what is the BEST video chat app? - Epic 4G General

I know they're a lot of people wondering like myself.. What do you guys think is the best video chat app currently out that works best for our phones... I use to love Tango but it stopped working for me and my Wife's Epic.. of course its been a few months since I used it.. But which do you think is the best? I figured I would ask before throwing another 10 apps on my phone for testing. Also what roms are you running with it?
Thanks

Let me break it down:
Here is a list of the video call apps that I know to be available. If i'm missing one, let me know. I'd love to try it out:
Tango (Android/iPoop) - I'm going to assume this is the most popular. Video quality seems to be pretty good. I do have some occasional feedback issues with audio, but that comes and goes. The latest version of Tango FC'd everytime I opened it, but luckily for me, I had the version right before the update backed up, so I'm still in business.
Fring (Android/iPoop) - This was the first app I used for video calls. It did the job. I haven't used it in a while, and I know they've improved on it. I switched to Tango because everyone I knew was using it.
Qik (Android/iPoop) - I've never used Qik. At first it didn't support iPoop, and that was the only people I had to talk to via video call. Friends i've spoken with that use it don't seem to prefer it over any of the other solutions, so I haven't really had the urge to try it myself.
Yahoo Messenger (Android/iPoop/PC) - I've had mixed results with Yahoo. It seems to work pretty well for the most part, and is useful when chatting phone to PC as it's simple and alot of people already have a yahoo ID. The only issue I had with it was the video was always tilted sideways no matter which way I held my phone...
Google Talk (Android/PC) - I went down this road when I tried the leaked Gingerbread ROM. I had high hopes, but this was pretty much unuseable for me. I was able to connect, but video was too choppy at best. I'm positive this will improve in the future, but as of today, I don't recommend it.
ooVoo (Android/iPoop/PC) - This is an interesting app. It allows conference calling, so you can actually carry on video calls simultaneously with more than one user. I used this shortly and tested it for a phone to PC call and it seemed to be pretty decent. I'd have to give it a little more time and testing, but my first impression was that it did the job pretty well.
Skype (Android/iPoop/PC) - I know this one is new. I think there's a thread if you want to try to get this to work on your phone. Haven't tried it... can't really speak on it. I would check out the thread if you're interested. I'm sure there's feedback there.
As with everything on this community, YMMV. And keep in mind, all of my opinions are based on using the app with a wi-fi connection, so if you're going with 3g or 4g, you'll just have to test what's out there and see what gives you the best quality call. I hope this helps at least a little bit.
If nothing else, it'll at least give you some options to try.

I just used a modded skype for froyo over 4g and it worked beautifully except for the fact that I was sideways on my friends comp.
It was mad clear! He also said I was laggy a bit but I blame that on the 4g. I haven't tried wifi.
You can try it. When you go to the thread about skype 2.0 in the themes and app section, click the link that talks about the sgs2 or w/e and then there will be another link where the author says "TRY THIS ONE FOR FROYO"
That's the one ^_^

Well, Skype owns QIK so hopefully there will be some crossover pretty soon. Trouble is, even if it's the best program in the world it doesn't matter if your friends aren't using it. Skype is the one everyone else in the PC world seems to use, so now that it'll work on android, that's the one for me.

That was my exact outlook and why I went with skype lol
Before that I used tango which was excellent...but not everyone knew of it...but it was always fun to see the random people in my contact list who had it lol

I've been using Skype and even 3G, which all I have, was way better than QIK, Tango, or anything else that I have tried

[Q] How's is Qik working for you?

Hey I'm thinking about upgrading and getting the mytouch 4g for me and my girlfriend but Ive read initial reviews about the video chatting being a little choppy even on wifi (these were reviews when the phone first came out). Any experiences would be helpful. Thanks!
I live in one of the 2-3MB 4G areas not the 6+ ones. I know more speed is always more better, but honestly I find the 2-3 good enough for everything I need.
I suppose it does depend on what you mean by "a little choppy". If you were expecting to come across like ESPN you will be heartbroken. But as for freezing up / bursting every few seconds, I haven't seen anything like that. This is 4G. I haven't tried it on wifi.
I don't find QIK to be the best server ever conceived and thought that before MT4G. I believe a lot of the problems people have seen is shortcomings in QIK. I tried the Yahoo one and rather than shortcomings it was barely functional at all. If it were 500% better it would still be unusable. I forget the name of the one the i-fans use, starts with a T. I haven't tried that one at all.
I tried using QIK to talk to someone with an EVO (Sprint). It was a miserable experience! Nothing like TMOB to TMOB. So that's another thing to consider.
Tango works well..
Qik works great for me... only time it's a little choppy is if someone has an Edge connection...

Qik, Tango, Yahoo Messenger
I Use Qik, Tango & Yahoo Messenger to do my video chatting with.
So far Qik is the best, it is built into the phone specifically for video chatting. However, Qik seems to work best when your over wifi.
When your over 4g use Tango. It does get a little Choppy but it serves its purpose. One problem i have with Tango is, you will need to have your headphones in or be in a quiet area in order to hear the other person well. Once when Wifi'ing using Tango, i was able to have a clear video call with someone for around 45mins. They were using an EVO if that matters.
Lastly Yahoo messenger i rarely use but ive started using it these last few days since the update came out. It works oooooook. But i would only use it to video chat with people who were on there pic.
Also Oovoo is currently in its beta stage, if you use ooVoo. But it has ALOT of bugs still.
Hope this helped you.

UHHHH, no video calls?

Uhhh, whats the point of selling a phone with a front facing camera, if the phone doesn't come with the software right off the bat?? LOL
Anyways, is there a work around for this with one of the ROMS?
Thanks!!
theres tango in the market..qik..and you can google the fring beta for the atrix
Blame google for not having a way to video chat, not Motorola for including it on the phone.

Wow, great. Another person posting a new thread without even looking up anything first.
It's been everywhere, even when you go to the Motorola website and look at the Atrix it has a picture of it using Qik.

For one thing - the sarcasm is childish. Two, if anyone actually READ the forum RULES, it says - SEARCH BEFORE POSTING..... Its not a difficult concept. Third, all this does is CLUTTER the forum with crap that doesnt need to be here.
Tango works, but it's unreliable and compare to facetime it's crap. Google needs to make facetime for android.
Google needs to add video support to Google Talk.

and if I want to call to someone don't have a smartphone....like samsung f480 without that software
So there is no videocall option? are they serious? not everybody have qik or other software...just a usual videocall over 3g
I think its a probleme with android and not the phone it self...
I already have the dezire z and nexus S and they have a front camera but can't do a video call to another phones without this softwares
motorola wrote a crapy motoblur and was unable to wrote a normal videocall app???
p.s. moto had a super videocall option on their phones - they can even record video!
I see video calling as one of those things that would be great to do someday but for now its just another come on gimmick. Without every single phone being able to video call (not video chat) and being compatible with all the other phones out there I see no real reason for it other than a gimmicky thing. Having said that, my wife has the iPhone 4 and she has been after me to get it also so we can video call. Like the droids, the iPhone 4 can video call but only with another iPhone 4. It may be that when they come out with the iPhone 5 this summer that it may not be able to video call with the iPhone 4.
Now, since ATT saw fit to shove an update on my Atrix that essentially locked it up even more I am seriously considering going to the iPhone 4 and make my wife happy so she can see my pretty face when she calls me. She calls me once a day to ask how I am and give me a shopping list. I can see her calling me several times a day now just so she can video call, Oh joy! And if I don't accept her request to video call I can see myself in the dog house for a while.
we really need Skype Video or Google Video Chat ASAP.

There seems to be a lot of elitism on xda recently. This place used to be more friendly.
What is a usual video call over 3g? Isn't every video call use some sort of software. I mean I know what you mean but aren't those on really old nokia phones pre 3g? Android has quik Iphone has facetime.. windows has.. Who cares?

lol is this a first android device for some of you? ive had 4 ive never seen what you call " just a regular video call " its always been through software apps downloaded from the market.. tango/fring/qik and the others. one app i forget the name, paltalk i think, aloows for video chatrooms. if u want to video call someone who doesnt have a capable device in the first place, well nevermind. just download the apps and make some friends
the most people have a old phones, or don't have a wifi or 3g plan for internet....but they can do a video call for free...like in portugal...call's and video calls are free with all mobiles....like samsung to nokia, htc to other...withou internet plan or wifi connection....soo....

[Q] best video chat?

well im am new to the android and i have many questions lol, i think im going to have to read the book on the phone

i use oovoo beta and tang video calling...i like tango the best..tango is for android to android video calling and oovoo is for phone to phone/pc video calling.. the thing about oovoo is the person using a pc to video calling must have the new beta version installed on their pc which every person i know doesnt want to download a beta just to video chat with me...but it work...

It is most unfortunate - but I'm betting someone will come out with a "compatible" app in due time, if Skype doesn't wake up.
Alternately, I'd take an official Google Talk video chat solution.

I have found that ooVoo works really well.
Hopefully Skype will do something with Qik to get around their exclusivity with Verizon.
Or even better, Google get off their asses and start using the video call framework that's been in the API since at least 2.1. They bought Gizmo5, who was doing SIP video calling using h.264 on my Nokia n810 back in '07. It was essentially what Apple's FaceTime is now.
I've been using Yahoo Messagings video chat because my wife doesn't have a smart phone that does video, so being able to connect with a computeri s a must for me, but the video is sideways. Does OOVOO not have this problem?

ooVoo is the best around. It has a small footprint, displays correctly and works (when it does) flawlessly.
My only problem with it is it's inconsistency making calls. Sometimes it will show the user online; sometimes it won't.

Not surprising to me really. While I like a lot of things about Google their 'statup' operation strategy with lots of independently operating teams leads to this.
I say the same thing all the time with official Google apps for Android. Where's my official Google Analytics/AdWords/Docs/Talk app? I know all of these can be addressed in various ways by 3rd party apps or tertiary functionality in other apps. But I'd like to see some official Google apps for some as their official apps usually tend to be good quality.
More than likely video chat on google will be release at Honeycomb and hopefully with some devs help we'll have it for our froyo devices.

+1 Tango! Simple to use, and it streams extremely well on either 3G or 4G (best). I've use Yahoo, Qik, etc. and found those apps can be quirky and probably worked best on Wifi.

My problem with ooVoo was a perpetual attempt to sync, draining my battery. Their support said they'll be removing that from the next release but until then it's staying off my device.

+1, same here, drains battery fast.
I've had that same issue with Oovoo, it's literally killed my battery extremely fast to reach and sync with nothing. But other than that it's the only logical choice for Video chatting until Skype and Verizon stop screwing everyone over with Exclusiveness.

[Q] Skype Video Call

So..
Skype got updated and video call is now supported on some handsets (Desire S, Xperia, Nexus etc)
Nice new interface also..
Anyway some devs can get video working on our tablets ???
Tango works perfectly and its free, you can download it at Market.
Cheers!
meh on Tango. Installed the Thunderbolt version of Skype on my HTC Sensation and video worked fine. I wonder if it would work on the Iconia
Yep, screw tango, skype is allover the world, works on my epic with video but not on iconia (no video).

I'm really going to be disappointed if this is the case... been waiting for video support for a while now.
I, like other, have tried the new skype 2.0.0.47 'hack' by theos0o (v5 i believe) but surely, skype crashes with the 'enable video' checked in the advanced menu.
Anyone?
I have been considering other video app options, only most of my friends and family are skype users... also I have been using skype for many years now, so it sucks their rotten suppprt for us android users...

I really hate that we have to jump through hoops to have video chat on an Iconia. You see, it's really a selling point to have a front facing camera on a tablet. Automatically you would assume that since it has a front facing camera, it would have some video chat suite included..

Everybody i know uses skype. Do we expect them all to change just so I can use the iconia for vid conferencing?
Tango doesn't work that well... Personally I tested it and it has a lot of audio problems. Anyway that's not the majoir problem with it. Tango is not a pc platform. I want be able to talk to anybody not just to the ones having a smartphone or a tablet. That's why Skype is superior, cause it works on every platform, and that's why it would be great having video support. It's all theoretical of course, cause, due to the fact our a500 mic is the worst mic ever built, to talk to somebody is impossible for the ones not living in the middle of a desert... To use voice I have to yell so loud that I could wake up ppl living 2 miles from my house.

Well, actually, yes. Skype is not very well supported on most mobile devices, as it is more of a PC app.
In my opinion, the best multi-platform thing going is Google Talk. It works on all of my current devices -- phone, tablet, desktop and notebook PCs. Anyone that I know who won't switch to Google Talk will only get to talk with me when I'm in front of my PC, and since I got the A500, the time spent in front of my PC is lessening every day.
If Skype doesn't quickly start improving support for mobile devices, it's only a matter of time before it starts quickly losing popularity.

I too wish Skype would just add video chat capabilities for all devices. It can't be THAT hard. I've got plenty of friends who use Skype, but I have absolutely NONE that use Google Talk and again, none of my friends' friends use it either so it wouldn't be possible to start converting them to Google Talk.
The simple fact is that Skype is way, WAY more popular than Google Talk.

When I got my tablet, no one used Google talk for VC, but all I had to do was ask, n it was easy cuz if you have a gmail account, which almost everyone does, either by choice or by Droid, you can chat. You don't need another account, another program, anything! And for the (very!) Few I come across that 1) want to VC with me, 2) have a Skype, 3) don't have a Droid, and 4) somehow missed the gmail revolution, I convert them. They get to talk to me, AND get better email. Win-win. N seriously, how often do you come across someone that fullfills all of those criteria? Cuz if they are missing any of those 4, you're set
