No text messages - EVO 4G General

Okay, i'm rooted and have been Running MIUI for a few months without issue.. Last Friday i did a FULL WIPE (factory reset, cache and delvik) and upgraded to the newest 1.7.15 MIUI ROM -- everything worked fine.. except for my text messages.. I wasn't receiving any.. I could send them out fine.. i just dont get any.. so after i tried to do EVERYTHING to fix it.. nothing worked, and i decided, oh well I'll flash back to Sense until next release.. Well i flashed back to sense (Did a full wipe, then a nandroid restore) and my Text messages STILL do not work.. I have never used Google Voice, but i was told that could be the cause, so i opened it and turned it on.. and i was able to get text messages to my google voice box) I do not like google voice, nor do i want to use google voice.. So i then went from my PC and disabled google voice from within my PC's browser, and i then uninstalled it. Now i'm back to not being able to receive text messages...
Does anyone have ANY idea what so ever could be the cause of this? I am completely stumped. I thought 100% it was an issue with MIUI, but i cant even get them on my Sense ROM.. All of my calls and sent text messages work fine, but i receive no incoming text, nor notifications or anything that i'm getting any texts... Yet if i use google voice, i can get my text messages..
Any help would be greatly appreciated
I have also Updated my Profile and PRL
if i go into HTC Software Updates it says there is a 2.3 Gingerbread update 4.24.651.1 (6.07MB)
but i am on the rooted stock gingerbread version of that i believe, unless another update came out after the original June 4th gingerbread release, because ever since then i've been on MIUI anyway
EDIT:
I just attempted a Full factory reset, and i still cannot get any text messages
I am chatting with sprint and he told me to try these codes in the phone dialer
##DATA#
##72786#
and they used to work, but now it just freezes my phone dialer and nothing happens...
What the hell is going on? EVERYTHING ELSE works just fine except for receiving text messages

google voice
if you have sprint with Google Voice Enabled on every time you install Google voice it disables incoming text to your number, click on the gear on the right top corner on your Google voice account page - Click Voice Settings - Click Edit on your phone number - make sure this is checked.
Text Settings:
X - Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)

Question #2 --
The sprint guy i'm talking to said he will waive the $100 insurance fee and ship me a new phone if i want.. If i agree to this, will the new phone ship with a 2.3 gingerbread version that is unable to be rooted?
Or have they finally rooted that also? Last i checked i heard people who accepted the OTA update lost their root and there was no way to get it back

I actually just got a refurb a couple of days ago, they seem to all be coming with new hboot. So no root yet.

Well i did re-download google voice, but i never enabled it or even ran it for that matter, and i have sense enabled it and used it.. then disabled it and i still do not get any texts

Not rooted yet but there are a few people working on it. A few days ago a leaked video from AlpharevX showed they unlocked the 3d and sensation, and according to them this method works for all current HTC bootloaders. So if you don't mind not having root for a while get one, if not then don't switch. Who knows how long before a root method actually gets out for the Evo with 2.3.3. Could be today or next month.

did you try what i mentioned above go to google.com/voice (on your computer) and make sure that option is on. This only happens when you Enable your sprint number with Google voice.

Yes i have been on google voice all morning, but when i click on the gear in the top corner now nothing happens, i cant get into settings ever since i disabled google voice, all that happens is a little blue bar appears on the same page.. are you suggesting that i re-download google voice, set it up again and then i'll be able to go back into the account settings? because so long as it's disabled i am unable to view any google voice setting page

That's weird... it might be your browser it should let you add a number even though you don't have any on there.

I found this thread in the google voice and my issue has apparently happened to this person also and he was not able to resolve it, and actually had to get a new phone.. Which is what i think I'M going to have to do, but i DONT want to do that because i hate SENSE, and i want to run MIUI... but there is no root for the new OTA 2.3 gingerbread, does anyone have ANY IDEAS? how can i completely disconnect google voice?

Panic Eye.. I have re-downloaded google voice, and i am using it now.. as it's the only way i can get text messages, after searching and searching i have found a plethora of people who are having my exact same issue.. and i have yet to find a single one who has found a fix for the problem.. all of them say that sprint just suggests new phones to them.. this is nuts.. it's obviously a google voice issue, but no matter how many times i disable google voice from my pc, or from my phone, it doens't fix it.. I've even done a full factory reset and didn't log into my gmail account.. which should definitely get rid of any google voice crap, but it doesn't .. so maybe it's a phone problem? i have no idea.. i'm completely stumped

Honestly I doubt it's your phone, it has something to do with sprint/google integration. I would try to convince a Sprint rep to deactivate and reactivate your phone, can't really think of anything else you could do besides attempting to re-enable Google Voice with the Google Voice app and try to access the settings on the browser again.

Bump -- Any help at all? Has no one else ever experienced this

not receiving sms
I believe I have the same problem. It's pretty frustrating.

[BUG] Ghost Message Waiting Indicator in AOSP 2.1 / 2.0.1

This is the only thing that has stopped me from making the switch to one of Darchstar's new ROMs. I was very hesitant to make a thread about this but I've received PMs from other people experiencing the same issue. Here's hoping we can get this figured out.
Whenever I install a 2.1 or 2.0.1 ROM I get a notification telling me that I have a voicemail waiting. I click the notification and it automatically dials *86.
"Thanks for calling Helio by Virgin Mobile. Please enter your mobile number beginning with your area code." That's definitely not right.
I call my Sprint Voicemail box and I have no messages. I call myself and leave a message and then delete it. Nothing.
I go into "Call Settings" and change my voicemail number and the notification remains.
I registered with Google Voice. The notification stayed. I left a Google Voice voicemail and deleted it... no change.
I RUU'd, re-rooted and flashed darchstar's ROM. Mockingly, the notification appeared immediately.
I installed Flip's 2.1 Sense ROM and the Indicator showed up immediately, but I was able to clear it in the Settings menu. (Settings > Call Settings > Clear Voicemail Notification) -- This option isn't available in the AOSP ROMs. I've tried to push the settings APK from Flip's ROM, but of course the settings program does nothing but forceclose on AOSP.
I'd just switch to Flip's ROM and manually remove Sense, but AFAIK there is no fix for the Market in that ROM as of yet.
I've also called Sprint regarding the issue. I hoped that a simple reset of my voicemail box would resolve the issue. No dice. I did, however, confuse the heck out of a Tech Support representative at least.
I am not nearly as experienced with Android Development as I'd like to be, but I am trying to learn. I've poked through the SDK documentation and it seems like I might be able to completely disable that notification if I knew what I was doing a little better. This would be fine being that I've fully switched my voicemail box to Google Voice.
I have managed to get the notification to go away for a period of time. If I wipe, flash, wipe, flash enough I'll boot and the notification won't be there. Each and every single time it comes back eventually. I got it to go away for approx 7 hours about a week ago. I was so pissed when it came back...
The closest thing to a solution that I've came across is going into framework-res and removing the PNG for the voicemail notification. At least, I don't have to stare at that icon all day long that way.
Does anyone have any ideas that I haven't covered above?
You know Im right there with you. I have tried just about everything you outlined and I still couldnt get it to go away more than a few hours. Fresh 2.1 did slightly help the situation by being able to clear it but as soon as I restarted, there it was again.
Just out of curiosity Illogic, have you tried a new Micro SD card?

That I have not. I would be very surprised if that fixed it, but I suppose it is worth looking at at this point.

I have been waiting on a 8gb class 6 for 2 and a half weeks. I was gonna test when it came in. I have partitioned many times but I wonder if it is possible something is just stuck on it and its causing this issue. I dont know, maybe im just on my last ideas about it.
I have a feeling that it has something to do with the fact that we are missing visual voicemail on these unofficial builds.
When we receive a Sprint Voicemail on a ROM without VVM we get a SMS message that would normally be filtered out by the VVM app. When you clear your voicemail box you get a SMS that looks like it's meant to turn the message waiting indicator off, but the phone doesn't recognize it.
Been pulling my hair out over this for too long.

He mentioned that he had in the first post. It was also stated that there is no way to remove the icon. If he is like me, the icon is annoying.
No, he mentioned he tried giving himself a voicemail in his Google Voice number. I mean switching from Sprint Voicemail over to Google Voicemail. That's what I did and I solved this problem.

Illogic, I did it on Freshs 2.1 and it worked because Freshes has the clear voice mail option in settings. Not to mention, for some reason Freshs also integrated GV into the voice mail settings. It was actually pretty cool.
What I did was change the Voicemail setting in AOSP 2.1 to Google Voicemail. I just left it at that (didn't change it back to Sprint) because I like GV better. But I don't get the ghost notification with my voicemail handled by GV.

Yeah, I noticed your posts in the ROM thread regarding that. Just if we could, somehow, get that ported to the AOSP ROMs we'd be golden.

[Guide] Getting ride of the Phantom Voice Mail Icon (NOT THE TEXT MESSAGE ISSUE)

Thanks to a suggestion made by a follow XDA Member (Can't remember his name sorry!!)
Actually you can fix the Voice Mail Icon issue!!! The one that shows up in the top left corner, NOT the text mail issue.
Takes an OLD sprint phone and some time.
First, put your EVO back to a STOCK ROOTED ROM.
Get your old phone out of the junk drawer (HAS TO BE A NON ANDROID PHONE) and call Sprint. Have the OLD phone switched back onto your account (thus removing your EVO from your account).
Once the OLD phone is activated follow all the steps to activate your voice mail account.
Call your phone from a land line phone and leave yourself a message, then call your voice mail on your old phone and delete it. MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO OTHER MESSAGES IN YOUR YOUR VOICE MAIL ACCOUNT.
Now you can call Sprint back and reset up your EVO. Once your EVO is all set up your EVO will reprovision your VM account. Follow all the instructions to get your VM account setup again. This would be a good time to update all the radios, PRI and PRL and make sure you update your profile.
No go back into recovery and wipe all and either NAN Droid back to your old ROM or start fresh. If you Nandroid back to a ROM with the VM Icon on it, don't worry it will clear off.
Use Google Voice if you can from this point forward. I have flashed many AOSP ROMs since going through all these steps and I no longer have to STARE at the stupid VM Icon.
Bump this back up for those that might not have seen this fix. Takes some time to get it all done but I keep seeing post on how to get rid of the Voicemail Icon.
This process works perfectly.
Thanks, I'm tempted to try, but such a pain in the ass.

Yes it is but I am soooo glad that damn ICON is gone it was worth the time and effort. I have flashed back and forth between Sense and AOSP ROMs several times in the last few weeks and I have NOT had the voice Mail ICON sense.
Fixed!!!!!!!!! Posted my update on page 2 of this thread.
Thank you for posting this and explaining the issue in the unofficial CM7 thread. I was getting sick of people saying "use Google Voice" when they have no idea what they are talking about.
I have an old Samsung phone...may try this.

Unfortunately there us no other way. The problem lies with the voice mail that was trapped in your que... so to speak before you went to an Android phone.

I just tried this on my Sprint Hero and it worked like a charm. I have three small things to add:
1. You actually don't even have to call Sprint or chat. All you have to go is log onto mysprint.sprint.com, on the main page scroll down to your device, and select "Activate a new phone" from the "Manage my device" pulldown.
2. If you get a "Data Call Failure: Error Code 67" message when you first reactivate your Hero/Evo, just update your Profile and everything should be fine. You may need wifi to do this.
2. I would recommend that once you switch back to your Hero/Evo, flash a new rom rather than nandroiding back to one with the voicemail issue. I chose to try a nandroid first, and the issue was still present (although this may have been because I had GV messages in my inbox, not sure on this). However, as soon as I booted up a clean copy of AOSP, the notification was gone.
I have been searching for a fix for this issue for months. Thank you so much for posting this!
Hey, this is great. I hate talking to sprint, and that was the only thing stopping me. Will try this tonight. Thanks!

Same here. It helped that I had a land-line, and 2 sprint phones (EVO and my old dumb-phone)
I think I got lucky yesterday though. The night before I got up to level 3 tech and all they did was re-provision my voicemail account and that didn't fix it. Re-provisioning the voicemail does nothing, so you can tell them that if they want to try that first... it is a waste of time.
I got a level 1 guy yesterday and luckily, he had seen this problem before and was so easy to work with.
One thing he mentioned that may help people... when he sent me a voicemail on my old phone to delete, he marked the voicemail as URGENT. Not sure why that may help, but it worked for me.
I can use MIUI now without any New Voicemail (2) notifications!!!!!!!!!! I never thought I would see the day. Big thanks to the original poster.
Not sure, but I think you would be able to re-provision using EPST. Back in the Hero days when we lost data we would dial ##data# and enter MSL and reset the data. The phone would reboot and all was good! I wonder if something like this would work for voicemail. I have not experienced this problem, just trying to help.

This is true, however....for some reason when I tried to do this, it gave me an error message and I still had to contact Sprint. I guess it depends on the phone you are switching to. So YMMV.

How does Sprint sync your real voicemail box with Visual Voicemail?

Happily running CM7 with one issue:
If I dial my own number (or longpress "1" in the dialer) to access my real voicemail box, I have many "new" messages.
But I have been receiving, listening to, and deleting these same messages using the Sprint Visual Voicemail program installed as per the usual method (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12219741&postcount=2 under "visual voicemail" for the one-sentence version).
Why are the two voicemail "boxes" not in sync?
I'm pretty convinced this is a bug-not-a-feature because it gives two different versions of the "truth" to anyone who uses both methods to check VM (because, say, your bluetooth headset doesn't allow you to hear locally-stored VVM audio files.. but that's another topic..). I'm not even sure what happens when this goes on for a month or two- do callers hear some kind of "mailbox full" announcement? Do the oldest messages just go away once they reach a certain age?
I have returned to a sense-based ROM and tried to "update my profile" and PRL, I have sent a VVM to [email protected], and I have gotten the little "toast" that says I have been provisioned successfully. But no sync. I have rebooted. I have waited overnight. I have turned off wi-fi to force 3G communication with Sprint. I have scoured the internet for these and other recommendations. Still no sync. The only thing I haven't done is called Sprint and asked them to get involved (which of course is a bit of a last resort considering we are talking about a rooted phone here).
So I'm asking for help from a) anyone who has experienced this and solved it and/or b) anyone who can shed some light on how Sprint VVM synchronization works.
Thanks in advance...
PS- I already know I can always "solve" my Sprint VVM issues by switching to Google Voice: I'm sure GV is great, but my question is not about GV. I'm just looking for basic information on the signalling method Sprint uses to synchronize your VVM with the cloud. Thanks!
I've been wondering and experiencing the same exact stuff that you mentioned, any input is appreciated here too!

After reading your post I pressed 1 to go into my voicemail and it said I had 12 messages. Never noticed this issue before (I never actually call for my messages, I just use the app), very strange. Unfortunately I don't know the answer.
Thanks ausch- I should have cited your FAQ as another excellent one-sentence summary of the basic method for getting Sprint VVM to run on CM7. And then of course there's this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=982966 which spells it out a little more explicitly and, after getting a bunch of blog mentions at some point, had quite a bit of traffic for awhile. I originally reported this issue there but got no response after a few days so I just started up a new thread to get some more visibility.
I think you need another apk installed for that part to work.
This one. I think it is what updates your visual voicemail and deletes messages, not positive though.

Lol, yeah when I was typing all that **** up I got lazy and just wrote it up real quick. Probably should have gone a little more in depth.
I installed it too (thank you for the suggestion aimbdd) but it force closes a lot and generally does not seem to fix my issue.
I'm getting plenty of notifications (my VVM "widget" shows the right number of unheard messages and the stock android VM notification up in the status bar shows the right number as well), the version is 5.1.0.34, and everything seems to function pretty well with this one exception.
I see references to Sprint_App_Updater.apk in lots of places (here's an example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7246771&postcount=35 ) but it's not clear to me if the app is actually essential to the VM sync issue I'm talking about.
And one last thing, just a random quote (from http://www.evo4gforum.net/htc-evo-4g-how-to/visual-voicemail-9708/ ) from a person who had the exact *opposite* issue: he prefers using phone-call-based voicemail and wanted his visual voicemails to go away: "I did talk with Sprint and ... I asked them why are the messages that I delete on Sprint VM (#1) still going to VVM and not being deleted. No real answer except for that's the way the VVM app works. He assured me that if I delete a VVM that it will also delete it on Sprint's (#1), but for whatever reason it doesn't work the opposite way. "
This last sentence tells me there is supposed to be at least one-way sync.
I accept that the VVM app holds previously-downloaded audio files and it may not be desired (or even feasible) for Sprint to reach into your phone and delete a static audio file just just because you called into your voicemail and manually erased the original voicemail that spawned it. So maybe we will never have two-way sync.
But that quote above clearly promises that when things are functioning normally the mailboxes *do* sync in the direction I care about: if you delete a message from your phone, a signal goes back to the cloud so that the original is deleted there also.

I just got a voicemail and it was still in Sprint's system after deleting it from the app so I don't think this fixes the problem. Thanks for the suggestion though.
Today's PRL update did not change the behavior.
I might start casting about for answers outside the EVO 4G forum. Seems like it would be a generic Sprint issue that would apply to more than just EVO users..
Well just to close this out, I did find a solution after posting in various other threads until someone came up with the simple suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling.
So the issue that prompted my question is resolved and my voicemail boxes *do* sync.
But I still never did find out *how* they sync.
Seems strange the underlying sync mechanism isn't more widely understood. Guess I'll let it drop for now. Thanks to everyone who chimed in.

Well just to close this out, I did find a solution after posting in various other threads until someone came up with the simple suggestion of uninstalling and reinstalling.
So the issue that prompted my question is resolved and my voicemail boxes *do* sync.
But I still never did find out *how* they sync.

question, how did you uninstall and reinstall this...was it from titanium backup or something similar?
Nevermind, I found the fix/culprit (go sms) and now I'm all good.

[Q] Can send texts but can't receive them

UPDATE: Full details on how I solved this problem can be found here.
I'm on CM6--haven't upgraded yet.
A couple of days ago, I stopped being able to receive text messages. I can send text messages and everyone gets them (confirmed).
I have Google Voice (GVoice) installed on my phone and if someone sends a text to that number, the phone pulls it down and displays it fine. However, if someone sends a text to my Sprint number, no go.
The only odd thing that I can think of that happened a couple of days ago was that I got an international text (from the UK) and I think it's since then that I've not been able to receive any texts.
I tried to uninstall Handcent and used the default Messaging app, but no luck. Anyone have any idea what might be going on?
Just as additional information, I called Sprint and they checked my MEID and said it was wrong and the phone needed to be "refreshed". Is my MEID # different from what they have because it's rooted?
Wait first try installing another rom. Or you could just upgrade to cm7,cm6 is too old. Then when you install another rom try texting again.

Thanks Jadden.
I think I know what the problem might be. More details here. Basically, My MIN on my phone doesn't match what Sprint has for my MSID. Confirmation these need to be the same found here.
I am going to install another ROM first--a stock one, and am following the steps I documented here.
Hey, this has happened to me randomly twice before, same exact situation. Didn't matter what ROM I tried, it just wouldn't work. After a while I found the solution was to clear all data settings/reactivate the phone on Sprint's network. I don't remember the exact steps since I'm on CM7, but on a sense rom, go into EPST, and find the option to clear the data settings. Once you do this, it'll say like reactivating service or something, and it'll be fixed. Let me know if it works or you need more help.
all u have 2 do is (if not on a sense rom):
1. nandroid once in recovery
2. wipe all (3x jes to be sure)
3. flash a SENSE ROM (not AOSP)
4. in settings, update profile, den update PRL
5. nandroid back to ur old ROM
if on sense rom, do JUST step 4
ur MEID will match once u do this... n everythi g will be back 2 normal

Sometimes the solution is super simple. Go to Google Voice settings, under the phones tab, click EDIT on your cell phone, then make sure the e text messages on this phone is clicked. Save. This turned off once on me for unknown reason. Drove me crazy trying to figure out why I couldn't get messages.
You need to update your PRL

For me, I had to make sure "Notifications via text message" was ticked in the Google Voice settings. This took me three different nandroid, PRL updates and reboots to figure this out.
I like using the EVO native messaging app and for some reason this option was randomly unchecked during some upgrade.
Same problem
I'm having the same problem as of a few days ago, and I don't quite understand what you did to fix it?
Any help would make me happy. I've been fighting with this for several days, I'm out of ideas.

SMS, MMS over wifi on Verizon

I was wondering if there was a way to get SMS and MMS to work over wifi with any app other than verizon messages. I've been a big user of that since they incorporated individual sounds for contacts. However, their most recent update has made MMS stop working entirely so I've gone back to Messenger for now. But last night I was at a bar with a friend and for whatever reason, inside the building a VZW signal was impossible. Outside the building it was fine....but inside it just dropped out. Wifi worked fine, but I was unable to send or receive any messages. Hangouts I cant remember if it could handle wifi for sms or not...and hangouts is not playing the correct sounds I select for contacts on my 6p.
i'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who used verizon messages that had mms stop working since that latest update. Of course they won't support the Nexus 6p, so I think we're stuck in a waiting game for now.
If you use Google Voice, you can use Hangouts for calls/sms/mms over WiFi or mobile data.
No.. I don't use Google voice. I've had my number far too long to switch to a Google voice number. I like the stock app.... But having the ability to text over wifi was nice with Verizon messages. I had a nasty exchange with their tech support. They kept telling me the same crap. I had to tell them as a nexus owner I'm not a tech idiot. It's on their end and started with their update. Fix it. Of course they continue to tell me it's my fault some setting isn't enabled when it is.

Just to respond to your google voice question. I had a number for almost 14 years. I ported that number over to Google Voice for 20$ one time fee and forwarded my google voice to my cell phone number.
I've been scouring the web for an old version of Verizon Messages and am coming up short. I'm hoping that by installing an old version, it will fix our issues. I'm going to try contacting the developer.

it is available on apkpure site. You can find many old versions. Just do a quick google search and you should find it.
Search Term: Verizon Messages APK
If I can find my S4 and charge it... I can use apk extractor to grab the old version of my S4 from before my nexus arrived. Also might be on my N7 if that hasn't automatically updated.
Big thanks to chichu_9! Inwas able to get last month's version on apkpure and now mms is working again, over wifi and vzw network. I just can't update the app anymore
Thanks @chichu_9 I got the apk from apk pure and all is working well again. Thanks.
So the Verizon Messages 6.0.2 works over wifi... correct?

yes, that is the version that I rolled back to on my phone and it has been working over wifi. MMS group messages have also been working.
I have 6.02 as well and everything is fine. I received an email from the VZW messages app team and they are aware and "working" on the problem
Adblock plus is blocking mms as of now. Remove it and mms will be back.
I don't have ad block and MMS is still not working on VZW messages. I'm completely stock. It's a problem with the latest update. According to Verizons email they sent me.. "we are aware of the problem and working to correct it"
