[Q] Simple one-touch data toggle? - Galaxy S II General

Hi guys...
I have been using dataswitch previously on my Captivate and Optimus 2x.
However it doesn't seem to be working at all on the sgs2
Any other data enabler/widget/ apn switch that works without problems?
I've tried "data enabler widget" and it seems to work half the time, while killing off my data abruptly often.
Any advice?

If want to toggle mobile data, Tasker works. Also, the Cognition ROM has a mobile data toggle on the status bar.

I actually haven't rooted my device. Don't see the need for root yet.
Seems fine working with stock unrooted.

I am using APN onnoff

jje

im using apndroid for that purpose.
can recommend it. free, working, widget.

What we need is a 3 position widget:
- off
- auto
- 2g only
Data connection on/off is only 50% of the job. Why have a separate toggle for 3G when it can be integrated.
Similar to the stock brightness widget button:
- 0%
- 50%
- 100%
- Auto

it seems like widgetsoid offers what you are looking for, but unfortunately in 3 seperate buttons:
Data - Enable/disable Data (2 way to do this + 1 way for root).
2G/3G - Sortcut to mobile network settings.
4G - Enable/disable 4G (WIMAX).
i havent tested it, but maybe you want to look at it.

Switchpro widget.

But holding the Power Button already comes with an option to turn the Data Off

I'm using data enabler widget from farproc now.
Seems to be ok. but it's kinda buggy at times.

The implications of data control apps changing APN's

Hi,
Does anyone know anything about these apps and widgets that are supposed to control mobile data? I mean apps like APNdroid, Switchpro etc.
Most of them it seems are unreliable, the ones Ive looked at anyway, but the common theme for them is to change the APN. For example if I use extended controls widget to control mobile data, it changes the APN to orangeinternet[extendedcontrols] when the widget is off by default. However, when I long press on the power button, it seems mobile data is on...
I was really wondering about the impact to battery as I assume my phone is searching for a non-existant APN, if you see what I mean?
I am hoping for some expert knowledge on this, as I am using Launcherpro Plus and so cant use the sense widget, and before anyone says to long press on power button, I thik its clumsy and one click too many!
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried switch pro? It's like the power control widget but you can select what options you want,... give it a go.

Yeah Ive tried it thanks, but again, it wasn't reliable enough for me and it changed the APN, iirc. I'm currently trying Data on Demand from the market, which you can set to turn off data when the phone sleeps, or schedule your own profile for data use.

Switch Widget for Mobile Data Network.

I've been trying to get a juicy theme going on but I'm having real trouble finding a switch to allow direct access to allow me to switch mobile data on and off.
SwitchPro doesn't allow me to do it, both "Data Connection" and "2g 3g" only switch it off for a few seconds and then it pops back up. If I then go into settings, Wireless, Mobile network shows as being ticked, yet says "Connection failed" - It is of course connected and functional.
Extended Controls 2g/3g and Data Network do exactly the same.
There is, of course, the native Sense UI widget...so how hard can it be if you don't want to use Sense?
Is there a widget out there that will allow me to directly switch Mobile Network (data) on and off from the homescreen?
Currently on latest Mocado R8 custom bake.
i had that problem before as well..what i did is remove the defualt apn and add them back manually..and the problem solve..u can try on this method..
Try APNDroid:

you can change switch pro's settings to make it do the same thing as APNDroid too.

Could you give me a quick step-by-step?
Will try apnDroid too, thanks guys.
EDIT - apndroid simply disables it for a few seconds, it then reconnects.
widget didnt do anything.
I need one because you have to press and hold the power button and it seems a bit rough on it and we all know that these little buttons always go bad so a widget would be great for relieving the burdon on the power button.
any other suggestions, for a rooted evo?

[Q] What else does the toolbar widget do?

sorry for the noob question i did try a search & read the wiki trouble is my question is "what is this" so rather hard to search, when the question is what is it!!!
on the start home screen there's a 5 item widget/toolbar that has
- wifi
- blueTh
- ?
- ?
- screen brightness
What are the 2 items that i only have question marks for, i've pressed them but what do they do (other than nothing obvious)?
Thanks in advance....
I'm pretty sure one is to enable data on mobile networks, the 2nd is to enable apps (eg gmail, maps etc) to sync using data on mobile networks or wifi.

cheers,
not sure though....
the 3rd & 4th buttons really dont seem to do anything even when plugged into the pc, what happens when you press them on yours?
thanks again
wifi, bluetooth, gps, sync, brightness
is there any way to edit those functions? or add/take away our own?
i'd love to swap a data connection on/off for that sync button.

Noooooo not on a Stock rom mate
yeah, I looked around a little today. Looks like the OS doesn't allow access to turning data on/off from anywhere but the settings menu. I found an app that just created a shortcut to the data menu. Works for me.
+1
I found 2g/3g in the market that links directly to the data menu & placed it on my homescreen
elegant? no - does the job? yes

[Q] How can I enable/disable 3G on 2.1 now?

Upgraded to 2.1 and first impressions are rubbish!
Why get rid of the enable/disable Data from the dragdown bar. How do I do this on 2.1?
Like this.
Go into settings > Wireless & network > Mobile Networks > Data Traffic.
After selecting / de-selecting that, the option will then appear in the drag-down bar.
The same way you'd do it on 1.6.
But that's not disabling 3G, that's just stopping apps from using your credit. To truly disable 3G, you'd have to change network mode to something like GSM, or 2G (I don't get that here in Australia, but I think it might be an option in other countries, I'm just guessing).
And... You'll learn to love 2.1 if you downgrade to 1.6 again, and find that your phone is performing horribly.
or just install curvefish apn switch
Or add the data widget to your home seen........

I use "3G widget" : it works realy good.
You can start / stop 3G manualy or let it turn it automatically on / off when you light up / off the screen.
I don't know why but it put 2 icons in the apps... useless for a widget to even have one when there are no properties to change.

3g cannot be disabled by quicksettings on 2.3.3

Hi,
After installing 2.3.3 my 3g cannot be disabled anymore through quicksettings. It can only be disconnected through enabling wifi or by using the menu data.connection... Is there any.workaround?
thanks in advance

Hold power button and deactivate data network mode.
will that disable all data connections including separate one for MMS? One of the nice things about QuickSettings on Froyo is that I can disable my main 3G/2G data connection but leave the MMS connection working.
Exactly... I would prefer to use the quicksettings rather than the button. Is this a quicksettings bug or a.ginger one?

No, it's not a bug with your app, I use "extended controls" and I have the same problem that I can only disable data via the settings menu or with the power button. Extended Controls just says "Gingerbread doesn't support direct data network switching" when trying to switch it off via the widget. However it directly leads you to the network settings where you can disable it normally which is still far more comfortable than using the power button.
