evo shift vs samsung transform vs samsung epic 4g - EVO Shift 4G General

which ones better i kno the shift has better support and stuff but i really wanted the tmobile g2 but they dnt sell them any more so i was wondering between these three which is the best and the shift is more like the g2 except for sense

If you google 'phonearena *phone model* specs' you'll be able to see some of the differences between the phones. I was stuck between the Transform and EVO Shift myself a week ago when I picked up my new phone and silly enough the EVO won because HTC shipped it with a word processor app (I'm big into using my phone for rough draft documents). This was the big seller for me since I came from using winmo which always came with a mini version of MS Word.

The epic and shift blow the transform out of the water. But my wife has the epic, and the software for it sucks. Not as much custom stuff out there for it, and the stock software is so buggy. That screen on the epic is sure nice though...

Lol I almost got the transfrom until I read the reviews and couldn't find it on xda (at that time not sure if its here now). Very happy I chose the shift!

Coming from a Samsung Moment, I would never buy a Samsung phone product ever again. What a piece of garbage. Plus it sounds like the current Samsung phones still have non working GPS. Stay far away from that junk. Check out the SDX forums for some more Samsung info outside of here.

Yeah my wife had a moment damm that was a effin pos! they should stick to makind displays for tv's and phones and such.lol

EVO Shift all the way. Couple off friends have moments, one has a Transform, and a couple of Epics. All of them are constantly regretting their decisions to buy these phones for one reason or another. More support for the Shift, and development. Plus it's hellua great out of the box. But of course my opinion is biast. It's hard not to be, the Shift is way better.

I chose the shift and I'm liking it so far but now I want to kno wats a good rom for gingerbread and a good kernel to use and wats a good screen protector cuz I might keep it after the months over

If you want completely stock x99's GB rom here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1127169
Then MikShifted-G another GB based rom heard nothin but good reviews about this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150481
The bad news is that HTC hasn't released the source for the kernel used in GB so you won't be able to OC any of these rom's. But MikShiftede is pretty quick from what I've read.I haven't the chance install it yet to give you first hand knowledge.

Alright so how good is the cm 7.0.3.1 for daily use or are the nightlies better to use as a daily driver

You would do better going to that thread and asking there as I haven't tried cm 7 on the shift.

samsung transform does NOT compare to the evo shift!
I just upgraded from the transform to the evo shift and love it!!
I had shift182 rom ext4 on my transform and nothing helped the speed (or should i say lack of) issues.
Evo shift is the way to go, night and day difference!
Hope this helps.

Pulled the trigger, and made a change

Just wanted to say hello from socal, pulled the trigger on a g2 last night to replace my trusty mt3g 1.2

Put it this way, the only thing that the mt4g has that the g2 doesnt is a FFC and a crappy version of sense.... I believe the other hardware is the same? (processor etc.) also the g2 has a keyboard, which is always a plus
Much better choice over the mt4g.. unless you wanna take pics of yourself easier.. then I guess you'll miss out on ffc. Not a day goes by I don't miss my mytouch..

I had the g2 when it first came out, but afraid that it wasn't going to get fully rooted (droidx), returned it. And now I'm picking it back up.

Regreting htc evo shift?

Nobody take me wrong but at times I kinda regret not going with the evo just because its forums are fast moving and really active. like I said none take me wrong because I love my shift its so smooth. I thought all android was like this but I'm proud to say my phone runs android smooth. I thought this phone was going to be a hit like the evo. I'm hoping in general things take off. Anyone having the same feelings about the evo shift?
Sent from my HTC speedy using Xda Premium
Development is going fine, most of the development goes on behind the scenes and there are a lot of non-public builds out there.
Most of the action is in the IRC right now. I'd say about 1/2 of the builds are on the irc only. Some of the best builds are on the irc, or released early with bug fixes in irc. Things have taken off, but it's mostly behind the scenes.
I don't regret getting a shift at all =P
In no way do i regret getting a shift
No regrets here! My girlfriend has the evo so I've played with it since it came out and this was my upgrade from the hero. I love this phone! Lol
Sent from my PG06100
I'm rooted but still running the stock rom. The phone runs smoother than the Evo (especially when running live wall papers) and battery life is much better when the phone is in use. I'm not blown away by the phone like when I first purchased the Evo, but I still think the Shift is a better phone. I thought I would miss the bigger screen of the Evo, but the sharpness of the Shift's screen almost makes up for it.
All I'm waiting for in a custom rom is one that has toggle switches in the pull down notification bar.
My perception of the Shift is that development does move slower than I had hoped/expected. That's just my perception coming from the Hero. (Not slighting those doing the good work.) However, my "regret" comes from personal tastes.
- I don't need a physical keyboard and the added bulk has started to bug me
- The keyboard slider isn't as tight as I feel it should be, and makes the phone feel a little more cheap that I'd prefer.
- Small design elements bother me (Chrome trim and circles, blue...)
The main "regret" feeling now comes from the Nexus S 4G that's rumored to be announced at CTIA. Likely selling the Shift to pick that up if it's released relatively soon.

Did you remove the plastic from the back? If you did, that's probably why. I left it on and it's pretty tight.
Ahh me too!i wish i would have waited for the nexus from sprint but my heros charger port failed so i had to get something fast.=/ im have faith for the shift development.the hero rom development was amazing!!it made me love the phone.Im just looking forward to what everyone can do with the shift also im hoping in a camcorder mod or something like the nexus one did =] im sure it is possible.im starting to get into cooking some roms and everything but i just havent gotten it all down yet.my shift makes me wanna learn though!alot more than my hero!and the keyboard does feel a bit loose after a while but ive always had that problem with phones with slide out keyboards.i just hope it doesnt mess up like one of my old phone that caused the screen not to be touch able anymore.Dont Regret!give it time!

^ Shift Faced
The Shift is still a young platform, give it time. The EVO has had almost a year head start on the Shift as far as development goes, so it's no surprise that the community would be booming over there.
I too had this same question when it came time to upgrade. As a Hero CDMA user, I enjoyed a fantastic, active community, even for a phone that was based on ARMv6. If a phone of that caliber STILL has a community as vibrant as it is, the Shift is SURE to foster a wonderful kitchen of ROM creation and hacking. We've already got some excellent folks on board (I'm looking @ you NFX!) and more will come as people upgrade their phones.
I much prefer HTC builds to the likes of Samsung. The slide on my Shift is taught and feels solid - I too left the plastic on the back / edges. When the time came to select a phone, I tried everything at T-Mobile and Sprint and the only phone that would have enticed me away from the Shift would have been the G2. That second gen Snapdragon / Adreno 205 rocks my socks. So fast, so smooth.
I love this phone.
(ps. I also did not want a physical keyboard, but I'm falling in love with it, ESPECIALLY when ssh'ing into a box or using the terminal emulator)

Evo to Evo Shift. I have a few inquiries.

On the difference between the Evo and Evo Shift.
Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am currently on the illustrious HTC Evo 4G, I am looking to make a prospective trade with a gentleman in my area from the trading site, craigslist. Now I have a few questions, first and foremost, have any of you fine people come from the Evo to this tiny beast? If so then what are your sentiments on said phone, the Evo Shift. Second, what does the battery life have in store for myself? Last and certainly not least what is the development of said device surmount to? I may have further question as my transaction draws nearer, until then I take my leave and await your replies with gratitude.

I switched from the evo to the shift. I'm happy with the switch. The phone is faster, and smoother than the Evo. Adjusting to the smaller screen size does take a little bit. I almost miss my evo because of the difference in screen size. Battery life has been about the same. Maybe slightly better, but I'm rooted, and running an overclock kernel, so the min speed is lower than on a standard kernel. Overall, I'd say battery life is a wash. I would gladly switch again.
Development isn't as voracious as the Evo, but you can have CM7, the Kingdom rom, with sense 3.0, and other various kernels, which allow for much greater overclocking than the evo ever had.
+1 on that. My wife has the EVO 4G. I like it, but I prefer my Shift a lot more. Another thing your going to want to do is check the ESN of the Shift your getting. Don't want to get something you can't activate. There are free online ESN check sites.

Make sure he doesn't install the 2.3 update, or you won't be able to root for who-knows-how-long. I bought one from a guy today who updated right before we met up, so I have to put it right back on eBay or CL if a new root method isn't found soon.
You can try the ginger bread root app... You'll have to google for it. Then hope you'll be able to flash the engineering hboot afterwards.

If its running android 2.3.3 and when you load into the bootloader it says "s-on" next to the radio version then its not rootable yet.
Thanks man, really appreciate it.
Also, if it wasnt able to be rooted, I read on the news that HTC was going to release a universal unlocker for the newer phones, will they also release one for the EVO?

The general consensus is that they will not be unlocking older phones so as to encourage consumers to buy the newer ones.
EDIT: There is always of course the possibility that an independent developer will find an exploit and give us the ability to gain root access to our phones. Some devs are known to be working on this now. There's no guarantee of course, but there is hope for those of us who were feeling hopeless.
OK, so the phone has android 2.2, so I automatically assume it can be rooted. Now, can someone recommend me a good rom? I know about cm7 and miui, but what do the devs here have to offer?

I really liked Deck's ROM; lightweight, few issues; great battery life when combined with Tiamat 3.3.7. It's basically CM7 with a lot of the extra clutter (language packs, etc) removed. It looks and acts almost exactly like Android on the Nexus S.
That was my daily driver. I also really liked playing with Synergy; it's feature-packed and has a lot of bells and whistles, and is a fun toy. I didn't like it for daily use, though. I am really into the KISS philosophy when it comes to my smartphone.
And what about kernels? Is there a good choice of kernels to sift through, or for the most part do the roms already come with the best kernel for the job..?

Well that's a question that is dependent on a few things:
Do you prefer physical or virtual keyboards?
Is the loss of a nicer screen worth a bigger screen?
The Epic could be a great phone if it had the developer support that the Evo had/has.
They don't even have an AOSP ROM.
YES, trade, then load synergy rls1, then freedom kernel, for root use unrevoked,

My personal opinion is that developer support is what makes the phone.
The Epic has a better core for performance and for battery.
If I recall correctly the GPU is better too.
The screen is nicer.
The keyboard sucks [because I hate physical keyboards]
But the developer support, comparative to the Evo, is nil.
Now, there have been signs of an increase in support but with the SGS2 coming it's hard to say how much will come to the Epic itself.
I actually just came from an epic to the evo since mine was stolen (which really sucked I loved that phone) but with the evo I've never looked back. I really liked the physical keyboard since I'm not a fan of soft keyboards but swype and mods alongside a much larger screen make up for it. Speaking of the screen, its no super amoled but its definitely one of the nicest I've used and and the phone overall is just beautiful. Battery is about the same for both in my experience. But like others have said the evo has MUCH better developer support. I remember I was using frozen syndicate Rom 1.2 before my epic was stolen ( back in end of may/ beginning of June) and they still didn't update I believe. Plus Samsung still hasn't released gingerbread for it and its being discontinued October I think. So all in all you should trade for the evo, definitely much better software support especially for a phone reaching its EOL, not to mention hardware (i.e. cases) Plus sense is just great

About to leave to go get my Epic 4g Touch using my dads upgrade. Gonna miss my Evo alot, but I'll still have it around for random business such as PC remote and whatnot. oh no.... I told myself I wouldn't cry... *sniff sniff* I LOVE YOU GUYSSSSSS

I switched to the NS4G after my Evo **** the bed, and I still miss it.
The Nexus has been far more reliable and has a slick form factor, but I have large hands and miss the brutish size of the Evo. Not to mention the dev support - with the nexus, you get your choice of AOSP, modded AOSP, or the single Sense 2.1 rom.
can u please elaborate on that pc remote thing?
thanks
that is the biggest reason I rooted my phone. I was getting tired of it and still have about 8 months to my upgrade since Sprint did awway with the yearly upgrade on the primary line. The ability to flash different ROMS has given it a totally different look n feel, improved my battery life and brought about new love for my phone. i have decided im not upgrading now until I can get a 4G LTE device and have 4G service in my area.
Having similar feelings. Will be getting something new very soon. Everything I know about android I learned from my Evo and this community. Pretty awesome.
