Just wondering if the Epic can be used on MetroPCS like the Evo can. I recently sold my Captivate for an Evo, and I hate to say it, but I think I liked the Captivate more. Better screen and better processor is hard to downgrade from
If it's possible to flash the Epic to Metro, I would pick it up in a second.
I haven't found any search results on Google or here, so I figured there was no harm in asking.
Thanks in advance for any help or answers you might have.
From what I've read, slim to none. At least, if you plan to use the internet for anything besides web browsing with the stock browser (ie, forget anything that accesses the internet directly within an app).
The problems:
1. MetroPCS uses proxies for everything.
2. Android proxy support sucks. No, wait... that's not strong enough. Android proxy support sucks monkey balls. In theory, you might be able to build your own kernel that includes iptables support and use iptables with some handwritten helper apps to deal with them... but you'll basically be trailblazing virgin territory, and mostly on your own. Your phone is unlikely to ever work properly. Android's crude proxy support only (kind of) works with the built-in browser. This isn't kiddie stuff. This isn't even "L33t" stuff. If you're a true Linux God who works for Metro, chills with Linus once or twice a year, and has access to Metro's internal documentation (or possibly the guy who created Cyanogen, with a close friend who works for Metro), you MIGHT get it to work... eventually. Nobody less is likely to ever get an Epic to work properly on Metro.
3. Android depends on Sprint for things like network-based location service. Guess what isn't going to work on MetroPCS?
4. Did I mention that Metro is 1xRTT, and the one place where they have 4G (Las Vegas) uses LTE, which isn't compatible with the Epic?
Really, if you add up what it would cost to buy an unsubsidized Epic and 24 months of service with MetroPCS, and compare it to the cost of buying an Epic with a 24 month Sprint contract and 24 months of Sprint, it's insane to even contemplate trying to use the Epic with MetroPCS. The only reason to ever use a Sprint Android phone on Metro is if you have an old one that you'd just chuck into a drawer, and would rather give it to a needy friend or family member with MetroPCS. Buying Sprint's most expensive phone at full retail to use on Metro would be insane.
(By the way, I know this because I *was* going to give my old Hero to a needy friend with Metro).
If the evo can gain access then most likely the epic can. I'm just making this broad assumptions considering the run the same operating system with mostly all the same functions.

Maybe you can use the Epic on Boost Mobile and what are the limitations with Boost Mobile besides 4G?
From what I remember when was with Metro (had a Touch Pro), Howard Forums are where a lot of their modding community hangs out. At least that was where all the work/discussion seemed to be going on back then. A simply google search should show the way.
The keys are internet & MMS. Internet tends to be the first thing to get unlocked, but without that MMS is hopeless. Even then MMS isn't always possible, depends a lot on the phone. In the past HTC phones were very easy to make fully function, with Samsung & LG phones being rather difficult. Also keep in mind that, as much as Metro used it as a marketing ploy, they really don't like the flashed phones ideas. They've already nearly disabled all flashed phones once by changing the passwords needed to access the web proxies.

native sprint coverage only, no roaming.
for some this may be good, for others it may be a dealbreaker.
to make mms work, you need to simply alter the mmsc URL in the ##DATA# > MSL menu and change it from Sprint's to boost's
changing the MMS url is easy for boost..same w/ making internet work... Samsung phones are CAKE to put on boost FWIW
epic 4g will only run 3g on metropcs
i have my epic 4g running on metropcs at 3g speed but i realy want to run at 4g lte speed i had my friend flash this phone for me but he said the metro 4g is a waste of time as it is not good i think there is no flash available yet for the 4glte
i am trying to find out i think the main problem is there is no routing table for metro pcs 4g lte any how if anyone knows how to modify the flash to get the 4g lte running please let me know thanks in advance i will copy my rom an post it later here if anyone wants it i will of course have to edit my log in and stuff but i am hopeing someone here already has figured out the solution

Uhhh...no. The Epic has no LTE capability. Only WiMax chipset.
The epic doesn't have an lte radio, that's why it doesn't work.
If you got 3g working and mms, then its practically runnin as well as it could be on metro

Even if you could get all the 3G services working properly, you could never use it as a 4G phone on MetroPCS. Epic is WiMax, Metro is LTE.
Trust me, you want the 4G. Now this is my opinion only so take it for what it is worth. From what I have seen of the existing Metro 3G network it sucks plain and simple, not just for data, but voice services as well. I have tested out the 4G network a bit in South Florida though and am duly impressed. Speed was very good, and even though I don't believe 4G is used for voice services yet, the phone I saw still had much better call performance (most notably actually receiving incoming calls).
I just want to make sure before I buy this phone that it will work on Simple Mobile at 3G speeds at the very least... HSPA+ maybe in the future?
I dont want to get it if it wont work since I dont want to be on slow EDGE for ATT and dont want to pay a premium if I am going to use TMOBILE service anyways.

Simple Mobile is intriguingly priced.
The Nexus One will never work on the HSPA+ network any faster than the regular HSPA network; the hardware isn't HSPA+ compatible.

if your phone providers works on 900/1700/2100 then it will work for you, else no
Simple Mobile is a T-Mobile reseller so yes it will work.
Since it is a Tmobile phone it seems like 3G should be good.. how about HSPA+???
I know the Mytouch4G is good and the G2 but nowhere does it say on the NExus S it is HSPA+.... anyone know if that will work at the SUPER FASTER SPEEDS?

HSPA maxes out at 7.2mbs, HSPA+ at ~22mbs but the MT4G/G2 max at ~14.4mbs if i recall correctly.
On average, I see around 2.5mbs to 3.8mbs on my Nexus which was about the same as I was seeing on my MT4G oddly enough. The G2 was getting 4-8mbs

Yep, same here. My Nexus One barely pulled >1mbs. Everyone hails that phone as the greatest thing since sliced bread, and don't get me wrong it was pretty damn great, but it had several flaws too such as the poor 3G reception I'm citing here.
Simple mobile gets t-mobile speed. I am proof that this work. Everything works except 4g since nexus s doesn't have that but I get amazing 3g speed.

I would be happy with a consistent 3.0mb. within a span of 3 miles I can go from 5mb to less than 1mb and lots of areas still are edge
last time i did a speed test maxed out at 2.8 Mbps down on Wind Mobile
and it was even less on Rogers / Fido, so i'm very happy
So finally pulled the trigger... TRUE 3g speed on this phone. I couldn't be any happier.
Only problem is T-Mobile network isn't the largest so I have a lot of edge network areas. When 3g is running its pretty darn quick though.
All for 60 unlimited....

Thats awesome. I have been contemplating getting SIMple Mobile for use on my MT4G or G2, but, I have been thinking about getting a NS to use on SM.
Do any of the Visual Voicemail apps work on this (or any T-Mo phone) using SIMple Mobile? It is my understanding that any FlexPay or Pre-Paid providers cannot offer any type of Visual Voicemail services. I know, Google Voice would work ok, but I'm not happy with their UI, and other aspects of GV.
If any Visual Voicemail apps would work with SIMple Mobile, flawlessly, then I'm sold on both SM & NS.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Just figured I would give you guys thinking of moving to Simple a heads up. Their "unlimited" data is capped at 1GB. There have been reports of them shutting down your service once you reach this and charging you for prepaid data to continue use. Do your research before you jump especially if you like to tether or do a lot of streaming.

I've read the same thing on HowardForums. Since it's prepaid, you can pay for the service but they can disconnect the data anytime they want during that month.
I'm paying $55.99 a month on a non-contract basis right now, gives me 500 minutes and unlimited data. For SMS I simply use Google Voice which is free. I use it as my primary number instead of the T-Mobile one. I don't know my T-Mobile number even.
So for $60 a month, seems like Simple Mobile is more expensive and its very likely that Simple Mobile's contract for data is rather expensive hence why they cap at 1gb of data. I wouldn't expect you to ever be allowed to go past that given that MVNO's make much less profit overall.
I considered it, but quickly abandoned the plan. If it was actually cheaper (for me) I'd be willing to try it.

Woah 1GB data cap? Seems like a plan that would be good for parents, grandparents, or busy businesspeople who don't have the time/desire to do anything but light data use.
Glad you mentioned this, I was actually thinking of trying out the service.
I was speaking to a Tmobile rep on the phone who couldn't go into details because of a recorded line, but mentioned that the HD2 can run on the 4G network. He said there are "ways that will not void warranty". He said to just search and I will find it. It was not a hardware limitation, but a software one. Anyone have an idea on this?

Yes the hd2 is hardware limited to 7.2 Mbs but since hspa+ is backwards compatible T-Mobile's "4g" network will make a difference to you connection... Idk what the Rep you talked to was talking about but frankly he's f.o.s (full of $#!+).. the hardware radio is limitation!!!

Thats what i figured. I know when HSPA came out, it was "labeled as 4G speed" but called HSPA. Maybe that is what he was confused about since now Tmobile is trying to actually have a true 4G network. Who knows. HSPA is good for me now anyway.
after the 3.14 update they'll release one that's 4.0 meaning 4g and the hd2 will then have 4g ....lol
What a douchebag, I hate phoneshops, most of them would tell you everything you want to here, just to let you buy one. When I went for my hd2, I had to buy a display model because there were none left, and the guy behind the desk had one too, an hd2. With a cooked rom. I asked to run the phones init process before taking it home, and it got stuck at sim recognising, we tried multiple simcards, everything failed, that guy was also a douche, he said immediatly, sold is sold. Maybe he tried to customise his hd2 and when it failed, he swapped it with the store display model. Luckely for my another employee overthere said he couldn't make it, if it was up to the first seller, I had to send it to repair,that dumb prick. The other one gave me a cheque to buy it in another store, where I asked the same thing, point is, always try before you buy, and insist, you are customer, and king.
Im not too familiar with all this phone junk... I mean when you guys are saying its a hardware issue, to me it sounds like you guys are saying a Dell c600 oldschool laptop only being able to run on dial up... DSL outta the question... hahaha...
i do believe it is probably a software issue, but i havent researched it much...

You have to research that a phone isn't like a laptop, lol...
Even in a smartest of smartphones you can not change the radio module, like adding a modem in the cheapest laptop, different class of gadgets.

so did your statement about hspa+ mean that the phone takes full advantage of the bandwidth available in hspa without any software mods?
T-Mobile doesn't even have real 4G. Hell, they don't even hardly have 3G where they say they do, let alone the "largest 4G network in America"

No, our totally awesome HD2's will not run 4G speeds, unless you know some sort of black magic or voodoo.
HSPA + uses the same frequency as the 3G one.. so even though its the same AWS band the hardware must be able to reach the Max speed avaible... it would be like having a 1Gig/s line but it only reaching 100mbs since that's the hardware limit... Now in some cases hardware is capable of more but limited by the firmware.. take for instance wimax modules, there capable of LTE but don't have the supported software...

It is very likely they were referring to 3.5G (H) instead of 4G.
Actually T-Mobile does not really have 4G yet that could be comparable to Verizon for instance... yes, it is fast on Galaxy phones but overall it is just fast fast connection... 3.75G I guess ... however, my HD2 works on 3.5G (H) connection just fine and I am subscribed to 4G 200MB plan for $10...
Will HD2 work on real 4G... cmon man don't make me loose calories by typing what 1300 threads already state... NOT HAPPENING!

I'm not commenting on whether 4G is possible or not on the HD2, but rather on your comment above.
They advertise Android phones don't they, yet that's possible on the HD2. They advertise WM7 phones, yet the HD2 can do that too. I know a lot of things on the HD2 were said to be impossible and later it was proved possible either through software changes or even just enabling a registry setting. Cell companies limit features of phones all the time by not including certain software or not enabling certain features as a way of differentiating phones. So as far as your comment goes, it means absolutely nothing.

Doesn't matter if 4G network not works onto HTC HD2,because when more people buying a 4G phone than they are using 4G network and after few months (maybe) year than 3G is also faster as before. 3G networks can used and functionally better onto internet whitout changed when 3G is full than you automatically down to almost historic G networks. When time is there i sell a new smartphone with 4G,but my old HTC HD2 is ever working (when it rains and not rains). I like this crazy phone. Unbeleaveble

With all the new kernels and rom developments lately, my Vibrant is running better than ever before. If this gets confirmed, that's icing on the cake. I could easily stick with this phone for a while.
Just went on the t-mobile website and changed my plan from "T-Mobile Android Unlimited Web" to Unlimited 4G Web. It says it will take up to 24 hours to change, so I will report maybe tomorrow on if I get increased speeds or not.
Hmm, interesting. My wife got a G2 and we switched our plan to an unlimited one an now I have 4g enabled on my plan (says 4g web) but I never really bothered checking speeds. But it might explain why I've been able to stream at 128kbs on tune in radio. I'll need to investigate this more.

If you buy any 3G or HSPA+ non-Blackberry smartphone they will put you on the 4G plan. The Android plan is being phased out for a more "general" data plan, and them calling it a 4G Web Plan has no impact on your download or upload speeds. It's practically the same thing.
Went through this with them on the phone when I got my HD7 because I noticed the "Android Unlimited Web" on my Vibrant's SIM (I put hte Unlimited Data in the HD7 and a 200MB plan SIM in the Vibrant). They said it was no difference, but to change it anyways since they're phasing those plans out.
This allows them to have only two types of data plans, like other carriers: Blackberry Plans and a General Data Plan. Before they had Blackberry Plans, Andorid Plans, and a General 3G data plan.
Since most if not all newer smartphones (except mid-range/low-end smartphones and features phones) will be HSPA+ (they call it 4G), they just call it a "4G Web" plan.

The idea that tmobile has to "enable 4g" from their customer service department seemed fairly ludicrous to me (I almost broke out the "Double facepalm" pic). Especially since my Vibrant connects to HSDPA the majority of the time which I'm fairly certain, since it's backward compatible, is actually the HSDPA+ (tmobile's "4G") network it was connecting to. I never enabled any 4G data plan. Or 3.5G for that matter.
This is also probably an attempt to get people to give up the Twenty to twenty-five dollar android data plans they've been holding onto since the G1 days.

Man, I really wanted to believe this would work. Anyone else try it out? I tried to see what mine would do, but when I looked at the services, it added 10 bucks to my overall plan, so I didn't go through with it. I'd love to see some other reviews about this.

Yea, I'm on flex pay and signed up with T-mobile when I got my Vibrant, so for me the price was the same.

Guys, our Vibrants are not 4G devices and wont connect faster than 7Mbs. The plan is called a 4G plan but that doesn't mean that our hardware is capable of those speeds. Don't you think someone would have posted screen shots by now if they were hitting 4G speeds? C'mon you guys should know better than that.

So since the GS4G is the same as our phones, couldn't people just swap in the 4G radio in the the Vibrant? Much like the FFC mod?

Sounds stupid right? Don't go upgrading your grandfathered data plans because this 4G data plan only costs more and wont speed up your phone.

What are you getting for speed test? It shows HSPA, but not HSPA+ (I don't think?). Sacramento has good LTE according to AT&T...

Nexus 7 doesn't have LTE radios... you only get 3G.
Doesn't it have HSPA+? I saw the nexus 4 get like double or triple the speed on HSPA+ (but they were on tmobile...)

Yes, it does... but your speeds may vary.

haha, definitely! i never got those speeds on Tmobile's HSPA+, tho my device maxxed at 1.2 Ghz, if that makes a difference.
tried again on new rom, had more APN connections. tried the att LTE and it doubled the speed to about 2000kbps now. getting better! it a rural area too.
edit: now around 3000-4000kbps. much better. was barely getting into the thousands earlier.
Ah there you go, that's getting better. Despite the good speeds, the network has been annoying me a bit lately. Sometimes i will have a perfect connection, my status will show HSPA 10, with excellent signal, yet i can't connect to anything, can't load anything. I wonder if it's because it's L.A., and there are millions of iPhones and others on the network, and data-only plans don't get priority? The priority thing is my theory at the moment anyway, haha. I have never experienced this on my smartphones, but then again, this is my first experience with AT&T mobile data.

same here, no idea on the att mobile data, could be second class customers. haha. yes, much better, i'll test in the city in a bit, hopefully it'll be a lot better. are you custom rom? running cm10.1 now, seems better. might fix some data connection issues?
Yeah, you will probably get some good speeds in the city. I'm running stock 4.2.1, but I have thought about trying CM 10.1, but not just for that reason. I think I might call AT&T later and see if I can find out about the tablet plans. I have heard about some customers not having priority, like if you are subscribed to a sister company but are running on the same network as the main carrier. I'll let you know what I find out.

That shows that you are on WiFi though.
Has anyone tried tmobile? I talked to support and they said they have prepaid plans for tablets. Might go try it out and see if I can use their service. I heard people having trouble, but that was for the regular mobile plan. Maybe the data only plan will work, and be much faster. Going in today, I'll let you know and then post results if things go well.
Cool, let us know. When i fist got the device a month ago, they said they didn't have any tablet plans all they could offer me is a wifi hotspot device.

edit: if you want more info, just went into the store and asked about the mobile broadband plans. I said some people had trouble online, but It was probably because they tried their phone sim card. this is data only or something, so it worked right as i put it in the slot and rebooted. So much faster. Wow. $35 for 3.5GB. Same pricing as AT&T basically. WAY faster.
And they stay consistent too.
