Any other swiping keyboards with easy nav besides Swype? - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I love and hate Swype. It is the first android keyboard I used and am very fast on it. I love how it only takes one swiping keypress to access the nav keys since I use them a lot, and how well it chooses the correct words.
However, since I am always changing roms on my captivates and nook color it is a real pain to constantly have to go through the stupid process of going to the website, signing in, waiting for an email, downloading the installer from an email link, signing in again, downloading and installing the beta, signing in again, generating the license (or whatever it is you are supposed to do- I am never quite sure), and often getting into some loop where I can never get the thing installed, then searching for an hour trying to find some hacked apk that does work. Currently, I cannot find an apk that works with my nook color, either. I am so ready to find a good replacement so I never have to use it again on any of my devices.
I use SlideIT a lot, but hate how you have to press 5 keys to access navigation and how it does not choose words as well as swype, and how it cannot handle single character words like I and a in the middle of a sentence, and how it cannot capitalize letters in the middle of a word (which my last name requires) without jumping through hoops.
Are there any swiping alternatives to these that work well?

although the ui isn't AS pretty, to me slide-it is more functionally sound for my use.

phoneturf, I sent you a PM with a solution.

What was your solution?

Have you tried flext9? I seem to like it enough to use on most of my android toys.
Sent from my ADR6300 using Tapatalk

I just downloaded the Swype apk from another thread and its working great on my nightly #144. I had SlideIt which worked very well (paid the $4.99 or whatever it was a month or so ago), but simply put nothing works as well as Swype IMO.
Thanks,
Josh

+1 for flext9

Swype for Moto Droid?

Is there no Swype version for Moto?
I just switched from an Eris and I had multiple colors of the Swype apk file but I cannot find one that fits my screen, per the error I get.
Anyone have one to fit the Moto or is there not one?
I found a good copy by Googling anyway. Let me know if you need it.
Here is the URL to the post containing themed colors for almost all Android device resolutions of Swype.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=671070
one good place to look for all things droid related is droid-life.com. Its run by Kellex, and he has a downloads page with all things that work on the Droid. Excellent blog
the free alternative, is called shapewriter its on android makret. in the end i didnt bother with it, as i had a real keyboard, but try it out, i know that the beta APK which was flying around has now expired i havent looked for a new one since.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=671070
ive now got swype working, well yes its installed.
bugs out when u got to landscape.... and then shape swyping doesnt work. but you can use it as a normal keyboard
this is the file i used.

Hey. mountaineerndixie i need the copy because mine doesnt work in land scape mode. thanks
Same here..
swype 5612 dead
anyone got the new beta ripped?
the new beta works ok in portrait, and is almost useless in landscape mode.
the older 5612 build that has just expired worked 100% flawless in my opinion.
it would be nice if someone could find a way to edit out the time bomb in that build so droid/incredible/nexus users alike could enjoy a working version of swype again
edit:
ive switched to shapewriter. works a bit better, especially for words that have double letters. the main things i miss about swype, is the broad landscape keyboard - great for typing passwords without having to use the slideout, and the options-abc gesture to bring up the arrow pad
shapewriter is great because it has gestures for cut, copy, paste, select all and other useful options - most importantly it works on my phone where swype no longer does that well
The new beta works fine in landscape mode. Droid Life links to a version that has been modified for the Motorola Droid / Milestone. If you go to the thread it mentions, you'll find smaller versions that do not have all fo the extra languages.
I'd link it but the forum won't let me.
My only complaint with Swype right now is the memory usage. It's consuming 31 megs of RAM just to run in the background. I know that Android will manage memory as needed but that's almost as much as Android System is using.
I have tried every swype link I can find. I have uninstalled and reinstalled. Each time it still tells me that I need to upgrade my copy of swype. Amy ideas?
Not really. I never received the expired message for 5612 but I uninstalled it and reinstalled the newer version anyway. Maybe try uninstalling it, power cycle your phone, and then install the new version?
What do you mean power cycle? Just take the battery out?
Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
Here ya go, get it while it's hot!
Hang onto your power button, select "turn phone off", give it a second or two, turn it back on. Taking the battery out would accomplish the same thing.

Remove swype AND installer. Reboot. Try an apk.
Man, I almost cried last night when I saw my swype not working. Hopefully this works. I don't know why they don't put it on the app market, I'd be willing to pay.

Swype sucks

Is it just me or are you guys also realizing that swype is absolutely horrible on the htc aria. The aria has too small of a screen to be able to use swype well. Whenever I drag my finger to the next letter i cant see if im on that letter because my finger is over it and the screen is so small.
Just wondering what you guys thought about swype on the aria
Love it on the Aria. I am used to the small screen though, from my htc magic.
Sent from my HTC Aria using XDA App
its not bad... i had it on my htc pure and the screen was also small, but i had a stylus on that which made things a lot easier.
I see what you're talking about. Fortunately I know where the keys are without seeing them so this isn't really a problem for me.
Love Swype on Aria, the point of using Swype is you don't need to look at the keyboard to type fast, which means you do need to know the position of the keys. I don't think it will make much different with a bigger screen since my thumb will still cover the keys I'm trying to type.
My only complaint about Swype is that you give up the voice-type feature when you use it. They really ought to reincorporate that feature, since it's nice to be able to take notes when I'm mumble, mumble, COUGH driving COUGH.
There. Now I've gone and done it. I've made Oprah hate me.
Regards,
Corporate Dog
EDIT: Oh. I forgot. I actually have TWO complaints.
I HATE how the recommended words pop-up is implemented. If I'm typing 'Bioware', and Swype recommends 'beware', I'd prefer it if my closing of the pop-up meant, "No. I don't care for any of your suggestions. Keep what I typed, as I typed it." rather than, "Accept the top recommendation."
I know there's a user dictionary in my phone, and I've certainly added to it, but I'm constantly using non-standard words.
They put the microphone back in the latest beta, which they closed like 3 days after they opened it.

It does get annoying from time to time, but I find it much easier than the standard keyboard. Especially when typing ridiculously long words which swype seems to pick up without a hitch.
Yea, I find the lack of a microphone shortcut annoying, too. Since I use Swype with my index finger, I don't really have a problem with the screen being too small. Swype is supposed to be able to correct for errors, anyways, but I have seen the correction fail at times. Swype is still more accurate than voice, anyways, and you can always resort to typing it out if Swype doesn't recognize it, which I think makes it better than voice. It would be amazing if voice worked perfectly, though, I'd never have to type again.

[Q] How can you change the keyboard?

On fascinate, the default android keyboard does not have the option to un-check. So, even if I installed other keyboards, only the default keyboard is on. Is there any way to disable the stock keyboard and use other keyboard that I want to use?
Thanks!
jus ordered my fascinate so still wait on mine but as far as I know you cant disabled but to switch it should be the same across the board on androids just tap ur text box then long press in the text box and it should pop up with ur options

In some cases, when you install a new keyboard manually (such as one of my favorites HTC_IME http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=624416), you have to go to Settings > Language & Keyboard and enable the checkbox next to the keyboard you installed.
After that, the instructions ksizzle listed above still apply.
Thanks!!! I do not have the phone with me right now, but I will try that!!
Coming from an HTC device, which has a keyboard that worked quite nicely, I was utterly disgusted by the horrible keyboard on this phone. Reading around a bit, I decided that Better Keyboard was the way to go, so I decided to shell out the $2.99 for it, and also downloaded a couple of the free themes. I now have a very good looking keyboard, which works 10 times better than the stock one.

It's called SilverBlue AndroidandMe. It's gray/silver keys over a medium blue background. It seems to fit well with the gray/blue theme that Samsung has implemented on this phone.
this is my first touch screen so what makes the htc and better keyboard better than the stock one?

The HTC_IME keyboard link I posted is pretty much the HTC keyboard with a ton of customizable options. And its a free download.

Ah darn, guess I should have hunted a little more. Oh well, I'm happy with better keyboard, and you can apply themes to it, for added value. For the record, I think it works even better than the HTC keyboard, but I'd have to actually try it on this phone to make a fair comparison. All I know is that I can type way faster on this one than I've ever been able to on a touchscreen phone before.

Wanted: Keyboard with arrows/directional keys

Well since all Android phones have trackpads, arrow keys is not needed. But what about us using HD2? It's annoying when you have to correct a mistake in the previous words. So, any keyboard (better free) that's able to do this? Thanks
Get Ultimate Keyboard. I dont think it's free, but its sooo well worth the dollar or two. Not only does it have arrows, but you can show/hide them and a really great toolbar via gestures. Not only that, but you can customise it to no end, color, key size, layout, it has swype style tracing that you can use if you want to, and when you get it all set up, you can save and export the setup, and restore it on the other builds on your sd card, so you only have to set it up one time. It really is the best, try it and you'll love it. It has every single thing you could possibly want in a keyboard

You can quickly access the directional keys & editing options by swyping from the 'swype' key to the 'SYM' key.

If you really want this keyboard, and find it worth spending a US Dollar or two (sorry, don't know what that converts to in Indionesian curency), you can install 'Market Enabler' and set your market's region to USA.
Probably not worth all the fuss, if all you want is arrow keys.
I'm pretty sure there are Sense builds available with the HTC IME keyboard that have the arrow keys by default.
But I figured I'd tell you all the options.

[Q] Has anyone pushed swype on to the Transformer?

The swiping on the ASUS keyboard is absolute garbage compared to Swype. It might as well not even be there.
Trying to official beta doesn't work - get an error about unsupported screen size.
I haven't tried forcing the issue.
-bZj
Too late for you now but the Amazon app store gave away flex9 keyboard which has swype functionality... in addition to voice dictation and handwriting.
swype feature is pretty good and works on the transformer.
I don't need a signature.
I have Swype and Dasur Slide it on mine and it is not a match made in heaven in the UK - as I have a conflict between the hardware keyboard and the software keyboard. It is very frustrating - as even though I have the software keyboards set to UK keyboards, this somehow alters the hardware keyboard to a US keyboard whne I re-dock. If anyone knows a way around this, I would be very grateful and the Asus trace keyboard is utter poo. I cannot use it. In fact I am not a big fan of Swype, I think Slide it is by far the best in its class.
I read a post here a few days ago showing how you could stop the dock keyboard being changed by the tab keyboard settings. Do search through the development forum. You need to move files around, etc.
I have Swype on mine but I don;t like it on the tab although it is great on my DesireHD. I use the Thumb keyboard which becomes natural very quickly.
EDIT
Here it is: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14600447#post14600447
Have the newest beta on mine as well, works great! What I tend to do is make use of the resizable keyboard, make ik smaller, position it on the right.
This way I can hold the tablet with my left hand, and swype with the right, without moving too much across the screen.
The fail in combination with the hardware keyboard is a shame, there is a solution, but you do need root, which I haven't got around to yet.

Cheers pal, it's fathers day and I am finally having a day to play with my new toy, so far the launcher has been changed and now it looks like I will be rooted by the end of the day. Didn't think it would last long unrooted.

I don't understand. I have Swype set as my software keyboard and am using the dock to type this. While I do get the annoying warning about setting the Asus keyboard when I first get things going, I haven't noticed any odd functions, or loss of capability. Am I missing something?

I don't have any problems either.
I think I did change something with the settings when I previously installed thumb keyboard (the @ was coming up as " with the dock keyboard) but I haven't had to do anything with swype.
Edit....I've not got round to rooting yet so I'm completely stock and using the uk layout.

I use Swype on both my Android phones and love it. A perfect present for Fathers day was an email saying that Swype had released a new beta which included additional Honeycomb support!
Sign up and try it out here at beta.swype.com
After all, it's free! (at the moment)
