Does anyone but me not mind the lack of streaming videos? - Xoom General

Ok, this is not an iPad vs Xoom debate but...I have in my possession an iPad 2 and a Xoom (perks of my work). I've had the ipad for about 2 weeks and the Xoom for only 2 days so I want to try to be fair but...
I think to myself, let's see how streaming video works on xoom compared to ipad. on ipad:
Netflix app - works great - Xoom - no such app
Hbogo on iPad works great - Xoom - no such app
Vudu on ipad works great - Xoom - no such app
Hulu Plus on ipad works - Xoom - what's hulu?
Just some other things I noticed -
looked for Wall Street Journal app which is great on iPad, but no such app
DirecTV app for iPad has some extra features than the Xoom app
Bank of AMerica App for ipad is nice but no such app for Xoom
Now I know, to each his own and purchase based on your needs but come on! Only thing iPad doesn't seem to do as well to me is flash of course.
Am I missing something?
I am a droid lover, Droid Original then Droid 2, then Droid Incredible etc. all rooted but a bit dissappointed in the feature list for Xoom. Am I alone?

Its not the limitation of xoom, in general its honeycomb OS itself. Some of the popular apps might showing up in market hopefully by end of this year.

Those of us that have rooted and flashed custom roms like Tiamat l.l have perfect ability to access hbogo, hulu, just about anything via the browser. I use Dolphin HD and the Tiamat rom lets the browser function as a desktop rather than mobile device. And yes, flash is great.
Bottom line...I'm not missing anything and I've got flash.

Hmmm, so, you can do HBOGO and hulu because you are rooted and can load another browser that is capable of running those apps? In other words, it's not the ROM that allows this but the rooted device allowing a different browser that HBOGO works on?
thanks for your reply

Your point is well taken. But the same list should include all of the sites you CAN stream from due to flash. I believe Netlfix and Hulu are both Silverlight based.
I stream from Amazon all of the time.

+1. Don't have a TV.

Its the same browser (or you can use a different one), its just changing your user agent report to desktop, not android. Hulu is flash, and you can modify flash to also report desktop, not android, and that enables streams. HBO is probably similar. And Netflix will come, as it has a tegra and Netflix/nvidia have said tegras have features for Netflix. Also, you can get play on, which streams from every source under the moon for a few bucks a month extra. And it plays nice with honeycomb.

Starting to make it sound better. I didn't want to root until I made a decision on returning it or not but I think I'll keep it and I just may have to get my wife an ipad
I did get a good deal at staples for 449 plus tax this week.
Thanks for everyone's comments.

im not rooted and yes it sux, I am actually debating on taking it back and just waiting until next year or see what Netflix/hbogo will do with the xoom2. I think 3.2 will be out this month so maybe that might intrigue them to make an app.

You can install flash_player and dolphin off the market. Go to settings in dolphin, and change your UA to desktop.
Don't have to be rooted.

I have a 47" TV that I use for video play back so that it why it doesn't bother me. Now if I was 16 and didn't have a tv then it would.

The app selection is pretty lame but as a backup I also have an iPad.

Sorry for being so touchy...maybe I misunderstood your comment.
Re-reading the thread, it came to me that people are really having two very different experiences with the Xoom. There's plain vanilla out of the box, which is nice but lacks some functionality, and the experience of those that have unlocked, rooted and customized their Xoom. The point I was trying to make is that if you're willing to be hands-on, you can have just about all the functions you are looking for.

There's no HULU app... yet theres a work-around that lets you watch hulu.
It's a question, not a demand asking someone to make a work-around, and also there was a beta going around a few months ago, but a VERY buggy beta. I'm unable to find it.
Nevermind, imageshack sucks.
i tried the ustream work around but the ustream app is ****. now i just use my ipod touch and hotspot my vibrant to it. works great. now what i'm looking for is a throttle fix.
There is no workaround for Netflix on Android. Hulu was relatively easy since 2.2 & higher have adobe flash built-in and Hulu (like the majority of video streaming sites) is flash based. The Android flash player was basically hex edited to fool Hulu into thinking it was a PC and not Android by modifying a text string.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11329624&postcount=81
Netflix on the other hand uses Silverlight platform (Microsoft's answer to Adobe Flash) which doesn't currently exist for Android. Until Netflix finally releases an app or we get Silverlight on Android there is no way to watch Netflix.
Yeah there is a workaround. Download PlayOn from the Market.

I was watching Star Trek from Netflix on my Vibrant tonight using playon, without a hitch.
Give me a link, and I'll tell them what's up.
I wasn't watching trek but I was using netflix through play on. Only problem is you need to be connected to the play on server on computer....still limited though. Netflix isn't on any android devices...not until they figure a proper drm format..no DRM is the only reason it wasn't released when iphone got it.

Once you do the initial WIFI pairing it will continue to work on 3G and other places VIA WIFI. The app syncs to the playon server to get your IP address, if your IP address changes(the one given to you by you ISP) you'll need to re-sync. but I use it out and about all the time on 3G and other peoples WIFI without a problem, just a little slow on the initial startup, but hey it is a beta app.

So I have to stream content from my PC...
WTF is the point?
I'll just watch it on my PC's big screen instead...this really is stupid..If I'm at home why would I watch ANYTHING on my phone's little screen when I can just watch it on my PC or laptop?
I watch sports highlights, Family Guy (Fox.com) etc. on my phone when I'm on the road on 3G..but if I'm home I'm not gonna use my phone when my PC offers a wayyyy better viewing experience.
Playon is a waste of time and money. It would be excellent if it offered Hulu/Netflix WITHOUT having to stream from a PC.

solution to get netflix working!!!(for now)

so i noticed that no ones been able to get netflix to work on the xoom but ive been watching movies all the time on mine and i thought id share how. so all you need is a computer and an apk called splashtop remote HD.
all it is is just a remote client for your computer so that you can use your computer on the road. but the part where netflix comes in is that the app has an option already checked by default to play the sound and everything on the xoom speakers instead of the computer speakers. and it can do full screen which when done with netflix, makes it perfect.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.splashtop.remote.pad&feature=search_result
I use this app daily. You can also play games that are in window mode on your PC as well. The app is great. the one posted above looks like it is the HD one that is the paid one.

Not rooting because of Google Movies

It's been rumored that rooted devices will not have access to rent/buy movies using Google's new Movie service.
Am I the only one holding back on rooting my device because of this? I tried thinking about it yesterday, and I do not know of any legitimate way to download a movie (legally - paid) and transfer to watch on my Tab. More to the point, I'd rather just rent at $5 than buy at $15.
I've been a rooter since I had a G1 and was always a proponent of rooting, but I don't want to lose what I feel is a key feature of a tablet -- the ability to watch movies.
I know that's not the case as of now .. I have the new market on my Fascinate .. rooted and can download movies and books like a champ. Maybe its something they will fix later . But isn't the case as of now .

My 10.1 is not rooted, and the Google Video app doesn't show up in the market. When I go to the web I can find the app, but my Samsung shows up grayed out and the market claims the device is not compatible with the Video App. I've got it on my Asus Transformer and Acer Iconia tablet though. All three live in the U.S. with me. Anyone have a clue? Maybe a direct download of the video app?
I can confirm that movie playback is indeed prohibited when SU is discovered. I can also confirm that the work around listed previously, er, works.
iTunes it isn't, but it is a legit way of getting media on an Android device. Much better than Samsung's implementation.
I'm one of those odd people who will hack their device on a whim, but won't download illegal media. If I'm going to watch something, I'll rent or buy it.
If Google closes the work around and I have to choose between root and movies, root wins. No contest

Only way possible is via the tv station website if they stream over the internet.
Or as the other gent said slingbox.
I dont recomend remoting into an htpc with a tv tuner because the resources required will not allow for decent quality video.
It would probably be jumpy missing dozens of frames per couple of sconds and have rolling lines from screen refreshes.
But if you are at home doing this its possible remote desktop might be ok.
But via cellular or public wifi...? No

It 'may' be possible but will require additional hardware.
I have an HDHomeRun from SiliconDust and essetinally, what it does is stream my OTA antenna to my network computers.

I've been watching various threads on this one for weeks. I'm hopeful that Amazon will release an app for the rest of us soon given that 1) they just released an app for Google TV, and 2) they make most of their money from media, not Kindle hardware....so I'm hoping the speculation that they are limiting it to the Kindle for competitive reasons, is false.
The only way I've been able to watch Amazon VOD is by loading flash and using Firefox. It works, but it is FAR from ideal.

Understood....I guess my point was more that they are still releasing android apps, even though there is speculation out there that they want to limit android access to the Kindle. A while back there was the same speculation about iDevices, but now we have both an iPad and iPhone/Pod app. I'm hopeful we'll have one soon....

Amazon's selection of free stuff to stream isn't as extensive as Netflix, I've found. At least not in what I like to watch. They do, however, have a lot of things that Netflix doesn't have. We split a Prime membership with my brother but I don't intend on getting rid of our Netflix or even Hulu+ memberships just yet.
