How to take advantage of microsd slot? - Acer Iconia A500

How do I use it besides from roms and such? I can't play music, video or emulator roms off of it.

Not sure what you mean, all my music and videos are stored on my 32gb microsd, and I have no problem playing them without transfering them to the main memory.
When I add new music to it, the stock music player picks up the new tracks automatically, and mobo, which I use for video allows you to set the default directory to search for files it can use. Just select the file icon from the main menu and press the back soft key until you see the external sd listed.

I'm gonna have to recheck because it couldn't find anything on my sdcard before. Thanks.

should be pretty simple
Your external SD is located at /mnt/external_SD - i either use a external microsd reader or ES file explorer to copy files to my MicroSD - after copy you may need to reboot your a500 to have apps pick up on the files. I use a free great app called "SDRescan" - free from the market, no supported ads or anything like that - it will force a rescan of your media without the need to reboot.
Hope this helps - i keep my music and my camera/video recorder files on external SD and have no problems accessing them from any app I use.

Problems solved. The app I was using wouldn't allow it to scan anything besides sdcard instead of ext_sd (or whatever it is).
Is there any way to cut and paste (in ES File Explorer) between the two? It fails every time I try.

Using es file explorer
Cut/paste to the microSD card fails every time.
Work around - copy/paste - then delete files from the source after confirming copy was successful. Works fine for me

+1 for SDRescan. It took a couple of attempts before my media showed in the music player though. Kinda annoying, but bearable

Glad i could help
SDRescan is a must have tool for me - much faster to run it and force rescan then wait for a full system reboot. I usually find waiting for 10~ seconds after running/closing it works like a charm.

Orange M3100 seems to corrupt storage card (Media Player)

Weird, This is the 2nd device I've had and both do this...
I sync music to the card, Media Centre picks the music up, but then after a reset it all goes wrong:
The next time I start MC, it doesn't even see the storage card (in the Library). Updating the library, it finds the tracks but seems to hang while adding them. Meanwhile, the free storage on the card goes down... and down... and down until there's none left. MC then says "can't add the tracks" and gives up.
Anyone else having this trouble, or am I incredibly unlucky?!
Ferg.
I have the same issue on my TyTN...
really frustrating but I found a workaround: browse the storage and delete the hidden folder MSMETADATA, then try to update media player library.
You won't find such folder using the file explorer provided with WM5: you must use an enhanced file explorer such as Resco one in order to view hidden and system files.
I have the same problem but I will try deleting that files to see if it helps.
That seems to work Nic, nice one.
I'm sure I remember doing this before with no success, but my memory is obviously playing tricks.
ferg.
I also have the same problem. It is very annoying...
However, if you go to the Library screen, then Menu > Open File and navigate to storage card > playlists, you can open any of your playlists...
Not ideal but it works.
I removed that file and it works fine now, jusy hope is stays the same for a few days.
Yeah, I've had the same problem too and I've tried all the various things suggested with limited success. The only surefire solution I've encountered is to copy all my important folders from the storage card to my desktop - minus any of the media files/folders and the msmeta data files, using resco, reformat the storage card, replace all the files from the desktop, resync and then synchronise he music through wm player again.
What a pain!

How to limit the music player to look in /sdram/mp3 directory

I have a bunch of audio books I keep in /sdram/abooks and use MortPlayer which can be configured to use any particular directory.
Problem is the music player now lists my audio books. I want the music player to just list my music files (i.e. what I put in /sdram/mp3). I can't seem to find any way to do that?
Is there an alternative app that will do that? (will have to be in the free section of Market as the powers that be prevent us non-americans from searching through paid apps, go figure).

extract the attached file on your pc, then copy the .nomedia file inside the folder to those folders that you don't wish to have them show in either Photo or Music Player...
Hope this helps,
Kiay
Thanks for the suggestion. Creating an empty .nomedia file in a directory seems to stop the media player from looking into this directory for media files. It isn't the best way to do it though, imagine you have to go through this process every time you install software that creates a directory on the sdram card. I can't understand the developers of the media player didn't at least make it an option to limit the search for media to certain directories.
I added the .nomedia file into the desired directories but the unwanted songs are still visible in the native HTC music player.
Is there a way to refresh the track list somehow?
same here, probably we've to restart the phone.
I solved his by connecting the Desire to PC via mass storage and disconnecting again. The SD card got "refreshed" this way
MortPlayer Music (free on Astroid Marked) lets you define a directory for music files.

Where do I put music & video files?

Sorry but a really noob question ..........
Where do I put music and video's so that the default app's find them?
I thought the SD card was 'external_SD' so that's where I put the music folders. But then, when I try to navigate to that on the phone, there's nothing in there. And also, when I open the music app' it doesn't show anything that I've added!!
So can you tell me where you put audio and video files please.
Sorry, I really show know this but it's not something I've done on any of my phones before!
Thanks in advance for you help.
SDCard : Internal Storage ,the 16Gb build in
External SD : The micro SD (T-Flash) you insert into phone
And inside Windows Explorer ,it should be two drives ,say ,Drive E and Drive F ,one is internal ,one is external
Hope this help
I think memory your looking at is the built in memory. I put some video files in the folder marked media and it found them ok. If you want to find the external memory you need to go to settings, wireless and network then usb utilities to connect tovpc. Thenn i just put all my music on there. Again it found them ok.

Right, I've done the music files. I've dumped them in the 'Music' folder in the above screenshot and it appears to have found them. The only annoying thing is that it's sorted each song alphabetically and not by track number!
Now I just need to work out where to put videos.
I also still can't see, from my screenshot of the folder structure above, where my SD card is. If it is that 'external_SD' then why aren't files showing when I explore it on the phone?
And does the Note not play .mov files? I've transferred some across but when trying to open them it states, "No applications can perform this action".

Saving Google Play Music to external SD?

Is there a way to save my google play music that is stored on my device to an external SD card without having root? For the life of me i can not find the music files in any file manager....I see people have posted paths to the music but my folder is always empty....so basically can I save my google play music to an external sd card without root?
Just download your music collection and move it to an SD card if that's what you want to do.

Go to MyFiles app and go to device storage, long press on music folder and choose move, now move it to sd memory card
Also once done hit menu and go to settings, there you will choose to redirect music to your extsdcard so from now on every song you add will go to your extsd

The Music folder on MyFiles app maps to /storage/emulated/0/music
Google music however stores the files at root/data/data/com.google.android.music/files/music/
So I'm not sure that moving that folder would do the trick
@op - I don't think you can do that without root

That's where I get mine too. But I have to use Root Explorer.
It would be neat to see a non root method to access those files from the original directory source.
And speaking of directory source, I hate Sony Unlimited app. I can't seem to find where my 320 aac songs are. Blah.

The WALKMAN app and music syncing

Hey xda!
After days of trying to get a decent solution out of the Sony support guys, I gave up and turned to the only place I know I'll probably find my anwser!
So here's the scenario: I've recently purchased a Z2 (yesterday) and immediately started syncing my music up with the provided application which is Media Go. The unfortunate thing is, that my music refuses to show up in the WALKMAN app. I've looked up some probable solutions on the web such as clearing the data and cache of the WALKMAN app, restarting the phone several times, doing a factory reset, but I ran into a dead end every time. I've also heard that the WALKMAN app cannot recognize music which are in the external storage, but that's not the case here since I dont have an SD card inserted at the moment. I've also read that the app cannot recognize music without proper ID3 tags, but I don't think thats the case here since every music player, even Media Go, can recognize every single mp3 I have on my PC.
Anyone else Xperienced (pun intended) this problem and found a solution?
Thanks in advance!

First thing: The Z2 does recognizes Music in the external storage. From Kitkat and beyond, that's almost the exclusive use for it, without root.
Second: does other players recognizes songs? Download one of the most used, are your choice, and see if they find it.
Third: Seems obvious, but everyone forgers, sometimes, the most obvious stuff. Use a file manager, on the phone (there should be one called File Commander built in), and check the Music folder to see if your media files are there.
Forth: Use the file manager in Windows, and transfer a few music files to the Music folder. Reboot the phone, wait a few minutes (just to make sure), and check if the music is now on Walkman...

The good thing about android is that you can just copy and paste the files onto your phone storage without using a syncing app.
Have you tried copying one of the music files onto your storage straight away into a new folder you create? (the name of the folder doesn't matter at all)
In addition, check the folder with your music files. (The one music go created) Chances are...there is a file in it called '.nomedia'. It's usually a hidden file, so make sure you select 'show hidden files' when you use a file management app. (I recommend Es file Explorer. You can find it on google play store, but others are fine too as long as you get to see hidden files) The file is there to stop media files in the folder from being recognised.
P.S the phone does recognise media files on external storage. That's the whole point of having one really.

Hey! Thanks for the extremely fast response!
First, the music is located in the internal storage. It's in the root/Music folder. The structure looks like /Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS
Tried what you suggested and strangely , none of the downloaded music players recognize any kind of music on my phone!
Also tried manually copying files (by following the "/Music/ARTIST/ALBUM/SONGS" and by simply copying individual files into the /Music/ folder) but still refuses to recognize my music.
Have you tried creating a NEW folder and put some music files into it?

The other guy pointed some important information. Kudos to him
Try using a more powerful file explorer (the recommended ES File Explorer is a good one. You can try Solid Explorer too, if you like it better) and do a search on the whole storage (remember to activate the Show Hidden files/folders) for .nomedia files.
PS: That isn't the root of the storage, in theory. From a user standpoint, it is, but technically there are a few other folders before you reach the actual root.
Again, don't forget to thank the other guy. I kinda just repeated what he said, but in another way. From the time O am writing this, I haven't saw a reply from you to him...

Tried creating a folder of my own and putting some music files into it, but nothing sadly, I've checked for a .nomedia file in the /Music/ folder but i dont see anything in there. However, there is a .nomedia file in the root of the internal memory. Maybe that's the root of my problem?

Most likely yes. Delete it and it should work. I wonder why that file was there in the first place...

Thanks for the fast responses. The solution was indeed to delete that dreaded .nomedia file there... I too wonder why did Sony put there in the first place! Thanks again for your help!

Wooah wait there...Z2 has always been reading the music from SD card how can you say that it doesnot...?
I dont think the native music player has any problem reading it from the SD card...even though KK 4.4 has restrictions
Also throw the music file anywhere in the phone either internal or external inside any folder it recognises automatically unless the database is corrupt...

My Z2 sees all the music, I have the MUSIC folder created on my SD Card.
The only explorer which can do it is File Commander.
Jumping in on this thread....
I use to play my music unlimited through the Walkman, but all of a sudden it seems to have stopped doing so when I try to log back in it doesn't allow me to do so, I click on music unlimited within the Walkman it loads up the screen to login but neither the "login" button or "create account" button will do anything if I click on them they make the tap sound which is registering that they are being clicked but nothing else, the other two links on the page will open ( Learn more and Terms and conditions )
I've tried removing both apps, clearing all the data and reloading everything back on but it's still the same, anyone got any ideas.
Walkman plays my 70gb library on my sdcard1 just fine...
I use Google play music and Walkman does not see my music.

Oh yeah, that's cause Google play music downloads your music to the device and stores it in some cryptic way. I forgot about that.
But, if you put your music on your phone yourself via pc, EVERY music player will be able to see it.

Google music sucks. It will only let you download the music and it's stored in some secret way. I use amazon mp3 at least you can actually put the files on your added card. Shame on Google.
