[Q] What tablet to get? - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hello, im looking for the best tablet i can get for about $400 ($500 if bestbuy has it for a decent price). I was thinking about getting this. I plan on watching movies on it and browsing the web. I'll prob never leave the house with it. Do you guys think this would be worth getting?

All the software is pretty much the same with the exception of the XOOM because it's on Android 3.2.
What it comes down to is the price and hardware.
Galaxy Tab: Slimness, Light, no MicroSD
Transformer: Cheap, IPS screen, dock (extended battery life, 2 USBs), microSd
Acer: 1 USB on the tablet itself, microSD
etc etc.... make your decision quick, -$100 coupon is available @ staples with some other retailers honoring their coupon as well.

The Transformer and if I remember correctly the Acer both have hdmi too.

Should i get the transformer or wait?
How do i use the -$100 coupon? thanks.

Here's my list of all the tablets I've owned and returned before sticking with the transformer-
-Toshiba thrive- dim screen compared to transformer, brick, lots of ports though, don't see it having a lot of support
-transformer- liked it but wanted to try some others
-galaxy tab- nice screen(transformers just as nice), thin/light, no ports or SD support(why samsung?), very soft plastic surrounding screen, got dinged/knicked with hardly any use(this is the one my wife decided to keep, wasn't for me though)
-xoom- screen isn't that bad, but transformer/gtab10.1 screen is noticeably better, brick(didn't bother me , just putting it out there as It's probably the heaviest), power button on back is sometimes annoying, immediate updates wasn't worth the trade for decrease in screen quality to me
Now I'm back to the transformer to stay. Its got the perfect balance of ports/size/looks/accessories to warrant me keeping it over the others. the fact that its the cheapest out of all of them is just an added bonus.

Alright, I decided to go with the transformer after reading reviews / looking in other sections. Does anyone know the cheapest place in the US to buy them?

Try starting with the Staples coupon. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177461 is the read. Try going through them. From what I've been told,
- Office depot will honor the coupon for Transformer ONLY if the nearby Staples have the Transformer in stock.
- Go to Staples and see if they have the Transformer
Newegg and Amazon have pretty good values for Transformer if you can't get a purchase with the Staples coupon.
@curti.nogg: Absolutely. I was just giving a list of features on the top of my head.
Only thing I dislike about the Transformer is the charger cable is really short but I have a USB3 M-F extender so that fixed it.

Thanks so much.

I played with that new Acer tab at Bestbuy, and I noticed some things.

The screen appears to show more detail, but even in mild lighting you can see dots all over the screen. IMO the Xoom screen is better because of this.
It is noticeably lighter than the xoom.
The screen rotates really, REALLY fast. Not stupid overly sensitive fast like the iPad 2, but ALOT faster than my xoom and the store display's xoom. This made me a bit jealous. What can we do to have our Xoom's screens rotate faster? Go to Best Buy and play with the Acer tab there to see what I mean.
I also played with that new 3D tab at a t-mobile booth I think it was, and believe the 3d functions of it to be absolutely useless. I do however feel that the 8.9 inch screen size may allow for slightly better portability.
TLDR - Acer tab has MUCH better screen rotation speeds than the Xoom. Why, and what can we do to match it?

It would be nice if Honeycomb/Android included sensitivity adjustments for things like this. On my DX the rotations are too sensitive and I wish I could tone it down some.
Have you tried downloading spare parts and setting the animations to fast?
I don't know if it will help at all, but I think mines snappy...little slower than my Epic, but it has a lot more pixels to deal with, so I can see the difference being justified.
Too bad you didnt get a look at the kernel version. Wonder if its newer.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
damn it i didnt even think of that. I'm probably going to near bestbuy again tomorrow so I'll check it for you.
Kcarpenter, the spare parts settings dont seem to do anything.
Acer A500
Kernel version is 3.0.1. The unit I played with I did not notice any grid dots the unit was very response and I did like my thumb never got into screen area. I often fat thumb the screen on my xoom which resulted in unwanted action.
I like the Acer Iconia A500. Not really noticed any issues with mine apart from the dots.
There not as bad as your making them out to be. You can only really seem them in strong direct light. There apparently used for more precision. Not really noticed any diffrence compaired to my x10 and dell streak.
The boarder is nice and stops any interferance with the user placing his hand in the wrong place.
In the end there pretty much the same device with a diffrent shell. The xoom does look alot better though..
Here is the kernel version

Have to say I'm thoroughly impressed by the Eee Pad Transformer. Very nice device and $300 cheaper for the 32GB (yes, I know it doesnt have 3g.)
Moto is going to pay for that horrible pricepoint.

How can Eee pad be $300 cheaper ?
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
No offense but this is a perfect example of what an average consumer looks at not knowing how to compare apples to apples. There are two different Xoom models, one with 3G/4G and one WiFi only. Also, all Xoom's have 32GB internal memory. The average consumer looks at the price and nothing else and many times, makes their purchasing decision on that alone without knowing what they are actually getting. This is the main reason we need to see 16GB WiFi only Xoom's.
so how about making our rotation speeds more comparable to the acer?

If you read what I wrote I'm comparing to the 32GB Eee Pad, not the 16GB (which is $399)
Seeing how the only difference between the 32GB Eee Pad and 32GB Xoom 3G is the 3G modem, are you really trying to say that the 3G modem validates a $300 price difference??!! Even the Ipad charges a $130 premium on the modem...NOT $300!
Furthermore, if we compare the Eee Pad 32GB to the Xoom Wifi 32GB...the Eee Pad is still $100 cheaper.

So it's only $100 cheaper, not $300, ^^!
Ipad 32 Gb 3G is $729. Xoom 32GB 3G is $799, yoy spend $70 bucks for upgrade to 4G. It's still not overprice at all.
The only problem is Motorola don't release 16GB Xoom wifi version.
Does the Asus or Acer tablet offer LTE 4g?
If you think for one second that the Acer or Asus are using equally expensive components and charging $300 less, you need a quick education on economics.
I remember being all-consumed with price when I was younger. Now I adhere to the "pay now, enjoy later" mentality.

The Acer and Asus are WiFi only at this point.
The WiFi Xoom is $100 to $200 more expensive than both with generally the same internals.

There's no doubt Acer and Asus are cutting corners somewhere on hardware to increase their profits. With PCs they would use a cheaper brand of internal components which often resulted in lesser performance, consistency, and/or quality. However, some of the cost difference is probably that they are not marketing the devices as much and have always been the low cost alternative PC/Laptops. I don't remember seeing Asus or Acer take out a $1.5M 30 second SuperBowl ad...
These companies certainly have their place in the game and probably fit some peoples wants/needs. Many people don't find the nuances of the lesser priced alternatives until they go to do something the device won't allow and by then it's too late!

There are other minor differences that may or may not matter. Concerning the Xoom, it supports 802.11 a/b/g/n. Some people may consider the 5ghz spectrum when weighing pros and cons of both devices. The ASUS has the more desireable screen. So when you consider it is $589 vs $499 (add $149 for the dock vs $~70 for the motorola BT keyboard) its not that huge of a deal breaker. I am unsure about the ASUS model having a barometer, and I don't even know who would care about that but someone might. Just saying, there are going to be a host of little things that set all these devices apart and all things considered, I still believe that the XOOM offers the most flexibility.

Wow could that guy be more objective. Only thing I liked was the wallpaper which I have. Keyboard... if I really want a keyboard to carry around I would prefer my Bluetooth. Much better when xoom is connected to my TV. No led flash? He stated performance over and over. I have had no problems with performance. Asus has price advantage that's about all I got out of that.

Lol. The only thing I got out of that review was that the I PS display is nicer which I already knew. Other than that the xoom wins with 3/4g. Nice review.
And the keyboard is optional...costing an extra $150.

I ordered a 16GB Eeepad Transformer with the dock for $550. Can't touch a 32GB WiFi only Xoom for that.
The guy did give a very shiny review, and may not have been completely fair to the Xoom since it has had updates since he reviewed it... but the Asus does have some value for it's price.
As someone mentioned on another forum, Moto is going to have to reevaluate the price point. When they first came out, they had no real competition in the Android tablet market. The Xoom could only really be compared to the iPad, which is pretty insanely priced.

if you include the official kb for the xoom at retail - not special reduced price - it's $670 with no dock or anything included to hold it up.
minus would be no usb port for the transformer without the dock. if i were docked i'd love to hook a hard drive. minus for xoom is that you won't have usb host without root.

With speech to text, which works quite a bit better on my Xoom than on my Android phone, keyboards are not nearly a necessity as they used to be. I showed a die hard Apple guy at work how STT worked on my Xoom, and he was stunned. I made sure to point out iPad and iPhone didn't have that capability.
Even tough he shouldn't have slammed the the Xoom so hard; I fully agree in his right to state what he likes best and whatnot.
The reviewer failed to understand that he was comparing against the original android version on the Xoom not the updated version that we have today. He also failed to notice the glitches in the keyboard dock that was found in the anandtech review which was a far better assessment. The build quality is not up to Motorola's level. Why do some reviewers often compare prices of a wifi only product with the 3G Xoom? Checkout the below link. Take note of his final words.

Because a $300 premium is too much to justify just a modem.
I do agree with your other points regarding Honeycomb software versions on the Xoom. At the same time, I believe the anandtech reviewer stated that the dock was running a preproduction firmware and that Asus said that would be addressed in th final firmware.

Thank you. I was about to point this out.
The Eee Pad Dock = $149 (includes extra battery, ports, trackpad)
Moto Keyboard - 69.99 + Moto Portfolio Case - 39.99 = $110
So the difference is really $40 and you're actually getting something for that money.
I just got extremely lucky, I purchased a brand new xoom wifi on ebay. For $485. So I'm happy with the price. And for that price it's beats the 16gb transformer any day.

Sorry, but it's $210 more for the 3g/4g Xoom than the wifi Xoom, not $300.
The wifi Xoom (at $590) is $90 more than the 32gb Transformer (at $500).
You can't compare the $400 16gb Transformer to the $800 32gb 3g/4g Xoom.

3.2 XOOM or the Asus Transformer?

I am debating to get my first tablet. But having a hard time deciding if I should get the Xoom or the Asus Transformer. Or should I wait to see whats coming in the next few months...
I researched and seems that the negative reviews of the Xooms was when it first came out so wanted some feedbacks from new owners or reviewers.

Rank these if your looking at the 32 gb models
1. Build quality
2. Updates
3. Price
if #2 is price then get the transformer
If you care about 1 + 2 then get the xoom.
If your worried about it being outdated then buy it from a place with a 90 day return policy for electronics

I don't know how you can do better on price than $399. at Staples for the fabulous Xoom.
Important to me is features and quality. I'm stuck between the two because I do like motorla products but the features on the TF looks great too. I've heard the TF has a better screen than the Xoom too. Is the correct?
Also, is there a retailer that has 90 return that can match the staples coupon?

Yea I just got the Asus today for a friend and paid $299 for that you really can't go wrong. The screen does look better and you have to ability to get the keyboard to make it a net book. I do not know where he picked it up from but you can get it at Office Depot and they will honor the Staples coupon. Office Depot honored the coupon without any debate for me but if they do you can always point them to their policy:

How does our Price Match Guarantee work for in-store purchases?
If you find a lower price at another store on a new, identical item, show us the lower price at the time of purchase and we will match it on the spot. Or show us the lower price within 14 days of your Office Depot purchase and we will pay you the difference. Our price is the final price you pay after any discounts, coupons, instant savings and mail-in savings are applied. We will match the other store's point-of-sale price after deducting their instant rebates and coupons. We will not match the other store's mail-in rebates nor will we deduct the value of any gift with purchase.

MOBO Player, no lag at all. Used ANYDVDHD and DVDCATALYSTS 4 (Beta for Blu-Ray). Works Great
I have both devices and I am still trying to decide which one I like more. The Xoom is built better, no question. The TF has build quality issues, no question. The TF has IPS screen technology, a much better screen than the Xoom but you will deal with light leakage around the edges. The TF offers the keyboard dock which is probably my favorite feature. When I go anywhere with it, I can simply close it and set it down to protect the screen or case, then undock it with a simple slide button. I hate setting my Xoom down, it seems to leave it vulnerable to scratches or damage.
So my best advise is that no matter what you buy today, there will be a better device tomorrow. By Q4 2011, we should have a Tegra3 processor and Android 4 ICS. Then I will pony up for a "best device" and I'll be happy, for a week or so...
*EDIT*
Just for grins, I took a couple of pictures of the Xoom and TF side-by-side. Screen brightness set to 100% on all devices. TF on the left, Xoom on the right. Looking straight-on at the devices, there is a such a small difference. But at any side-to-side angle, the TF is definately better.

Q: How often do you need to view it from the side? Won't the Xoom offer more privacy from "prying eyes?"

[Q] Why I Bought a A500 (and Not Avoiding Apple)

I didn't buy my Iconia to spite Apple. My experience with the A500 is quite unusual. I was definately not in the market to buy a tablet when of all things, I saw a Rent-A-Center ad on TV for the Acer Iconia A500. I thought it'd be cool to give it a try!
I tried (the brand-new in a sealed box) the Iconia A500 and just fell in love. I read up on the Internet, I saw YouTube videos, I was sold on it. So there I was, paying rental fees on the Iconia and I knew I'd soon have to pay the first month (my deposit was like $50!) and that'd be just over $100.00. That's about 1/4th the cost of one to own, so that was a predicament.
I had the Iconia a week, was still paid up and bought one at OfficeDepot for $449. I turned the rental Iconia in after a week, still paid-up and surprised the salesman! Within a week, OfficeDepot and Wal-Mart were advertising them for $399, so I took mine back to OfficeDepot and the store manager was freaking out, afraid I was returning it. They happily gave me the 50 bucks on their price guarantee program. Wasn't sure if they had one, but figured I'd complain about their price and Wal-Mart's price. Didn't have to when the store mgr found out I wasn't returning it, so I left with 50 bucks!!!
I say this long, convoluted story for a reason. The Rent-a-Center I got that from had me on a waiting list to get it, so RAC's across the nation are putting thousands out there in the field. I loved it and ended up buying one. I'm sure I won't be the only one.
Thank God they weren't renting Ipad2s! I would have had no idea about .3 MP front and .97 MP rear cameras. mini and full-sized USB ports, HDMI you don't have to have a dongle to use as well as MicroSD! They don't "warn" Ipad 2 buyers about lacking all of those things the Iconia has for $100 less now after the price reduction! They don't tell you most of the Ipad 2 applications cost money while most of the Android apps are free. Heck, the game Need for Speed had me sold for quality gaming on the A500!
What made you buy the Acer Iconia A500?
I bought mine after giving up on the cheap chinatabs that lack support.
Very happy with my A500.
Not intending to put down the ipad 2. In fact, I think it is quite an engineering marvel. But no matter how much I try to like it, it still feels like an oversized iphone to me.

Well i have both and think both have their unique place for me and like both of them
I bought mine because it's my 3rd Android tab and I wanted 3.x on tablets. The UI improvements for me are amazing. I also own an iphone 4, so I don't need an apple product. That'll likely be my last Apple purchase however. Once I see how Android 4.x pans out on mobiles instead of just tablets, I will likely replace my iphone with one. I will probably keep the iphone around though. It costs roughly 40USD to unlock them here, so selling it might be an option also.
Another reason I got the Iconia is it was too hard to get the Transformer when it launched. Kind of glad that was the case now.
I returned a Toshiba Thrive after 2 weeks due to the sleep bug, and waited a bit. I found the Staples coupon for any tablet, $100 off. By this time the Iconia had come down from $449 to $399 and Staples was out of everything other than the Xoom and Galaxy. I didn't want either, but found that OfficeDepot would honor the Staples coupon on select models, the 16gb Iconia being one. So, for $299 plus tax I walked out with one!
One of the keys to the Iconia is the Gorilla Glass, http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/products-with-gorilla/acer , and the nice aluminum body. Honeycomb 3.1 and I'm a happy camper.

Thinking between the Xoom and Xoom Family

I just had 2 quick questions.
1) Does the family edition have a notification light like the original? I see a thing that looks like a light on the side, but I dont see anyone confirming it works like the original one.
2) I plan on using the camera a lot (I am being serious), but I was wondering if the lack of 2nd flash makes a real difference.
Thanks to anyone that can answer this!
I have the original Xoom and I'm happy with it. However, if I was buying a new tablet today, I'd pass on Motorola as the Asus Transformer Prime is the best out there right now. The camera on the TP specifically got high marks in the reviews.
The Xoom Family is $400 w/16gB and the TP is $500 with 32gB, but the $100 difference buys you so much more than 32gB.
Bad news is TP just started shipping and they're tough to get. You may also want to see what is announced next week at CES.

I thank you for the reply, but I got a transformer atm. I love it mostly for the apps it has, but it feels awkward to hold. I love the feel of the Xoom so I am jumping ship. Since I dont play games/do much past email/posting news/editing (during conventions) I was looking for something more professional. I love the status light of the Xoom, but I like the Family edition more. However that stupid light is a deal breaker so I want to know ><

I'm on my second prime that I'm getting ready to return. between the dead pixel, light bleed and both non working GPS is driving me crazy. the camera is not better than the xoom in most cases the xoom is better in low light especially video recording. if I were to pay more than 400 today then I would try my luck to find a prime with working GPS and no screen issue. but I only paid 340 total for my xoom with three chargers (2 home 1 car) and a portfolio case so this makes the prime not worth it for me. only wish the xoom comes with IPS display, the prime thanks to IPS + is so easy to view outdoor.
Too bad about the quality problems because on paper the specs sound great. I had one on pre-order for weeks but cancelled it as my usage really isn't the gaming and the Xoom works fine for what I'm doing. One think I wanted it for was notes as it said it had a pressure sensing display. I decided to wait and see what CES brings. Maybe a real Xoom 2 or the next Thinkpad.
