[Q] Some tiny questions about your SGS2 - Galaxy S II General

Hiii!
I want to buy the SGS2, looks like a very nice phone to me. Have you guys found any bad thing on your SGS2, I don't care about how little it is, I just want to know it!
Is it a good choice to buy the SGS2, or should I wait for the improved version? I don't want to buy a HTC, since their phones are ugly!
At the moment I got a Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10, and I'm very happy with my phone. The camera is very very nice!
Well, I'm hoping for any reply.
Hugs,
Rachelle

The sound quality is not so great if you compare with SGS+Voodoo or even iphone 4
Despite this fact I think this is the best phone that I have ever used. And I've used a lot of phones.
and no offense but when i used XPERIA X10 i thought its **** . U should definitely go for sgs 2 its 1000 times better than x10.

When you change to 720p or 1080p in video recording the whole picture zooms in and the video will be zoomed in.

that doesn't make the video quality any worse, does it?

As you have an X10 I won't suggest you to update atm cause X10 is still a doable one. Use it for another 6-7 months till next MWC and see what comes out then.
Regards.

Thanks, I think I will wait then. For me the x10 is easily useable, much faster then the iPhone 4 I had, and also much better in every single way.
Also, someone here said something about that the sound quality is very bad, do you mean speaker or in-call or something else?
According to ithehappy's advise, I'm going to wait for 6-7 months ! But reply's are still welcome, because I can make other people happy with it

Are you kidding me? The X10 is one laggy POS, im guessing you havent used it

As far as today goes, the X10 isn't as bad as it used to be compared to how it was last year. The 1.6 and all the bloatware on it killed any potential performance the Snapdragon is supposed to give, and I will have to admit as far as Android phones goes, that was pretty much the worst one I've used.
Fortunately its boot loader is now unlocked and custom ROMs are now being provided, in addition of Sony Ericsson finally releasing Eclair for it. No software updates will make up for its deficiency, which is the lack of multi-touch controls. The hardware is nice; I've gotten many questions and inquiries about mine (I got the white one), but given the experience with it, I can't help but be skeptical about getting the Arc, Play or even the Duo.
I've had pretty much every GSM Android handset that has been released in the U.S., and the Galaxy S II definitely lived up to the hype. I had my Atrix on eBay by the same night that I received the Galaxy.

Uhm, the x10 bootloader is not unlocked, and there were already ROMs. Also 2.3 update is near for the X10.
Uhm, x10 is only laggy because of a FPS cap I read.

they should make the copy paste function easier like IOS
1080p zooms in which is an issue if ur trying to make a video in a place that is small
i have to click noise reduction everytime ( im not sure if it off or on ) i talk on the phone so people on the other line can hear me well ( i hope MIUI cm7 or an app would just make it off/on all the time )
touch sensitivity(required more movement than usual to make it react) which can be fixed ( seen an app that demonstrated it )
everything else ..... PERFECT

Frankly I think the display is a little too small. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this beast.

My apologies for assuming that the boot loader was unlocked out of assumption that it had ROMs for it. I'm rather surprised that SE will continue releasing updates for it since I remember last year that they twitted that Eclair was to be the last update for that handset.
Regardless of that, 2.3 is not going to give it multi-touch and the lag issue I had was with the responsiveness of the system, not menu scrolling lags or game performance. I give every handset two weeks for evaluation, and since day one, I've had issues with the X10 in terms of wake-up, the hanging or freezing I get when opening settings or other applications, and sometimes not responding to initial input and requiring a second or third tap to open or select something.

Truthfully, nothing besides getting a little hot at times. It just can't put up a fight against the Galaxy S II in any category; the Atrix has a higher capacity battery, but the battery life comes up short compared to the Galaxy. With my current usage, the Atrix would have to be on the charger by nightfall, but I'm able to get away without charging the Galaxy until at least noon by the next day.

Having hesitance in buying X10..suggestions pls

after X1...i feel little apprehensive to buy another sony ericsson phone..the way they ditched their customers..i kinda feel betrayed..the phone feels like crap now...outdated OS...laggy interface, finger- unfriendly.
X panels was a joke
- how useful is timescape/mediascape?
now saw the forum..and X10 also has sufficient amount of bugs compared to other Android phones...infact much more than any other high end android phone
it is a cool phone..looks classy..good to show off.
-but does it perform decently as a phone?...will i have problems making phone calls & texting?
-and will rooting come on X10? ...coz i want a phone i can customize later..and not a phone which becomes dinosaur like X1

I believe you answered your own question
I'll be honest,
I was fortunate enough to have an HTC Desire for 2 weeks before I got the X10...
I sold the desire because I was under the impression that the only things I didn't like about the X10 were to do with Android 2.1 which would be sorted in the update.
After playing with the X10 I'm starting to miss the Desire - the camera seemed to be better with crisper images (surprising?! YEP!!) but again, I'm hoping this will all change with updates, so I'm kind of relying on SE to sort all this out with updates.
I do like the X10, don't get me wrong, BUT I think I will like it even more assuming that I'm right that the updates will sort out the issues.
You are right to be apprehensive. I jumped on this a soon as it was released in the UK. Even though their was a lot of controversy about the specs I bought this.
I also knew the Desire was about to be released to at around the same time.

MediaScape is very pretty indeed but i still find myself using the stock music app from time to time for the best functionality.
With Mediascape I have noticed that it does take a few button presses to get to where you want to go. This is down to both the menu structure and the fact on my current firmware the app doesn't always respond to my key presses. I have also found that the pics that i have tagged regularly revert back to their untagged state. The ability to create playlists using Mscape on the device is also lacking.
I tried setting Timescape as my homescreen but it suffered from serious slow down on launch. The app draw was also affected so I reverted back to the stock android's 3 homescreens and the phone was lightening quick again.

In short NO. as phone it is hit a miss. The In-Call Volume is far too quiet and and turned up to max volume on 1.6 you get background interference.
In addition to this there are no initiate call\ end call hard keys sometime feels like there too many options/button presses to make and receive calls.
It works but I feel that it's not as intuative as HTC's own design.
Texting.. Again out of the box texting can be quite a task as the SE keyboard doesnt always recognise key presses. However this can be narrowed down to specific keys when it happens.
You can overcome this though by installing the HTC keyboard or by using Better keyboard from the market.
One more thing to note with text is that TimeScape offers full conversation history with images too and it all looks very tidy. However when you want to respond to message you are taken into what looks like different app that looks less impressive. On the plus side the sms app works in landscape.
On the Plus side, the screen is glorious, browsing is a joy, the OS although not 2.1 is still a joy to use (Comparing to my old Hero on 1.5).
Google maps with Nav and the Camera are also great.
I can't say im completely satisfied with the X10 and on occasion I have been tempted to swap for a Desire. However I have this foolish hope that SE will come good and make this device what it was designed to be. I'm sure you will have heard about the planned updates.

I think Root will come eventually but at the moment this device isn't as popular as other android handsets because of SE's past record. It's also evident that alot of people are tempted by the x10, but are not sure wether to make the commitment.
HTC is the safe choice (tried and tested) and I thats why they get root first.
don't do my mistake x10 is shi*ty htc rules ,i regretdd leaving my hd2 ,i will threw the x10 into garbage and return my hd2 to be my main device ,or buy a desire . the x10 feels to be a prerelease prototype device ,very un usable

Right... Very unusable and you threw it in the garbage and then returned to WinMo..
Something tells me theres a fair bit of bull**** floating around.
Infact, coming from the HD2 to the X10, the HD2 is much more unusable than the X10. The X10 is FAR FAR more responsive than any WinMo device

I agree, I came from HD2 to Desire ( for 3 weeks), and now to X10
Desire was a great phone , but lacked that wow factor, was a little bit too boring in design ( personal choice of course)
Reason I want back to the X10 was the screen size, I found the Desire too small.
When we get 2.1 or 2.2 on this phone, it will be the best around, so we need to pray for root as soon as possible. But as usual, in 3 months, there will be something newer out there.
I want to tell you my story : I had the same experience with SE X1 so I was looking for another choice, first thing I decided NO MORE WM , X1 was my first and last windows mobile . I read about Android but never try, I was looking on the net, reading reviews and previews , I found out that the Desire would be the best, but its design was boring not like the fascinating X10.
X10 is the first SE Android experience because of that there might be some bugs, but now after one month using it I can tell you two words GO AHEAD .... that exactly the device which I was looking for, changing from X1 to X10 is like from hell to heaven .
I think a lot of great things will come soon : X10 will be rooted then it will get Android 2.1 (in Q4 2010)
P.S: as an Arabic user I am suffering that the device doesn't support my language, but it's still my favorite

No, that's not true. There's always an over representation of people who have problems on forums! And to tell you the truth, I have no problems at all with my phone. Bug free and lightning fast with the latest update. Mind you that I never use Timescape or Mediascape, but that's me! And the Desire has bugs too.
Hmmm didnt you started a similar thread before?
If you i had given you my opinion there. In short x10 is not a bad phone. If your expectation is high then you're likey to get dissapointed. Desire is a better option. But not the best looking phone imo.
And dont let timescape and medisca
pe affect your decision they are hardly useful
You are right. We cannot habe arabic without rooting so. It is one of biggest problems I had faced

Why is the Desire a better option? Because it has Android 2.1? Or is it because it displays gray colors as pink? Or maybe because it is unusable in the sun? Or maybe its the poor reception it receives or crappy pictures it takes? The desire has plenty of negatives that people are writing about all over the place, but it's still a GREAT phone. For my money I prefer the X10, some people will prefer the Desire, and that's fine, but my expectations were extremely high with the X10 and it has met every one of them, it's a fantastic phone.

Agreed, i had my x10 for a day and its been excellent.
I've had a few niggles with the phone, but nothing major.. I love it, such a great bit of kit.. fast, responsive, clear picture, generally very good ui.. have persevered with Mediascape and quite like it now.. just occasionally use the default mail app to make playlist (which irritatingly can't do in mediascape.. )
managing to get a full day out of the battery now too, and that's with quite a bit of use..
so.. onto OS/ firmware - They've already released a couple of minor build changes.. and another bigger one coming out in the next week or so.. then Android 2.1 (probably not 2.2 or later) in Q4 this year.. I'm not bothered about MT, but then I'm not a big gamer.... all things considered though. A1.6 is pretty damned good anyway.. (my missus has a HTC legend which is great.. but I still prefer my X10..!!
I too came from an X1 to an X10, and couldn't be happier. Even with the X1 modded with an HTC interface, this phone is so much more enjoyable to use. Such a smooth and responsive user experience compared to that one.
My friend has a Desire btw, and on the same network, on the same physical spot, my X10 has better signal reception and higher download speeds. Plus, for some reason the X10 both starts and shuts down WAY faster. So the Desire isn't all that much more desireable in my experience.

Sorry for being blunt, i was actually reading this thread on the phone and couldnt type long.
Our hesitating friend here is looking for something that he/she can show off. No doubt both phones are good looking physically and GUI wise. And the X10 suit my taste more.
However you have to admit the animation on the phone is just questionable. There are noticeable minor lags. The most obvious is when you hold your thumb on the home screen to change wallpapers, the window jerks open. Such a simple animation and yet it cant be done nicely on a 1ghz cpu. Hence I dare to say the desire does a better job at this. The animations are so fluid its almost on par with the iphone. You might say i'm being picky, i admit that, thats prob because my expectation was even more higher than yours.
Look nocturnal, both phones have good and bad points, it all depends on what features both phones offer matter to you most, and what are the bad points you can ignore. I'm a pessimist, I like my things by accepting their cons. Im also a X1 user as I mentioned in your earlier thread. Upgrading from that piece of junk to X10 is definitely a huge leap. I maybe complaining about the smallest details i can find on X10, but that does not mean Im not happy with the phone. I know iphone is the only phone(according to my experience) that can do the most fluid GUI, (HTC second) but can i live with no-multitasking, apple being a control freak etc etc? No
I'd give X10 a 8/10, X1 a 2/10.
Pass
I have only purchased SE phones for the past seven years. My last three were the p900a, p910i, and currently I own the x1i. Prior to SE I only purchased Motorola. When the X10 came out I decided to purchase but also wanted to wait to see want x10 owners were saying. I have been waiting, and waiting, and waiting for enough positives to go ahead a take the x10 plunge. I have learned the hard way that SE gets great hardware out there and is slow to get the software side up and running appropriately, but that is not a deal breaker by itself.
After waiting for several issues to be resolved before purchasing and reading the volume of issues, I have finally decided to give the x10 a pass all together. No, I will wait for the issues facing the x10 to be worked out in the next SE. Like maybe the GX1! That will be sweet when/if it arrives to market.
The reason I have decided to wait: Unlike the p900, p910, and x1, the x10's issues are too involved with the reasons I would buy this ppc.
1) I prefer a hard keyboard and the with the issues facing the on-screen keyboard, the rest of the phone would really have to be superstar to over come this issue for me. Not a deal breaker by itself.
2) Timescape lags, contact photo not clean, issues with google email and facebook functionality, plus doesn't sync'n well and, lack of thoughtfulness with the controls.
3) Battery life is not optimised for the X10's performance. Not a deal breaker
4) Flash 10.1 not released yet and it is not yet known what issues will arise with working on the X10. Current flash players isn't really a proper flash player and video hangs at 50% complete. Issue for me
5) Running 1.6 and given SE track record the phone will get one up date to possibly the 2.1 in NOVEMBER. And, after that x10 owners will be on their own. Plus spring will be the launch of SE's next product. For me this is the biggest issue.
6) Suspicious that the screen protector that is included and shipped attached is really covering up a more serious issue with the actual screen itself. I do not see this as SE being thoughtful. Other wise why not just put it in the box and let the user decide? Some markets even got two screen protectors. One attached and second one to attach at a later time. It smells an awful lot like a screen manufacturing problem to me. Time will tell. But still an issue for me.
These are just a few off the top of my head. None are really deal breakers by themselves, and I know some will be addressed in June with an update and the others will be fixed in November. But why so long? Way too long if SE expects to keep me as a continued long term customers who always buys their flagship products. I also know that some will never be fixed. I would rather wait for the X20 with it's improvements and fixes to the issues facing the X10. Because I know there will not be enough changes to justify trading up from the X10 to the X20 should I buy now. I made that mistake with jumping from the p900 to the p910.
Here is what I would like to see SE and Google under the same roof. This would truly be an international success story. Ericsson's connectivity, Sony's ground breaking portable hardware, Googles OS, and purchase a forth company (purely software) to bring the apps into the 21st century. SE needs to buy a major software developer right now. SE's issues are always related to software and it that take too frick'n long to fix, if they get fixed at all. And, if you decide to get the fix yourself you void your warranty and can't get auto updates any more. Insane!
So unless something seriously ground breaking happens with this X10 I will hold on to my X1 a bit longer.

you said it all
fm1776, none of those are issues to me especially no. 2 which I completely disagree with, no. 3 is also not the case with my phone, and the Android 1.6 being upgraded late this year ignores the fact that SE allows you to do the same and more that any Nexus 2.1 phone can do. Certainly a hard keyboard, if that is what you require, makes the x10 not the right phone for you. I am kind of shocked that you had the x1 but have passed on the x10 though, it is night and day between these phones, a lightyear leap, really.
the X10 reminds me a lot of the PS3. when the PS3 came out, it was dissed left and right. fans lost faith.
look what happened now? PS3 is killing it. and it too had to get firmware updates. and after some major updates, it was rockin'
i feel almost the same about the X10 as i did when i purchased a PS3 and my friends clowned me for it. now, it's not a laughing matter.
X10 IS getting 2.1 and that is a fact (for now) and i think if SE gives us what we want, it will be a win-win sooner or later.
so far the phone is a let down for me personally.
i don't hate it. patience and time will tell about how i feel about the phone when it's all said and done.
but as a phone, it doesn't do the 'phone' particularly well at this stage. low call volumes, along with a vibration that you can't really feel and a battery life that you can not really depend on is something really bugs me.

If you had a choice would you buy the X10 again?

This is not a thread to bash or degrade the X10 at all in any way. I really like my X10 it's a great phone, I enjoy using it. Problem is my wife does as well.
So I gave her the phone because she need a good camera and something to watch movies etc with while on vacation.
So now I'm back with my rooted/hacked Magic which I like but not so much after using the X10. I was going to just buy another but wanted to be sure first, so to my question.
Anyone that has tried a different phone and moved to a X10 or has dropped the X10 for a different phone, whats the closest competitor or upgrade?
It has to be usable on Rogers 3g and can't be an Iphone, I will never own an apple product so that shouldn't be a debate.
Thanks for any feedback just want some options, maybe I already have the best one out there.
I would buy it again, I've even turned down an offer to trade mine in for a Desire. Only way I'd switch would be if there was a bigger Snapdragon version of the Legend available.

X10 all the way
I would buy it again too. I just love the design, the camera, Mediascape and the screen. However I would be really tempted between the X10 and Galaxy S. The Galaxy S has an even better screen then our X10. However the Galaxy sucks design wise, I mean, it's just like an iFart 3G(S), even the menu looks the same. The Galaxy S feels a lot faster though. It just flies through all the different menus and screens.
So if you like me love the design, camera and Mediascape of the X10 , then buy it again. Otherwise I would take a good look at the Galaxy S.
X10 it is a wonderful phone, but this delay about android 2.1 and froyo annoys me...
I was looking through the specs on the Galaxy-S. Actually thought it would be a pretty nice phone till I actually saw it. And the fact it has a AMOLED screen, they seem blurry to me and way over saturated.
How does the Nexus compare, can't seem to see anything else that compares to the X10.
I will only exchange my X10 for a Droid X or dell Streak.
Droid X becuase it has similar specs (camera and bigger screen) and good firmware support. Dell Streak for the screen size and possibly 2.2 very soon.
But love my X10 for its camera, screen, Mediascape, Dialler, TrackID and lack of firmware update. You just cant beat that.

Thanks yes that was the other one I was thinking about just couldn't remember. The Droid X looks very nice, not big on the hardware keyboard but the rest of the specs look wicked and the looks itself I don't mind king of industrial. But I don't see that they have one for Rogers 3G bands (same as AT&T) It would be right on the top of my list if they have one that will work Rogers. Streak it very nice but getting into tablet size IMO.
I would buy it again.
I can overlook the 2.1 delay and no 2.2 in the near future.
I'm enjoying my first taste of Android.
The media capabilities are nice, video & audio are clear and smooth.
The processor is extremely quick.
I like the large screen.
I don't need a hardware keyboard.
It is less practical than winmo, but more entertainment oriented.
The camera is excellent.
I think you should wait a couple weeks and see what happens with flashing CM6 on the X10, if things go well then I'd go for another one for sure, otherwise choose something else.
Having said that, if you can't wait an additional few months lol, buy the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S Captivate...geeze mouthful or HTC Desire (which Telus will have in stock real soon and I think will work on Rogers 3G??) still imho one of, if not THE best phones on the market. And come October/November there will be even more great choices on the market...patience is a virtue

Exactly the same sentiments as me. I just wanted an android phone and my carrier only offered X10 at a discounted rate. But I am extremely pleased. Plus it makes my blackberry friends jealous since they try to talk crap about my phone to make themselves feel better.
I would yes, as it's a beautiful piece of equipment, and will happily sit out the wait for 2.1, and who knows, maybe sometime later the devs on here will get 2.2 on it.
4 months ago... yes
today no... i would wait for September or even Christmas.
Yes.....after de-applefying myself from my old Iphone, i love this new bit of Kit. Sure ths OS isnt current and the battery is a little needy. But the hardware/software relationship is great and the device its self is fantastic.
I love my X10
Rooted already, tethering done, since root my batter goes x2 time , great thanks to xda people.
Screen is so great.
Well a lot of things, maybe the Froyo not support is the only thing I miss here, but I'm patient about it
As far as I'm concerned its the best android phone out there, I've tried the nexus one, milestone and the HTC legend and the x10 was the best when it came to reception and battery life. I just wish it came with 2.1 at the very least. I'm on my 3rd x10 btw, I keep going back to it
Thanks for all the opinions guys. Yeah I'm a fan since I bought it that's why it's hard to figure if I want another one or try out the latest and greatest.
Not new to Android I've had a Magic since the day they came to Canada I love to OS no selling me on that. Battery is a none issue I charge every night regardless, had to do it with my Magic as well. (heavy user)
So far I think the only one that looks to be able to grab my attention from the X10 would be the Droid X if I can find one that uses Rogers 3G bands.

I can't seem to find anything up and coming that would make me wait. Any info on what you think would be worth the wait. I'm not in a huge hurry, but now that I've used the X10 it's hard to use the little Magic again.
I just did as I moved from T-mobile to AT&T. Had X10i in white for a long while now and then purchase X10a in Black. I didn't like the Black X10 as much as the white one. So, purchased a White X10a. Yesterday, I went to AT&T store and played with Samsung Captivate and have to tell you I like my X10a even more. SE came up with a design that can't be beaten for a long while. I wonder how much better can SE do with their X10 upgrade.
Some things they can do to make X10 upgrade even more sexy:
1. Little sleeker or keep same size but fit in bigger and better battery.
2. Sony Ericsson logo on top or Xperia logo at bottom to act like Notification light (battery drainer?)
3. 4 buttons
4. A Glossy Premium Carbon metal body (like Z series Vaio) for the front side.
absolutely i never buy sonyericsson device one more time!
i have just not really happy with T68 (some years ago..) and p900i.
i try SE X10 for the top class hw feature, but i have to admit that this "phone" is not very usefull for me.
battery life is a huge problem.
the touchscreen some time is not responding fine.
the sound quality and volume level is not sufficient (i have Nokia N95-1, is tremendous louder compared to x10 !!) , that's absolutely NOT acceptable from a brand wich contain the word "sony" on his brandname.
plus, the lag of the official software development on this phone.
if this is the top-class device from SE, it must deserve a top-class development , i think
sorry for too many words, but i'm really disappointed with this phone.
I Would yes,
I love the phone , i love the design , x10 feels like a classy phone with very elegant design.
I am very satisfied with the latest updates , my battery life holds more than enough.
And i love the freaking screen !!!
I cant wait to run 2.1

X10 vs desire vs galaxy s

Hello guys I wana knkw which is better . Cuz when I post on desire forum x10 vs desire they all were x10 sux and stuff and and I also post x10 vs.vibrant they said the vibrant is better im trying to collect some info cuz im buying eithrr desire or galaxy s on monday orr should I keep the x10 and wait for 2.1 cuz I dont like the 1.6 and its been almost forever still no 2.1 on x10 I wonder if 2.1 will be available how nice x10 will be I just cant imagine it . So plz help me guys n wht u think and also would 2.1 would it.bring camera flash?
First of all 2.1 isn't going bring camera flash.. that's hardware related, and second why did you buy x10, when you knew it had 1.6 on it?
Flash:
Download Vignette from the market.
X10 vs Galaxy:
My mate bight a galaxy S two weeks ago and is already sending it in for replacement.
1.6 vs 2.1:
If you can't wait a few more weeks, then I highly doubt you'll be keeping either of those phones because of the compulsive need to always upgrade. Kinda defeats the purpose, really.

HTC fan, he bought the X10 probably because the Desire and the Galaxy S were announced for Canada only recently.
If you can get the Galaxy S for only slightly more than the X10, then I recommend it even though I'm an X10 owner and fan. The Hummingbird CPU, extra RAM, 8Gb onboard ROM, S-AMOLED screen, 2.1 (with 2.2 coming in September) make it superior to the X10. Sorry, but that's the truth.
As for the Desire, I would stay with the X10.
P.S. before I get flamed, I have no intention of moving to the Galaxy S.
^ 100% Agree.
Yea when 2.1 comes to the X10 all our problems will be over. I wont even have to work anymore probably. It will be such an amazing thing that if I were to accidentally drop my phone from 40 Ft. it will bounce right back into my pocket (unharmed). I am so tired of ppl *****ing about 1.6 vs 2.1/2.2. Get the FU** over it already. There are so many more things in the world to be concerned with. Just my opinion though.
@htc fan89 i bought my x10 3 months ago i didnt had knowledge of android or what 1.6 was. i can wait 3 weeks or whatever but is it official that its coming this month or its just people saying it .
I'm just tried of people crying for 2.1...that's all

Nicely put
We're always going to have the need to upgrade to the latest android smartphone just to get the full potential. It's a never ending cycle, and unfortunately I'm a victim. I think I will stick with the Xperia X10 since I've gone through so much with it and although it is my 5th Android phone, I've learned most about Android capabilities from the X10. It's a good phone, I'm sure in a few months something awesome will come in Canada and we all going to want it. I've tried selling my phone but the resell value is just ridiculous. I'll be sticking with the X10, even though I love Super AMOLED. I want to be around when the bootloader gets cracked.
What is the resale value of X10?
I'm not going to do it anyway ... i'm just curious.
My next will be one of those dual core smartphones which most likely will be launched next summer
And if we don't get dualcore, at least we will have 1.5Ghz
Resale is about $300 cdn if that. Theres tonnes of them up on kijiji and craigslist.

Not entirely sure about that. First thing is that it would drain the battery a lot more. Secondly it's not really needed for the most part.
We already have DSPs and dedicated chips that handles much of the heavy lifting like sound, video, graphics etc. Unless you're doing _heavy_ multitasking on your phone the performance increase would be minimal. And given that Android is pretty good at allocating resources you'd probably be better off with more RAM in the future rather than a new CPU.

I'm interested in the deverlopment as well. I think we're going to see a period of increased power, much like the Ghz wars of the past ten years. After that we're probably going to see more effort being put into better battery-life and increased portability. Much like Laptops are becoming the norm for computers I think Smartphones (or rather their descendants) are going to replace Laptops as the daily computing platform.
A major part of todays interweb users could probably switch from using computers to smartphones without losing any functionality. Just attach a larger screen and a bluetooth keyboard and you can Facebook, mail, surf the web, watch youtube, play casual games and enjoy media.

fk the x10 i should have waitied for something better. i just got a decent deal at the time.
For all the top end android phones this just doesnt come close. The ram is below spec for v 3. and no dam multi touch... I thought my T28 was my last SE and I gave them i more chance with this. If i had the choice again i would have got the desire no doubt about it....

Hang on, below spec for version 3? You're whining over a recommendation, not requirement, for an OS update that will come out six months after the device was released? Sheesh, some people really need to learn how to have realistic expectations.
fair enough of the v 3 "requirement" RAM is still well below the others anyway ... what really is so good about this phone? timescape... not a chance... mediascape umm.... screen, a little bigger but not a OLED or anything super.... in call volume is terrible.... outdated software and **** support.
X10 isnt top and thats all there is to it! however... coming from 6.5win this still kicks its ass.

The support being **** isn't really fair, we've had more than one update every month that fixes a lot of issues so the support isn't bad. The outdated software has a point but the OS shipped with the phone is being updated and we're going to see a new OS in a matter of weeks.
OLED? I can go on for pages about it but I'll just mention two points. Sunlight and bad resolution.
It's totally crap in sunlight, even more so than any other screen I've experienced. I've tried to use the Desire in sunlight but even max brightness and shading it with my hand didn't help.
The resolution is crap. Period. Not only does it have a effective lower resolution when you use it compared to counting the actual pixels but it also makes text and high contrast graphics really blurry. If you have an oled display nearby I invite you to look closely at black text on white background on both it and a tft display and compare them. Even though the difference is smaller when look at from a distance many have complained that the difference, even though hard to notice from a distance, gives them headaches.
For me brighter colours don't make up for crap resolution. I'll gladly take fewer colors if it means that I can read on it and use it outdoors.

[HELP] Desire HD or SGS i9000

GUYS I am really desperate I want to buy a new phone on Monday and I am totally lost as to what I should get. I finally figured out two phones I would like to get. Either the DHD or the SGS. They both have there ups and downs, and its really really really hard to pick one lol... u cant imagine how hard it is. Could you perhaps give me some advice as to what I should buy please? I would really appreciate it !!!!
If you search the forum you'll see there is already a thread for this.
I want my own
Do you mean sgh i9000 I can't find a phone called sgs i9000
I mean Samsung galaxy s i9000 aka SGS
I think you should definitely go for the DHD.. more ups than downs better quality (metal) SGS is plastic and simply looks like a old Iphone... blah bla... HTC rocks!
period!
Yep but it's full of bugs and badly made (battery and sim cover) upside however is HTC release fixes quicker and android upgrades quicker than most.
Problems at present are the laggyness, sim and battery cover issues, crashes on market, not so good camera, reboots occasdionally

Galaxy S for form factor, display Super Amoled best ever seen, because 10 millions people have it now and more and more will have later and will have the best support ever (XDA rulez, and if you see now there are some ROM which make it incredible fast and no lagg or crash, even better than Nexus One)
Than you can wait for Nexus Two
You will spend less to have the best in market now.
Why cant people just look in the freaking forum or use the search bar, theres already a thread about this..
Don't have all those problems no lagging no occasionally reboots.. crashes on market are true but not anymore now I can download and install all apps want fluently..
The sim cover is indeed a little bit of poor quality but I use a silicone case which compensate it.
truly, the design of the sim cover is good as it allows quick access to your SD and sim without having to remove the battery.
And about the battery... if you use your phone correct then there is no need to remove the battery.
Camera is perfect for stills in all conditions (yes also in the dark, due the dual-LED flash) Recording mode is good in good conditions but in the dark you can record while the dual-LED flash light is still on.. the quality isn't that perfect but it is good for me...

11 Nov Gingerbread release or the Nexus S release? But if it was the nexus S release then why would they bother making 2 events 3 days apart wouldn't it be more logical to announce everything on one day?
I had to make this choice a couple of weeks ago and went for the HD, not regretting it at all.
I'm not noticing any of the 'downsides' mentioned here (slowdowns, reboots etc).
True the battery and sim covers are fiddly and spoil the initial unboxing experience as you need to open them both to get your device working, but once you've got them back on (which there's a knack to) you need never touch them again and the rest of the phones build quality is excellent, the SGS felt very plastic to me when I tried it out.
Put it this way, my Steve Jobs worshiping flatmate said it's as good as his iPhone 4 which is a BIG admission from him... almost had a tear in his eye as he said it
I sold my SGS for DHD
I sold my SGS and got the DHD.
Now I wonder It wasnt really necessary. Screen on Galaxy S is really awesome.
DHD's screen is good. very crisp text but not as good as Super Amoled.
Speakers on Galaxy S is nice on the other hand speakars are just pure pathetic on DHD. I cant hear a while playing youtube videos. You have to uses the headphone.
I think problem with the camera on DHD is software issue. Needs upgrading. To be honest 5 MP SGS takes better picture than DHD in a well lit environment.
To make things clear. Issues with DHD.
1. Awful speakers
2.Bad camera software (hope its not hardware)
3. Battery and sim lid could have been better but ok for me.
4. Flash videos are laggy. ( Was better on SGS after the last Froyo update)
Now things to consider to get DHD-
1.Living on the fast lane (lol 1600+ score on quadrant)
2. big screen (black level not as good as SGS)
3. Feels solid than SGS. Good build except as mentioned above.
3. HTC sense.com experience. ( really good)
4.More frequent update than Samsung.
So cant think of anything for the time being
Also had to make this choice.
I simply held both phones in either hand, the DHD felt like it was worth something, the SGS felt like it was worth £140 + £10 top up on PAYG.
The SGS is a brilliant phone, but its light, plastic and feels cheaply made - it doesn't have that premium feel you want your nice new expensive phone to have
And the DHD screens a monster, all my iPhone 4 friends love playing Angry Birds on the mammoth screen.
I guess it's settled then... Unless Samsung comes out with the Nexus S in the near future I will be getting the DHD. Thank you guys for helping me !!!
Just get an iphone 4 best phone ever desire hd and galaxy s are terrible ;D

On the whole, is the Arc worth it? Opinions...

I am looking to upgrade my phone this week, going from a Sony Ericsson W995, and I am looking into getting the Arc. I have been set on it for weeks, but just read on the SE forums a few threads about the phone just randomly shutting off and not doing what it is meant to do.
I just wondered if people would recommend it or not, and if these posts are true or not?
Obviously every phone is different so some ones would reboot and some wouldn't. Mine doesn't everything works for me perfectly, the only thing thats bugging me is that development isnt doing too good, in not complaining cause I know it will come eventually cause the phone hasn't been out that long. I would go for tho phone 100% I cant find anything wrong with it so and ice had it for over a week now
Hope this helps u

Mine is up for 550 hours without reboot.
It speaks for itself.
Had mine since Mar 31st - and I love it.. had the X10 before and this is 100000000000000000000000000000000x better than that was!.. Had no real big problems with it.. only thing that people seem to consistently have issues with is a bug in the HD video recording which is causing the voice and images to go out of sync.. I'm expecting that they'll fix this in the next firmware release in June(ish)
Well, you are @ arc forum. most people like their phone per details they were looking for. On the other hand, you have to sort out your important facts which you are expecting from your next phone(which varies from one person to another).
Problems you have listed don't appear for everyone, whether I have been lucky with phone or not, I have never encountered issues like that with any of my SE phones.
Your best bet is to go to store and compare list of phones that you are interested side by side and see what makes you happy. but as far as me being an arc owner, I should say that satisfies my needs and I have not yet had any issue with it as everything is solid and moving forward.
I have to say, this phone is exactly what everyone requested from SE to make. Update hardware, software + get rid of all the SCAPES(which is sort of optional now and not integrated anymore) I just love this + possibility to have unlocked bootloader on certain models. What else can you ask?
just my 7 cents

And huge battery drain from stock camera app.
For 720p recording you can give up image stabilization feature for well-synced audio. For camera you have yo use 3rd party camera app like vignette.
I think this says it all - the Arc is the best single-core handset in the world.
That isn't to say that the Arc is without it's foibles; there are a few things could be better and it's a shame it lacks certain features like a front-facing camera or NFC but the pros outweigh the cons.
It's all down to personal needs though, as well as what sort of deal you can get.
If you can get, say, the Galaxy S2 on the same contract/deal as the Arc, there's really no contest.
Im also very interested in this i own a x10 and have some questions.im thinkin bout it but just dont think is worth getting . The x10 is unbrickable. Its getting custom kernels that are undoin SE's crap. Plus arc doesnt have any custom roms yet And i like the size and desighn of my x10 . And tthe x10 has a pretty strong xda community

Not sure, not that I'm aware of.
Yes.
Exmor R backlit-CMOS sensor - same sort of tech Sony use in their proper digital cameras. There are threads in the section with pictures taken by Arcs.
Battery life isn't great but on a par with other similarly-specced handsets I'd say
To be honest, you could've answered the bit about the colours and the type of camera by just looking up the specs.

You will definitely be very very happy with Arc. There could be something better depending on your needs but you can't go wrong with Arc and I think Arc is currently the best looking phone for my taste and I think it almost feels as good as W995 ;-)

It's all down to personal needs though, as well as what sort of deal you can get.
If you can get, say, the Galaxy S2 on the same contract/deal as the Arc, there's really no contest.

Why? Because its dual core? That means absolutely nothing! Dual core is not even needed these days. Galaxy S was an over hype phone imo, ditched it in about a week to get back my X10, and the Galaxy S2 will be the continuation of Samsungs over hyped nonsense.

You just claimed the X10 was better than the Galaxy S, I'm not even going to begin to waste my time arguing with you.

I simply stated the galaxy s didnt do a damn thing better or faster than what the x10 already did. Regardless of its specs vs the X10....it was over hyped.
*edit* sorry, the galaxy s video recording destroys the X10.

Yes, my mistake - you claimed they were basically equal which is still extremely questionable.
I'm not a Samsung person, I think TouchWiz is a horrific, iPhone-y, designed for and by 5-year-olds joke of a UI. And I think the Galaxy S is a cheap plastic PoS handset.
But it blows the X10 out the water every single day of the week - better screen, better CPU, more RAM, much more internal memory, better stills and video camera in my experience, better software support/upgrades (which is saying something given how poor Samsung are at that).
The Galaxy S2 is simply the best handset in the world right now, not only on paper but every review/hands-on with it says the same thing.
It's not just the dual-core CPU, though as time goes on that will definitely be a huge advantage over the likes of the Arc; double the RAM, a better screen (ok, a little less clear-cut than the difference between the Galaxy S and the X10 but it probably still edges it based on little things like viewing angles), significantly more internal memory, larger battery, better video camera - it's even thinner than the Arc!
So no, it's not just because it's a dual-core CPU (though that alone would be reason enough to choose it if the two were the same price - if you think it's not a huge advantage, you're short-sighted or lying to yourself), there's a litany of other advantages.
I'm not saying the Arc is a bad phone, it has genuinely wowed me and I really didn't expect it to but there's no point kidding ourselves that it's living on borrowed time before it's left behind.

Well, it's an advantage, but I'm a bit conservative when it comes to say huge advantage. Benchmark is great; But, it's an intensive number-crunching process most of the time. IMO, that deviates what I (and probably most of the users) use my smartphone for. I don't use my smartphones to calculate Pi, audio/video editing, etc.
I think dual-core will be shafted by quad-core even before the mass-adoption of the technology by the app developers.
I'm more excited on when GPU acceleration gonna be implemented in our homescreen.

That's the one good thing Samsung have done with TouchWiz (apparently).
Hi
I shall make an amendment to the agreement with my mobile op. and I am wondering whether SE Xperia Arc is a good choice. I have always use Nokia phones and I thought to buy Nokia N8, but I when I saw Arc I've changed my mind. Arc design and mutlimedia possibilities are great, but when I read about battery draining, lags, vid/audio sync problems I am not happy about it.
I am wondering if SE will fix this problem soon? Are these problems only software or maybe it is hardware failure? Do you think it will be repaired soon? When the next software update is expected?
Please help me to make a good choice.
Thanks a lot
hi.. battery drain is seemingly caused by a couple of software issues.. camera and google maps.. both of which should be fixed/ fixable.
lags - not seen many/any reports of lag.
video/audio sync - short term fix is either to use fwvga or try switching image stabilisation off. long term SE should be fixing that.
next update from SE expected in the next couple of months..
Sent from The Arc!
Thanks
I have only a liitle knowledge of Andoid system so tell me If I root my phone is it possible to remove google maps and camera soft? Will it help? Or maybe this is possible without rooting the phone?
