Did you mean A500, if not where did you get an A501?
Try this:
Search the forum for 'IconiaRoot 1.2'
Works fine on HC 3.1 and no orientation BS to worry about. Also much faster and does include UNroot option.

Thanks a lot, I'll try it and give you the feedback.
No, it's A501.
I got it in my hand since the last friday.
It's not a unreleased product anymore.
I bought 3 A501.
Cheers

Sry but there is no 501....just A500.
You have three A500 units.

There is an A501

There is an A501 - it has a 3G radio. It was due out in Europe by the end of July. I
guess they kept thier promise. No A501 for the US yet, though

Wrong. Maybe you should look at Acer's product portfolio, hmm?

Thanks a lot!!!
It works perfectly!!!! hahahha
But my a501 cannot found the ad hoc hotspot.
I did the modification exactly following the instruction, but why it still doesn't show up the ad hoc hotspot???
Have any idea?
Cheers

Check youn permissions on the ad-hoc file or the program on the phone you are tethering to.u use wireless tether switched from barnacle. As it seems faster.but cost ten bucks
Guys check the web the 501 is available but I think limited areas

Thank you. At least YOUR post was helpful unlike FATmans there. I will try my other contact and get some information on it.

1. Did you make sure USB Debugging is turned on?
2. Did you make sure Loading from Unknown Sources is turned on?
3. Make sure when you run Gingerbreak, the tablet is in Portrait mode...Gingerbreak will crash if it is run in Landscape mode.
I had that issue last night rooting my replacement A500. I realized I forgot to turn on USB Debugging. If that's the case, turn on USB Debugging and restart the tablet, then run GingerBreak again.

Acer "launched" the A500, A501, A100 and A101 tablets all at the same time, at the various electronics shows around the world. All the news sites online carried news of all 4 models, and their website lists them as well, even in the support section (and the A100 series isn't even available yet).
There's no way an Acer employee wouldn't have known about it if they had anything at all to do with the mobile devices division.

hi there,
if you are still using stock rom on your a501, just dont flash any custom rom from dev section... u will lose 3g functions
but then i think u can help the dev by giving the dumping of your stock rom, maybe to help we a500 users get easier and better 3g

Yes I am sure I did what exactly they told on their articles.
Now I solved that problem with ICONIA Root,so Gingerbreak is crap...

Y'know.. It's REALLY impolite to call something which some guys worked really hard on, did everything they could to help a bunch of freeloaders set their tablets free and didn't ask for a DIME in recompense, a piece of crap.
How about you try to do better, hmm? And when you do (ha!), I'll call it a piece of crap and see how you like it.

Acer HC 3.2 really piss poor

I'm sure I'll hear differing opinions, but I see big show stoppers here. I've gone back to 3.1 already.
I've tried stock, custom, different kernels, and from what I can see it all points to that version of Android, not any particular customizations.
1. Dropped wifi connections - I'm not the only one
2. Something a bit more obscure:
The latest version of the email client does not allow you to set the port for your incoming mail server. While most folks wouldn't care or even notice, this is something that I require and has been an option available on 3.0 and 3.1.
3. Streaming Flash videos seem to just lock up on you at random times.
Realky piss poor job, Acer/Google! Ever hear of Quality Assurance, or are we your testers?

Two things:
1. Seeing that you have gone back to 3.1 indicates that you haven't used the ROM provided by Acer but by one of the developers here. So maybe the problems you are seeing with wifi might not be result of Acer/Google's work. Correct me if I'm wrong but the new recovery can't be downgraded (still).
2. Have you tried to set the port in the name of the server? Like mail.provider.com:25 ? I'm waiting for root for 3.2 before I update because after months of flashing my phone I came to the conclusion that stock is aways the best option when stability is a must. Maybe when Acer discontinues supporting the A500, custom ROMs will be the better option, but surely not now (in the mean time you have to be sure not to flash a unrootable recovery). Having said that, I don't know if setting the port in the server name would work but definitely worth a try.

What does recovery have to do with this?
Before writing my post, I did try a stock 3.2 from Acer. Nothing to do with custom or stock. I started with stock 3.0, just like most people here.
When I saw the port number issue, I went to Acer's servers, downloaded 3.2, and the it was, a missingport number inputbarea. Still there for outgoing servers.
I've been around the block a few times. I'm no newbie when it comes to technology, and I won't brag about what I do for a living.
As soon as you enter mail.somewhere.com:6799 or whatever your favorite port numer is, the Next button becoms greyed out. Just typing the colon after the server name does the trick, you don'even have to go as far as the port number. In the pervios versions of Email, there is an input box for the port number, it's gone missing.
The problem with wifi has been reported by users of 3.2 in general, meaning Asus and other brands as well. I did do some poking around on here on xda.

"My wifi is fine" - I hear that from a lot of people. Mine isn't. Ohters are complaining about this as well. Acer's support claims it's the router. Oh, come on, Acer. I have a couple of routers here, servicing FreeBSD systems, Mac OS X systems, iPhones, whatever a guest to my home might bring over, and gasp - Windows systems. It's not my router(s). And the fact that 3.0 and 3.1 work just fine, custom or stock, throws up a big red flag to me.
Emailing Acer support, or calling them for that matter, is the same as emailing or calling a brick wall.

The fact that you reverted back to 3.1 means you never had stock 3.2, but the buggy 3.2 that was made off the 501 3.2 with its problems.

I can second this: If you'd used 3.2 from Acer, you'd be stuck with it. Right now it locks you in and you can't downgrade. Really douche move from Acer, if you ask me. It's this kind of crap that you would expect from Mac.
As for your wifi issues, it might be a faulty unit like others have said, but I doubt it. I know the radio on mine is rather week (can't go more than 20 feet from the router). The GPS is also weak (only works on sunny days) with a low SNR even then. I suspect these two transmitters are underpowered on mine. I was an early adopter and I noticed that Acer had refurb units out only a few weeks after the initial release. This usually means they had many many returns. This is never a good sign.
The good news is that it is likely not a hardware thing in your case. If it worked better with 3.1, then you know that your transmitter is at least capable of a solid connection. If you don't mind losing root, try the OTA update. Keep in mind this is a one-way trip.
Otherwise, just stick with 3.1 until ICS comes out in a few months. 3.2 really is nothing spectacular; i wouldn't recommend upgrading unless it specifically fixes something you need.
Cheers,
-PW

Wifi Issues
As someone who has had the occasional wifi issues and been trying to hunt it down, I can say it almost always has to do with the AP, regardless of whether or not other devices have issues. I have about 8 different APs at my house that I have used to test across a wide variety of manufacturers. The biggest issues I have seen are tied to WPA2-PSK AES/TKIP support, and pre-N support. If the device is set to support both AES and TKIP I have seen issues. Set it to either one, it's fine. N has had major issues as well. Any AP I have tried that is Pre-N gives issues. Anything after the standard has been ratified has not had issue. It's not just A500 that I've noticed this behavior. I have a Moto Defy that acts the same way as well Smartbook. If you crank the support down to G only the issues disappears. Ironically the only device that I have had 0 issues with is my roommates Apple AP........go figure the irony on that.
---------- Post added at 09:18 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:16 AM ----------
Also as far as 3.2 goes.....I've noticed the only people that are getting the 3.2 update are the ones with Gen1 devices. I have a Gen2 and have seen nothing. Maybe there was a slight hardware revision?
I had really some problems after updating the device but after doing a factory reset all problems vanish.
There aren't different hardware gen versions by software update. The use of "gen" in the rom/update name appears to merely be some sort of codeword for acer and acer only.
Check out this post to see the original code lines for 3.1..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16061585&postcount=3
Updated it to reflect the various 3.2 roms that have popped to upgrade from 3.1. I still have not seen one for the US rom line that was up to Acer_A500_4.010.13_COM_GEN2.
Originally the US rom line was gen1 prior to 3.1.
If anyone was on 4.010.13 and got the update could you please post your software versions?
There is a version of 3.2 posted in the dev section that is the best bet for those wanting to try it out before a userland root exploit is figured out. It's version A500_4.010.41_7.006.01_COM_GEN1. The only thing done to this otherwise stock rom is root, custom recovery (CWM), busybox, and the new bootloader removed. This rom is ready to go and flashable from CWM which means no need to unroot and revert recoveries.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265847
We need to have a DEV work on the other codetrain versions that exist to have a similar rom posted for each section of the world.

No, I don't. That's my honest opinion and I stand by my words. The devs here do outstanding job considering they don't have the resources the manufacturers have. But at the end of the day, custom roms just lack proper testing. They do bring more features but if you read carefully what I have written in my post, I said they are inferior in terms of stability not features.
EDIT: If you have gone back to 3.1 you did NOT update with the stock ROM. Period. At best you updated with a near-stock ROM (with removed recovery, added superuser app, busybox and God knows what else) and in the process you should have wiped cache, etc. You are the only one who knows what you have done in the process and that's exactly why manufacturers void warranties on rooted/custom recovery devices. There are many with wifi problems you say, well there are also many that don't have them. The only way we could know if those problems are caused by Acer or by the users is to have someone that had stock unrooted 3.1 working who updated OTA with the stock 3.2 provided by Acer and started having wifi issues. Not someone who flashes every other day something cooked by anyone but Acer.

Bang Bang......you're dead!
Has anyone been experiencing force closes with 3.2? I cant play some games like Wind-Up Knight on my tablet.
The only force close I have had is the system settings about, as I have the APK that kills the telephony and phone APKS (my battery lasts for days and days now btw) if I reenable these then it does not force close. havent tried that particular game yet but when I first loaded 3.2 golf wouldnt work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the golf and now it works, Try it what could it hurt? also go into the apps and clear the cache from that particular app, then restart the tab and see if that works? I am no expert but at least here is a place to start...
I just sucked it up, did a backup, wiped, and reflashed. All is well now.

I am running the Prime 2.1.1 ROM and it's good. I have had trouble with the Revolution HD ROM (didn't restore apps automatically, Market crashes, some apps are shown as not compatible etc.). I will wait until the first ICS ROMs come out before I try anything new (e.g. the KRAKD ROM looks promising).
So maybe i play honeycomb and wait for the ICS roms to drop then cause that works

I have tried revolver, prime, and revolution HD for me revolution is the most stable and the battery is amazing on it. the only thing I don't like is how really stock it is. Revolver is really customizable rom you can do alot tweets but the battery drains fast. Well prime, I was getting alot of fc so I didn't play with it to much.

First off, make sure that you always make a backup of what you have working on the tablet. This will save you much frustration if something goes wrong. Nandroid backups are the ones that will restore a whole ROM for you. As for backing up apps with data, you can use Titanium Backup (requires root).
The two main firsts are that you should get it rooted (very easy now) and install CWM (Clockwork Recovery Mod). CWM will allow you to flash ROMs, make backups of the ROM itself and handle various memory functions.
Read through the Stickies in the Android Dev section, they will tell you all information you need to know.
As mentioned above, if you run into any kind of issue, before you post, use the search function and see if it is something that has been asked and answered before. If you are following the steps to whatever you are doing and you get stuck, chances are good someone else has done the same thing and gotten help with it.
Another thing to note is when you choose a ROM, look through its feature list, and if available, the bug list. Looking through both of those should aid you in deciding if that specific ROM or Kernel is something you want to use. If you get as far as flashing Kernels, make sure it is one that is compatible with the ROM you are using, otherwise the tablet probably won't boot and you'll have to flash a Kernel known to work with whichever ROM you chose.
Read thru the stickies above.
First thing you'll need to do is check the serial number on it and make sure you even have the choice of rooting it. AFAIK, most serials after the B60 series have a locked bootloader that hasn't been cracked yet. I hope I'm wrong, but I haven't read anything to the contrary yet.

You okay there Buckii?
Anyway, I would recommend getting the dock. Sometimes it is nice to have a physical keyboard, plus the additional battery adds hours of use time.

Thumbs keyboard is superior to them all I think anyway.
DO not auto update to 3.2 if you are thinking of rooting your tablet.
This will be needed to do backups and install the ad-hoc network tether fix.
Browse and read all the popular threads on this forum.before you mod anything.
Biggest tip of all ..Be nice to erica Renee its been told she is a bad chic.

Enjoy.

Wish I had read this before letting my brand new A500 auto update. I really need the ad hoc tethering ability. Am I out of luck? Any way to revert my version back to an earlier version which would allow ad hoc? Thanks for any help.
There is a thread in the dev area on how to revert back and install a rooted 3.2
Also info on applying the ad-hoc file to allow Iconia to connect to ad-hoc network devices such as cell phones.
I will be bad girl only when its fun for me.
thanks for the tip on the thumbs keyboard!

Use for a week or so before changing Rome. See how it is supposed to work, then you now have a references to go by.

Now there is some good advice.
Also, gives it a chance to see if there are any defects you need to return it for. Is much easier to return a "stock" tablet, compared to one that is fubarred due to messing up a custom rom flashing.
Technically, rooting a device voids it's warranty. Technically. That's why people try to revert back to stock before returning it due to defects.

Thanks so much. It seems there are several versions available. Which do you recommend? Or should I wait a few days since it seems a new ROM will be available. I really like how 3.2.1 OTA looks and works. But I really need Ad-Hoc wifi. Thanks and Merry Christmas.
Im using rom similar to this but with some changes to better suit me.that I added I cant share mine due to afraid of giving out my personal stuff

I have not had to downgrade .I waited until there was a rooted update.you can however try the new pda-net app in the market for tethering.
Use this method to update to 3.2.1, root and install cwm

Worked for me
Good luck...

Besides that he joined this site in June 2009.
Why?
Someone should make a sticky similar to this .Lots of bricked devices over and over
Can someone give me some icecream .. RIGHT NOW...
My best tip and advice i can give anyone is the fallowing..
BEFORE FLASHING HACKING OR CHANGING YOUR TABLET AT ALL... DO THE FALLOWING
1 Turn your iconia off and put it in the other room.Far away from you..
2 start with the general Forum on xda read every forum related to someone bricking and hacking there device..
3 read all the [email protected] forum threads ..
4 read EVERY FORUM THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD.. 3 TIMES !!!!!
5 GO BACK AND READ EVERYTHING IN THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD..
6 MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE DEVELOPERS AND SMART GUYS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER
7.. BE NICE TO ERICA.. GIGGLES..
8. Back up Back up AND BACK UP YOUR BACKUPS TO TWO OR MORE PLACES..
Now if you have completed all of the above.. Save your money up so that you have enough to replace your tablet . Do this in the event that something goes wrong.. It can happen to anyone who flashes a device..
Then Be nice To Erica Renee..
and good luck flashing.
one more then .. when you make a backup...
try restoring it.. before you flash your tablet.. lots of people have made backups that failed....
one more thing
BE NICE TO Erica Renee...
have a nice day and dont forget to Be Nice to Erica..Renee.. xoxoxo
Are people being mean to you or something? You really want this person to be nice to you

I think he means he got it a day early. I also got this tablet for Christmas. But I'm not interested in rooting mine. Just interested in the stock experience of Honeycomb.

New to the Motorola Xoom... Very excited!

I just purchased a Motorola Xoom. I figured as everything I have read, it is the best tablet thus far, I should dive in. I started with a dell streak 5" phone/tablet, and then graduated to a Dell Streak 7" tablet, but the random reboots were killing me, not to mention Dells lack of support (if there ever really was some in the first place.
I've read about the new tegra quad core devices coming out soon, but figured it would be a year or so after they are introduced before the capabilities of that tablet could be fully utilized, and seeing the pages upon pages of support for an already well established device, the Xoom, here I am joining your ranks.
Tracking shows it is out for delivery so I'm giddy with excitement! I'm a true tech-hound, so I am pretty sure most of you understand what I'm saying.
Any suggestions right off the bat? I'd hate to dive in like every other tablet I've used and overlook something.
I also ordered the HD speaker dock. any thoughts on that as well?

Great choice and welcome! I love the Xoom and recommend you get a Team EOS ROM right away. If you're a flashoholic then grab the nightlies if not I would go with the 1.0. Don't you dare use Honeycomb!
I think the HD dock is awesome and has great quality and volume. Use it to watch movies and listen to music quite a bit.

The first thiing you will do upon opening it and connecting via WiFi will be the Android Honeycomb upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. Go ahead and update that and then spend a couple of weeks with it, reading about the Xoom and its capabilities and customize it. Everything you need to know can be found right here. Enjoy your new Xoom!

Just got my tablet, and had to apply two different updates to it. after the 2d update & reboot, I'm showing:
Model Number: MZ604
Android version: 3.2
Firmware configuration version: GAS_ASIA_UCAHUBLWFRTIRD_P009
Kernal version: 2.6.36.3-00042-g3cta41e [email protected]#1
Build number: h.6.6-23
So, Amazon sold me an asian tablet that doesn't register for the ICS update? Am I reading this correctly?

Wow, I am not sure but rest easy, the people in here will help you out. Let a few hours go by and the forum will read your post and help out. Someone will offer better advise than I can give you. If you plan to root your Xoom, it won't matter what version you have because all wifi-only Xooms have the same hardware. They are all wingray devices as far as I know, and can flash the Team EOS ICS wingray rom.
Tried this, but I can't even get clock work mod to install. I keep getting an error message saying device is still locked... looks like I have alot of reading to do to figure this out. I",m very familiar with fastboot & CWM, but a new device is a.always a news device. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

You would have to do unlock first...
To do this you would need the fastboot drivers from motodev (don't just install drivers from moto, you need the motodev ones).
After you have the drivers and adb setup, then you can boot your device to the bootloader using adb reboot bootloader
then after your device entered the bootloader and your computer registered it, then type fastboot oem unlock on the adb
then follow on screen instructions on your tablet to get it unlocked.
Once unlocked you are ready to flash the trivial stuff.
I unlocked, installed CWM and rooted my WiFi Xoom using this tutorial. Can highly recommend it.
that´s true,
i unlocked my new xoom with universal root -> dev section
flashed CWM - and then flashed a lot of nightly´s
now i am on EOS 1.0 and it rocks!
Hooray! I found a post that explains how to change the OS to a US version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166106&highlight=mz604+unlock
I researched how to unlock the bootloader, and once done, I followed these instructions. It put me back to the original honeycomb, and then after 4 updates, I am now on the stock version of ICS.
I'm very excited!
I'm going to play with this to get used to it, but everywhere i read it seems that the ROM Team Eos ICS 1.0.0, is the way to go.
Can anyone tell me why?

EOS ICS Rom 1.0.0 is very stable and very full-featured. You will be blown away.
guys one question but it´s a little off topic:
would you recommend to buy the xoom or wait for the new quadcore tablets ( like asus or huawei ).
I mean the xoom is already one year old and costs about 380€ for the 3g version...
thanks in advance!

I thought about this exact situation extensively before I bought my Xoom (wingray) two weeks ago. My final selling point is that the Xoom is a year old, so all of the bugs have been worked out, multiple stable working ROM's are available, and it is updated with ICS! I realize there are newer tablets out there, with quad core processors, and I'm sure they are fantastic! But the Xoom is fantastic in & of itself! I may upgrade in another year or two, but the Xoom is an incredible device and I've tried multiple tablets, from the dell streak 5, 7 & iPad 2 to the kindle fire, and I love my xoom the most!
