Hi guys, just got me a Droid X today, this is my first Android device, I previously had a Windows Mobile smartphone.
Glad to have you here. If you plan on going on to forums there are a few apps you should get. Try droid forum app and droid x forum app. Those will keep you in to loop on everything. So are you on gingerbread yet ? Do you plan on rooting?.

Thank you, i've looked in the Droid X forums before, I don't exactly remember if I went to the Droid forum before though. I'll get them. I'll eventually root but I have to learn how to. My old Dash 3g had a custom rom on it, and I flashed a custom rom on my fathers Dash, it's a better phone with it. I'm still on 2.2.
Welcome. And do not take the ota to gingerbread, install a pre-rooted version your self. That is the only way to maintain root access on GB...

Yeah, if you want Gingerbread and Root then follow the instructions on the thread below. It's easy and it works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1139865
I rooted my phone today, and right now i'm running Cyanogen 7(pre-release candidate?). I might see about getting this rooted Gingerbread.
when i got my dx a week or so ago i thought ill try this stock gb.... oh what a waste of time. cm nightlies are the best out there now

Is it me or does my touchscreen seem like it's not as responsive as it should be in the app menu?(i'm on Cyanogen 7 Nightly 23 if i'm not mistaken) I'm back on Cyanogen but i'm going to go back to the rooted GB and see if it acts different. I don't know if it's something I should do, but in the app menu on my sisters EVO seems smoother and acts more responsive, and its harder to make a mistake opening an app.
i believe the last nightly should resolve this

Hey guys, the fun with my Eris was fun while it lasted despite the bugs. slowness, freezes, trackball stopped working etc. Plus i really missed having a physical keyboard. So I ended up falling and cracking my Eris screen which really pissed me off. I called verizon cancelation department multiple times threatening to go to sprint and get the HTC Evo for 200 bucks from raido shack, it took 3 seperate calls and 2 different supervisors and finally they gave the option of any android phone they have available at the new customer rate (so DroidX, Droid2, Droid Incredible0 for 199.99 minus 100. So I went with the the Droid2 not realizing its not rooted yet, and doesnt look like it will be easily rooted. So should I keep the Droid2 which i REALLY want cause of the the physical keyboard and Froyo2.2 that isnt hacked together like it is on the Eris, and real Flash 10.1, or should i cancel and go with the DroidX. My guess is the Droid2 will be rooted and we will be able to put custom roms on soon, is this true or just a pipe dream.
Any real decent well thought out feedback would be appreciated.
droid x may be rooted but it dosen't have custom roms yet...
Well I got my Droid2 via FedEx today and I really don't care that the phone isn't rooted, this phone frickin' rocks.
Agreed. I had to exchange my LG Ally out to something faster. And I am glad I did go to the Droid 2. Its really fast.
I just upgraded my eris to a droid 2 and the droid 2 is incredible!!!
I've used the droid x a few times and the droid incredible a few more times and the droid 2 just blows them out of the water!
Also I love the new keyboard and if you use launcher-pro (with the new update) the phone feels even faster+ you still get the cool ninja-blur widgets without the annoying launcher.
it's just an awesome phone.
I don't want to be a party pooper but I was tired of the buggy Eris as well. I rooted, installed a fantastic froyo rom, and am completely satisfied now. Fast, stable and badass! I wouldn't say no if someone gave me a Droid X/2 but I certainly will not be pushing for one.

Well Veri$on is sending me a Droid2 because I have had 4....let me count them...1...2...3..4....phones. (I wanted a Droid X but no dice)
I have been reading about how to root and install Bootstrap Recovery. Can someone guide me to a FAQ and suggest a good ROM? I know that the Droid2 comes with Froyo 2.2, and I read that there is a 2.3 update for the Droid X. Is there one for the D2?
I have rooted my old Eris but it seems to me that the D2 is a little bit complicated.
Thanks!
2.3 was the Motorola version, not the android version.

Thanks....Well I am getting A Motorola D2......??? LOL
I know this is probably a newb question and since the method isn't posted here it's probably a no answer, but google only turned up vague references, no clear yes or no answers.

isn't any one click way right now for the droid 2 as far as i know.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782556
going to have a to go a little longer route, not too bad though. Back when i first rooted my droid incredible i had, it took me over 3 hours of restarting the phone and pulling the sd card hoping i would get lucky with the luck root method you had to use lol.
I don't mind doing it the long way just don't have internet at home right now outside of using easy tether on ubuntu. Going to take it to my friends house tomorrow and do all the work there.

Perfect! Go get the linux one-step. The zip is 1.1 mb. Android-sdk is 20mb. Update for the 2.2 platform is maybe a handful. And you are ready to go!
I am not exactly an expert on this but from all the Android phones I have had and rooted, the HTC and Motorola phones are completely different in terms of kernels and implementation. Most of these universal root applications are made for HTC based phones. Make sure your Droid 2 is one of the supported phones. Just my $.02.

Thanks for making your first post in a thread thats over 3 months old
And there is a one step root method for the Droid2 now its call Z4root
My buddy that I've know for years is with Verizon and is due for an upgrade. This guy is a computer nut that loves to hack, tweak, customize etc. My nephew has a DX an absolutely loves it. My friend has never had an android phone and asked me to point him in the right direction.... I told him to get the DX. I'm going to help him root it and flash roms..... I have an evo and know it inside out and have flashed everything under the sun. When he does get it what custom rom do you suggest that has plenty of themes and bells and whistles? My nephew suggested Rubix and I'm not familiar with ANY of the DX roms. I want to start my friend on the right foot with android and have a few roms ready to flash for him so he loves the android community as much as I do. So if anyone could let me know what the top 5 roms to flash that would be awesome. Thanks in advance and bababooey to you all

Apex 1.4.1
Gummyjar 2.5
Rubix 1.9.7
Fission
Liberty 1.5
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
As far as themes.. the two that I mainly use are ...
NexTheme and UD (Ultimate Droid)
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Apex1.4.1 and liberty are tops
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Rubix Focused 1.9.7 is truly the fastest rom in terms of performance. Also the battery life is bar none. I use an extended battery and with normal use (not in my hand every minute) I have no problem getting two days on a charge. If you want a few extra features in an easy to use toolbox app than Liberty 1.5 is a great rom as well. I switch between the two whenever I'm bored and want a change. These are the only two roms worth a mention in my opinion if removing the blur and bloat is your intent.
This all depends on what you what you are looking for. I would suggest that you spend some time reading over the threads in Forum Droid X Android Development:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=691
I have only used two ROMs but did a lot of research on the most popular.
I am currently using Liberty 1.5 and I am loving it. It's Liberty ToolBox allows some heavy, yet easy, customization.
Yeah he's the kind of Guy that will be a flashaholic. I know I'm flashing new roms a few times a week on my Evo and I'm sure he'll be the same. Just wondering if the dx will keep him flashing.

I've been researching before I flash a room. I'm rooted and ready, but I read on people feed back. so far i'm leaning towards apex. but I JUST found Liberty 5. so i'm still debating.

After much gnashing of teeth and unbelievably patient assistance I upgraded to a stock rooted GB.
I love it. I admit it...I was wrong:GB is THAT MUCH better than froyo.
So...
Is there any reason to bare the slings and arrows of outrageous sbf-ing to pop up to 595 or 6 or 1?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
I was on .588 for a few minutes today from .340 and after upgrading to .595 it seemed a bit snappier. During my time on .588 the sync icon would not go away on my taskbar and the lockscreen took a few seconds to unlock. I'd say the upgrade to .595 is worth it just because you're set to get the OTA from it.

You shouldn't need to sbf at all to go from .588 to .595.
So I'm hearing that of the various 59x versions its 59FIVE that I wanna move to for compatibility with an OTA upgrade ? And there's a flash method via droid2 bootloader?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA Premium App
No... You will need to be stock froyo in order to receive ota according to p3droid
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I would stay with .588. I have heard it is a little harder than sbfing back to froyo. Also the .596 ota is coming out soon and it looks like the bootloader is changing. Once you make the switch to it there will be no way back to froyo. And currently there is no root for .596. I know I can easily sbf back to froyo from .588 so when a rooted version of the ota is released then I will make the next switch. If you are stable and happy stay where you are. If there are a few bugs that are bothering you. You might think about going to .595. Just read about getting back to froyo if you choose that route.

I was on. 595 for around ten minutes before I bootlooped my phone and the linux sbf worked like a charm.
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
Would be nice if the new bootloader would be unencrypted...but that'll only happen in my dreams.

I am staying with the apex beta on 591 because it is aosp based and there is no bloatware to slow down my phone. I will update when the roms update.
i see no reason to switch as you cannot switch back to froyo.... not that i have any intention of going back I just have no desire to switch to the new version until a deodexed + rooted version slides out... i think its silly to even consider atm but thats just my opinion.
if you want OTA fine, but this is XDA... i thought we were all here because we DIDNT want the easy way.
I am more-or-less stable and happy on 588. So I'll just sit tight . But when the OTA upgrade becomes available from Moto Ill have to be back on Froyo ? Or is the jury still out on this?
Thx for getting back

The problem as I understand it is that Verizon wants that bloatware on there, it's a revenue stream for them. Especially the Verizon app store - pops up on my screen every time I plug my phone into my computer.
I have read that in the new Gingerbread release, it will be the first icon in the tray because the icons will no longer be in alphabetical order. That will make finding the correct icons so much easier in the menu.
I can't wait.
So Buttes says 595 will ota to 596, but owenbeales reports thar p3droid says unrooted froyo s necessary to OTA .... Anybody got clarification ?
Also...any opinions on ota596 with bloatware performance compared to the previously released 59x rooted stocks?

I booted up my DINC for the first time in over a year today! I kind of miss it. Now I have an S3.
It is on Cyanogenmod 7, and I would like to wipe it and have it as a webcam for my dog while I'm at work all day, and she's home alone. I thought it would be a fun and silly project, and put my old phone to good use. I was planning on using Skype with security settings, but it's not compatible with this version.
Can anyone recommend the best simple updated ROM for it? I used to change the ROM about once a month, so I'm pretty experienced at flashing, but I haven't done it (on this phone) in so long that I'm a little behind the times!
Thanks
I would suggest Tiny's CM 10.1. I'm about to flash it and in my experience, his work is pretty great.
