[Q] Galaxy Tab...How Pure? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

So I just got a new Galaxy Tab this last Friday. Love it! How pure is the Google in the stock ROM? It is the first I have seen of Honeycomb, and not sure how much Samsung has tinkered with the UI already if any. Then I saw another post where they are about to shove out an update that includes TouchWiz. So I'm not real into using TouchWiz. I'm on a Nexus S for my mobile and love it as well.
Basically, guess I asking if the 10.1 is already pure 3.1? If so, I am going to go ahead and root and call it good.

I have a XOOM and a Galaxy Tab 10.1. The XOOM is supposed to be a "pure Google device" or Google experience device, and I see virtually no differences between the two. It looks like Samsung, for whatever reason, left Honeycomb alone with the exception of a few minor changes like the addition of a Kies option in USB settings, and minor stuff like that.
In fact, I wish they would have done a little customizing. The file system doesn't support files over 4GB, while the XOOM does. They bailed on an SD card hack, which the transformer and iconia have. And they did nothing to improve the video playback over stock Honeycomb.

I'm looking forward to the Touchwiz update. I'll go ahead and install it when it's available. If I don't like it, then I'll just flash back to stock.

Samsung added their own keyboard which is optional to use. The stock browser doesn't seem to have Labs, tho not sure if that was Samsung's doing.

there's also a different camera app.

hi i just got my GT7500 from jakarta launch on saturday. in anycase, i'm not that impressed by 10.1 ... and i kept on confusing what is the difference between 10.1v and 7510 and 7500? anyone with a light on this?

TouchWiz UX, the Samsung UI, will come with the next update soon.

in any case, i'm not impressed by its slippery back grip. BUT the screen, man its nice screen estate..
anyway, now i'm confused because mostly here you guys got 10.1v and 10.1 p7510 in which i dont know if there will be any development for the custom rom.. which is BADLY needed in my opinion..

Galaxy Tab 2 - 10.1inch, Honeycomb?

Just saw this on Engadget (via Pulse, hence the URL) and thought people might enjoy the read.
The Tab 2 seems to be following in the footsteps of the Xoom and LG Slate with the screen size. The article mentions no news or rumors of the destiny for our beloved Tabs but maybe the Samsung event will give us the good (or bad) news about the Honeycomb update.
I'm sure we'll 3.0 love as soon a system dump is available, but it'd still be nice of Samsung to give an official update seeing as this is the Tab which (pretty much) started the Android Tablet evolution.

i am very happy with my 7" tab. not too big not too small just perfect, the 10.1" will be a bit to big, but i do agree that we should get the 3.0 upgrade soon.....
Ok one of the main reasons I bought my tab (other than how amazing cool it is) is due to the 7" screen. I dont want a huge 10" screen!. I have a 32" bravia for a pc monitor and a 10.1" netbook, I got the tab for portability! I wish they would leave it at 7"
I sure hope they don't increase the screen size, that is one of the great differentiating factors between the Tab and the iPad. I loved my iPad but it was too big to carry easily. All of the new Honeycomb announced tablet's have the bigger screen and I was counting on Samsung sticking with the smaller form factor. Although the rumors of Apple considering a 7" iPad are interesting and would tempt me to back. The biggest disappointment with the Tab is the sluggishness I get and no Android browser I've tried is as smooth and responsive as Safari on the iPad.
I have reliable information saying this will be some sort of official google tablet(maybe for the european market?). The hardware will also blow everyones minds somehow. Don't know any details about that, but the competition will supposedly be playing catchup for quite some while before they get there. I guess it will be some fancy new screen at least. I'm looking forward to sunday as samsung will tell us everything:-D
and yes, it will be running honeycomb.
Whatever, i hope it is a google tab made by samsung. Either way samsung fecking sucks ass. I've had a captivate since the day before launch and its yet to receive froyo. What the hell is the hold up? I learned my lesson and not to buy their proprietary bull****. I jumped ship and got the nook cause of the development and me not having the patience for samsung's bull**** and lies. Yeah wait and hope for your dump. Good luck porting that. Even with the nexus s galaxy s still hasn't been ported. Knock knock .... anyone home. As you can tell, i have lost my patience for samsung.
I'll check back in 6months. I'd almost be willing to place a wager. FU samsung FU

I'm sorry to be off topic from OP but your post is fubared to say the least.
You complain that Samsung doesn't release any update. You jump ship to get the Nook and use a custom ROM? LoL I guess Barnes & Noble released Honeycomb for Nook eh?
The rumor mill is going strong today.
Rumors have said the iPad will be available in 7" form factor and now the Tab will be in 10" form factor.
Wouldn't that be funny, each side copying the other after each saying the other size was not good!

+1 to that.
Why would people port it to a phone? 3.0 is a tablet only firmware. 2.4 is the mix of Gingerbread and Honeycomb for phones.
And you jumped ship because of their development? A 3.0 port of the SDK? I'd rather keep this and wait for a proper port tbh.

WHo said anything about porting this to a phone? Well since the nook is an omap it shares a lot of similarities with droidx, and since motorolla dosnt have all this proprietary bs that they dont release code for. So when trying to port a nexus s to galaxy s, one would think it would be simple. So when you guys get that dump i seriously doubt it will ported. It's just my opinion. That would be samsungs fault cause a lot of their drivers are proprietary since they make the hardware. So if they don't release code then code will have to be reversed engineered and that takes time...lots of it. Well you can see where i'm going with this. Samsung could of released info today about how the new tab and how they are going to upgrade their other one that was released 6 months ago but they didn't and they don't give a fuk, seriously.
] About jumping ship? I was just saying that if you want upgrades in os's , well , samsung hasn't shown that they give a rats ass. I learned the hard way just like you guys will. I happen to choose the nook because of the hardware and how easily it is to port. Unlike samsung again with their proprietary drivers and what not. This isn't a nook vs tab debate. I think the galaxy tab is beautiful hardware is sexy but the buck stop there. Samsung needs to show us that they care and i just don't have that faith. So good luck with the dump. Hope that works out.

I misunderstood your phone comment, I thought you meant porting Honeycomb to the Nexus/Galaxy S, not Nexus to Galaxy
I haven't looked into the Nook myself so I'm unfamiliar with the specs/features of it and the work developers has done to it is shocking and amazing.
I agree wwith the comment about Samsung being *****es with their upgrades. But I personally think that with the developers we have, I think we *might* be able to pull off something spectacular with this incredible device.
Most of us jumped into it buying the Tab knowing of Samsungs backgroynd but that's the risk everyone takes with devices, right? I came from a Desire and since FroYo, we've been screwed by HTC. No Sense UI 2.0 eventhough ports of the Desire HD & Z have proven it could cope. All manufacturers do it in their own way.
*Hopefully* Samsung will change their ways.

I fully agree it would be unjust for the galaxy not to get some samsung love. But love and sumsung is almost an oxymoron. Specially when sammy's just getting in on this whole "open" thing. If they don't ;produce then this will be the straw that breaks the camels back. SO in the meantime let me say FU samy, shame on you.
I will be pissed if the tab 2 is not 7 inches. Lame.

Im glad its going to be 10inch, makes me feel better for having a 7inch tab
Seems to be a lot of misunderstanding in this thread
Samsung always said there would be a 7" AND a 10" form factor... They are just rolling out the 10" with the latest hardware and Software (HC). Nothing surprising here. I ma not sure you can call that a GT2... It's just the 10" GT
Hopefully down the road they will update the 7" as well. nd I think it's a good thing they don't do it immediately !! I'd be pissed if my GT is immediately outdated...
I'm taking my Tab back and waiting out the release of the Xoom and Tab 2. I think right now was the wrong time to buy.
I for one do not think I am going to buy a new Galaxy Tab just for a few extra inches. I mean come on samsung it is the same galaxy tab just a small bit bigger...and also weren't they the ones that first made a speech about how 7" tablets are more protable then 10"....
And on that note, If for some reason Honeycomb didn't get put on my 7" I would prob buy another tablet...but not this one.

NO!!!!! The 8.9" has custom UI :( See this!!

Great!!! I don't want this crap custom UI thing!
Bye-bye Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9" ...
ARRRGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was waiting this news for days ... but custom UI? from Samsung?
What a sad day today
Thats really sucks big time. The size and weight is perfect. Why are Samsung doing this, they are shoting there self in the foot. They sucks and isn't fast to sendout software updates and improvement on products. I bet this have not changed, and those who buy this will ha e to wait forever to get HC updates
Wow that sux big time, glad I already preorder samsung galaxy tab 10.1....knew the custom ui thingy coming on 8.9 after i see the teaser video
This is absolutely ridiculous. Why would they keep the 10.1 stock and then put stupid crap over the 8.9? I hope its just a few apps and nothing to get in the way of the core OS like TouchWiz....
Just let me uninstall or turn it off and you can do whatever you want, but please Samsung just give me an option for stock 3.0......
I hope Samsung knows that they're gonna lose people to the Xoom if they put an intrusive skin on this.
Won't we be able to just flash a custom ROM?
and maybe we can flash 10.1's ROM on the 8.9 since the spec is IINM the same

Well of course, but its the principle of it.
I shouldn't have to flash a custom ROM just to get it the way that it comes from Google. Why can't they just give a checkbox in settings to turn off a UI customization?
Why the **** would they make 10.1 stock but 8.9 all TouchWiz'd out? The stock 10.1 was extremely well received by everyone, didn't Samsung get the hint that people want it that way?
I hope that its just extra Samsung apps and widgets, things that are easily ignored or not used. If they keep the stock 3.0 UI in tact thats all I want. This thing looks amazing at 1.03 lbs and .33 inches thick, just give it stock 3.0!!!!!!! Agh its killing me.
Considering the Galaxy S line sold over 10 million even with TouchWiz, with 2 being sold every second... Samsung sees no reason not to try this again. However, the Galaxy Tab did only manage to sell a pathetic 1 million so this could possibly be a bad idea, but I always thought it sucked anyways. That version of Android wasn't meant for tablets, and the Tab was so small..
Yeah, but if you read the Xoom forum, Honeycomb is not stable.
Do you think Samsung will give proper speedy update with this customization?
That's my only concern.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Well, after night slept, I was thinking what would be the reason I still might get this 8.9"?
Because I really like the form factor. Small, thin (very thin!), light.
So, here it is:
If and only if ... we can put custom ROM in it.
That's it!
That's the guarantee we can get an update, although unofficial. We would kill our-self if we wait Samsung to update (although they do give update to non U.S. Galaxy phones).
Oh, and I am now wondering, what could be the size of the battery?
Because it is so light!
I don't think it can have 6000+ mAH.
The previous 7" Gtab has only 4000 mAH and the weight is 380gram.
I would be even more pissed if it has the same battery size of that 7" version!
fwiw the 10.1 is supposed to have a ~6900mAh battery if that gives you any idea of what the 8.9 might have. Something around the ~6200 range probably.

BINGO!!
My only concern going for this sammy 8.9 is how long they will take to provide honeycomb updates. I'm spoiled using my NexusOne and always being at the front of the line with updates. I think that's why the xoom hasn't left my shopping list yet.
If the photos are legit then Samsung needs to spell check their promo gear.... 2nd pic....Availity to see......
I still want one though....
Big news. The 10.1 will have the Touch Wiz UI as well. I don't know what it looks like but I was hoping for the stock Honeycomb on the 10.1
Why do we even care if they have TouchWiz or not. Some one in XDA would surely come up with a custom ROM to get rid of it. No big deal for me at least.

The issue is more of samsung compiling loads of their crap into the framework keeping you from being able to completely strip out the samsung from the rom.
Until the development of an AOSP rom comes along there will still be samsung cluttering the device and crippling it just like they did with the rest of their phones.
Tabs wont have TouchWiz initially?
I spotted this in a Cnet article.
We should also note that the TouchWiz UX won't come on the tablets out of the box. Instead, it will come via a software update some time after the tablets are launched, but Samsung couldn't provide a more specific time frame.

pls! giv me some suggestion

samsung just announced that both of their tab will be released on early SUMMER n june 8 means i have to wait till june for buying anyone?
i m fed up of waiting, so i 'd like to ask xoom users, are xoom worth to buy? wat is it's bad?
If you have decided on buy an Android tablet, I don't see any reason why Galaxy tab's will be better than Xoom...
I can't see any negative to Xoom when you compare Galaxy tabs, but there are a few benefits,
Xoom comes with vanilla honeycomb which is million times better than any other 'skins'. Also you will get updates much faster and don't have to wait for Samsung to port it.
Look wise I like the Xoom..
I read an article yesterday that stated samsung is using a custom honeycomb UI so I lost interest immediately when I read that. I enjoy my xoom and I will stick with it at this point. I have also read that it feels like cheap plastic, which is another huge drawback in my opinion. To me a better screen isn't worth molested android, especially a version that is not only buggy and incomplete, but also total revamp of the whole UI, I foresee samsung screwing it up with a laggy interface as usual.

The thread should be merged with this one. Maybe you'll find more inspiration there.
btw, last time i watched a review and it said that "the marketplace need an update to view all apps". does the marketplace updated now n can view all of the apps?
I would go with the Google Experience device. Chances are you will receive updates more frequently on the Xoom than the Galaxy 10.1. Plus TouchWiz is on this thing according to Engadget. Not sure I would want that screwing up my Honeycomb greatness!

Well any tablet when held long enough will feel heavy. Depends on how comfortable you are holding the tablet and how strong your arms and wrists and fingers are haha..
Perhaps you can try holding a book of similar weight and see if you can stand it.
thx for everyone =)
but i just read about ppl said xoom will be sstop producing on june.
will this cause it lacks of accessories n software update in the future? is this true?
I read that the TouchWiz 4.0 is not deeply integrated into the Honeycomb (find the CNET article about this).
They are just bunch of apps and widgets. Even the 10.1 will be launched first as stock, which users can (or forced) to download the TouchWiz 4.0 via update.
I am not too worried with this TouchWiz thing, because XDA devs will root and we will be able to install custom ROM "anyway" Unless the bootloader is LOCKED and encrypted (like Motorola phones), history said Samsung has never done that.
So, I am now OK with this TouchWiz. From what I look in the hands-on video, it is still Honeycomb.
And also, living in Europe, Samsung gave updates to their phones here
So yeah, pretty much covered about the update.
I really like the hardware profile of this Samsung 8.9"
- Lighter at 470 gram versus 725 gram of Xoom.
- Thinner at 8.6"
- especially the PLS screen which is even better than the IPS of iPad2, no contest with Xoom in this area.

My thoughts exactly.
The history of Samsung updating their products is enough for me to say no thank you to any Android device they make. The only time I would consider is something like the Nexus S - stock Android with no Sense/Blur/Touchwiz and gets updates first.
Furthermore, am I the only one that cringes a little when you see/hear/read the word "Touchwiz"? Sounds like Touchjizz to me. Just sounds like a really cheesy name for a skin.
I honestly don't understand what everyone is up in arms about the weight of the Xoom is. Either get a dock or portfolio that can prop it up or lift some weights. Like 2 lb weights because the friggin Xoom weighs even less than that!
Sure, anything gets heavy after a while. But I have yet to run into a situation where I'm fatigued from messing with the Xoom. Honestly, the weight difference between any tablets shouldn't be an issue, unless it's half/double the weight of something (or something else extreme). I like the way the back feels. Sometimes it seems like people just want to find something else to criticize.

Xoom any good?

If you want a supported device get a xoom. I think the new gtab will launch with 2.1 and get 3.0 in about 8-12 months. (JK, but seriously Samsung has a proven track record of ZERO support for their devices)

You're probably going to get a bunch of people yelling at you for asking a question that has been asked many times over.
I'll answer though.
In short, yes it's good. It's excellent in my opinion.
Currently all Tablets running Honeycomb are going to suffer from having relatively few apps. This was the case when the first iPad was released. Luckily there are plenty of developers out there dedicated to creating quality applications for Honeycomb. Within a month or two, there will be an influx of applications and people will wish they had purchased the Xoom when they had the chance. With production numbers dropping there is no telling what Motorola's next design might be. It could be a locked down version like the Atrix phone kind of similar to what happened with the original Droid that was running vanilla Android. The Droid 2 had Motoblur and a locked bootloader; currently, owners of the original Droid are enjoying Gingerbread by Peter Alfonso.
Here are some current complaints:
1) No SD card support yet
2) LTE Upgrade will take 6 days
3) Application selection is limited
4) Performance seems low for a dual core product
My response:
1) It is coming and currently the unit has 32 GB of internal storage, are you running out already? If so, sit tight and you will be able to expand it to 64GB really cheaply.
2) Better than waiting 3 months on the release of the Xoom altogether, and if you are using it Wifi only like I am tethering it to my Epic 4G, LTE is irrelevant.
3) This will change with time, early adopters syndrome
4) As Google releases new versions of Honeycomb this will be addressed. Additionally there are already kernels bumping the speed from 1Ghz to 1.5Ghz creating a 50% performance increase out of the gates.
Anyway, it's all preference. I love Motorola's products so I got the Xoom.
This is like walking into an Apple store and asking if Macs are any good. What are you expecting?

Well you're not alone, no one here has probably used the Tab 10.1 before because it isn't out yet! lol.
But seriously OP, coming to a Xoom forum asking a question that's been asked in detail a million times already is ridiculous. You're gonna get pretty polarized answers... Every other post in this forum is about how good/bad the Xoom is, just read.
anywho, back to the OP's question,
i'd wait it out and get that samsung. its thinner, lighter, cheaper, and has a better display than the xoom. but lets not get ahead here, those samsung tablets at CTIA were mockups.
as for updates, do not worry about that, as updates will be coming since the new gtab's will be a near google experience device. CNET has reported that the TouchWiz updates could possibly be an optional update. And tbh, i kinda like the new touchwiz UI.
personally, i'd wait.

Samsung is evil incarnate, having just come from a Samsung Fascinate, I can tell you touchwiz is the most godawful piece of software you could ever have on your device. Not becuase it isnt good, touchwiz isnt all that bad, but, and this is a BIG bit, YOU WILL NEVER GET UPDATES. EVER. PERIOD. THANKS FOR PLAYING BUY OUR NEXT PRODUCT TO GET A SOFTWARE UPGRADE! No thank you. Not playing that game again. Not now. Not ever!
I can't wait to see if the GTabs will get updated. That is one of the main reasons people seem to be using to prevent others from liking them. Luckily the general population could care less about going from Android 2.2, to 2.3, and for those who can't wait... rooting is the alternative. Or buying another device.

If you're one of those folks that always want the updates first you basically need a Google experience device.
Sammy seems to be the worst out of all the oems though.
Also look at the vodafone nexus one as far as updates that are tied to carrier goes.

Motorola has already said that the report on cutting back on manufacturing xooms is 100% BS
I'm also considering buying a Xoom... I was going to buy the Galaxy tab 10.1, but yesterdays announcement kind of changed that, i don't want to wait until June.
So i have two options now, buy a Xoom or the original Galaxy Tab 10.1 (now renamed to 10.1v in EU).
About Xoom, i like the idea of clean Android, updates, USB and microSD slot. I have a feeling that Xoom will get more support in XDA forums also.
I'm not sure i like the extra 131g.
About Galaxy Tab 10.1v, i actually like the original design more, i don't care that it's 2mm thicker then the new one.
But I'm sure I don't like the idea of not getting any updates or getting a update with that TouchWiz UX.
Considering all this and that you have actually hold the 730g Xoom in your hand, which would you buy?
The Touchwiz UI they put on the tab isnt the same as one on the phones. But still, even that has to be revamped when new version of android comes out. Samsung is the worst when talking about updates. I liked the design of the original GTab 10.1 too, but thinking of updates, I went ahead and got the xoom. Samsung just needs to stop putting **** on awesome device like that and make the damn thing go into shame.

To buy or not to buy...

Hello I am planning on buying a Honeycomb tablet and i have been looking at getting a Xoom. However I am worried that it's just ... not ready. Like I have been wanting to get a tablet for a while and I was waiting for a Honeycomb one. Now Do I get this, The galaxy tab 10.1 or an Asus transformer.
I know the hardware on these are almost similar so what I'm most worried about is support. I know the Galaxy tab will be getting touchwiz so it won't be updated as fast where as the Xoom and Transformer are running stock. Also I am new to android and may try rooting and would it be easy ( read not screw up on step 2 ) to do it to these tablets.
Finlay about my worry about it not being ready. I know the SD reader doesn't work (officially thank's guys for fixing it) and hopefully it will soon. Also the app ecosystem will it be expanding rapidly.
I would prefer to get one sooner rather then later but if I have to wait I will

I bought myself a Xoom a while ago and I have been very happy with it so far. There are a few bugs that happen every now and then but, it isn't something that effects things enough to have me stop using my Xoom. Overall, I'm very pleased with my Xoom. I was contemplating returning my Xoom and getting either the Transformer or the GTab 10.1 but, I'm going to stay with the Xoom because I want a tablet now and the Xoom is the best option at this moment. The Xoom just got a recovery so when the HC source is out there should be a good amount of development happening.
To answer the rooting question, rooting the Xoom was very simple. There is a one click root app in the development section which does all the work for you.
Hope this helps.
I won mine over from MyDroidWorld and I love it.
Was gonna wait and buy the Asus Transformer but heck with it.
I don't use my laptop much these days since getting the Xoom.
I went and installed Taimat 1.3.1 and it couldnt have been easier.
I used the one click root program. Rooted on my first try.
I would buy a xoom if you have the money. The Transformer looks great but there is no actual usb or hdmi on the tablet itself.
Yeah and no one really knows when the transformer will hit north american shores..
Galaxy 10.1 wifi hits store shelves in 7 weeks, has a better display panel and MIGHT have a better SoC. Also, there is no indication that Touchwiz will be ported to the tablet. All indications are that they are including "touchwiz" widgets and a few other slight theming modifications, so updating shouldn't be a problem.
Xoom is available now at most stores with full forums support.
Transformer NA release is still TBA.
Galaxy 10.1 has touchwiz, which will definitely delay the updates.

True the screen is better but the screen on my Xoom is perfectly fine for me. But, another thing to consider that I was truly weighing are codec support. The GTab 10.1 will most likely have most codec support for videos. I'd be surprised if Samsung doesn't put in their codec support. I love my Xoom but, now I'm becoming unsure again on whether the GTab 10.1 would be a better choice for me...
