option!! Yay!! Looks awesome.
If only someone would hack it into always allowing for HD video, without the need to run high DPI settings..
Im on vertrema 4.8... I do it with dpi changer from market... Sometimes is necessary to wipe market settings to make it recognise the changed dpi...

The difference probably has more to do with the higher bitrate and less compression that youtube applies to 720p videos compared to 480p ones than with the resolution, since a widescreen 480p video at 852x480 is already larger than the dimensions of the SGS2 screen. The SGS2 has a normal RGB subpixel layout and even if it did have a pentile matrix or anything else, the picture would still get sent to the screen in its nominal resolution of 800x480.
That said, I can certainly believe that a 720p version would look better and is worth trying.
Yeah, I'm not entirely certain why 720p looks better than 480p, maybe because the down-sampling that youtube makes is worse than when the video is down-sampled by SGSII on-the-fly. Better algorithms, perhaps.
Whatever the case, I'm happy now =) I just hope someone hacks the app so that it reports high-DPI even when build.prop has 240 or whatever.
I Update the YouTube APP and don't play videos in HD, only on HQ, the SGSII doesn't support HD?
Check my mod guys!

@theos0o, I have been using your Modded Youtube 3.5.5 on my CM9(ICS) Rom and it works. I get to see videos in HD(720p). Thanks for the great youtube mod.
Note: If any one is using CM9 nightlies Rom then the latest version of the gapps does not have the youtube app. Just download the modded youtube app from the above link and install it. If you had installed the youtube app from the play store then just simply remove it and install this one.

Youtube videos in HD stutter

I am on Task650's ICS, now with yoda 3.1.10 Kernel.
Even with overclocking to 1,2 GHz my youtube videos still stutter heavily when played in HD (720p). In SD they play fine. Is the tab really to weak to play HD youtube videos? Or does anyone have a hint what I could still try?
using the YouTube app the HD video plays smoothly, are you doing it via the browser?

No, I am using the youtube app 4.0.23, but I currently think it might also be an issue with the video itself that I am watching...

HD vids used to play fine on Honeycomb, it's ever since ICS came along the issues started.
I have yet to find a solution to completely quell the stutter. It only appears a little bit, but it's still annoying.

stock ital ics with A1 1.7 kernel. no probs in watching hd vids so far

Youtube video quality...

I have the settings to high quality on mobile but for some reason none of the videos I play are crisp. I tried the app the browser tried searching hd videos but everything seems to be pixelated to some extent? Anyone else having the same issues?

I thought i had that issue at first too. But i switched to Wifi and it came in clear. I dont know why, but 3g never gets videos clear for me. I had this issue on the SIII as well.
Videos play on "High Quality" over 3G. When on WiFi and I belive 4G also, video play in "HD". That is why it looks better over WiFi. There is a YouTube app floating around that has a setting that will allow you to watch videos in HD over 3G. However, 3G doesnt tend to have good enough speeds for solid playback in HD.

Could someone please test this for me. Make sure the video is playing in HD and look for every so slight choppy playback in the video. You will need something action packed.
Cheers!
mine is ok it depends on the speed of your connection.

Maybe I see it more then you do? Try using SmartTube from the app store. Plays a lot smoother and 1080p . It also allows you to set the video quality from 240p to 1080p and everything in between. Sorted out all my youtube playback issues.
Haven't encountered any problems.
The linked video also works fine (after waiting for it to load, slow internet connection).
Is it choppy for the entire video?
I.e. do you get this just for some videos, but then it's for the entire video, or does it happen just for part of the video?

Yeah all videos but heres the kicker. Using an app called Smart Tube I have no issues at 1080p playback. Perfectly smooth! Using the stock youtube app is choppy for me.
