Video quality in Google Talk - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I bought this tab for the screen and ability to use the built in front facing cam for video chat with my wife and kids while I'm away for 5 months but while testing it out I've noticed the video quality is crap over google talk from my end. My wife's cam looks great. Is there anything I can do to improve the quality. Currently we are testing it over the same wifi connection.

interesting, i had the opposite effect, my camera looked fine but there camera look pix-elated, I assumed that there camera was the one with the problem.

I had an even different issue. Video and audio was about expected given the connection I had. However, the video of me slowly turned to 45 degrees during the chat. I saw it in the lower right of my screen when my dad told me. I restarted the tab but still it persisted. Anyone see this??

Strangely....

@piperp
This happened to me. There was a slide bar right above the picture of me while using gtak on the tab. If u slide it all the way one direction, right i believe, then it goes back to normal

@shawnwojcik
I thought the slider controlled a zoom level of the camera facing me. At least that's the effect I noticed when I tried it. The tilting picture started when I tried moving the tab to show them something next to me. It really made things worse. I honestly can't remember if I had the lock on the screen auto-turning turned on. I disabled it once this weekend for some reason and may have left it off which caused the problem.
In either case, next time I'll try your suggestion but that's a problem that needs to be fixed because it's really quite awful. Even after a restart of the tab it starts again.

My brief experience suggested the slider both zooms and enables some kind of facial recognition, so when you move, the background instead moves and your face stays central. This can lead to blacked out areas depending on your position in the frame, as well as a tilting background. It's also a bit buggy i found...

Number three isn't related to YouTube specifically, it happens any time you're supposed to receive the prompt to select an app to complete a given action, if you're docked or locked in landscape orientation, and haven't rotated the screen since the last reboot. The workaround is to enable screen rotation, then turn the device to portrait orientation until the screen rotates. (You can do this while the screen is half-dimmed). The prompt will immediately start working properly again, until the next reboot.
One problem not on your list is that the weather widget still randomly adds a half-line of blank space before the location, causing the temperature line to be cut off at the bottom. Also, the new "Last update" line places AM/PM after the date / before the time, rather than after the time where a native English-language speaker would place it.
Additional bug (possibly) - microphone
When chatting on Google Video Chat, and having headphones plugged in, the person on the other end can barely hear me. Take the headphones out and its much better.
Tried using the app called Voice Record which has sound level needle and tested the same situation with the same outcome. Mic is good without headphones plugged in, but once they are, the mic goes to like 2-5% input level.
Tried same on a friends TF with same outcome. Not sure if this is an OS issue or hardware/driver thing

I have the exact same issue (prime 1.7), and I'm pretty sure it wasn't here before on prime 1.6.
I have one issue with 3.2:
When I am trying to open file which could be opened with couple of programs screen become darker, but no table with programs to choose.
The same with all ROM's (Prime, Rewolver, original). When downgrading to 3.1 all works well.
Do anybody experiencing the same issue? Mine is B50

Yes, I have this problem too, maybe I installed a file manager app and the app clash with the build-in file explorer.
When I click the file name of a avi file, the screen becomes darker without pop up a app selecting windows. It seems that the system hangs when a file tries to link with a corresponding app.
Will this happens with the use of the build-in file explorer only?
On my mail, if i hit on a link on a message..screen goes dark also, the post above said rotate screen, now it works when rotated...bug!!! Another bug...I found...decaf coffee taste crappy...hopefully the upgrade the taste...
rotating screen really helps.
Thanks.
This bug doesn't efect any software installed. I have made fresh install with no any software Stock ROM with Nwflash. Bug comes after second reboot. no mater which ROM you are using.
With elder ROM's based on 3.1 no problem.
Anyway rotating screen helps.

Touch screen most of the time, unresponsive (takes alot of tapping for a respond), usually happens at the lower part of the screen,
Is it just me?
Was the 3.2 wifi issue solved with latest update patch, wifi drops out unless you designate static ip?
No problems with touch screen and WiFi for me.
I brought my transformer to Asus service center in my country, to complain about the white spots in the middle of the screen, they have agreed to replace my screen, is that right?
I thought they would replace the whole unit, hopefully the new screen will fix the responds issue

Hey thanks for this tip. The dark screen-pick app thing sucks and was making me insane. I definitely have this same bug on stock 3.2 with root. Other than that, I haven't had any major bugs except maybe standby battery life not being as good as before 3.2.

Snapchat camera issue?

Ok...something strange is happening when I use snapchat. I take a picture and than the app closes by itself and the camera refuses to work until I reboot...any other camera app will just gove a can nit connect to camera message until I reboot. Ill reboot and any camera app works (stock/instagram) but as soon as I try snapchat again...it auto closes when I take a picture and suddenly the camera wont connect again.
The strangest part is it was working fine earlier...ive been using snapchat since I got the phone with no issues...so not sure whats up...ive uninstalled and reinstalled...so not really sure what else to do...anyone have any suggestions? Anyone else experience this? Do you think maybe its hardware??? I dont think its hardware cause it works fine until I use snapchat...but idk cant figure this one out
Also, I have done notging new to my phone...no nee apps, no new mods, no new updates...nothing so there really is no reason for this behavior. Ill try odin later but im away from my oc at the moment and just wanted to get other peoples input
Edit: snapchat appears to be working again...still strange that that happened...makes me worried as I dont know if it was the hardware or app failing

Fine for me. No issues no lag
I've had the same issue a couple times. It's really weird. It only happens on the rear camera (the 13MP good camera) and only in certain scenarios. I tried to take a picture of my hammock, it locked up and I had to shut down. I took a picture of the ground, no problems. Hammock again, locked up. Flash on/off, doesn't matter. Weirdest thing.
I think it might be the camera software switching between white balances automatically (no proof to back this up, but since it matters where I point the camera, it has to have something to do with what the camera is seeing and doing in response to the scenery) and SnapChat might not play well with one of the white balances.
I just now took a picture of my driveway from inside my house, no problem. Took a picture of the hammock in the yard, freeze up. There's a lot of green in the hammock shot, I don't know if that has anything to do with it.
Have you guys factory reset. First thing I did when I turned it on
My girlfriend's s4 is doing the same thing she only gets it on the front camera but can make it do it at will she says it when the camera first turns on and is focusing and adjusting the color of you take a pic before it settles down it does what the op said.

i think your hammock is cursed o.o and i have no issues. it works fine on both front and back cameras in snapchat/any other camera app.
sorry to bump an old post but did anyone ever find a solution to this problem, its been happening to me on my gs4 from verizon. It will work then all of a sudden it does the same thing with the camera and just exits the app?
Same deal on my Galaxy s4 that is barely a month old. Everything was working perfectly fine until a couple of days ago when I try to send snaps using the rear camera.
Goes something like this:
- Take photo with rear camera, app crashes
- Screen freezes at the Snapchat 'loading' screen OR nonfunctional camera within the app (whereas everything else works such as receiving incoming snaps)
- Rebooting works from time to time, but the problem is reoccurring
- Tried clearing cache/reinstalling the app, no luck
It's starting to really get on my nerves.
I had the same problem. Snapchat force closes and camera starts to fail. I contacted the snapchat team and reported the problem. I got a reply saying that they are working on it. Maybe you guys should send them an email too and explain the problem you guys are having.
I have the exact same issue. I've not been able to find a work-around.
snapchat freezes on videos that are longer then like 2-3 seconds it seems... then i have to restart again to get the camera back...
Nothing is wrong with your phones. Snapchat is an extremely ****tily programmed app. What do you expect from a terrible iOS port?
I might suggest Wink! as an alternative, but it doesn't support video, but meh.
Yeah I have the same problem. It's fricken ridiculous. When will they fix this?

compass not working?

I tried a few random compass apps and none of them seem to work (the needle does not point to a fixed direction as I walked around). I tried this with and without wifi/data/location. Can anyone confirm this?
I really like everything else about the phone and I would hate to RMA this just because of the compass.

I still haven't been able to solve this, not sure if it's a software or hardware issue?
I've just managed to fix it, it was a calibration issue but I fixed it with a different calibration routine as the one in google maps did nothing.
Installed https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.brothers.compass
Then press the menu button at the bottom right. That goes straight into calibration mode with instructions.

After I finally got the November security update tonight, some of my Play store apps needed updating too. (I'll get to the point in a minute, I promise) One of those apps was Google Maps. I opened it & tapped on the location icon (so the image will turn as I do) & a pop-up came up stating that my compass was not correct & to turn it in several directions in succession to fix it. It may pop up for you too.
If you do not see that, do this: It asks you to hold your phone upright screen facing you (while in Maps) & fan it towards you then away, towards you then away. Then turn it in the air like the 4H queen wave, just twisting your wrist. Then while still facing you, rotate it to the left & right, like you're going to bang the sides of the phone on a table. Do each motion 4 times.
After doing that, the compass is dead on! Unfortunately, it doesn't hold the calibration after shutting the screen off though & backing out of Maps but it's a start without installing an app to do the same thing.

Yep me too. Thank god for XDA. I was thinking I was the only one with no compass (although a 5 minute drive showed navigation works fine). It isn't a deal breaker for me because...
Nearly everything else is just good on the money, great display but not natural white (bit like the old AMOLEDs from the Note 2 that I have) with no pink or yellow hues, great sound (except in calls, loudspeaker only uses bottom to play out the audio), superb fast and crisp camera especially the FFC (but bad stabilisation in videos), beautiful design esp in the frost finish, phenomenal imprint scanner, very good battery life seeing as I'm coming from the venerable Z3 (but it can vary wildly, rogue apps perhaps), excellent build quality as mine doesn't have any QC nicks or rattling noises (apart from the camera lens, which is par for the course), bluetooth works without cutting off via 'cupping', Maps is locked at 60fps for the first time in Android history (and uniquely on this Nexus only), charging is quick and I'm glad it is type C (very convenient).

Camera constantly refocuses when taking video

Hey guys, so I've been loving the phone in almost every way until today when I finally used it to take video for the first time. I bought a tripod attachment for my MXPE and was trying to film a short video of me talking in front of a blank white wall. When I went back to look, the video was constantly refocusing with a terrible zoom in/out effect. Now that I've done some testing it happens whether on a tripod, or in my hand. Even on a static background, it will eventually refocus. If there's any movement, whether I'm panning from side to side or something is moving on the video it will refocus. Here's a short example. Don't be fooled by thinking I'm doing some crazy trick with my hand here, it will noticeably refocus for any reason, including me just moving my hands while talking in front of it. Also keep in mind the phone is on a stable tripod, so any movement is entirely the camera or software. I just didn't want to get on camera or show significant parts of where I live. I've searched to see if anyone else has this problem and unfortunately all I found was a reddit thread with almost no responses. I should say I'm on stock, no modifications to my phone. The camera is set to save to internal memory so micro sd shenanigans aren't a factor either. I've used the stock app, Google Camera and Open Camera and they all exhibit this refocusing behavior.
So what's up, are other people experiencing this also, or is my otherwise great phone working with a somehow busted camera? It takes photos just fine, though now that I think about it, it does the same zoom in/out refocusing when I move the camera photo mode too. I remember trying to take a picture of a spider and the camera wouldn't stop trying to focus long enough for me to get a clear shot. Is this a software deal, or do I need to talk to Motorola? If it's a software deal, why is no one else talking about this?
Edit: I used the "focus lock" shortcut in Open Camera and was able to make it stop. But that means I can't use the default app or Google Camera. What the heck guys?
Its an issue in low light (indoors) when the subject moves. I submitted a complaint with video sample on the official forums and moto responded it was expected for thr camera to re-search for focus when the subject moves.
However I later received an email from the moto camera team asking them for more information which I provided. Who knows maybe they are trying to improve it.
This issue exists on the nexus 6 also and is much worse btw.
I've made the same test and got similar results.
It seems that each time a new element appears the camera tends to change the focus, it looks like it trying to adapt to the new situation.
I'm also no happy with this issue.
Please keep posting if there's any news from Motorola.
Yes, definitely. I shoot a lot of videos of people playing piano, and it's constantly refocusing because the hands never stop moving. :/
Hopefully, this will be fixed in the future.
I have been having the exact same problem recently. For me, it's not even when the subject is moving. Take this video of my son for example ( drive.google.com/file/d/12BqfnL7OoEvV3CSWim-OCgxiHID4mrMeFQ/view ). Notice that it keeps refocusing even though he and the camera are barely moving. There seemed to be plenty of light coming in the window. Is there no way to fix this?
FYI, I finally contacted Motorola Support about this issue because it is so bad, in my case, and they instructed me to send in my phone for repair. Twelve days later, I receive my phone back, and the camera still has issues with focusing while using the camera. I wrote them back to find out what they are going to do now, so I will update here when I hear back. This is SO FRUSTRATING. I would not advise buying a Moto X Pure for the time-being, if you want a functioning video camera.
You can lock focus on the stock camera app by long pressing the focus bracket. I don't know if this was added recently but I found this thread among several others on google search and none of them mentioned it. Cheers!
I forgot to update here after my debacle finished.
Motorola Support had me send in my phone again soon after I got it back from them the first time. I asked them why nothing changed with the phone, and the tech said they mis-marked the problem in their system as a problem with the flash. /sigh So all they did was replace the flash and return the phone. What a waste.
The next time I sent in the phone, they just went ahead and replaced the phone entirely. I got back the new phone, and guess what? Exact. Same. Problem.
I finally posted the video on YouTube where the camera constantly refocuses, and a user suggested downloading a totally different camera app, like "Camera MX." I did so, and immediately noticed a huge difference! I couldn't believe the majority of the focusing problem was caused by Motorola's buggy Camera app, but that does seem to be the case. Unbelievable.
So if you have this problem, download another camera app like "Camera MX," and it should help the refocusing problem a ton.

Problems with Selective Focus viewing - seems to interfere with another app

SOLVED!
Please help with an issue - I can take pictures normally with Selective Focus, but when I try to view it, Near Focus and Far Focus work OK but Pan Focus becomes greyed out half a second after going into the viewer and cannot be selected.
I was on the phone twice with Samsung tech support. The first time they told me to reset the camera settings and it worked. A few weeks later it stopped working and I set up a call with them again. This time they had me boot the phone in safe mode and it worked normally. They suggested that it interferes with another app and I should try uninstalling them and see what works.
Could you please suggest what kind of apps might be interfering? It would be a huge task to randomly uninstall apps one by one, I have 50-100 of them.
Are you sure there is a problem?
In case you don't know pan focus option will be greyed out and not available if the picture you take are very closed up which make the background blurred out too much to create a pan focus shot and this is normal.
Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
You're right! I did some testing and it works from farther away. I didn't know this and neither did the Samsung techs It makes sense now, from close up the near and far focus pictures are maybe too different to put together.
