hi,
I've recently been looking into buying a new android device....its primarily going to be used a secondary device (my blackberry is my primary device, although i have owned a G1 and htc hero previously, so not new to android)
So basically, i want something that can be used as a tablet mainly (added phone functionality is just a bonus)...and i was considering the dell streak, the new archos 7 or 10 inch, or the galaxy tab. So i was hoping some of you dell streak owners could point out some pro's and con's of your devices so that it can help me out in making a decision

well i tried that initially, and I havent really found a whole lot of useful information (maybe im just a noob when it comes to searching on forums)....if you could post some links to other threads i'd appreciate it (if thats not too much trouble)
The galaxy tab might look serious, the streaks portabililty makes it a winner, the tab's got a 7' screen but then you have that HUGE bezel around the screen, it's hardly pocket size.
2.2 vs 2.1 = Stickler
And i wish they would make thier mind up about the price, one minute it's 75% of an over glorified book reader (ipad), the next it's 25% more expensive!
Just look up some reviews online, Engadget and techradar did some nice reviews on it, and it gives you a good indication of how good, or bad, it is, except for the outdated software (which is all that they had to complain about).
Personally it has changed how I operate, I go on the laptop or computer much more rarely now, and its pretty nice, but really its like any other phone or tablet. Its hard to go wrong in the market right now

yeah i just took another look at the galaxy tab and realized what u mean about the huge bezel, i never really noticed it before, lol...and i hope they announce the price soon too!

yeah, thanks i've already read those reviews, but i just wanted to hear some personal opinions on the device...thanks for ur opinion!
oh, and just another question, has anyone had any experience with Archos? i've heard some negative things about their devices so dont want to end up buying one if its going to be a POS...
I had a Blackberry Bold as a main device and a companion tablet (Viliv X70) It sucks to carry 2 devices I can tell you that, unless you use a Man-Bag or something similar, I've been looking for a big screen and portability for a while and been stuck on Viliv brand but their products don't totaly convince me and carrying 2 devices is something I don't like. I have no complains on the Streak, comparing to a full windows tablet, the streak beats it because it does what I want, browsing, check e-mails, you tube, instant messaging, mp3 player, streaming, (only thing i hate about android it is the VPN L2PT flavor it just don't like it).
Dell Streak is the perfect device for being mobile, you will find yourself not using the BB and the computer much

Thanks for the advice...The reason im looking for a secondary device is because i travel quite a bit, so carrying two devices isnt that much of an issue since i can put it in my backpack along with my DSLR....so for me its more of an issue of which device (archos 70, archos 101, galaxy tab, dell streak) will suit my needs more (basically the same things that you've mentioned above along with some gaming)

The update to 2.1 has brought many advantages and a few niggles though nothing that I haven't been able to work around.
I think the Streak is about as big as you can go and still be properly 'portable' while the 5" screen is easy to read and sensitive to touch.
My only advice would be to get a good case for it, Streaks are more fragile than mobile phones.

thanks for the advice! Do you think you could elaborate on the streak being more fragile? I thought since it uses Gorilla glass that it might be able to stand up to a bit of abuse....
From what you can read here and elsewhere the screen is not proofed against knocks on its edge, it might be very strong when hit on its flat surface but the opposite seems true along the sides/corners. I reckon part of the problem is that the screen comes right to the edge of the device and has no buffer to protect it from sudden shocks. Also because the device is so much bigger than a mobile phone it's more prone to damage from bending stress in a trouser pocket.
It's expensive so it makes sense to protect it I say.

I think the Streak is awesome, a huge leap forward from my last phone. Ive always wanted something that could replace my laptop for basic tasks, gaming and multimedia and still make calls and be pocketable and this phone does exactly that. Software is a little unfinished at the moment but that's something very quickly resolved, I keep telling myself Dell pushed out a lame 2.1 update as they're already super busy finishing off the froyo update....
For you though, I might recommend a bigger tablet. If its a secondary device not really used for calls and sitting in a backpack then the more screen estate the better I say.
I love my phone, but personally, in your situation, I would get a bigger tablet since you don't need to make phone calls with it and you will be carrying it around in a backpack all the time, then def a bigger tablet.
Also, if the gorilla glass doesn't break on a fall, chances are that the screen underneath will....
thanks for the advice, i was also thinking the same thing, that since its going to be a secondary device (which i wont be making calls with) then it would make sense to get a bigger screen....now the question is whether to go with the archos or samsung....that largely depends on the price of the samsung (without a contract)....anyone have opinions on how good Archos devices are? i've never owned one, plus ive heard mixed reviews on their quality...
I don't have mine yet but I love the fact that it fits in my pocket and not my iPad.
I agree. Ability to have 2 free hands is a god send.
Movies look awesome man. I've been playing games as well and I love it. On the cons side, I don't like that the browser takes you to the mobile version of the websites.
There is so much to like. Everything feels a lot more natural. Typing, browsing navigation. Yum

I would have to say portability is the best quality. The biggest con for me is I can do everything on my EVO that the Tab can do. Im going to fully use my 29days to figure out if I want it or not.
7" is a great form factor for a tablet (sorry Steve). Soon there will be more competition in this field, but the build quality, large battery and full-featureness of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will be hard to match. I can see a few ways to improve the Tab: display with better viewing angles, refersh rate and lower power consumption, dual core Tegra 2 processor (although the software would need to take advantage of it), better camera, built-in software (driver and app) for FM radio chipset, worldwide integrated DMB TV tuner (currently only in some parts of the world), HDMI stand included with tablet (currently an expensive accessory), standard mini USB plug, . . . But otherwise the Tab is a pretty great device as it is now

The phone
Everything really. It really is 'one device does all'
When I'm on support duty, I need to lug around a netboot 'just in case' as well as my phone of course. Now can do it all from one device.
7" IS perfect. For me. (LCD Density app on the market helps get that little extra wiggle room, well recommended).
GF has an iPad that she enjoys, but she's getting frustrated by it's lack of flash more and more. Whilst she just uses it for email/browsing Perez whilst watching telly, it's been great. When she needs to do a bit of research, it's limitations are becoming clear. I've not had that issue. I've been able todo everything I need from it. (vnc'ing back to my linux box to handle work stuff, I have no problems with).
Also been able to setup my Everquest account to be able to be logged in and checked. Using vnc->Flash. It's slow, but it works. When I've tried todo that on the iPad, I've run into that whole 'no, you're not allowed todo that'. With the Tab (well, Android in general really), it's kinda the Unix philosophy, lots of little tools/apps that you can string together to let you work the way YOU want to.
Cons
hmm... Still annoyed that voice isn't as standard on the US models. That's just... well, stupid. Having to flash the euro rom works around it, but it's annoying to lose 3G for that. Unless it gets resolved properly soon (stock rom, and some app/mobile.bin that lets me use the mostly standard rom and get 3G AND get updates easily), I might look into the Skype/Google Voice solution that others have mentioned.
Wouldn't mind an earpiece so those rare moments I don't have the bluetooth headset, I can hold it up, and not mind looking silly. Maybe. Not sure. I'd like to have at least had the option.
The thing I really I love about my Tab is that it has turned my HTC Desire into just a phone, and my PC into something I just use during the day for work.
The Tab is now my primary method for internet and multimedia consumption when I'm not at my desk working.

The fact that it's small and I can stop downloading apps on my g1 that dosen't do well with many apps lol. Also I like that its not extremely light and dosen't feel too fragile.

This is one sweet piece of hardware. Actually, strike that. That doesn't do it justice.

Apple appeals to less intelligent people that thinks its fashion.
Imo the 10" tabs like ipad are to big and heavy to function well in the hands. It tire out my hands and you have to hold it in one hand to reach everything on the screen.
Its to big to have it with you all time and dont fit in the pocket. I can just take with me the laptop instead in the nice little bag.
I have the tab with me all the time. I dont have a phone with me anymore. It has perfect size and isnt to heavy. The screen resulotion does surfing better then on a phone and the 7" makes it easyer to see whats on it.
The sgt works well for chatting, atleast i can type fast as hell on it now. Almost the same as a regular keyboard.
Pretty entertaining games. Getting a little sick of Angry Birds now but there lots of fun game with pretty sweet 3D graphics.
Surfing works good altho the browser that came with the tab is a little stuttery. I use Opera most of the time now wich is super smooth for me and when i need flash to work or something isnt working correct in Opera i use Dolphin HD.
The screen is pretty good and watchin movies, reading books and magazines works great.
It feels realy good and sturdy even with the plastic back.
The battery seems to have no problem keeping up a whole day. I have bluetooth on the whole time, msn up and chatting alot, playing and surfing alot. Sitting next to my machine on my work and passing time with my little cute tab. And mine is going to get better because its still new. On my phone the battery time got a whole lot better after a while.
Hmm... what more, what more... Its just a sweet and imo perfect device.
The best is the screen of course. I love, love the big screen. At my office there are some hardcore iPad lovers and some Galaxy fans. And I have the biggest Galaxy screen!
I really like the brightness of the colors as well, everything looks so fresh and new. I get a lot of compliments from people around me, everybody wants to hold it. For me the 7inch was the deciding factor, 10inch is way too big for me, with my woman hands (at 1.60 m I don't have large hands). Working with the keyboard at landscape I can type really fast with just two fingers.
Considering I used to own WM devices before, I have to say I really, really like the Android platform. So I am not sure, that is the main reason but everything works really fast and downloads are easy.
I keep telling everybody that the Tab is a woman device, I can hold it in one hand, wonderful.
I think I haven't been this excited about a device for a long, long time.
It's 7" and fits right in one hand, the screen looks great, 2 cameras, I can type pretty fast with 2 fingers now, or swype. I do a lot of my writing on it while watching movie. And I can use it as a phone if I so desire.
Plus it's the best tablet that I can stick into my pocket and be on the go. Now I got to figure out whether I go for the T-Mobile or Verizon version first.

Same here, I don't have the Tab, & just sold my Evo, but it's like...... 7" isn't that much for something that is just a bigger Evo LOL, would really prefer 10"
But since I'm going to WP7, I may get one eventually, if not an Archos & flash it to get the official market. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with an iPad, I really don't know. 7" just doesn't do it for me since every smartphone with a touch screen I've owned has been 3.7" to 4.3"
& it's like, now they are already talking about their new Galaxy Tab. I think I'll wait for the thinner, faster version then.
Camera zoom would be nice too. I mean I can live without 720p recording.. I guess that's what smartphones are for instead of smarttabs?

I did not get the phone yet but I can say that you either love it or hate it.
Having owned dell streak , which is pretty much the same size as this one, I will love it.
Reason - the Screen. Once u get used to the size u will have any smaller screen.
My only recommendation is - If u get this phone and u feel awkward , dont dump it. Give it a few weeks. I sold my first streak and then missed it so much , I purchased another one.

coming from dhd, sgs2 and now the note. when you take the sgs2 its so small and poor!
some apps are not resized to the large screen, but thats only 5% of them. so you have a small window where you have to scroll like you did on older devices.
its fast and a good replacement for the sgs2.

Even though I use a tablet for drawing out quick notes - I still use my phone to make quick appointments with clients when I'm on the move.
If you already have a tablet and you always have it with you - don't buy it.
If your on the move a lot and/or do not own a tablet and/or don't always have it with you - buy it, it's amazing. If you want to show off, also buy it - people will be stunned by its size, resolution and display.

hi all,
recently my laptop started going up the creak so have been looking for a replacement.
anyway i saw this on offer at argos for 399.99 with dock, and was thinking of getting one, would you say its a suitable laptop replacement or should i get a standard laptop again?
i love android and am not a noob with it which is why i was looking at this haha will still try putting windows 8 on it though since i enjoy using photoshop and after effects but would be nice to have an android tablet to take on the train when im going on long jeorneys to see my dad

Its a great tablet but it really depends what you are using it for.
As a true laptop replacement, something you plan to use for work that requires third party programmes, it is just not realistic. I have found it has replaced my laptop in most situations that I would use my computer for entertainment (web browsing, youtube, videos etc), but for real work like data analysis, report writing, multiple monitors and true multitasking, my laptop gets the job done in half the time.
As for windows 8, definately dont buy this in the hope that you will be able to put windows 8 on it. I think the chances of that happening are close to zero. Ubuntu maybe, and remote desktop, yes, but native windows 8... i dont think that will ever happen.
All in all I would summarise by saying:
Tablet Pros:
Lightweight
Portable
No heat/moving parts
Insanely good battery life vs laptop
Detachable screen
Touch Screen
More enjoyable as an entertainment and media consumption device
Many games are more accessible, especially with touch screen controls.
Likely to be cheaper than a laptop
Laptop Pros:
Larger screen (for work)
Full OS means you will be much more productive
Most if not all of the advantages of a laptop come from the operating system so i wont expand on this.
It all comes down to one thing - what you want to be using it for.

I fully agree on this, I still use my laptop when I have to create more than just an email. For work the TF300T is only a benefit when it comes to reading a lot of documents. It saves time, for printing documents is not needed. Annotations however are a bit harder to make (as they involve typing on the tablet keyboard), but doable.
ok then brilliant thanks, see i do use it alot for graphic design but only when im out of the house sincei have a dedicated computer for that, other than that it will be for messing around on, playing games, youtube and web browsing so think i will have to get it btw wat do you think on the price?

i love my gfx and i love my tf300 but the 2 dont mix well lol, photoshop for android is a joke its nothing like the real version, but saying that do you know of any good gfx apps for android???
i dont know any at the moment since my only android is htc wildfire s lol not the best for much of anything haha, will try dual booting windows 8 if possible, then i can run windows for photoshop and android for everything else, will have a look for good gfx android apps though

I have a wacom pad already on my desktop and is the reason i like the GNote
I have tons of games for both android and windows and either one would be able to play all the ones i have for either OS. The laptop will be able to run my adobe suite though and the GNote wont.
What do you guys think? stick with my GNote plan or might i be short changing myself in the productivity department?

The note is definitely not a desktop replacement (no proper adobe suite etc, apps still have a bit of a way to go but are getting much better) but as for laptops... nowadays i hardly ever use my laptops unless i want to do a lot of typing. if you want the note as a side sketchpad or to do work up to a certain extent then it's a fantastic tool... the only thing similar is a tablet pc and those are $$$ and comparatively horrible for battery life so.
Personally i use my desktop anytime i need to get big things done fast but use the note 10 for quick sketches, small pieces and to draw on the go, or while sitting on my couch. Then i usually add the last few touches on my desktop.

No I'm not b trying to replace my desktop, just be a bit more productive with my some of my work when not near it and get rid of the needed to carry a sketchbook.
Think I'm gonna stick with the plan of getting the note. The power of the laptop would be nice but I think the portability of the note out weighs the potential benefits of the laptop. I can also save about 100$ getting the note xP

Note all the way mate. Was in a similar situation last year. Bought a laptop in the end, because I just couldn't see how the note would do what I wanted it to. Then I got a note a few weeks after and tbh the laptop is just sitting gathering dust.
For drawing I use either sketchbook pro (note version) or infinite painter pro and when combined with photoshop touch (which comes with the note) you get a hell of a lot of productivity on your hands, rarely needed to use the desktop. You will be amazed at just what you can achieve, well i have been anyway. Only package I'm really missing is a proper animation one. But I'm sure with time that will come and if not, theres the trusty ol PC in the corner.
I might be able to help, seeing as I had the same decision to make a handful of months ago, It really depends on the type of art your trying to make. I'm an illustrator that recently bought a Note 10.1 to do some sketching on the go. I use my Note to start the sketching stage of an illustration.I would not be able able to complete an entire illustration on the Note. It can't handle large files with a lot of layers(80mb). I normally use Photoshop and on the tablet I would be missing too many tools that I normally use. Only a handful of Android apps can open a pre-exiting .psd files with layers intact. Plus the screen is to small. My desktop setup is a triple 28" monitor setup with an Extra Large Intous4 tablet and 2 x-keys.
I used to use a laptop with an extra wacom, but unless your planning on sitting still for extended periods of time its not practical. It take as while get going each time and pack up. With the Note I'm able to use it while walking. The perfect example is shopping with my woman. While I'm waiting for her to move to the next store I can sit in the corner and sketch. This would not be practical with a laptop.
Even if that was not a issue, most laptop have a screens that have bad color shift when you move your head from side to side. I have messed up an illustration that I was working on because of this. Also the battery life on my laptop with constant use is a little over 2hrs. which is terrible.
Another option was to get one of new tablet pc's (slate) or new windows 8 pro tablets. I didn't go that route because of price. I don't want to be lugging around a 1000+ piece of tech around. Because I dismissed this as an option I didn't use any of these product hands on, so I don't know if there are any issues. There are some videos on youtube.
I mainly use PS Touch and LayerPaint. They work best with my work flow. I would only use PS Touch If it could open .psd files.
The android apps the the other poster mentioned are also the ones that I recommend. I would also like to add Layerpaint to the list. It's one of the few apps that can open .psd files with layers intact(PS Touch can not, it flatten the image).
If you want the natural media look I would go with Infinite Pro or Sketchbook Pro.
I your just using it for light sketching the think the Note 10.1 would be better. I you want to do completed work you might want to look into the new windows 8 pro tablets.

No I'm not b trying to replace my desktop, just be a bit more productive with my some of my work when not near it and get rid of the needed to carry a sketchbook.
Think I'm gonna stick with the plan of getting the note. The power of the laptop would be nice but I think the portability of the note out weighs the potential benefits of the laptop. I can also save about 100$ getting the note xP

no problem, as the other posters here have commented I totally agree with them, laptop + wacom = sucky. a tablet PC would be better... but I had tablet pcs, didn't like the weight + heat + noise + battery life and the digitizer is exactly the same. having the tablet pc would not be worth the doubled price IMHO unless you plan to be doing full work while you're travelling a lot? also, the new slate screens are not much bigger than the note, and usually stretched in a weird long portrait dimension it seems...
pretty sure you'll love using the note as a mini-cintiq (eg. i have a 20 inch cintiq on my workstation but i often just use my note instead cause it's so easy to whip out /turn on/ take anywhere)
I have been using Clover Paint on my note (cannot open psds or transform yet (in development) but i've found it great to work with once it's all set-up the way you want)

This would not be practical with a laptop.
Even if that was not a issue, most laptop have a screens that have bad color shift when you move your head from side to side. I have messed up an illustration that I was working on because of this. Also the battery life on my laptop with constant use is a little over 2hrs. which is terrible.
Another option was to get one of new tablet pc's (slate) or new windows 8 pro tablets. I didn't go that route because of price. I don't want to be lugging around a 1000+ piece of tech around. Because I dismissed this as an option I didn't use any of these product hands on, so I don't know if there are any issues. There are some videos on youtube.
I mainly use PS Touch and LayerPaint. They work best with my work flow. I would only use PS Touch If it could open .psd files.
The android apps the the other poster mentioned are also the ones that I recommend. I would also like to add Layerpaint to the list. It's one of the few apps that can open .psd files with layers intact(PS Touch can not, it flatten the image).
If you want the natural media look I would go with Infinite Pro or Sketchbook Pro.
I your just using it for light sketching the think the Note 10.1 would be better. I you want to do completed work you might want to look into the new windows 8 pro tablets.

i was considering won 8 pro tabs but looking at the price and the fact that i tend to work in alot of layers the atom processors would take a dumper in my case. I usually work in large dpi/res images with many layers which my desktop is perfect for. I'm wanting something with protability and the power to do alot of the desktop stuff but i suppose ill have to make a bit of sacrifice which is ok, the note will be a good way to start my images with sketches and such and i can do the painting and effects on my desktop

i wish i had $ for a 20" cintiq T^T ill have to save because thats the one thing i dont like about my tab on my desktop right now is i feel sorta disconnected from my work. Its also why i was looking at the note as a sketchbook/media device so it looks like im making a good decision skipping the laptop for now. I really like using Sketchbook Mobile on my GNex so i will only like Sketchbook Pro better on my Note im sure

I guess it kind of depends on how much you're willing to spend. The more you would want to do on the go, the more you'll have to spend. The Note 10.1 will not exactly handle more than an Atom-based x86 Win8 tablet either. The difference is that because you're running Android, you're not gonna have apps that will overload the processor (aka you can't shoot yourself in the foot). But, one of the major benefits of having Win8 is being able to run desktop class software. It may not be able to handle Photoshop, but it can probably handle the likes of Sketchbook Pro, Artrage, and Paint Tool Sai.. and the desktop versions of these apps will probably be more powerful than their mobile counterpart (not sure if Sai has a tablet version out there).
That being said, I have the Note and an i3 Lenovo laptop w/ an Intuos/22" monitor.. and between these two I'm perfectly satisfied. If you add the multiwindow mod (multiwindow for any app) for the Note, then you'll almost have a desktop like experience on the go.
I think it was already mentioned, but the main advantage of the Note over the Laptop+WacomTablet is the portability. Since it sounds like you're going to use your desktop for more careful work anyway, you probably will get more out of the Note's portability. By the way, how is TVPaint in terms of its usage, relative to desktop class software?

Yea, my budget is about 500$, so 1000$+ win8 tabs with decent processors won't be an option. Ik the note won't handle more, its just like you pointed out that android apps are lighter. I've use Sketchbook mobile and its for the most part the same as the desktop version. I think from the comments here I'm not gonna regret getting the note c:

I remember seeing your colours on the paint/sketch thread here, nice work!
anyway, the cintiq I bought secondhand off ebay and it was probably the best working investment ever though the $$$ did hurt somewhat. it was 1200 used, ended up 1600 ish with shipping/tax. would have been cheaper if I didn't live in Canada you can get pretty good deals if you don't mind shopping around on ebay/craigs etc.it speeds up my workflow at least 30%.

there's an open beta that you can sign up for, it is actually THE desktop software ported onto android so it's fully functional afaik and very powerful. but god knows how much they will end up pricing it at.
