Droid 3> Or <X? - Droid X General

Anyone play around with the droid 3 or upgrade from the X to it? I am thinking of using my upgrade on it.. I miss having a keyboard. I was waiting for the bionic but who knows when if it will come out, plus there's no keyboard..4G really isn't relevant for where I live yet.

Idk still wait for the bionic but if you don't need the 4g then the others seem more apealing. But if you get the bionic there will be plenty of new stuff for it, no doubt they will realease honeycomb for it if its popular enough.

Wait, people are still considering buying a Motorola phone when HTC is unlocking all their bootloaders and Samsung has been making it easy to do so as well?
Motorola as a nerd smartphone manufacturer is DEAD.

Xoom + DX = bluetooth tether for free without root. Also works with D1, D2, D2G, D2R2D2, and DPro. Probably will work with D3 and Bionic. Oh, and bluetooth tether with these Moto phones also will work with a Samsung Tab 10.1, and probably any other Honeycomb tablet. Regular adhoc Wifi hotspot doesn't work. Thanks Moto

You should be able to do that with any other Bluetooth Android phone, too. However, Bluetooth data transfer rates are ridiculous...you probably don't notice on 3G, but if you go to LTE, you'll see horrible performance doing that.

The D3 is a nice phone but Im holding out til the Bionic hits.
I've got 4G where I live already and want 4G for video chatting.
4G will provide a smoother Video chat experience when compared to a 3G connection.

Got a buddy of mine with the D3 and I was comparing it to an X2 and I would take the D3 over the X2 if I had to get a phone right now this minute. But its sounds more and more like the BIONIC is going to be the device to have. LTE and pretty much the same as the D3 in every other way. The D3 I think is a little late to the party at this point. It should have come out shortly before the but LTE push to hold people over but now I am afraid its going to get swept under the rug.
Then like some of the other posts said the Samsung devices are really frickin nice right now and that SuperAMOLED is incredible to look at.

How does the screen on the Droid 3 look as compared to the Droid X2?

From what I noticed they are the same when it came down to quality. So size is the biggest difference I saw and the X2 wins there.

On topic:
I would wait another couple of weeks for the bionic or any news of a SGSII. The Bionic has a home splash now at Verizon, and we all have thought for a while that August would be the right time anyways. Judge for your self from there, as the Bionic is rummored to be a slightly different beast. (probably a 3g phone vs. 4g Flagship type thing)
And less on-topic

Not Necessary. Look at the Atrix, I have some faith left for open boot loaders on future phones. Also, I love moto build quality and style. If you don't like moto phones, and the thread is asking specifically of a moto device, inside a thread for a moto device, you should probably take a long and hard look at your priorities.

Yeah besides some issues with my last DROID X Motorola has been rock solid hardware and great for reception and to me lately quality beats easy rooting. I have my X and three OG DROIDS my wife and sister are due to upgrade in november so we will see what's hot then but Motorola will still be the first phones I look at.

Relax. It was obvius that an older phone was going to get the update earlier than a pionner dual core phone. The Atrix is a whole new technology that is not as standar as other phones... On the other hand, just passed one month from its originally launch, what do you expect Android 6.3.5? Atrix is not a Dev phone, is a company (In fact a dual company, Motorola and At&t) personalised phone. Relax folks, it will come in time.

Yeah, I think they said "by the end of 2011" so I hope everyone likes FROzen YOgurt. We have no idea how far they are in testing Gingerbread with a full MotoBlur overlay. The DX, D2, and even the upcoming Bionic only use the MotoBlur Applications Platform that they have been working on since the release of GB and is probably easier to update. I think the Atrix is the only phone running full MotoBlur with 2.2, correct me if I'm wrong. And it seems they're putting a lot of work into that still considering the latest 4.1.57 build. I'd say not anytime before Q4 for the Atrix.
I always wondered how hard would it be for them to just throw honey comb on the atrix. The specs are the same as the xoom. Personally I don't mind waiting a bit longer if when they release ginger bread or honey comb they support dual core. I mean all the next gen phones coming out will be dual core and half of them are running the nivida tegra 2

P.S. No one wants to pay any money for your worthless laptop attachment. Who makes a trackpad that doesn't support scrolling anymore anyways?

If there was a Blur Atrix, and a 'Nexus' Atrix w/ unlocked bootloader and current software, it is hard to imagine any knowledgeable human buying the one with Blur.

no im actually quite serious
now i love android and i also hate the iphone with a bloody passion but in reality with locked bootloader on almost every new device made by the main manufactures(HTC, Motorola, and now samsung) makes it near impossible to make your phone yours and even with root access what can you really do that a jailbroken iphone cant?
i mean you dont have to use itunes and such but seriously it isnt hard to jailbreak an iphone and free it from itunes
in reality though the droid x will never be a droid 1, or a HTC Dream(G1) for that matter
EOL for the droid x is coming up and chances are that 2.3 is going to be the last OTA for the droid x and after that your stuck on 2.3 or what ever version manufactures leave you on until you buy a new device
at least the iphone will last 2 years before it stops getting updates
I picked up a DX on craigslist about a week ago to check out why people were leaving the Fascinate for it. I chose a Fascinate over the DX last fall and only regretted it until the first froyo leaks for it showed up.
In my opinion (grain of salt check) a froyoed Fascinate is a better phone than a froyoed DX. Development seems to be roughly the same in terms of quantity and the quality of development on the Fascinate feels better. My camera/camcorder works, bluetooth doesn't kill the battery, GPS is fixed.
I haven't played around yet with gingerbread (yeah, I'm waiting...) So I can't comment there. Sleigh it looks like fully functioning GB is right around the corner and there is a handicapped one out now for the Fascinate.
This is totally subjective, but the Fascinate is more comfortable to hold also. My DX is probably going to last another week before hitting "The 'bay".
Galaxy S II should be out in 1-2 months. Just wait and get that. Far better than either the Galaxy S or Droid X.

Stay with droid x or buy bionic

Hey everyone, just curious with opinions, should I stay with my droid x or buy the droid bionic when it comes out, take in mind I would have to pay full retail, thanks guys

I'm having the same thought as you. But retail? That's my drawback. Plus there has been so much happening in the last 2-3 months with the X. roms galore. So in the end I think I'm going to wait and watch. If it comes to the point that so many modders focus strictly on the bionic, that may make me jump on board sooner.
Yeah, retail and all the roms coming out for the X are starting to hold me back to, i will probably wait, and watch

I had the same urge before, but after cm4dx came out I see no point of buying a new phone until Ice Cream Sandwich hehe.
I just got my Droid X and I am coming from an OG Droid. This thing is WAY faster and so much smoother. AND THEN I put CyanogenMod 7 on this thing and now I am in love for real. Only thing the community needs is an open bootloader for custom kernels and I would be golden. I believe I am going to have to hold off on a newer phone, but I do get an upgrade in November. So I think I will sit back and watch what happens as well. Fingers crossed for an unlocked bootloader.
Thinking of the same thing.
I would have been eligible for annual upgrade. Now they discontinued.
What to do???
I'm going to wait it out. Droid X has been very good especially running Liberty GB. It will be interesting to see how the Bionic does though.

If you are waiting for the ultimate phone to spend $600 on, you will never do it. From the time super mega killer phone X is announced and finnally released, super mega killer phone Z is in the works with even better specs, etc. You can't win. Keeping up with the latest electronics is a waste of money. I suggest you wait until the Bionic is out a couple of weeks and see what the reviews are before you decide. Might be a turd.

Of course, but if you keep waiting for the next best thing you'll never buy anything.
If the Bionic comes next month, and the HD in October, I can wait for the HD. It has a bigger and better screen than the Bionic.
im thinking the bionic
The bionic 2 is such a beast I will wait for that.
Unless you have money to burn, burn wait until later in the year. I got my x on launch day, and I'm eligible for an upgrade (according to the guy at the version store who I have worked with a lot) in December. The I'm sure that I'm not alone. Besides, the x, really isn't that far out of date yet. It will be around new year. The moral of the story, and just wait a little while longer.

Yeah I'm eligible for upgrade in October. The bionic looks great but I'm sure if I wait a bit longer they'll announce a DX3 or something that will stomp bionic. Not to mention, 4G for Verizon is still very limited so I'd want to buy a phone that not only has power, but a network where that power could flourish.

I doubt, (even if it will exist) it will become the "Atrix 2". The Atrix has been out only 7 months (maybe 6?) and it's essentially the same phone with an extra 3 megapixels :/. What would be the point of this phone as a successor?
Atrix Upgrade
The new phone with have a faster 1.2 or 1.5 ghz processor, a larger 4.3 or 4.5" screen, curved edges on the screen, and better camera, and higher video rate.
I dont think this is the time to upgrade since its been announced that quad core phones as fast as 2.5 ghz will be released by xmas. So if you do upgrade now you will be upgrading again shortly. The android market is moving very fast.
Also Gingerbread is running nicely and I am happy with my phone.
Bigger screen, faster processor are upgrades I want. But I would also like my next phone to have a FM radio receiver. The Atrix has one but it does not work. The other exotic upgrade I would like to have is a built in TV receiver. A company in S Korea released a phone with a TV receiver in it but I have not seen it yet. That would certainly be an exotic upgrade and it could be a while before one is released here in the USA.
I also look forward to Ice Cream Sandwich but wil wait for the OTA release of that which officially be in November.
Not even an upgrade to be worthy as the ATRIX successor. More pixels, higher clocked chip, most likely a larger screen....ill pass and stay with my current oc'd ATRIX

I shared my thoughts on the Atrix 2 here: http://briefmobile.com/motorola-atrix-2-upgraded-with-lte-photos
Why is there a 4G icon with signal blips? AT&T and Moto use the "H+" for HSPA+. Maybe this thing will have LTE after all is said and done. It is most definitely discouraging to hear "no LTE," though.
I didn't see a fingerprint sensor... so if I'm correct and there isn't one, that would mean the only upgrade is the camera. No wonder Google bought Motorola Mobility, I wouldn't want a company like that representing the Android brand :/

Have you guys seen what motorola does over on Verizon for its droids? DROID 1 DROID 2 and DROID 3 are all incremental updates. DROID x to DROID x2 as well. Why wouldn't Moto make a slightly different phone and call it new? Every phone manufacturer does this from Htc to Motorola to Apple.

All you have to do is look at nvidia's "Roadmap" of the tegra chips to see whats happening with them and what their plans are. Here is a link so you can see for yourselves, http://blogs.nvidia.com/2011/02/teg...-chip-worlds-first-quadcore-mobile-processor/ Anyway looking like you upgrade in 2012 than 2013 etc considering according to their roadmap they have new stuff coming every year up to 2014. Regardless though if it is a supposed "Atrix 2" seems sorta pointless considering what we can already do with a rooted unlock Atrix granted not like your layman would know any different.

The Atrix was a pretty big leap in terms of mobile technology when it came out and is still extremely competitive with other Dual Core phones especially with the custom ROM's.
My thoughts should be that the Atrix 2 should be released when it makes another big jump in terms of technology, not miniscule upgrades.

Motorola 2012 Details: More Fingerprint Scanners, NFC Capabilities

Just got some interesting info at a Motorola event. The folks at Motorola haven't given up on the fingerprint scanner! More devices will be released in 2012 with an FP scanner and they'll have some interesting NFC capabilities too.
Also working on some details about the Atrix 3. I know that most of us were disappointed in the Atrix 2. While the OG Atrix was revolutionary (first dual-core phone, HSPA+, first qHD display, fingerprint scanner, lapdock, etc.), the Atrix 2 didn't seem to bring anything new to the table. The Atrix 3 (not sure if it'll be called that, but I think it's a safe bet) will be very very cool, according to some sources. I'm hearing about possible top-of-the-line specs.
Most of you know my blog. I wrote up an article detailing a few of the things the Software Integration Manager let slip at the Moto event. Pretty neat stuff. http://briefmobile.com/whats-coming-from-motorola-in-2012

Great news and great feeling for me to hear this. Thanks for info, Ken!
I have been loving Moto devices experiences for long time still now.Recently, I have also heard, seen and touched some new Moto decices, such as Atrix 2, Droid 4, Droid Razr, even Droid Razr Maxx, but I've never impressed and satisfied on all more than my current Atrix 1, just due to the following stuffs: FingerPrint scanner, Lapdock, 1900mAh battery, and... the notifications LED. These are just really essential features I need for works and communications of my own.
So great news if I can own an true upgrade of Atrix 1 (4G) in the short future from Motorola. I agree that the new Lapdock experience is not imperative must be Ubuntu OS, but it will even be better with new 4.0 ICS tablet interface, and I get started waiting for this.
Only thing I've been disappointing on the current Atrix 4G till now is the FM radio. Lets hope to the new Atrix will be armed this valued function.
And what I've been dreaming of in the new device? As for me, that is the 3300mAh battery. Yes, just equals to the same one in the Droid Razr Maxx, so its nice enough for me!
Lastly, I hope that Moto will never remove the Notification LED (or Message LED, as called by Moto in their devices manual books) from their all smartphone lines. THIS REALLY MAKES A SMARTPHONE TO BE A SMART ASSISTANT! If Moto keeps this convenience for people, then the world always keep the belief on Moto devices. I wish that I can say directly this to him - the Product Software Integration Manager.

That's definitely possible. He never said this new functionality would be limited to new devices.
I hope it won't be too large. Atrix 1 is perfect in size for me.
I hope they lay off the annoying trend of releasing a new device every 3 months and then providing updates a year later.
p.s. which phone are you on right now, ken?
Sorry Motorola.
I will never buy your smartphones(sure if it is a Tegra)again.
The Atrix has too many problem:
-Motoblur Stock Rom laggy
-Gallery slow
-Browser slow
-Videocam stuttering
-Random Reboot
-Sleep of Death
-headphones problem
-low brightness(I can't see anything under the sun)
-dull colors
-Raindrop
-To get an unpdate I have to wait one year..
-I Can't deactivate data connection or Roaming(WTF?)
-WebTop is too slow to be used
I have to change all,the Launcher,Gallery,Camera,Browser,Battery icon,Extended controls to have a decent smartphone.
I will kept my Atrix until I can(I can't spend 300euro so easily)and I'm a little afraid to Unlock Bootloader, beacause there isn't any stable and complete rom.
excuse the outburst.
The best thing about the Atrix and Motorola phones in general are the batteries. The Atrix came equipped with 1930mAh and the RAZR MAXX with freakin' 3300mAh!!
What's more promising is how Motorola still manage to keep the waistline very slim. The RAZR MAXX is 8.99mm. Hopefully the Atrix 3 packs 2500mAh+ with no sacrifice in thickness.
And lastly, in terms of software, Motoblur was previously ridiculously bloated and slow. The leaked ICS update on the RAZR shows that Motorola have followed suit with HTC and have tried to keep things slim. This is another great thing to expect as the slimmer the build, the faster it'll be speed-wise, as well as in terms of update speed (with admittedly Motorola REALLY need to improve on).
And most importantly, Motorola, PLEASE KEEP THE BOOTLOADER UNLOCKED!!!
Nice. Im glad to hear that Moto is moving forward with technology.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I also hope the Atrix 3 comes with the OMAP 5 series processor - which has dual Cortex A15's clocked at 2.0Ghz as well as the dual-core GPU SGX544MP2 (iPhone 4S uses SGX543MP2). It's also made under the 28nm process, so battery life will be super efficient as well (look at the One S's battery test in GSMArena; it did REALLY well with only a 1650mAh battery).
Also, similar to Tegra 3, it has two Cortex M4's as 'sort of companion cores.'
As Motorola have some sort of deal thingy with TI, I hope this turns out to be true, along with my above statement regarding battery life and software. The exciting thing is that these specs probably may end up true, as Motorola are known for their raw horsepower they put inside their smartphones. Remember the Atrix as the 'most powerful smartphone in the world?'
Wow, now I'm REALLY REALLY hoping that the bootloader doesn't come locked...
EDIT: Seems I was a bit overenthusiastic - the OMAP 5 series is outed for a Q4 2012/Q1 2013 date... so that only leaves us with the OMAP 4470, which is a dual-core A9 with single core SGX544. Slightly more disappointing but maybe Motorola will go Tegra 3?
So the Atrix 3 is expected to be released earlier than Q4 of this year? I'm eligible for an upgrade soon so I will be considering it if it has decent specs.

Some sort of Atrix 3 before Q4 2012 is likely. I have no source to back up that estimate. But, I've been following the industry for a long time and I know Motorola isn't going to wait 5 more months before releasing something competitive on AT&T.
In the meantime, I'm buying myself an HTC One XL.
The one problem I see for Motorola is this: all phones must have 4G LTE in 2012. That's a given. But, Motorola has practically no relationship with Qualcomm. Ever heard of a Qualcomm SoC in a Motorola phone? Qualcomm is the only maker of a 4G LTE-capable next generation (Cortex-A15) SoC.
So, Motorola has three possibilities:
Create their first ever Qualcomm SoC phones in 2012, build a new relationship
Throw NVIDIA Tegra 3's into their phones, find a separate modem from someone else. Not sure if this is possible right now.
Sacrifice SoC speed/quality for LTE, put out phones with last year's specs.

I hope they lay off the annoying trend of releasing a new device every 3 months and then providing updates a year later.
p.s. which phone are you on right now, ken?

Atrix 4G!
I also have a DROID RAZR and some other phones lying around from my review biz. But, my main phone is my Atrix.
