[Q] Help with Focus Booting Issue. - Focus General

I have a developer unlocked Focus that is currently running 7004. It was dropped in water and I assumed it did not work as all it would give on boot is the connect to PC icon.
Earlier today I was thinking "Hey I should get a second battery" Well I remembered that other 'broken' Focus and I plugged it in. Mistakenly I was holding the camera button as it took a picture and brought me to the camera screen. This allowed me to exit and browse through the phone as normal. Everything worked as normal (Aside from there being no SIM) I could even browse the marketplace.
I decided to test the apps to see if they'd work first Facebook (no good couldn't update stuff even though I was on WiFi) and twitter. After writing a tweet the phone locked up and reverted to the connect to PC screen. Now the hardware buttons do not respond (Back, Home, Search, Camera will focus but won't take picture)
Short version:Now whenever I boot up it goes to the connect to PC screen. If I connect the phone to a PC it just keeps rebooting itself. The hardware buttons do not respond if I do the reset command. (Back, Home, Search, Camera will focus but won't take picture)
Question: Is it possible to fix this issue of infinite boot and have a normal phone again?

If the hardware hasn't been affected you can try a reflash with one of these ROMs. If you can still do that. Plus a hard reset.
From what you have described, I can't tell for sure what is wrong (soft, hard or both). Hopefully none.
The fact that the phone worked, suggests that part of the software is working. The hardware seems ok, so if you're lucky enough the phone might work with a reflash.
What I recommend, before you reflash, considering it was dropped in water, is make really sure it's dry. I hope you removed the battery quick enough as that usually damages the phone if left in, afterwards.
I've heard various methods, and I know 2 that work:
- remove the battery and the cover and find a warm/hotter and dry place (not too hot) and put the phone there, over a towel and in between the phone and the towel, kitchen towel. The idea is to heat the phone slightly. DO NOT use a microwave or a blow dryer or fire. A good example is over an electric blanket, at lowest power (+towel, +paper towel).
- dry rice. immerse the phone completely in dry rice (batt/cover removed) and leave for 24h

So when I flash the device it comes up with a connect to PC screen. However the flash does complete the entire process. Zune then starts running but says restoration fails.
EDIT: I don't think this phone is good to work anymore.

Did you re-flash the firmware or you only tried to restore from Zune?
The flash process doesn't involve Zune...

I reflashed the phone and then it reboots itself. First with the screen with the red arrow. Which is supposed to happen. Then it reboots itself again and Zune boots up, giving me that error. It then returns to the connect to PC screen once again no matter how many times it is rebooted.
EDIT: Would it matter which AT&T ROM I used to flash it with?

Hmmm.
Here's an Omnia 7 guide, but should apply to the Focus as well (evidently, with Focus ROM/binaries from Samsung-i917-Focus-firmware-UCJK2-ATT-USA.exe)
I suppose you followed it. If that's the case then your hw might be affected...

Yeah I followed that exactly. I'm guessing the hardware is affected and can't be used anymore. Guess the one time I used it was a fluke. XD Oh well. So much for having two Samsung Focuses.

I think you should ask Heathcliff74 (PM him), maybe the problem is that one of the steps just doesn't complete and maybe there's a way to force that, or there might be more you can try.

MDA meets its end?

Today while riding in my car I was texting my friends. Then my phone froze up (not the first time), so I nonchalantly hit the soft reset button and waited. Except my phone never booted up, it froze on the WINDOWS MOBILE 6.0 screen, and has been there the rest of the day. I was running the TNT1437 Touch ROM on my MDA at the time, I do not know whether this was a hardware or software problem. Please repost with any advice or diagnosis you may have.
Try out Hard Reset, although, you'll loose all of your settings and personal data, but it might start to work, otherwise, get into Bootloaders (multicolor screen) and flash a new rom.It might be corruption of system files or Extended_Rom.Check the battery status,it must be fully charged.
Thats what I was planning on doing (flashing a new ROM), but i could not get activesync to make a connection because my phone will never fully boot up. How do you do a hard reset. And how do you enter bootloaders?
to enter bootloader you have to turn your phone off...them keep the connections button camera button and dialogue button and reset the device with the stylus...(both side bottons and camera)
Thanks for the help guys! I put it in bootloader and flashed a new ROM and now it works fine. I found this article that helped me, hopefully it will help anyother of you witht he same problem!
"When upgrading the ROM on the HTC Wizard, there is always a slight chance that the upgrade proces fails, leaving you with a device that won't fully boot. When that happens, people often fear that they turned their device into a useless brick. This is most often not the case.
The regular upgrade proces requires an working ActiveSync connection. When the upgrade proces failes and your device won't fully boot, you won't be able to set up the working ActiveSync connection, which could lead you to believe that there is no way to revive your device. Well, you can revive your device by putting it into the boot loader mode. Stephen writes:
Quote:
After researching the issue the only way to get around the problem was to put the unit in bootloader mode, then retrying the upgrade. All HTC devices have this mode and the Wizard is no exception.
To place the unit in bootloader mode, perform a soft reset, when the screen goes blank hold the camera button until a multi colored screen comes up [...]
When the unit is connected, USB is displayed at the bottom left.
Once in bootloader mode you can connect the unit via USB to your PC"

We started to get on the plane for Key West. Then you pulled me to the next gate destined for Honolulu. I made some comment about 5-0 and you gave me the look, that look. At that point I knew this wasn’t going to be a trip to visit Jack Lord shower sex tourist traps. We got on the plane and arrived dog tired. You then informed me that the last time you were in Hawaii someone told you about a drop off service which sounded good to me. We went to a marina and a launch took us to a small island and the captain said he would be back in three days and the island was ours.

HELLO, CAN WE BAN THIS TARD???
THIS PERSON IS A SERIAL THREAD-JACKER WHO POSTS TOTAL SH*T!!!

I think I bricked it...

Before I start I know how touchy people are about searching forums and the wiki etc... but I already have!
Ok so, I tried to flash a new ROM to my phone last night, I have done it before without problems however this time I was having trouble getting the phone to connect to my laptop (I run Windows 7). Both USPL and HSPL wouldn't work (in fact active sync wouldn't even recognise it).
So I went to bed, woke up and... My phone didn't work at all
I spent ages trying to get it too work, I tried putting it into bootloader, but nothing happened, I tried getting it to Hard reset, but nothing happened. (By nothing happens i mean the screen doesn't turn on).
The only sign of life i get from it is the little vibration that usually occurs after the 'smart mobility' screen appears. Except this is delayed by about 10 seconds from after pressing the Power button.
The delay makes me think that there is something else wrong with the phone other then the screen...
Please help!!
Oh and I am sorry for the essay... I only just realised how long and rambling it is haaa.
UPDATE: right it just connected to activesync but still nothing on the screen, is there any way of checking for definite that the screen is broke before I fork out for a new one? There is astill the massive delay between turning the phone on and getting the little vibration...
Try removing battery overnight, then re-inserting. Then try to get to bootloader or hard reset
how exactly did you manage to brick it? did you flash the rom in question with uspl, or do u generally have hard spl installed? i dont know but it looks like the bootloader is somehow broken ...
Ok I will try doing that, thank you for helping
And no, I didnt get as far as flashing the ROM because active sync never recognised the phone in Bootlaoder. I usually use USPL.
Did you fix it? and if so how?
I have very similar issues with my HD right now. Screen went black, bought a new LCD and still the same problem. Oddly enough the only way I can get the screen to come on is to take the battery out and set both battery and phone body in my window sill for half an hour or so. It is cold here right now and they are both pretty cool to the touch when I take them out. Put it back together and tada! Screen comes on. I dunno what the deal is also, don't know if its the battery or phone being cold that makes it work again??? I am going to try and figure it out.. Try it on yours it may help

please help me, my phone is unusable

my focus has gone crazy. it keeps beeping like i received a text message. i try to lock the screen and it goes black for 5 seconds, then immediately lights up and dings like i have a text message. from there it dings constantly. there are no pauses, just ding, ding, ding, ding. you get the picture.
battery drains within an hour due to this. i've reseated the battery, restarted, even did the full reset. nothing has changed. i did the nodo update manually before it became available via the xda update about 6 weeks ago.
does anyone know what's going on....has this ever happened to anyone before? i bought the phone in november...can i warranty it or go to att and switch out?
First thing, you have a couple of options. Any product that you buy in an att store has a warranty on it for a year: phones, cases, chargers, anything. Second thing, I can't say that I have or have heard many instances of whats going on with your phone. The easiest way to deal with this is to go to att tell them whats happeneing and tell them you would like a new phone. The other option is to do another full recovery but do it with the diagnosis app; the diagnosis codes are located in the thread in the general section of the focus forum. Another option is to use one of the official roms from the development section and reflash the rom. So, all in all I think you might of had a faulty update manually updating to nodo. Also, I would try updating through zune the official att/micorsoft nodo. The last thing I assume your focus was unlocked. If you flash the official rom from the development section it flashes, I think, to 7004 version and you can unlock your phone again, prevent the unlock to nodo, so on and so on. Good luck

okay so the problem now is that the device is not being recognized via the usb port. it reads "one of the devices connected via usb has malfunctioned and is not recognized." does anyone know what is going on???
i think before i did a full reset on the phone, it was programmed to tether. when i reset it, would it revert back to tethering or sync with zune? either way it has never been showing as malfunctioning in windows, so something is definitely wrong. should i do a complete reset using the diagnosis app? i don't know how to do that, but might it help?
does anyone know why i am getting "device has malfunctioned" warning?

Your going to need to put it in download mode and reflash the original firmware you can do that and download all the tools in this thread.

And if that doesn't work (might not, considering the USB issue) you will have to go warranty...
okay thanks for the help. i decided to go back to ATT and they replaced it for no charge. it was an easy fix, BUT i tried to buy a new micro sd card from microcenter, and the phone will not recognize it at all. is this pretty normal to happen?
ATT put the memory card from the old phone into the new phone without my permission. obviously it did not work, but i'm wondering if them putting it in the new phone at all might cause the memory slot to go awry and not read any new card?
You have to do a hard reset to initialize the sd card. Once you do this, it's not removable
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
so i turn the phone off, put the card in, turn the phone on and go into settings and do a hard reset, and then it should be good to go?

No, turn on the phone with the 3 buttons method, or read here about all the methods:
With the phone off, hold down the Power button, volume down button, and camera button and when the screen turns on, release power button, then the other 2.
You will be asked to press Win to continue, twice (hard reset).

[Q] HD2 won't turn on — short vibration and black screen

Hi everyone,
I would really appreciate it if you could give me an advice for my TMOUS HD2 P81120, that won't turn on.
I bought it with some firmware problems, spent plenty of time flashing it and finally managed to install a stock ROM from SDCARD using a fridge (it couldn't install w/o such cooling).
After that, it booted to white splashscreen with pink logo (smth like "Bringing happinness", don't remember the text) and stuck on it. I rebooted, flashed HSPL 2.08 successfully.
After that the device won't turn on at all. When I hold the Power button, all I get a barely sensible short vibration, but the screen stays completely black, no signs of life. I kept it on AC charger overnight — nothing has changed. When I hook it to the charger w/o the battery, and put the battery in, HD2 powers on itself (same short vibration, no other signs of life). Tried removing the sdcard, different combinations of power-ons, still nothing. Tried freezing it again for 5-10 mins — still no luck.
Please let me know what else I can try.
and one more thing — when I plug the USB, the PC doesn't detect any device.
It seems that a JTAG is my last resort, still I'm not sure I can find the hardware for that.

the problem is that your HD2 are overheating so the only thing thats left in your case is to replace motherboard

Good point!
Make sure that none of the three pins on the phone that touch the battery are bent. One of the causes of constant reboot is when one of those pins are not touching the battery. Please let me know if it worked for you...

That were definitely not the battery pins.
If anyone cares - here's how it ended (or not yet )
I found a JTAG service in my city, they wanted 50$ to restore the device to a working condition. I agreed, they took the phone. After that they've called me and said they have restored the bootloader, but can't make HD2 actually boot (they flashed stock ROM directly through JTAG, but it always got stuck on "Stick Together Screen". Now I understand I have probably flashed the wrong rom/radio — that's what has bricked it. I paid them 7$ for "diagnostics" and got back a phone with a working bootloader.
After that, I used the "fridge" method to flash latest radio for HD2 and some custom Win6.5.3 ROM (10 mins of fridge before each step). Then I cooled it again and put the cold phone on a frozen chicken (still laughing on that). Guess what — it booted into WM6.5, I even managed to make a call, though it rebooted in 3-5 mins. Overheating problems confirmed, at least it's not a complete brick.
What I've done now is found a guy that will try to "reball" the CPU's BGA - sort of "reheat" the chip to get a firm contact of it with the motherboard, and solve the heat problems. He'll call me today and let me know how it went — i'll update this topic.
As a conclusion, I can only say: "Check three times what you're flashing before you actually are flashing". Otherwise, JTAG is a wonderful "resurrection" solution, although a bit pricey (my case is pure luck).

TMobile S8 works fine, except the screen won't turn on

My brothers TMobile S8 screen randomly stopped working. It has no signs of damage anywhere as well. Weirdly, I managed to get the screen to go on one time by pressing some button combos to try to follow a guide to get it into recovery to factory reset it. Upon the phone booting, the battery had 3% and when I went to show him, it was dead. Now after letting it charge, the screen does not work once again and I can't seem to get it to come on in the same way it did before, the bright blue recovery screen.
Is there any software I can use to just attach the phone to it and factory reset it? I mean, I've seen bad phone screens before that have still had images show up on them, even if heavily damaged physically or it no longer responding to touch and showing dim lights. But this one simply doesn't turn on, except the one random time it did, and it was perfectly fine, showed no sign of damage. Any thoughts would be greatly helpful
Is the battery known to be good?
If not replace it. The system will not boot if there's not enough current. It takes a fair amount of power to boot up. A charger can't provide enough to do so...
It boots up fine, I can hear the initial TMobile boot audio as well as the notification sound the phone makes when it gets to the lock screen. I also had it stop charging @80% not too long after buying the phone on release, with some custom ROM I installed. Ofc its a possibility its battery related, since I can't see anything on it, but it was taken care than the average person I am sure
With a custom rom all bets are off. Makes troubleshooting much harder. Possible rootkit.
Firmware and malware aside if it's booting but no display, possible loose ribbon connector, failed display or mobo. That's assuming the battery is good...
Well I did disable/uninstall Superuser from the phone, and I used it for a couple years before giving it to my brother to use. That is a good point about the cable, I will search for images, maybe I can squeeze a few spots to just see what happens

Sometimes just reseting a connector is all it takes. Those are low voltage lines and a perfect contact is needed.
If the battery is more then 2-3 yo it's probably at the end of its usable service life.
Thanks for the input, I will open it up if nothing else works and I will report back if it helps
