From my reading it seems Windows Phone 7 doesn't have any support for LED notifications. This adds to the already huge population of iPhone users that are used to not having it either. It really surprises me that these platforms choose to leave this feature out, because to me it's invaluable. I use it throughout the day to see if I need to turn my phone on after returning to my desk (at home or work), and not having it requires manual checks to see if I've missed anything. Why should I have to bother with that? So I'm curious if other Android users find it just as valuable, and if you're just as dumbfounded why these other platforms don't have it.
I love it, but hate how it always stays lit when charging on my nightstand.
Can't live without it for notifications. Wish it was multi colored like the Droid as well.

I love my led notifications. Especially using the wimax leds so I can tell when I have a text while the phone is charging.

+1 here the wimax leds are pretty cool. Also we get the short end of the stick compared to the blackberry leds. They have stock 7 color leds.

Not sure if they have the rooted only version posted, but it's a start.
+1 for Wimax notifier, works great when you're charging and get a notification

I completely agree. The LEDs on Blackberrys are amazing. I cannot fathom why these other manufacturers don't put more effort into LED notifications.
Led notifications are great, I liked the wimax notifier but it force closed a lot on me so I uninstalled it.

Yeah, nothing's is as good as a BlackBerry but what the EVO has isn't bad, definitely better than nothing. It's just with two major consumer-oriented platforms leaving it out (inexplicably), I hope Android manufacturers don't eventually do away with it.
This is a feature I have always liked on all of my phones.
Has anyone seen if either 1 of these apps pulls ahead of the other? Really just looking to see which is the best 1 overall between the 2 since I'm picking up my Nexus in a few.
Light flow is newer but doesn't provide any advantage over Tb alert in the free versions, if only it added support for more 3rd party apps like alarms I would understand...but no!

But isn't Lightflow the only APp for Trackball settings which doesn't need root? I use LightFlow on my Stock N1 and is works perfectly.

Lots of apps have Trackball settings for their own notifications. So you can achieve the same sort of thing without a dedicated Trackball settings app and without rooting. ie Chomp/Hancent for SMS, Gmail alert, Skype etc etc.
Yes, but you cannot define the color in most apps. So having one general app to define everything including color and notification interval is very convenient.

I like choosing color as well as sound notification in ONE PLACE. With TB Alert, you can only pick a color. If you test, it shows the light only. With Light Flow, you have ability to hear a sound file as well as see the color picked light when testing the notification. It's just a bit more convemient to me to have this all in one place.
Doc you amaze me
Don't tell me you tried the hundred thousands apps in the market too apart all the roms that were released on N1?
You should write a book ''All you need to know about a nexus one rooted''
I'm rooted but since it is the stock rom (which is odexed) I cannot run trackball alert, thus I went with light flow.
i use SMS Popup. It's free and doesn't require root. It's specifically for messaging notifications but allows you to set your trackball color and you can specify different colors for different contacts.
I've used both, but staying with Light Flow lite on my current rom. I like all the color & app options as well as the Developer's frequent updates/support.

That's funny
I really was a confirmed iPhone type. All I really was using for the last three years. I knew nada about Android. I basically dove in head first when I decided to go for the N1. Saw it at CES here in Las Vegas and immediately went home and ordered it. Haven't looked back since and nothing out there is good enough to replace it....yet. I figure about Christmas time when Quad Core Honeycomb Tegra stuff becomes passe, it will be time to upgrade. Of course it helps having a son who works for NVIDEA looking out for me WRT up and coming stuff
I do scour the market when I get bored, looking for some neat stuff, but hanging out on XDA is worth its weight in Gold too.
I went with lightflow myself for stock nx1

I will put that in the suggestion book. I have no clue what it will be. I just know that after two years, it WILL be time to update. But it has to be in the same class as the N1, and it has to be considered near the top for development too.
I haven't used TrackBall Alert but I have had Light Flow pro before and after I rooted my N1. I love the app; I have it set for every notification that I will have, all different colors. Great customization and well worth the money.
I've started running a stock/rooted OTA GRI40 and since its not deodexed/patched, I've had to give up my beloved Trackball Alert Pro.. anyways, nobody has commented on battery..?

I don't get any major drainage that I know of; with the recent update to Light Flow, you can now control how long it flashes for each notification; thus enabling things to show for 15 min (up till 34hr/never stop) to keep tthe battery topped.

I've not had any negative comments back from light flow on battery and evaluate every new user request to try and ensure I only add features that will have minimal impact.
When I think of new routines to make things even more efficient I'll go back and rewrite sections like the new v1.4.x has.
Yeah I've been running Light Flow for a couple days now and its not even showing up on my battery stats so I'm confident it is light on the battery

Yeah but that always freaks me out, thinking its going to burn my screen out. I know it probably won't, but I freak out.
Also why would one need an LED light on a tablet?

Why wouldn't you want useful things?
Out of curiosity, which tablets do have notification LEDs? I've tried searching but it's come up vague.
i've yet to see any tablet with an LED.
It's not needed as much on a tablet as on the phone with missed calls and texts.
NoLED should suffice just fine. And NoLED combats burn-in by having an option to move the notification around so it's never using the same pixel for long.
ive had noled on all s1 and s2 and s3 and i have never had any problems with it and now they have themes!!

I mean I wouldn't mind an LED light at all, but I see more of a use for it on a phone (unread text, missed call) than a tablet. I always have new emails so I don't know what it would really notify me of.

NoLED is really only for OLED screens, on an IPS it will run your battery bone dry in double time
Notification lights for things like Gmail, Facebook, Twitter
My HP Touchpad has an LED...
Idea, is it not possible to make a costum ROM with a function, "use screen as notification LED"?
I do not mind that there is no LED. I have a U20I thats runs so slow, that any replacement for android gaming is good for me .
My current tablet has capacitive keys and I use backlight notifications, so not having BLN will take a little getting used to.

NoLED has an option to not turn the screen on when the proximity sensor is "close", so you can just keep the tablet face down when it's not on the charger.

Really the only one that has impressed me is the eraser mode on the camera that removes moving objects... otherwise, all the "smart" features stay off. Battery hogs to the max.

Unless you use the "smart" features you don't know that for a fact. I have been using the smart features on and off for over a week, with the features / gimmicks on and running there isn't much battery drain at all.
While a lot of the features are gimmicks some are actually very useful.
Smart stay - (the best one out of all them, should be in stock Android)
Quick glance - (use this all time while it's on my desk or on a table)
Air view - (helps me dig through text messages fast and zoom in on some websites)
Air gesture - (I actually go in the gallery a lot and this makes browsing photos more fun and... natural? in a sense)
Palm motion - (use this all the time to answer phone calls and mute or pause music also use it to capture screenshots
Direct call - (I have to admit it's nice and very useful to just directly call someone while simply just moving the phone to your head while in the texting or contacts app)

I used Air View for a bit but it made my screen too sensitive which i used those specific programs.
besides that the only Air feature that i might turn on is Air Call Accept. And it only works during phone calls so its not bad.
The watchon TV controller thing is a bit weird. Doesnt work all the time..
Today I was eating lunch with my phone next to me. Got a call and used the gesture to answer and have the speaker turn on without me touching the phone. That was nice. Voice control camera is cool, but saying different things changes how the camera shoots. I'm still figuring that one out.
Thanks for the replies, none of these sounds useful to me.

Alright, i apologize for the snap judgement. Im fanatical about battery, and they do drain extra, which to me is unacceptable for what you get in exchange. Was much more impressed with the smart stay than any of the new ones, and depending on how many times you let the screen almost time out it can add a fairly substantial amount.
Your right, i should probably rephrase my 'hog' assessment, im probably more picky than others about battery. .

I'll be honest, I don't miss the LED notification. It really frees me to not be a slave to the phone. I use Mighty Text on the phone and at least while I'm home, notifications will show up on my laptop. The last few days I've been using their Chrome plugins which adds more notifications to the desktop, but I'm about ready to uninstall that because it can be really annoying.
I miss the LED terribly but haven't had time to look at the software alternatives. I often need to have the phone completely silent/no vibration, and not being able to see what's going on via varicolored strobing LED is a miss. Love the phone otherwise, but I really gotta sort out a solution using ambient display or some such, without killing the battery.
