Task Killers, Juice Defender + Deep Sleep on 2.2+ - XPERIA X10 General

Hi all,
I know this has been covered 100s of times and before you say it yes I did search it but I cannot find "the" definitive answer.
I am on 2.3.3 CM7.0.3 J022 and its awesome + v stable. Thanks to J, Z and everyone else involved
My only issue is the battery. I'm getting around 8 hrs. Although that is improving after installing Juice Defender. I am worried about "deep sleep of death" from it so left the governor disabled and just change the settings manually. Would I be OK to let JD sort it?
Also I installed the Task Manager that JD advises (process manager) but it appeared to be malfunctioning so I scrapped it.
My question is, is it worth re-installing it? Are there better ones? Are they a total waste of time on 2.2+?
Thanks in advance.
SE X10i 2.3.3 CM7.0.3

I don't use task killers anymore for anything I run on my phone.
Try it. I let the android system work itself out. gingerbread does our the best in my opinion

That is what I figured. Juice Defender seems to work, but it isn't a task manager, it controls connectivity.

For best battery life on GB/Froyo, you should only Run autokiller with the tweaks i recommend and no JD or any other thing! Look for my thread in development forum.

i am running the same rom and find that green power is all i need. p.s. 8 hours aint bad dude...

I agree 8 hrs is OK..
... I was getting 20+ on 2.2.freex10 beta4
My issue seems to be with "radio" which I assume is signal, mobile data etc

Install CPUSpy from the android market and check to see if your phone is getting into the deep sleep state at all. If it isn't then Juice Defender will be able to help a bit but you'll still burn through your battery at a fast rate.
If you don't have deep sleep occurring when the screen is blank, you could try disabling automatic time update in settings. That is what many of us have to do to get the phone to deep sleep when running a ROM using a custom kernel.

OK installed CPUspy - no deep sleep.
Turned off auto time setting - still no deep sleep.
I have been switching the CPU myself from 998 when it use to 245 when not, this does help but top of battery useage is always mobile standby. That's signal right?
Over the past 2 days JD has seemed to help, it reckons it has doubled the battery life but I think that its blowing its own trumpet a bit there.

Have u tried loading FreeKernel 3.51 from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112745
I am running CM7.0.3 too. After having installed the FreeKernel and Juice Defender, I get about average 20+ hrs of use per charge.

Just an option, why don't you leave flashplayer behind and check out ericks 2.1 with custom kernel....
You'll have 3+ days battery on medium use.
It's great to be able to watch youtube for 3 hours and go from 100% to 85%..
With heavy use I get about 35-40 hours

3 days is unreal, but 20 hours is good enough. You only really need it to last 15-20 hours.
But it is good waking up after 2 days work without charging it and it still being on 40%

Juice Defender (with the Dinc 2)
Hi guys! New registered user here! I got a Dinc2! First off, thank you all for the advice and recommendations on how we can pump up the performance of our Droid Smart-phones!!
I am using "Battery Indicator" app for my Incredible 2 and for some odd reason this app in itself has saved some of my battery life! Now that JUICE DEFENDER worked out some kinks and has a full version for free (Version 3.5.6)....I am seeing that it does help your battery life!!! Today I am doing a complete test with Juice Defender running (on the default setting J.D. came with) I will absolutely make sure that I UPDATE everyone on here with how Juice Defender worked for me.
Also if anyone has some customized settings for their Juice Defender for the HTC Dinc2, I would really appreciate it! This is my first smart-phone so I am kind of new to all this but I have been doing some in-depth research for the last 2-3 weeks. Very happy to find a website like this, so I can keep up with everyone and what is new, and what Apps can be counter-productive to the performance of our phones.

Now that deep sleep is working I am getting a loss of 1% over 8 hours (night) which is better than when I was on stock and 2.2
Juice defender works a treat. I can leave WiFi GPS and mobile data ON and it'll sort it out for me while keeping me reasonably up to date with emails,Facebook and even Latitude (although latitude is a bit hit or miss).

Last few days I tried Juice Defender and Green Power.
Both of them worked as they should on Froyo MIUI, but turns out they do more harm than good.
My phone was constantly hot and charged very slowly. It could have something to do with my ROM entirely, but all in all, I was not impressed.

Did you use a JD preset?
Did you download JD beta?
Reason I ask is I have none of those issues and as it turns out CM7.0.3 has all the features that JD offers. JD just does it all in 1 neat package.

They are only good when U aren't rooted. But since I'm rooted there are better apps, like AutoKiller en SetCPU to save battery... And they work MUCH better and won't do any harm.

[Q] Help me to choose BETTER Battery Saver APP. :)

I bought my Xperia X10 last August 18 '10. I didn't have the initial charge that is 4 hours because X10 charging have automatic stop when the battery is full.
I charged it in the morning and it run for 24 hours just SMS and phone calls.
Then I try to install Advance Task killer and Helix Launcher. Task killer really makes my battery WORST! Instead of 24 hours life it became almost 12 hours only.. Helix is most probably not working. (I think.)
I uninstalled Advanced Task killer and no difference..
I would like to install Battery Life saver application but I don't know what Launcher fits best. I tried Helix but I think I doesn;t work better for my X10.
I envy other users that there phone last for 2-3 days. I want my phone just like that..
Any suggestions what launcher or application? and where can I download it for free?
Thank you so much XDA DEVELOPERS!
wat firmware version are u on ? i found that it took 15-20 full charges for the battery to really break in...as well dont use task killers, they arent necessary. I used juicedefender for a bit, but didnt really see a difference. another helpful thing you should try is to restart your phone after charging
another app you could try is setcpu, however that requires root
Try adw launcher
Sent from my rooted 026 X10i using swype via Xda
My suggestion is root the phone, use ADW launcher and uninstall any task killer apps like ATK or JD. My X10 lasts 2 days with moderate usage, that includes games and music too. It'll last three if I only use it for texting and calling. Hope this helps
Agreed, ditch the "powersaving" apps, they kill standby time. Also check how synchronisation is set up, constantly waking up to update facebook, twitter, mail et cetera will kill your battery.
Can only agree with the other posts, and just to re-affirm that you need to cycle the battery a good few times to get the best from it and three days is still early days. ADW is a great launcher, you don't need to be rooted if that's out of your comfort zone.
My way is NOT using any task killers or battery savers, leave all that to android! Do 3 full charge/decharge cycles and one every ones in a while. And ofc 2-3h of youtube will drain your battery.

quite interesting point about task killing app.
I heard in both side while app-killing save a batt and drain a batt.
May be people are in difference behavior. and their using s/w is also difference.
Any specific thread for this?
My first (few) days for x10 is like you, twice or triple charge a day, I even bought spare batt. I decided to root and upgrade to the lastest firmware, clean all startup app, clean all scheduled sync and turn on juicedefender with new home-app. that was big improve from 7-10HR to 20-25HR with moderate use.
You should give a try
Retracted: I misread the post mentioning JuiceDefender as being about ATK. My bad.
I currently only use juice defender, seems to do the trick. Task killers made no difference to me.
Research how android works and you will see task killers are pointless. Just stop things doing automatic updating instead.

How can I root the phone? where can I download ADW Launcher for free? Whew I hope my X10 will be better like yours
i get about 20 hours of fairly heavy usage before charge however i am on build number R2BA020, running helix launcher and setcpu (screen off @ 524mhz scaling on demand)
my approx usage a day:
50 texts
10 emails
hour on phone calls
wifi usually connected
gps off
update interval usually the longest duration
30-45mins of web browsing
@ ddewbofh : Where can I find it? Sorry for the stupid question. I'm starting to learn for now.
@ suzed : I already downloaded ADW Launcher, does it really have automatic task manager? If I use it, it will affect my battery or not?
@ Tjotte : I want battery saver because I can't bring my charger always. I already had 3 cycles of full charge/decharge, still no change.
@ Cebees : How will i root and upgrade the firmware? Can I do it all by myself? Do I have to reformat my X10?
Thanks for the replies! It really helps me a lot. I'm still observing how ADW Launcher works for me. Hope for your comments and suggestions again (sorry for the poor english)
I want to clarify something. Is ADW Launcher a battery saver or just for themes? My friends says it's not a battery saver. I want to know, I'm confused.

Extend the battery time on your Xperia™ X10

well... there you have it.
we all have our X10's and are happy with them (for the most part)... yet we suffer the horrible battery drain issue ... and while some have managed to squeeze an hour or two more out of the battery SE has taken the time -- mind you -- not to release an update that could make a difference but to make a video telling us what we already know:

What's your point from this Thread??
This video was produced while the X10 was running 1.6 OS and many were complaining about the battery life at the time
you're linking a three months old video to tell us..... what????
Everyone knows by now that the 2.1 update made the X10's battery better and lasts longer now, even longer than your Samsung Galaxy S

fine. 3 months old ... so what?.. i thought it was funny. i just bought my phone (AGAIN) after the first time i bought it when it had 1.6. and now i have the x10i with 2.1 (and dualbooting into 2.2).
and NO... your facts are very wrong. the galaxyS battery lasts MUCH MUCH longer. i have both devices in my pocket. my intentions were to hand the galaxyS to the wife and keep the SE/X10 ... side by side the galaxyS (sad to say) is much faster, better battery and yet still. i have installed froyo 2.2 and am dual booting on the X10. guess what? 2.2 while still alpha is faster/better and just better to use.
this goes to show what? SE just loads the phone with crap software that hinders the phone and makes it look bad.

Good to hear your Galaxy lasts more than your X10, but that's YOUR device. Many here have their X10 going for two days and more with constant usage.
Bottom of line is: there is no right or wrong here so don't take personal...

I am still diving in the X10 forums and as you know there are 3 important sections each having threads that last go beyond 30 pages. The search function doesn't help sometimes.
I personally believe my stock rom maybe the issue. still hunting for a good custom 2.1 rom thats somewhat customized.
if you can point out some tips / links to how i can achieve this "2 day" mark you talk about i would be grateful.
Thanks!
If you went to developers section you can find a topic named "2.1 optimizer V002" by jerpelea
Or something like that it's on the first page of the section so you don't have to search for it
Basically it cleans all unnecessary apps and installs JIT to increase the performance as well

i've done the optimizer cleanup and jit. (steps 1 and 2). there were other stuff like TEST scripts but i skipped those.
Any other tips?
Try using normal wallpaper instead of live wallpaper, use wifi at home, install juice plotter and enable the widget to let you know the battery's estimated hours left
Un-install timescape since it uses a lot of process.
Oh and do not us auto killers as they kill your battery very fast
Un-install it if you still have it or at least disable the auto kill ( I rarely, almost never kill any app , unless uni suspect that it uses a lot of process )
Last but not least use your phone for more than three days as with each day you'll notice improved battery life, since android takes a bit time to adjust itself.
And that'd what I've done, so far I can take it up to 22 hours of constant usage, three hours of music, one hour playing games, twk hours browsing, email push, whatsapp and gtalk running non-stop. 3g always enabled with half an hour talking and over 100 sms.
If using my phone lightly it goes to 44 hours with 20% left

I haven't tried freezing the apps like timescape.. etc but as I understood from other members who tried freezing it did not help them too much
try backing up the apps you don't want and then un-install them.. However, one of the major battery drainers is timescape, but as I mentioned before you have to Freeze/Un-install it and all of its components...
I'll keep it simple here:
backup applications first
Uninstall/Freeze:
- Timescape Theme Sakura 1.0
- Timescape Theme Orange 1.0
- Timescape Theme Indiago 1.0
- Timescape Theme Green 1.0
- Timescape Theme Blue 1.0
- Timescape Provider 1.0
- Timescape Plug in Manager 1.0
- Timescape 1.0.0
- Creatouch 3.0.4
- Any other unnecessary applications that you don't use
Install:
- JIT ( Just-In-Time ) to make your device faster and less power consuming
- Juice plotter ( and add the widget to your screen to get more information on how long will your battery last )
DO NOT USE:
- Auto Task Killer ( it really drains a lot of your battery )
- JuiceDefender
- Any other battery saver applications
-----------------
you can of course use Task managers to kill any application that you think it uses a lot of processor, otherwise leave your ram uses whatever it needs. ( don't aim for more ram space because it's useless, this is not Windows )
if you did all that then you should be fine.... I know because I did all that and while I'm writing this post I'm listening to music using my X10 (Wifi on, Bluetooth connected to LiveView) for 4 hours now ( Un-plugged it at 100% ) and now it's at 83%
i had done most of your advises already including freezing ts and some other apps. i never use task killers. juice defender had been uninstalled as i found it wasnt useful to save juice. something i havent done is the installation of jit. will it be a key to improve the battery performance? where can i download it as it doesnt exist in the market.
my phone is fast and laggyless without rooting. the major perpose of rooting is to extend the battery life. i thought it would be helpful because the uninstallation or freezing the useless apps became possible. to my dissapointed, till now, i havent had the pleasure to enjoy the benefit.

Badly programmed widgets or apps are the usual causes of battery drain. Have you got anything that might be preventing your phone from sleeping.. Eg.seems to be a bug on handscent which absolutely
knackers the battery if you leave a message un read..
I've switched back to stock sms for the moment because of it.

*update, as promised* How my atrix is getting me 1day 15hrs of battery life...

I wish i could do a screen shot....but with 8% battery life left and already downloading all the SS programs in the market, it wont be done.
I haven't charged my phone for 1day 15hrs 39mins, and still have 8% battery life.
Using nothing more than the built-in Task manager (aka performancemanager.apk) i have been testing my phone out to maximize battery.
Display has been auto
no task killers downloaded
setcpu profiles active
launcher pro with 7 hopmescreens all full with widget5s and programs
over 200 apps downlloaded from market
background sync on
no lwp on
no battery reconditioning done to my knowledge
i will be writing a more indepth walk through on my settings, apps, and how i use setcpu profiles within the next couple hours...hope this helps others, please thank me if it did
*update*
Hope SOMEONE gets some good out of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12448008&postcount=22
I can use my phone over two days without charging it and all I did was...nothing. I think the people who have problems with battery life are those who aren't at all familiar with how Android (and Android apps) work/s.
How long was the Display on?
just under 3 hours, just to reply to emails/texts, phone calls and a little gps/market browsing.
someone gave this a one star, nice...well i guess if no one cares about details i will just have the mods close thread...
Why make threats. Just close the thread down if that's what you want to do.

I only started using Android with my Atrix. I did have a rom on sd for my Tilt2, but that was not even close to Android goodness. And phobos512, the very thought that you voiced is exactly what I am after. Any chance that you could point me toward an explanation or elaborate about how Android and Apps work.
The upcoming guide from justflorin will be like having a fish handed to me. What you speak of will teach me to fish.
Thanks to you both in advance.
I would definitely be interested in hearing some more about this being new to android. I'm currently averaging around ~14 hours I think from unplugged to 5% or so...

I can make it a solid day usually but my display is on longer than 3 hours easily. If you leave your phone alone of course the battery isn't going to drain as fast.

I can EASILY last two and a half days if I wanted to. SETCPU is set to 760 Max, goes down to 400 some when screen is off. Battery manager is maximum profile (honestly besides email, why do you need apps to constantly sync??).
Best phone and battery I have EVER had.

I'm getting 1d 15 hrs on average... I'd say usually about 1d 18 or 19 hrs.
Dude, im using launcher pro too. 7 screens, almost exact same setup. No task killers. I get 30 hours, you're absolutely correct.

if hes syncing emails and social media theres no way he gets that kind of battery life. im currently on 24 hours of phone idle with 1 hour of display time and 50% left but thats with all account sync off but i do have background sync on for stuff like weather widgets. its no secret just turn off stuff that sync like emails, calendar, contacts and FB and you will get great battery life.
oh btw i know how to enable HSUPA and if you guys give me 100 thanks i will post it...

Okay. I just said thanks 100 times. Give it up!
ugh
dont see how this is possible imo.
i only use sync on wifi seeing as how i got the cheapest data plan known to man.
hardly text ever. just answer 10-20 phone calls a day. Play a few apps around 30-40min. a day the rest of the time its locked unless i check the time.
screen is on auto 5 screens on home screen with around 3 widgets on each and my battery last @ 14hours. at best

Battery optimizing [MIUI]

Oct 26 2011
ROM: MIUI 1.10.21
Kernal: [email protected] (oct 25th 2011)
902max 122min DARKSIDE
radio stock panache
been connected to wifi this whole time
and I got 84% @ 3 hours 46min. I expected 5hrs.
Im tryin to find out what the hell is draining my battery:
Watchdog app? yahoo messenger? rogue apps? (check out pics below!)
Does anybody have a suggestion for looking for the rogue apps besides watchdog lite? or is that the best one.
Any suggestion for tweaking settings? Ive included pics of whats running

1. looks normal, cell standby is usually the highest on MIUI. how long was your display on?
2. your OC settings look a little high for everyday use. I would try to OC lower and use the superbad governor. my settings are 1017/122 superbad and everything runs smoothly
3. looks like messaging and settings are taking up some memory, try killing those with the task killer. hold down the home button and a window will pop up, on the bottom there is "task killer"
4. looks normal with your OC settings
*edit* Battery Calibration app from the market also works really well, give it a shot. charge your phone til its 100%, and leave it plugged into the charger. run the app, calibrate your battery, then unplug and youre done
Thanks! Ill definitely make those adjustments and post results in a similar time frame. I didnt know I had a built in task killer ... dam i just freed 142MB! woohoo!
oh and what the heck is this? (in pic)

wow lol Ive never seen that before probably just give it a few days for your battery to even things out and settle in. it said your battery was in use for 3 seconds so just wait
LOL battery consumed 15% in half the time than previous. I DL'd battery calibrator, lowered setcpu to 1.2ghz w/onDemand. I wonder what is involved with android systems.

if you tap on "Android System" itll show a list of all the apps and things associated, from there you can pinpoint on what is using up your battery and just kill that app. I also noticed that youre on MIUI and you have a screenshot app...you know that function is already built into MIUI, just hold volume down then tap the menu button. theres a list of all kinds of neat little button quirks in the OP of the thread

Well, here is my 2 cents.
Keep i'm mind that I had pandora running continuously for almost 5 hours. I unplugged my phone at 11 am. It has been running for almost 13.hours..
I have noticed that if my phone is hooked to a wifi signal, the battery last easy 3 times more.
3 days ago I had it running for 14.hours and it was still at 74%, of course, very little use, since I was a working all day
Second image you can see that I have been keeping the screen on for 3 hours

So today I jus setcpu!
Here is the adjustment and activities I did today in regards to battery usage:
Set CPU @ 1.1ghz smartass (same performance)
unplugged for 5hrs
4hrs using data: yahoo messenger, internet browse, gtalk
used ubermusic in traffic (bumpin "ni**as in paris" on repeat LOL)
1hr on wifi (unless wifi was automatically turned on at the mall)
no calls (TY columbus day)
Tried to take a pic at 85% to keep it consistant as the first pic. LOL
Ill be traveling this weekend so im gonna put the GPS to work.
I used GPS the other day @ 1.6ghz and the latency was so minimal
with reroutes being spoken after maybe 200-500 ft of a turn not taken.

O use MIUI.us .
I'm going to post you the progress during the day today.
I'm unplugged the phone at 9 am, right now is 11:22pm and I still have 61%
As you can see I have been all day hooked to a wifi. If i'm not in a wifi, I would be at 20% I think
Btw, my display says 48 min , so you can see that I didn't use my phone that much, I have been.working all day
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
As general information, what I did was:
Wipe everything
Install ROM
Factory reset
Install my basic apps
Drain the battery to zero
Charge it all the way to 100%
Calibrate it with the app on the market
let the battery die again til zero
Charge it again til 100%
After the second day, it was going.better
Fyi, if I am constantly on non wifi networks, it goes down faster.
And i'm using panache radio
Hope it works for you

The person before you recommended that tactic ... and I have done so to help with the result ive got.
Here is my next hurdle:
CELL STANDBY
I believe CM7 or RoyalGinger had an option to manipulate cell standby while on wifi networks. Since im not using MIUI ill be researching this to get rid of this issue.
Thanks to the replies and xda this is the longest ive had my phone unplugged @
21 hrs (i had to plug my phone via usb for 2min to get something from my SD card cause I was impatient to figure out how to send it wirelessly, so no screenshot)

to help with the Cell Standby, while connected to wifi, set your mobile network to 2G/GSM only in the mobile network settings. prevents your phone from trying to connect to 3G/4G which saves battery as well

no problem bro. yep, running TDJ's Darkside Runny v1.5.1 and its the best Sense build Ive ever flashed. along with the blissmod and quicklaunch widget, its just bad ass. I was a religious MIUI user, but this rom just drew me in. of course the battery life is shorter on Sense builds due to the UI and all the eye candy and bloat, but after 19+ hours average on a full charge, Im not complaining one bit
Do you get commission selling sense roms ? LOL dammit MAN!
i would switch up if i could get 19hrs on sense 3.5. I like its UI interaction (ie text message has address and I can highlight and go straight to navigation)
My issue aside from battery is the widgets not loading correctly on sense 3.5. Do you get that?
With all that eye candy, bloat, etc What do you run your processor at? is it still 1012max superbad?

nah, never had any problems with the widgets. everything works for me as it should. yeah Im still running 1017/122 superbad on Sense as well, no problems at all and everything is still smooth. I dont play games on my phaone, so I mainly browse the net, text, call, listen to music, etc...sync only when needed and OC when needed also.

In the next days I will try the new battery that I bought, it.us a 1700 capacity.

serious drain even with speedmod

Hi.. I upgraded to the German ICS 5 days ago..
my baseband is N7000XXLPT
and build # is IML74K.XXLPY
and I put on the Speedmod 3.3 Kernel.
And i STILL have serious battery drain... I mean.. It wont even last half a day with not alot of on time as before with GB..
Can you please offer me some suggestions?? thanks.
thanks again..
Im at my witts end for a first time flasher...
Do a full charge and download CPU spy to find out if your phone its entering deep sleep, also check the battery stats for some clues as to what's causing it, finally go to task manger and go to the storage tab and select battery motoring.
This should identify any apps that are hogging battery / CPU.
If nothing its found, perform a full wipe.

A week ago i was having the same issue. It will run at max 8-9hrs. I needed to bring the charger at work for it to last until i get home to do another full charge. I have the same kernel and rom (LPY and speedmod combo). Serious battery drain abt 3-5% per hour doing absolutely nothing.
I did a little research and with the help of betterbatterystats i found out that the culprit is audioout_1 as betterbatterystats reported that audioout_1 wakes the phone from deep sleep.
By any chance do you have keytouch sounds on?
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
People here will suggest cpu spy and better battery stats for you to PERSONALLY find what causes your problem.
Installing speedmod will not perform magic in your phone, but its a start in the right path.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda app-developers app
thanks for the replies gang.
I went to bed at 82% and in airplane mode.\Woke up to 42%.\CPU Spy saus only 2% deep sleep.
I dont have any sounds on. Alll sounds off except to vibrate on screen tap.
Im on the battery monitoring now in task manager.
My next step would be to purchas Bettery Battery Stats to pinpoint the programs preventing from going into deep sleep..
thanks for the answers again, gang.
**Question though***
under Task manager / Storage / Battery Monitor ...
Start monitoring..... then what? What does that do? I small icon shows up on the top status bar.
Then what? What to do after turning on Battery Monitoring? [email protected]!
Since we have different apps installed, you need to find out what app or process preventing your phone from going into deep sleep.
It's a pain I know but no other choice.
And you don't suspect speedmod?

No. speedmod goes into deep sleep for me without any problems. In his case it's an app that keeps the phone awake

I'm using Stock ICS kernel without deep sleep problem. Check sync options I ever found some app triggerred deep sleep problem while it's set sync ON.
thanks guys and gals for your comments..
I felt that youse were right in the fact that it was MY problem. within my GNote.
So I read and re-read other threads too & something caught my attention.
Someone said that maybe folks installed some sort of "messenger" or something that keeps "reaching out" to see if something is there for it.
And I remembered installing Yahoo Messenger to chat with this nice dame. about the same time frame when I went to ICS
Well...
I uninstalled Yahoo Messenger and WALLA!!!..
Back to deep sleep! And I got my battery back!
Thanks again for all the replies and comments.
They really help.
I hope my solution helps others out.
Try IM+ chat app it doesn't have problem with deep sleep. You can use yahoo login also.
