Hello all,
Just a quick rooting question. Is there any reason to unlock the bootloader when rooting? According to some stickies, we can root without unlocking and I was able to root my friend's Captivate without unlocking anything. I am assuming we're unlocking the bootloader since it makes the rooting process easier as a hack isn't required? Thanks!

The TL;DR of that article is that,
Every phone has a bootloader. The Nexus series (and now Sony Ericcson after filing out a form on their website) has a unlockable bootloader without the usage of any exploits. Phones such as the Galaxy S series (Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, etc) -- mainly Samsung phones have weak bootloader protection.
HOWEVER, all of the other phones' bootloaders are unlocked due to a exploit. So yes, your friend did unlock the bootloader without actually knowing it.
The only phones that are unable to unlock the bootloader are Motorola phones because of the bootloader being signed.
But if you really want to know about bootloaders, read that article.
@dave: there is no such thing as a custom radio. The radio itself is not open sourced. But it allows you to flash a older version of the radio since results of radios vary between user. Some people may experience better connection with KB3 than KD1 and etc.

Correct. Most other phones require an exploit to root, the Nexus S does not - if you unlock the bootloader. Conversely, you might still be able to root the Nexus using an exploit, even if you want to keep the bootloader locked.

It's kind of a PITA to flash an updated Clockworkmod Recovery. That's all I've found out.

^ but to be honest, not to many things get changed within the recovery. Sure the modified Clockwork recovery gets updated. But the original clockwork from ROM Manager doesn't.. it'll work, but I don't see a reason on keeping the bootloader locked. No security is ever compromised.

Funny, I actually paraphrased the OP. He was on the right track anyway, just needed some confirmation, not a whole paper Also there's a lot of stuff in there I don't really agree with all that much.

Flash (and probably boot) stuff via fastboot.
My stock unrooted wifi galaxy tab 10.1 just received an update OTA that seems to have done nothing except LOCK my unlocked bootloader. It was only 11.2mb and during the update process my tab went into download mode, then to a command line looking interface with commands related to encrypting bootloader. I no longer have the unlocked symbol upon boot up. Look out for update version UEKG4!
EDIT: Google videos app has been loaded as well, but not in the market, just the app.
Very odd. What region are you in? I just did an update check and there was no update available.
I am in the US. I cant find anything else that it may have updated. No extra apps, features, or apparent bug fixes. Just locked bootloader.

Yes, thank you for the warning. As a heads up to anyone that has even an inkling of interest in rooting your tablet. DO NOT TAKE OTA's until they have been looked through by the devs. Just look at the evo 4g forums on here

If it is unlocked, there is a picture of a Lock during bootup and it shows as open.
If it is locked, then there is no picture at all.
(at least this is how my 2 different tabs showed up)

After reading your post I went to settings /updates and there it was just like you said 11.2mb update, I'm afraid to update since mine is unlocked a well also it says to remove any pulses short cuts from the main page so Google video could get installed. Update or no to update?

I updated it now I'm locked and no new app was installed.
So why does it matter if you get a locked bootloader again? I because as far as i know... it doesn't!

Locked bootloaders will limit what can be flashed to the Tablet, we can get custom roms that are based off samsung sources.
Locked bootloaders will not be able to flash TABUNTU unless poitee can find a way around it...
im not trying to be rude or anything guys. But you should really look into what a locked and unlocked bootloader really is. If you haven't noticed, we can flash cmw. That means we can flash roms, kernels, and root. There is no reason to be worried at all. It makes no difference to have a locked or unlocked bootloader unless you wanna flash something that needs a different bootloader. Which there isn't much right now except for tabuntu.
I'm in NJ and showing no update available.
Received the update. CWM and root were retained.

Can we take it to mean now SE will allow phones with unlocked bootloaders to update via OTA or SEUS! Good News i think.
I can only see unlocked phones, not unlocked boot loaders...

Kiz1983 Thx for pointing it out guess i was carried away of having phones with Unlock BL able to update. You mean locked Phones= Sim locked phones or wat?
If yes you mean sim locked phones dont update via OTA or SEUS. I never had Sim Locked phones so i dont know

Has anyone unlocked the bootloader on their Razr M retail version yet? It's been mentioned on some other forums that you can get the unlock code from Motorola website. This should then allow a recovery to be installed onto the phone.
So has anyone attempted it yet?

No, he's an Aussie , our RAzr Ms are unlockable.
My Australian Telstra branded Razr M spat out an unlock code via the motorola unlock website just like the dev edition phones do. It says right on that website if your phone is ineligible you will receive an error. And I got the code, not the error.
Ausdroid also says explicitly they have confirmation Aussie Razr M is unlockable via moto website.
PJcons, I notice the same discussion on whirlpool, seriously if you don't believe this answer then go and try it yourself, no point asking repeatedly esp as you are confusing people here who have the US CDMA verizon version not the aussie GSM/LTE1800 Telstra version. However re: actually unlocking, I can't confirm the last step i.e. actually doing it. The only reason I haven't actually gone ahead is because there is actually no point at this stage as we don't have access to any remotely mature custom ROMs, and the only CWM floating around is not confirmed working on our variant (though as long as it doesn't touch the radio, theoretically it should). But I'm reluctant to do anything without having a stock Telstra fastboot image as a last resort roll-back option, years and years of flashing droids has taught me that if nothing else. Theoretically though I do not see how it could possibly fail if you have the token.

But what are the changes that causes the lock down.
Is it a Physical chip that has been changed or is it a 128Bit encryption that stops ppl from Unlocking the Verizon version ?
Pretty sure it's encryption... I remember seeing an article on how it was done, but no idea where...

I think I read somewhere that Motorola uses 256bit encryption, but I could have dreamed that for all I know.
Either way, it's going to be tough to crack.
question on bootloader
I restored my firmware using Matt's Utility 1.20 back to 4.1.2 ( previously rooted, bl unlocked, running a rom) , however I cant unlock the bootloader anymore (the M logo shows up even after reboot) even after using the Motopocolypse from drjbliss. Is there anyway to fix this?

You're still unlocked. Try going into bootloader mode - you should still be status 3 unlocked

Cwm probably got uninstalled when you flashed stock. Just reflash it and it should work

I reflashed CWM but it didnt do anything? When I install a rom it says that it installed fine but when i boot it up, it just boots with the moto logo and boots into stock

I there are telstra xmls & xt905 twrp backups in the dev forum
Have installed the 4.2 update via recovery and locked the bootloader. Will I now get future OTA updates from google?

The bootloader being locked or unlocked makes no difference. We typically see people OTA update fails from people who have modified system apps/files or installed a different kernel.

Yeah, but is the method for unlocking it on 4.2 different from the method on 4.1.1?
Sorry Im asking all these questions, rooting is a bit different from jailbreaking lol

Haha, no. The method is still the same. And I suspect it will be the same for a while to come.
Oh and welcome to the Android world
The bootloader is unrelated to the version of Android you are running.
It is a " boot loader" that runs before the operating system is loaded.
Unlock it once, when you first get the device - and it should stay unlocked forever.
Nothing to do with root either - except the bootloader has to be unlocked to root the device.
Root and unroot the device as you like - just never mess with the bootloader after you unlock it.
Unlocking purges all your files...
