3.1 update pulled mid release? -That's what Acer Support says. "New Build Tomorrow" - Acer Iconia A500

3.1 update pulled mid release? -That's what Acer Support says. "New Build Tomorrow"
So earlier today, I finally received my 3.1 OTA update notification....
I wasn't ready at the time to initiate it, so I declined, unfroze my bloat apps, un rooted, and then attempted to manually check for updates.
It says my device is "Up to Date"
Obviously, I hadn't updated, and am still on 3.0.1, so I called Acer tech support.
According to representative, Acer pulled the 3.1 update mid-release today. Supposedly due to a bug causing some devices to not take the update.
"They will be re releasing a new build of 3.1 later today or tomorrow" he said.
So here I sit, on 3.0.1, and am giving the community a heads up that they might be getting yet another OTA update. MAYBE. That's at least what was understood.
Anyone else having this issue? I know they're rolling out they update gradually, but I would have figured I would have been able to manually initiate the process.

I ended up having to download/install 4x before mine "took" yesterday, just hope they push an incremental update as well with a different build number.
One of the failures came back as an "invalid file" before it even rebooted into recovery; the other 2 fails were because I hadn't rolled back all of the system files I'd replaced.
Maybe they're fixing the "invalid file" issue?

I had the same trouble today. Yesterday evening and this morning, I was able to update to 3.1 OTA. But as i had no time to do this, I was expecting to do the update this evening.
And now, it says that my device is up to date. (3.0.1)
I will wait tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up. I was wondering why I could not update to 3.1 today

Well that makes sense. When I was installing the update it took me 6 attempts: 4 times it just stopped downloading and restarted randomly and once it said "installation invalid" or something along those lines. Thankfully it worked in the end, although Kobo reader doesn't seem to work at all anymore. Keeps FCing

Thanks for the heads-up. I ran the update after I got home from work tonight. I got some sort of error, and it booted back into 3.01 just fine. I manually checked for the update again, and now I'm getting "Your device is up to date".

Looks like I was right in a previous post where I said it'd be best to wait for 3.1.1!
And all those fanbois attacking me over it.. LOL!!

Weird- Mine said update was available yesterday evening and I did it and it worked (UK time). It shows as 3.1 now, but the file it downloaded was some weird file name containing 4.0.11 or soemthing similar? Must admit haven't played around thoroughly to see if there's any difference- waiting for weekend.
When they re-release do you think I'll get the 'fix' for whatever was wrong??

Depends entirely on what they're fixing. If it's just something to do with the updates failing, then why would they need to update devices that already have it?

True- I thought they'd just do a blanket update for all to get all tablets with the same 'build'- easier to maintain if needed- like they do at work for IT purposes.
Also I was not rooted, not sure if that would have made a difference! (I'm a basic user but learning through xda!)

I lost my opportunity to install 4.010.08. Two days ago I got the notice of an update. I tried to hold off as I wanted to see if I could capture the update and share it with others. After I got off work the next day and with some alogcat info I tried to check for updates and it was gone. Now I'm stuck on 3. 01 still. Hopefully they push out the update again as this time ill be ready.

I think they were supposed to push the update today, but I'm not seeing anything yet either. Anyone got any official word?

My is 3.0.1. I run the update check and it says "your device is up to date."
Would it let you update to 3.1 if it had been rooted?

Just chated with ACER support. Well, not exactly very knowledgeable, so I would take it with a pinch of salt. But, what I was told is the update will be pushed and can not be initiated from the user end and I should be getting it soon. Also it is Google and not Acer responsible for rolling out the update. Make of it what you will.

I haven't got the OTA update as of now wonder if it is me or other people haven't received the OTA update as well
Haven't seen it and I think a lot of us are in the same 'waiting' boat
I'll give it another day or I'll just do it manually...
i havent yet but im not to concerned, it did say untill the end of the week some people may not get the OTA update. gotta be patient, its hard tho lol.
It's rolling out in batches guys... like thisguy10 said... no need to be concerned. You'll get it eventually.

I wonder what factors prioritize whose phone for the update? I'm located in Asia, not in one of the four countries Google'll ship to even, and I got my update really fast. So it can't be geographic-based.

It's a system pop-up. You can also do the "About phone -> Check for system updates" to find it.

Seems to me that on factory images you would still get the OTA updates. In my experience, I've always been prompted before updating.
However, on Tmobile in the Cleveland area, not OTA yet.
didn't get OTA. saw update available through diff ref to engadget, immediately came here, found file, installed.

I got impatient and got a link off Amon_RA's twitter for the ota update, downloaded, renamed to update.zip, installed update through the stock bootloader (all on my phone i might add)
I still haven't rooted my phone, making sure there's no flaws before I do. The native multi-touch is pretty flawless. Seems to take care of some signal loss and the constant missing of the bottom menu buttons. (or maybe that's just my imagination)

Eclair to Froyo: How often do phones check?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

My phone doesn't poll for market updates, i'm only notified if I actually open market.
Besides, this is from sprint, not from market.

I don't believe they would do it that way. A vast majority of users are on the latest while there is probably a minority who didn't update past DI07. They get the latest first and then get the stragglers in the later days.

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!
Whosdaman,
Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?

Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!

but i did look for awhile, and from what i gather, a notification should have popped up on my xoom.
but one did not.
so how do i update the dang thing?
You wait, leave it connected to the internet (WiFi or 3g), it will eventually download and prompt you to install.
I just got mine, all I did was wait patiently.
sent from the honey moto
well i've been connected to wifi for about 6 hours now, and i'm always connected through verizon, but i haven't seen a single thing to do with an update.
They won't roll out the update to all devices at the same time. They have to do it in batches so they can minimise any update related problems should they occur.
So basically, my device is going to start downloading this update, without any previous consent by me, and will just prompt me to install once the update is downloaded?
Well, if it's like any other OTA update I've had it'll ask you before it starts to download. But yeah, essentially.
You will get an icon in your notification window near the clock. Click on it and it will tell you a system update is available, and give you 3 options; Just click 'Install Now' and watch it go and in 10 min (or less) you will be updated.
Sweet deal. Thanks guys... I was seriously starting to get very distraught.
I only owned an ios device before... but my girlfriend has a Captivate... so watching her be unable to get froyo for so long was starting to get me worried about my Xoom.

While yes that what I would do if it were mine (My Incredible is running CM7 RC2), she doesn't care much. Just as long as it works for her then she is happy.
Yeah, my wife's the same. Luckily she's on Froyo (Desire) so it's not really an issue. I would forcibly update it to Gingerbread if I thought she'd notice.

Your device periodically checks google's servers to see if there is update. Updates are released in batches so your device may not see an update until some time later. They can be downloaded off of wifi. Don't worry you're not hosed.

That happened on my Rooted/stock ROM Evo. Every now and then it pops up asking me to install an update that it just downloaded. Easy enough to simply decline, but pretty anoying though. At some point, I'll wander over to the Evo forum to see about (perhaps) pushing the new Cyanogen ROM, but im finding it hard to get excited about the phone these days...
Edit: Also, for those keeping score... My Xoom has not yet seen the update (5:17PM EST).

Did Acer pull the 3.1 update? (update: YES)

Yesterday my tablet offered to update, but it failed the update - tried twice. The only thing I've done is root the tablet, I haven't uninstalled any default apps or anything.
I figured no big deal I'd try at work from my development machine today where I could unroot it and check adb logs and such.
Today I check for updates and I get "Your device is up to date" but I'm still on 3.0.1.

Checked the devel forum and found that this appears to be the case - they pulled the update and promise a new build tomorrow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158359
hmmm, I wonder if it's anything to do with getting kicked out of the browser on a regular basis since I installed 3.1. And maybe the laggy keyboard?
so.. what'll happen if you successfully updated and aren't having any problems?
Seems like nothing if you already have 3.1 installed successfully... My tablet is still on 3.1 with no issues there.
I got a message to update to 3.1 today and have tried 3 times to apply the update, failed each time. I have unrooted, factory reset, and still failed. I am hoping that it is on ACER's end and not something in my tab.
My tablet is back to stock and still only gets 1/4 of the way through the application of the update before getting the orange ! in a triangle.
I spoke to ACER yesterday. They said there is a known problem with the 3.1 update and they should be releasing a new one soon. I asked how soon, but got no response. Once I got the update notification today, I thought maybe it was the new one?? Guess not.
Model: A500
Version: 3.0.1
Kernal: 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b
Build: 1.104.02_COM_GEN1
EDIT: I am in ATL and bought my tablet from BestBuy in Kennesaw GA opening weekend.
Any advice?

I, also, am having no operating system issues with 3.1. Overdrive Media Console has gone flakey with respect to audiobooks, but I was blaming that on OMC, not 3.1. I was very surprised to learn that Acer pulled the update. This begs the question, of course, what will happen with regard to the new update for those of us who successfully updated to 3.1? I had no problems and I had a rooted tablet, but had not made any other modifications.

Is there a source other than what someone on XDA has "said"?
People lie. I'm not saying the original user lied but I've already seen a few posts linking to that one claiming along the lines, that 'Acer has said they pulled the update' when there is absolutely no official source.
The update has worked and is working for many of us. A friend of mine also got an update yesterday, which doesn't fall in line with the update being 'pulled' by Acer.
As you can see, many of us are getting different builds. What I SUSPECT is the case, is people are rooting and changing their build.props and it's confusing the update procedure on some units. People who don't know the ups and downs of rooting have done just that. They've switched files and components, wpa supplicant files etc. and noone knows the exact process that the device/software users to grab an update. This is just complete speculation on my part, I updated fine and so did a friend of mine that owns it. I did not root, he did not root. We both got the same build of 3.1 and he got his weeks after I got mine.
The point of my message is this, post rumor or something in the title so people don't just read your message and run with it. Because down the line, people are going to quote your thread as well and then lots of people will think "Acer pulled the update!, what's wrong with the one it put out originally!?" and that isn't necessarily the actual case.

It absolutely does not. This happens on phones as well. If your device is showing an update and you decide to factory reset or even reboot before you download the update, there is a possibility that you're moved down a bit in the server queue.
It's very rare that it happen on a reboot, but it is def. possible if you do a factory reset. Any number of things can explain a stalled update, it doesn't at all mean Acer pulled it.
I'm still waiting for an official source...nothing so far on Acer's FB or anything like that. If anyone could provide one, that'd be great.
I just bought my new A500 yesterday. It is not rooted. When I connected to my home network for the first time, I received a message telling me that an update was available. I assumed it was the 3.1 that everyone was talking about. It downloaded and installed with nary a hitch. I got confirmation of successful update. After the update, I realized that I was having some of the same issues that others were talking about, namely a dodgy keyboard and the inability to activate CAPS Lock. It is then that I discovered that I had NOT received the 3.1 upgrade, but rather, something below. Here is what I found when I looked at Settings > About device.
Android Version: 3.0.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3
Build Number: ACER_A500_1.141.07_COM_GEN1
Whatever version this is, it too is not quite ready for prime time. I hope they release a reliable update soon!
That is the Build that I had to be at before I was moved to Build Number ACER_A500_4.010.08_COM_GEN2 and VER 3.1.
Good luck with your new A500 hope you like it as much as I like mine.
ok, i just got off the phone with a senior acer tech, yes and actual technician not from india. So this should put your mind at ease. Acer sold more units then they expected and it resulted in google not having enough server to service all of the android devices. So for example acer put out 4 million units but there is only 3.7 million on the google registery as of yet. all the people including my self that have 2 units and one updated and on didn't will have to wait a little. PS the 3.1 update is loaded with bugs as well. Don't think it's the holy grail.
problems with 3.1 are less then 3.0.1 but they are there like random closes, slow downs even though it's doing nothing, late coming out of sleep and wifi issues and still no support for external hard drive, and most keyboards don't work.
all in all if you don't have it yet it's coming, if you do well wish and hope for 3.2 update soon like me

You're kidding - and after I got right royally slapped for saying exactly the same thing a month ago.
Just proves this place is chock full of fanbois.. (them, not you)
lolz @ mnaderi. my experience has been completely opposite. i've been on 3.1 for about a week now and it's waaaaay better than 3.0.1. the browser is much smoother and rarely ever force closes. hooked up my keyboard and mouse, no issues at all. hdmi out to my 1080p tv. everything is working great. i will admit it does have a few bugs here and there but compared to 3.0.1 it is a very nice improvement. i've had far less issues. i'm even using the stock launcher because i can resize the widgets now. was using launcher pro previously. all in all, a great update. still waiting for my mom's iconia to say its ready to be updated to 3.1. got the 1.141 update last night.
btw, i've never rooted my iconia. these things are too new, it's not worth rooting right now because the development is so weak. i'll give it another 6 months when we start seeing some really nice custom ROM's from some of the amazing developers on xda.

I agree that development is weak, but I root for getting rid of ads and access to all folders (and a restart button on screen).

Don't get too excited. You can't root 3.2 yet.
I got the update this morning in Vancouver. If there is no root by the end of the weekend (I don't have my hopes up), then I'm downgrading. I need ad-hoc to work.
Got it last night in Nova Scotia.

Unfortunately I am not currently aware of a way to downgrade. trying to flash a lower version appears to leave the tablet unbootable. (otherwise I would be back on 3.1 until root for 3.2 appears)

Well hopefully someone will figure something out... otherwise its easier to upgrade keeping root than to upgrade and try and re-establish root.

Unfortunately it's too late for that for many of us...
When I upgraded I realized root may not work, but I always figured if it didn't I'd simply downgrade again and be ok... I never imagined that the downgrade wouldn't be possible either.
As my girlfriend said when I described it to her "who do they think they are? don't they know that you already paid for the device, it's not theirs anymore, why do they think they can still tell you what you can and can't do on it?" (Unfortunately I am not currently aware of any large technology company who believes that they actually sell you a device, they all think you merely rent it from them)

I'm in the same boat. Acer has always been pretty flexible, so I just assumed I'd be able to downgrade. Now I'm stuck.
This could likely be my last Acer product. Not that that carries any weight, considering how many returns they had on the initial run of the A500, which didn't appear to bother them that much. (Have you tried the new A500's, or the refurbs? The GPS actually works!)
I understand that they don't want us mucking around with these types of things, in order to keep themselves from getting flooded with warranty and service calls from the idiots who bricked their tablet, but they often adopt the wrong attitude. It's like some irrational need to police what people do with a product, after they bought and paid for it. I'm not sure why consumer electronics differ from any other purchased property (cars, houses, appliances, etc). I wish they would understand that they do not still own my tablet.
Then again, we did choose to install the update. It wasn't exactly forced on us. So maybe we're the idiots.

Every android device I had was not able to be downgraded. Not just acer. Ask the people who upgraded their EVO 4G to gingerbread. If your expecting to root you should always way until their is a rooted ROM available and never accept ota

Why is the US version always the last one to get the update? On .13 and none yet :-\

I am happy that the new update seems to have made things smoother, but I am still getting the odd crash from apps like Dolpin Browser which is highly annoying, especially when I am in the middle of typing somthing big and then it FC's on me and I lose everything.
was in update loop
Dunno if this happened to anyone else. The tablet kept downloading the update and failing. I downloaded 3.2 update at least 8 times. The solution was to reset the tablet and then apply the update.
I've read its likely due to incompatible apps.
I'm happily on 3.2 now.
Does someone have the link to Acer for this update? If so please post the link.
Thanks

No link, however a couple of us captured the update as it came in to our tablets, and have you can find the files here
A couple things.
I am still on 3.1 but this is because i patched for Netflix.
Now the device thinks it's a Xoom on 3.2 (which it is not, as we all know).
First question is has anyone tried Netflix with the update?
I'll search for it but does anyone have the original file that the netflix patch replaced?
I can't remember what it's called so it's difficult to search for it
Hmmm sounds like ill stay on 3.1
