Your thoughts on Gingerbread release for the Samsung Vibrant. - Vibrant General

Hello,
Just wanted your thoughts on the Official Gingerbread for Vibrant.
Do you think it will ever come?
Do you even care?
Any feedback is appreciated .

Cm7 is gingerbread so its already out lol
Need help with cm7? Pm me I can try to help

I don't think about it because I don't care. Gingerbread for the Vibrant 3G is the last thing on Samsungs list.

i have cm7 so i could care less! i will be getting the hercules in a few months anyway

The Gingerbread ROMS are already pretty smooth and nice so I no longer care about the stock one which they seem that don't even WANT to update.
Whatev's when I get the chance I will be buying the SGSII.
...When it doesn't cost a lung for me lol

It's not going to happen.
And neither will me buying another Samsung mobile device, ever.

Ditto.

Probably not coming since the Galaxy S 4G is essentially the successor to the original Vibrant. It would be a terrible sales decision for T-Mobile to support the older model, especially when the two are almost identical except for 4G, an FFC, and the lack of internal storage on the 4G.

I hate u guys.
I guess my best bet is to hunt craigslist for a nexus s.

Really?
No CM7 is the same experience you will get with a Nexus S.
Buy a dual core phone or
Wait for next year.
Quad Cores aren't supposed to be ready until Q3 2012 or early 2013.

I wouldn't mind waiting, I've played around with the 4g vibrant, and I like the 3g model better. The ffc is no big deal with me.
But I have a gut feeling that it will be early next year before we get a 2.3 from tmobile.

Sorry, but current dual cores devices are useless and equally as fast as the Nexus S since ICS is yet to be released to optimize Android for multicore devices. You may as well get the one phone guaranteed to get ICS which will increase the Nexus's speed as well. The G2X looks like its not getting ICS and the Sensation would be bogged down by Sense again. Galaxy S2, maybe.

No offense because the 2.3 Roms out right now are smooth. But they straight murder the battery life. Why have a mobile device if you a charge every 8 hours.

No, I held out hope because Samsung promised and promised and promised, and there was a BIG media hullabaloo about the lack of timeliness on the 2.2 update.
Samsung has had exactly ONE press release saying they're putting 2.3 on "all" Galaxy S phones and nobody in the media is talking about a lack of update. Basically, it's as if no-one cares, Samsung included. Only a few people on forums are making any fuss about it, and everybody knows forums in general fly fairly low under the radar.
I still say we're not going to see it, and even if Samsung delivers it before the end of the year, it's far too little far too late. I have no desire to reward their failures and apathy with more purchases.
edit: Oh, and you can thank the ****ing SGS 4G for the lack of an update. IT'S getting 2.3 leaks left and ****ing right, and the rumor is from devs in the know that there isn't even 2.3 source code in existence for the Vibrant.

You are right the good thing about dual cores is one core is incharge of one process and other core incharge of another process. This would probably be best for me as I am constantly studying in school, and switch between apps really fast and single core just cant take from browser to xxxx app to xxxx app and back to browser without it getting stuck!?
If you got like 15 apps and just use it for ROMS and GPS and shiny fast things then by all means stick with the Galaxy S.

Okay people, please stop coming to the Vibrant threads and doing nothing but bash the Vibrant, Samsung and T-Mobile and all that usual crap. The Vibrant is still one the most powerful devices and really only has ONe flaw that cannot be easily fixed with a new ROM. And that flaw is the GPS. It is not even as bad as people are making it out to be either, I use it constantly and each new kernal only improves it.
Yes, the Vibrant does not have an official 2.2 from T-mobile, but this is more T-mobile's fault then anything. ATT Galaxy S devices already have 2.2.
I know, the Vibrant does not have a FFC, but who actually uses it and if so, what for? Yes, it does have big omission of a flash for the camera. I don't mind this sacrifice since I have the fastest phone of anyone I know.
Okay, sorry for the rant.
I have no issues with Samsung devices and they are imho, a really good electronics manufacturer and I have not seen one bad device from them. I would love to get my hands on the new Vib4g. In fact, if carriers had better upgrade policies for phones, I would probably get it, or at least wait for the dual-core version coming in march.
Captivate has no 2.2. No US galaxy S devices have it. Get a clue before trying to reprimand, IMO.

I don't think Samsung cares what you guys think. They've probably got until June the dual cores start dropping in force; in the meantime the will likely sell a lot of these as they will branded hspa+ 21, the fastest phone in T-Mo's lineup.

I am sooo sorry that i made the mistake and thought that the ATT had 2.2. I just remember reading about a 2.2 update through Keis for it.
Man people can be such asses about the most inane things.
All I was trying to do is express my annoyance, in my rant, about reading nothing but bashing of the Vib in the Vib forums. If you don't like it, that is fine, if you have moved on, that is fine. No reason to hold a grudge and look for any reason possible to ***** and make yourself seem superior because you have "found the light".
i will be calling the loyalty department...that's all....

thunderbolt...

I tried the Thunderbolt for 2 weeks and returned it and this is why... its about twice as thick and ALOT heavier than the fascinate. Battery wouldn't last all day when I barely used it while my fascinate would easily last 2 days with little use or a full day of heavy use. The screen on the fascinate looks a lot better than the thunderbolt. Another thing I noticed was that the thunderbolt was always a lot hotter then my fascinate even when it was at its regular clock speed and was regularly at 110 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. So if anybody is thinking about getting the thunderbolt I hope I saved you the $35 restocking fee.
Nice to hear that the grass isn't always greener!

Kernels will help with the battery life, and I've used it and I don't mind the heaviness at all. The main reasons why I'm not bothering to upgrade to it is because the screen isn't as nice, and the GPU doesn't seem as good as the Fascinate's. To expand on that GPU point, I used Neocore on my sister's Thunderbolt and my Fascinate at the same time, and my Fascinate performed smoother and quicker, however the final FPS score was apparently better on the Thunderbolt's, which I found strange. However visuals don't lie, while benchmarks sometimes do (especially quadrants).
Overall, I'd just wait for a decent dual-core phone on Verizon, rather than upgrading to the Thunderbolt. Galaxy S II anyone?

I havent had 2 weeks worth of trial with it, but my Daughter just got one. As with every phone, it has it's ups and downs. I agree with most of the OP, but it has some positives. The front camera for one, the 4G for another.
It is like heaving around a brick though in size and weight compared to the Fascinate.
I am not switching to anything anytime soon, but I would still wait awhile to see what the community does with the customizations before i would choose anything...
ha I don't care even if Galaxy 2 has 2ghz triple core, I wouldn't buy Samsung phone again. I'd rather have faster update than better hardware.

That might be because the fascinate is framerate limited to ~60 fps, it won't go above 60, even if the GPU could run it faster
Battery life for me has been similar to my fascinate and it was worth switching just to be able to use data while I'm using the phone. My area won't have LTE for another year but I use a lot of data and getting an unlimited plan while verizon still offers them seemed prudent.

Samsung Stratusphere closest Galaxy S variant to the Epic...maybe

So as my old thread kinda pointed out before, the Samsung slider Verizon was getting was awfully similar to our Epics in appearance. And guess what? it is real and it's being released soon. So what I found to be interesting about it is that it runs on the exact same hardware as the Epic! Well, that is, excluding the processor -__- while we have a single core 1ghz processor, the Verizon slider will sport a dualcore 1.2ghz processor. The real reason behind this post is this: this to me sounds like the closest sibling our Epic has in the Galaxy S family thus far, so with the processors being the only real difference, will we be able to port anything from it over to the Epic and/or will their source help us in any way to further advance development on our Epics? Hmmm...

So there still might be some hope for us afterall. The mandatory 18 month support deal google is enforcing now means that this Verizon slider will hopefully get up to ICS, and if we can hopefully find something useful from it ( like port some of its ROMs, kernels, use some of its source) then we might have a shot at extending the Epics "life" right? I'm being hopeful because as bad as I want to jump ship to a new device, I'm not ready to give up my physical keyboard just yet.
EDIT: ok, just reread it JC and your right. As of now, all the hardware specs coincide with our Epics, the processor it will be porting is yet to be announced. It does say it'll be a "budget phone" in another article I read, so considering high end devices at the moment are sporting dual core processor 1.2ghz and up, I'm willing to be it will also be a 1ghz single core like ours

Unfortunately I wouldn't doubt it. The Galaxy S line(Not 2) was handled horribly. We should have been like Samsungs personal nexus line with support and updates, but not a single phone got that. Which isn't bad in all truth. But it could have went better with ICS coming soon.
Also aren't we still within 18 months? It's been a year but not too much over it.

Yeah especially if we were basically Samsung's testers for Gingerbread on another similar device. I don't know enough about development to know if ROMs could be easily ported from it

Everything I saw about the stratosphere showed it to be exactly like the epic, just for VZW. Been waiting for it as my girlfriend has VZW and her renewal is this month. And the leaked pics I've seen of it show 2.3.4, so maybe if we're lucky we'll see the source for that and can put something together from it if we don't see official GB released by then..

The 18 month support policy wasn't being enforced until just recently so our Epic's, I'm guessing, won't get further than GB (officially speaking of course) Korey also stated that GB would be the final "dying breath" of the Epic support wise. So this could be our final chance at a big helping hand in development...

Well what this handset has that the rest of the other handsets dnt is the hardware keyboard which I heard was a problem devs had a rough time with considering the other galaxy s counter parts had no hardware keyboard. Also, the rest of the hardware matches perfectly, all we need is the processor to be announced. I think it will be similar. Verizon rehashed the Evo a little less than a year later. Verizon only has 1 dual core 4G phone. Finally, Verizon said they weren't getting a GSII variant and if this was dualcore, it would probably be considered a GSII variant just like the epic is.
Well they also have a better screen because they have a super amoled plus instead of a super amoled so they don't have to deal with weird subpixels.

For the people having second thoughts about the epic touch 4g

All I got go say is if you have a upgrade coming up soon this is the phone to get. If your worried about the lack of a physical keyboard trust me I feel your pain but after having this phone for about 3days already I can honestly say I don't miss the physical keyboard at all. This phone is so much earlier to root and install customs roms. The speed is incredible and with the right rom and kernel combo you can easily get over 6000 on the benchmarks score. Oh if your short on cash don't worry what ever corporate sprint store you go to they will buy back your old epic for 80.00. If you got an upgrade coming the touch is the way to go. Did I mention front facing video recorder. Well anyway it was indeed a pleasure being apart of this wonderful forum for over a year I hope to see you soon over on the epic touch forums. Take care.

Why would people update only to be stuck on contract for two years with no LTE? Plus the keyboard is still a need for me or a bigger screen the Galaxy Nexus sized screen is looking good for me. You mentioned it was easier to root and install custom ROM on the ET4G how exactly can it be easier than a one click root on froyo or flashing clockwork mod on gingerbread, then flashing a ROM in clockwork?...also with CM7(which is official on our phone now) we get front facing camera video recording also. So I don't really see the need to get an ET4G

Negatives:
-800x480 screen: So 2 years ago. 1280x720 AMOLED or bust.
-WiMax: They're not expanding to my area, so I'd rather go with the future LTE.
-Quad-Core phones are coming out. Higher performance ceiling at the same battery use, or even less with newer deep sleep modes.
My upgrade isn't until june, so I'll be going Quad-core.
While the ET4G is undoubtedly the best Sprint phone, I don't think it is worth using an upgrade on. The OG Epic is still a very good phone and is only getting better thanks to the great work of our devs. I will be using my upgrade on a quad core LTE 1280x720 monster phone. Probably the GS3.
Wait for an LTE device. Would be the best logical phone choice imo

At this point I might as well wait until my contract is up in July and get the next generation of phones, which I hope have an LTE radio.

When it comes to electronics... I generally skip a generation!
Galaxy S waiting on Galaxy S III
iPod Touch 3G waiting on iPod Touch 4G (Maybe...)
Playstation 2 waiting on Playstation 4
2D TV waiting on 4D TV
2WD Car waiting on 6WD Car
...
???
i was thinking about the white epic touch, but wouldn't use an upgrade for it, just the tax refund.
See a lot of people waiting on the GS3 but the 2 isn't that old, how long would it be till 3 comes out? Are there official mumblings of a 3 with specs n such or is this all just assumption?
No 4G in my area and who knows when I'll get it, not sure waiting on LTE is worth it.
*edit* also I wouldn't be using an upgrade if I did get a new one, just pay for it straight up. Store guys hate it when you get a phone without a contract though.

[Q] What do you think is your end of life for the epic?

Hey everyone,
Just wondering if people have an idea of how long they'll stay with there Epic? I don't think I've ever loved a phone as much as I love this one but I'm sure I'll be tempted away by something new this summer when my renewal credit is up.
What about you?
Whenever quadcore lte phones roll out ill be upgrading ..... I actually have a two year upgrade though its only been a year which was very tempting but I can wait

+1 Agreed! I love my epic!
I'm ready. Promotion.
I'm eligible now. Just waiting for something good.

This phone has had such great staying power so far..it does just a little bit of everything just good enough that i'm not tempted to change one bit yet. The only reason for me to change is improved hardware/design plus I think I'm ready to ditch the KB.

Samsung Note LTE for sprint or a quadcore.. whichever I fall in love with first!
Waiting on SGS3. Eligible in July. May just go for the Nexus if the 3 looks like a long wait on Sprint, though.
Waiting for LTE with a hardware keyboard... just don't like the idea of using up all my screen with a keyboard.
I may be waiting forever because these cheap manufacturers don't want to make them anymore.

This.
I think I can wait another year for my next phone. Hopefully we'll have LTE here and there will be a decent LTE phone for sprint.

I just got the epic last week. Running it on virgin mobile. Can't beat $25 bucks a month
Ill probably run the epic for another year or so. Its a still a great phone and a big upgrade compared to my old optimistic v.
I am still getting a Google phone... like I said before, I don't want to be pissed off by samsung's lack if updates, closed source ROM, or HTCs locked bootloaders. I would actually like a Google phone on stock... I don't care if there is 65 core... single core is fast enough and dual core is amazing. Higher on a mobile phone is just stupid until software advances.

The Epic its the first phone that I've had for more than six months and not thought " I REALLY want a new phone!" It's been almost a year and a half now. I might upgrade to the G Nex if/ when out comes to Sprint or a quad core lte...

I see little reason to upgrade to something else until LTE is deployed in my area now that CM9 is on the horizon.
I might finally be ready for a phone without a keyboard. The Galaxy Nexus keeps calling me.
I will never get rid of my epic but if sprint gets galaxy note2 I will have to upgrade and keep epic for fun. Even better would be a nexus note.
Keyboard or gtfo
