Gingerbread is basically the same as froyo. The only real improvement is making the text selecting more intuitive. I want the api from honeycomb, for dual pane applications and the new 3d interface.
So that means either honeycomb or 2.4. For me 2.4 is probably better, since I will meanly be using the tab as a phone with a tablet profile.
So Sammy, please give us 2.4 and not just 2.3.

Don't know if I want a honeycomb port. What I want is a performance improvement and Gingerbread is such an improvement. The JIT compiler is optimized again (like it was the case with froyo) and there is a concurrent garbage collector for better memory management.
If honeycomb is even faster (for a non dual core device) yes than I want honeycomb. And as for the beta build, I rather wait for a beta of the 2.4 Frankenstein build LoL
Furthermore, if Samsung is committing itself to an upgrade, this means the tab won't become obsolete when other new 7" tablets hit the market, like for example the Flyer. It means that they have plans to stay on top of this segment, which is great. Maybe they will also improve the built in Samsung software, like for example the browser and the mail app. So no buzz, but rather the real thing for me

I think it's relatively easy to map the galaxy Tabs hardware buttons to the software functionality as soon as the source goes AOSP
Then we can get rid of the software buttons too... boom! perfect!
I hope the new launcher doesn't eat up too much performance

I've read that the galaxy tab and galaxy line of phones have similar hardware... makes me think that new versions of android that are released for the phones could potentially work on our tabs.
not sure though, and im not a dev.. but i'd love some fresh official sgt firmware releases before samsung stops supporting the tab

Assuming this is confirmed, Honeycomb 3.2 will bring updated Widgets, bugfixes, updated movie studio, music apps and improved hardware acceleration (as well as 7in and Support for other cpus). This will also be the last honeycomb release before Ice cream.
Do you think the transformer will get it anytime soon?
They did pretty well with rolling out 3.1, even better than Motorola.
I believe that HC 3.2 was for the 7 inchers only.....like my Galaxy Tab.

3.2 will now support 7inches. But it will also roll out to exising 10in tabs for bug fixes, new widgets and etc.
I have no doubt that Asus will roll this out, and as soon as anyone else. They've made it perfectly clear that they intend on supporting this device.
I'm hoping that they also roll out some fixes along with the update. I'd like to see them resolve or reduce the dock drain issue, and add in the battery usage info so we can see what's sucking down power. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with my TF.

This is my best bit. Hopefully this also translates to better video decoding and playback especially on high-profile HD videos. Let's keep our fingers crossed for this.
Since ice cream is supposed to be out during the holidays, it appears asus could be in a tight fix to squeeze-in hc 3.2 in between. Hope i could be wrong, updates are always welcome.
I dont care for 3.2. What I want is Asus to fix some of the issues we are currently having example browser lag, typing lag, SOD, battery draining on the keyboard, speakers balance, etc,etc,etc... I dont want new features just fix the issues we are having right now.

Well, there will be bugfixes and Asus UK have just posted on Facebook asking feedback on the 3.1 update and what to improve.

They did the right thing by releasing 3.0.1 kernel source at release time, but WTF is taking so long to release 3.1 kernel source. I sure hope 3.2 fixes some of the video playback issues and that Asus get's back on track and releases 3.2 kernel source at the time the update is available.

Important one is - Will it get ICS?
I really do not care about having HC 3.2 on my tab for 3 or 5 weeks - but I want ICS which (I hope) well address all issues of A 2.2/2.3 and 3.x and finally will be true contender to iOS.

I tell you what I want before 3.2 or ICS - a hell of a lot more tablet optimised apps!
The operating system is for the most part just a means to run applications, and currently the vast, vast majority of apps are for Android 2.x.
Having ICS is mostly a waste of time if the apps aren't there.
Cart before the horse here people!

True, but ICS should get the app devs to make their apps better scalable and/or tablet optimized since it is supposed to run on both kinds of devices.

If they dont support theyr device this will show that Asus is not a company to go for at the next crossroad as they just pump out units and dont follow up on them like other tablets get (atleast iPad) and will therfore loose marketshares fast, and people will be reserved about going for a Asus produck again in the future.
With a good support and follow-uå they will gain a good reputation on a device wich is already hard to get due to larger demand (atelast here) than they can get out.

As for apps, everything that is running in Honeycomb (including older apps not honeycomb specific) will run under ICS. Google won't abandon the entire android market just to start over again when ICS gets here. ICS is really just a formal statement for how android is NOW. Most apps made for phone sized devices scale and run on tablets. The only people who don't seem to grasp that concept are iPad owners, although it is undertandable since iPhone apps don't scale to fit the iPad's screen well.

Technobuffalo has an article quoting Mr. Schmidt of Google saying ICS will be deployed around Oct/Nov. How long till the Tab sees it? Is there even a point if it is mostly going to be based off of honeycomb anyways?

If it doesn't hit the market in any form until November, I think very few existing products will see ICS this year.
Some might, if only so their manufacturers can behave like twelve-year-olds on the internet and jump up and down shouting 'First!' but I think it will come in reasonable time.

I think you're maybe looking at it the wrong way.
It doesn't matter what it's based on, all that matters is that it's the next step forward to an all-round better OS for both phones and tablets.
From what I understand (which is little) the biggest difference we Tablet owners will see will be the availability of more apps (phone apps) scaled up. Along with facial recognition, ability to save web pages for offline viewing, UI changes and scalable widgets.
What great times for Android. One operating system for all and with Amazon offering 50 bucks to developers till November and changes to their appstore coming before their tablet this winter it seems like it is just nonstop good news for Android users.

Amazon is going to be one hell of a unique fork, OS wise. It should run most regular Android applications, but forget about customizing the UI, and forget about things like application sideloading, Google Music Beta, Google Books, Nook, (or ePubs in general). It'll be locked down tight (bet it won't even have SD card support) and it'll be missing (to some) key features, like cameras and GPS.
Most worrisome of all, if it's a big success and they sell all 5 million they plan on producing this year, it'll FURTHER fragment the Android user base, as developers will need to make stuff for 1.6-2.3 phones/tablets, 3.x tablets, 4.x phones and tablets, and and Amazon's fork of 2.2.
Good news is, if the sales are strong, it'll pull more developers over to the world of Dalvik, and some of that should trickle down to "regular" phones and tablets.

I hadn't seen any details about Amazon's take on Android but you're posting about it here and someone else is posting about it here.
One way or another the Galaxy Tab will have ICS within a month of AOSP release. Maybe not a official Samsung release though!

A Samsung official update? Nooo more like June We may have a CM8 build by Feb, but this is assuming that Google doesn't sit on its hands over the AOSP release. It takes a while for the source to drop
I'm pretty sure when Google releases the source to ICS one of the talented devs on this forum will port an AOSP over to the Galaxy Tab, I don't see why they wouldn't.

i dont want to look like i dont have any faith in our devs but how can you believe they will port the aosp ICS to tab 10.1 when its on even though we dont have any kernel for even p7500 ?
i switched to tab10.1 from xoom for 2 reasons; 1, the screen was better and 2, i believed it would be more populer so it would have more devs than the xoom..
screen is perfect but the number 2 let me down..

There's no guarantee that ICS will offer any real improvement on the Tab, aside from maybe scaling older phone apps better (though 3.2 should fix that).

I doubt there will be any hardware limitations, atleast I'm not aware of any. I'm quite sure there will be some cheap Tegra2 devices with Icecream Sandwich soon after it's released.

Acer sucks, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's likely that we'll need a custom ROM for A500.
google released a statement saying there were no new hardware limitations, so we should be compatible.
Well ics is going to open source all the other good tablets are tegra 2 so i couldn't imagine something getting cooked up a week or so after source drops

Yup. Just a little behind schedule - and without great communication.
This is typical Acer. Lucky part is - as Android users we can choose to not rely on the hardware devs and run custom roms.
ICS should definitly be able to be placed on the A500. All Android tablets now pretty much have the same hardware, the Tegra 2 chipset. If no ICS for the A500, I would assume no ICS for any Tegra 2 device. Which I believe 100% will not be the case.
And hopefully when ICS releases, they will release the source code so we can have AOSP ROMS. Then it wont matter whether Acer releases an official ROM because devs can build from AOSP and throw in the necessary code for the specific hardware of the A500.

I have been reading this user group comments for weeks now to gain as much info about the A500 as possible and after reading comments both good and bad, I decided to go out and buy.
I really love this device. It is better than I anticipated. It came with 3.01, however Acer upgraded the firmware over the weekend first to 3.1 and then to 3.2, so I am very impressed, (after having Samsung devices for 18 months and receiving no updates at all, still on 2.2).
I am very glad this U.G. exists as many of my questions have already come to the fore, thanks for that. The only problem is that my wife has threatened to throw the device out the window if I dont stop fiddling with the A500 and show her some attention as well.
There has been talk about Ice Cream Sandwich running on the A500, does anyone know what is different about android 4.0 compared to 3.2?

My girlfriend makes the same threats Just Google 'Ice Cream Sandwich features' for some more info. They haven't released a whole lot of info yet, but in a nutshell it will be a a uniform operating system that will run on phones and tablets instead of 2 different OS. Some cool new features have been discussed, but I have a feeling there's a lot we won't find out about until it gets released (October/November last I heard).
It is officialy stated that tegra 2 devices wil be given ICS update.

Yea, I got myself an A100 and gave her my A500(bought her a logitech bluetooth keyboard to go with it). So I get the smaller lighter "nimbler" device. She got the bigger thicker device so she gets a stronger grip.
All kidding aside, tablets do make excellent platforms for watching porn with your partner. It even has dual cameras in case you want to make your own too.

I was taking their kidding and making a real comment that the 7" form factor tablet is a good blend for an aid to lovemaking, yes. While I joked with them, I meant my statement to have no innuendo and intended it to be just my obesrvation.

I consider everything rumor and speculation until it actually happens, even when it comes from companies themselves. But to date, we've been told that ICS is a merging of the phone and tablet OS. That in and of itself should allow us the luxury of surmising that this OS should work on all if not most devices currently running Gingerbread and Honeycomb at the very least.
It will be of course up to manufacturers to take the time to port it to their past devices, something not very many companies are ever willing to do since it doesn't really add any physical value (for them) to the product but I would think the current tablet providers would essentially get the update to their products as quickly as they can considering 1. they don't have a multitude of variants on the market and 2. they still have lots on store shelves etc. so it would indeed add physical value to their product - unlike for example, expecting HTC to update their Mytouch 4G or Samsung to update their Galaxy I US carrier line which have been on the market for almost a year.
Don't believe any rumors you hear and remember to take everything right now as speculation and with a grain of salt. Acer could very well today say they will update and a month or 2 after it's out tell us it won't/can't be done. Such is the way of tech.
I think it will come to the A500. Maybe not as quickly as it does to the Tab 10.1 or Transformer, but not too long afterwards. Acer has proven themselves to at the very least be consistent with their updates if albeit slow (for some), and so I'll take my positives where I can. I'm fine with slow and steady.

I checked out one of these today and I think it will be perfect for me until the Asus memo 370 comes along... but I have a galaxy nexus and after using ics I really don't want to go back to hc.
Has anyone read or have samsung announced if/when it will be receiving ics?

How long is a piece of string? Q2 Samsung reckon.
I'm running ICS on my SGS2 and have honeycomb on the 7.7 and I guess its preference really I can put up with HC until a dev gets around to ICS for us.
do you notice much of a difference between the 2? Still tossing up whether to pull the trigger now or wait (I have the original galaxy tab atm)...

Why would you want a Memo as a replacement for a Tab 7.7? That's a serious downgrade in my book.

downgrade in term of screen maybe, but in term of processing power and gpu, I think tegra 3 still in the leading hand
I'd wait for memo 370t also, but for 250 , I dont think it can do voice call, which would be a big no for me
tab 7.7 launching schedule is Feb 11th so gonna wait till more active development in tab 7.7 while seeing on MWC about ASUS

ICS update.
Love Samsung mobiles but so far their history of devices is abysmal.
Asus Transformer Prime (Tegra3), Previous Transformer (Tegra 2), Motorola Zoom (Tegra2) is already receiving ICS updates but Samsung Tab 10.1 and Tab 8.9 also based on Tegra 2 still no word.
On Exynos some leaks are still rolling out for SGS2. So Note still needs to follow and only then will they look at other tabs. Ridiculous.
On top of that I flashed ICS leak on my SGS and TW dominates ICS so much that it might as well be gingerbread. Basically all thats left of ICS UI is the settings.
SAD SAD SAD.
Best thing we can hope for is a stable Cyanogen 9 rom for tab 7.7
CM9 will be boss on this tab, I'm running the KANG on my Gtab 10.1
Yeah.. I am moving forward not even thinking about the "ICS" update from Samsung. CM9 or a vanilla build of ICS, Id like to get as close to stock Android as possible on this bad boy. It just seems that TouchWiz is a "bottle neck" as the system seems laggy when using the UI. My fingers are crossed. Hell I may even have some funds for donation.

Lag is virtually non-existent on this device honestly. Just replace TouchWiz launcher with ADW EX, and you'll be flying.
Basically, yeah, it's not ICS yet, but honestly, it's not like what we have now is a bad experience by any stretch. It's plenty good, hell it's fantastic, for now, until Samsung or the dev community gets a working ICS build for us.

Totally agree, although I would also suggest Go Launcher EX. I tried both this weekend and I find Go Launcher EX even more smooth than ADW EX, but both excellent.
Someone posted on here about them playing with the leaked alpha/beta ICS update for the SGSII and they said all that was left of rhe ICS gui was the settings window and that TouchWiz dominated the ROM. That is very disappointing to me, but i mean what did i expect afterall. Ive never bought any other devices but Google Flag Ship devices that run stock android so i guess thats my point of reference.. For me android is about choice.. letting the user CHOOSE what they want, Samsung should build in a toggle to turn off TouchWiz completely if we the user chooses to. I just feel it adds another layer that just steals CPU cycles and doesnt really add any benefit.

Would love to use ADW EX but I cant get rid of black bar on top. The standard transparent bar thats part of stock TW turns into a grey bar and no setting I change can get it transparent again. If you could help me out here I might just run ADW...

That was me that posted it and yes I agree.
Supercurio also has a support forum asking for a "AOSP Launcher for Samsung ICS" Go and add support. Hopefully he can somehow convince them to include stock UI.
Who knows... maybe by the time we'll have ICS we'll be able install some win8 on this device

It supposedly will have ARM support so there might be a possibility of setting up Android tablets to boot to it, or at least maybe a lite version of it. Dunno if that's a good thing, but having more options generally is preferable.

well.. as a windows user most of my apps (including the ones i develop) are windows platform based... so having a tablet that can run these can be nice... most likely I will switch to a windows supporting tablet when win8 be officially released...

There's a dev preview of Windows 8 out now. It won't work on ARM devices (nor will it install as a VM on Fusion for Mac), but it gives a good sense of the feature set and UX. It's basically Windows 7 with an embedded tablet mode.
