[Q] GPS location locking not working? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I do not recall exactly which rom I installed, but i think it was called Nexus HD2 or something.
Very stable and solid ROM, but I use GPS quite a bit for my work, but it could never lock on my positon for turn-by-turn nav. Is something wrong with my phone? It was sitting right under the windshield the entire time, and no satellite lock. The blue circle would get small, but it never pinpointed my position.

Have you checked the gps.conf file on your ROM to be sure that it is configured for your region?

You need to use some type of file explorer. I use ES File Explorer found on the Market. Go to Systems/Etc/gps.conf on your phone and NOT the SD card and there you will see what region the file was configured for. If it is set up for the wrong region for you, then go to Instantaneous GPS Fixation thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630 and download the correct zip for your region and flash it via CWR.

GPS Libraries v1.3 for HD2 Gingerbread , A definite requirement fo users with android on HD2

Flashed two CWM zips, testing it later today at work. It would literally try getting a lock for 10 minutes without succeeding. Hopefully this now cuts it down to under a minute (maybe I'm too hopeful).

GPS problems numerous. Sticky?

I propose that one of these GPS problem threads be made sticky since we cannot simply search "GPS" here and the GPS problems seem to be accumulating.
With that said, I would have to say that my GPS performance is pretty terrible. At first, it felt like doing the QuickGPS thing and/or deleting the xtra.bin file helped. For the most part, though, getting a lock has proven quite sporadic. What should the expectation here be? Should I expect the GPS to work reliably indoors? What about if I am near a window? Why would it work in some buildings near a window and not in others?
My personal opinion is that the GPS should work within 15-20 feet of a window. Using Chartcross GPS Test, even when the GPS is locked, I am getting mostly yellow bars. I am not exactly sure what a good reading looks like on Chartcross, but there appears to be a 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% bar. Maybe the 25% bar is 100%? In any event, I rarely have a satellite that is getting above what I suspect to be 30%.
Is there a thread somewhere that details what the various fields mean and/or should read in Chartcross or a similar utility? I am coming up on my 30 days to return the phone, so if someone thinks that my device may be defective please speak up!
Thanks as always XDA-ers!
GPS signals are not strong, you have to be near a window (e.g. less than 50cm) or outside to get it to work properly. Inside I get 8 sats with too little to lock, outside I can get up to 11 locked. I use modified GPS settings to improve the lock. I've created a CAB for you.

No you cant use it inside, but this has nothing to do with windows. Think of it this way:
To use the GPS, you need a line of sight to the sky, small barriers it will work through (like car roofs). So even a "line of sight" to a window, wont help you because of the thikness of the house roof. To be able to use GPS inside, you need something else, like a big antenna
Anyways, the GPS is for outside/car use only.

That is partially true. The signal can "reflect" off surfaces as well, though - as with light - weaker. And it does have to do with windows simply because a window has a lot (lot!) less density than say, a brick wall. Less density means easier path for the signal. Being near a window does indeed increase the chance of signal lock.

I have a lock when I am inside all the time, usually about 5 satellites or so... out side that jumps considerably, in fact I was very impressed with the speed and sensitivity when compared to my Kaiser/TyTN II/MDA Vario III and I havent used quick gps yet... of course now I said that its going to be sods luck and it will [email protected] out on me...

Well, it depends on several factors. If your home is made of wood instead of brick, that'll make a difference. If you live higher above sea level, it might make a difference. If you live on the countryside, that will definitely make a difference. I happen to live below sea level in a brick house in the middle of an average sized city. My reception won't be something to write home about

I've only had signal ONCE so far with my X1
It was at my living room window.
After that, no signal, ever. Not even out doors.
Im in NYC, plenty of buildings, but cmon somethings gotta be wrong. I even tried a hard reset to get it to work again. Nope... Bastard GPS ):

you wont get any signal (or good accurate location) if you are in a big city.... your best bet is using google map w/ agps and let the cell tower locate where you are at
another thing I want to point out.... I tried using the gps on x1 when I was on the plane... while it was always able to lock on to a couple sats... it wasnt able to locate where I was at .... and the worst part is after I get back on the ground... the gps stop working and I had to hard reset my phone .... I tested it twice and both seems to be the case... so if you dont want to hard reset your phone.... I suggest you not to try it next time when you are on the plane
You guys must have really big houses to need GPS to work indoors

I really appreciate the quick reply and cab file. I will load it shortly. Is my understanding correct that A-GPS is turned off by default? If so, does this cab enable it? What improvement did you see with your cab file? Lastly, do you use Chartcross GPS test? I'm trying to figure out what the different fields/values mean in it.
Thanks!
Careful with changing the A-GPS to on by default. You can do this through Schapman's advanced configuration tool too, but I've had nothing but bad luck with it.
I use iGO8 and after I turned A-GPS on, the gps signal would drop every few seconds and would have a hard time finding satellites. Switching everything back to factory "defaults" and just using quickgps updates, I've had zero issues. Apart from the initial sat discovery, it's always fast to start and fast to pick back up (maybe 2-3 seconds) again.

GPS is only able to keep a lock under a certain speed. Airplanes are fast, so you will lose the lock. Once on the ground you can get a lock again by running QuickGPS. As your location has changed tremendously (depends on how far you fly ofc), the sattelites aren't where your phone thinks they are.

You're welcome. My CAB does not enable aGPS, as it sometimes causes problems like quoted below. It changes some registry settings that basically tell your phone to keep looking for a better lock, for a longer period of time.

Do not that your individual experience with aGPS doesn't generalize to everyone. I've personally tried aGPS here. It made 0 difference (as far as I could tell), so turned it off again.
If you wish to try aGPS, feel free to do so, as it can be disabled as easily as it can be enabled, a hard-reset should not be neccesary.

GPS Lock For HD2 Android (Quick GPS Solution)

Very slow GPS locking in Hd2 Android? Some recommended changing gps.conf file but none work for me. However, I found out that if I update the Quick GPS in winmo before I boot into Android, the GPS locking in Android system is as FAST as winmo < 15 seconds.

me too. since i only use android now, i never update quickgps, but i saw this post and tried it, and it picked me up in like 5 seconds.
Update your gps.conf file in /system/etc if you have not already. It makes locking a very quick thing, even inside your house.
I found that mine was set to try to lock on EU satellites (and I'm in the US). It would take 4-5 minutes to lock. Now, I lock in <15 seconds, most of the time. No other tool/app needed.
There are a few tutorials on how to edit your gps.conf files out there in this forum already.

No didn't work for me at all. Made no difference. However, using quickGPS in Winmo before booting Android worked a treat! Android really needs quickGPS
So before reading this, I had no idea that there was a solution... I figured the 5mins to lock on was just because the builds are still not quite 100%. I've just updated my gps.conf and QuickGPS, and I now get a lock in less than 5 seconds... inside!
Thanks so much!
sorry help would be appreciated. i changed the settings in my gps.conf file. i then reset my phone tried gps and took just as long as it usually does ~5 min. I then checked gps.conf file again and it was empty. so i then decided to check a diff build that i have on my phone to copy it over. i deleted the gps file in the desire hd build that ive been using and i tried to copy over the other one. it told me that space is full and i cant copy it over IO error. I then noticed that the old gps file is still there but it wont open. any ideas? thanks in advance
One thing I noticed is GPS takes forever (or never) upon FIRST loading of a GPS program, usually Google Nav. Once I close out, then start the app back up, I then get an almost instant GPS lock.
How is Quick GPS a solution when that is a WM program so you must reboot to run it before launching Android ?

that's exactly what I do too. I'm going to try to update gps.conf just to see if that would do it.
one problem i've always had with android is my GPS takes FOREVER to find a satellite signal, most times it never does. but here's how i've solved that problem and now i get a gps signal within 30 seconds or less
step 1 - while in WM, use Quick GPS to download the satellites
step 2 - boot android up once the satellites have downloaded
step 3 - download GPS Test from the android market (it's free)
step 4 - start GPS Test and let it find the satellites (it normally finds 5-9 satellites)
step 5 - once it has found the satellites i go into google maps, type in the address of where i wanna go and select get driving directions/navigate
step 6 - the google navigation starts up and picks up a satellite within seconds and i'm on my way

YES!! I tried it .... when I boot into Android ... it only takes less than 2 seconds to get a GPS lock!!
Do we have to boot into WM ... do QuickGPS then boot into Android everytime we need to run GPS on Android?

GPS UK

right I have to know if its only me but even after editing the gps config file it still only works every now and then and even that requires gps status and tools? At the moment using WP7 and gps is lightning fast (fix etc) but switching back to android as android is most definatly superior in most cases at the moment. Especially the camera quality is bad and battery life is ok but better on android
Is there a rom with a WORKING gps not one that works under supervision? as I like to use the gps apps like maps and copilot etc
OK well just changed a couple things and now gps is working
I dont know whether Radio revision affects it but downgraded it to 2.12 from 2.15 and left my gps location as europe after clean flash and now getting a gps fix under 10 secs mass improvement to before (2 mins to never)
might try with UK ntp.pool settings, and see the results
Edit as you like, but < 10 seconds is about as good as it gets, don't fixit if it ain't broke!
well tried it anyways and it is even better >5 seconds is this a radio related. If so gotta write down this radio version for future reference
You get quicker fixes when you've already recently had one, I don't think a <5 seconds cold fix is possible.

This is intresting.
Is it possible to keep us updated in a couple of days to check if the quick fix is consistant with radio 2.12 ?
I think it would interest alot of people.
My phone was also with 2.15 previously, as willzrocking i experienced mixed result with this radio and long time locks in any case.
This morning i was encouraged by this post and gave 2.12 a try, unfortunately for me it seems tobe no go, it seems worst than 2.15 on my phone.
In the same road to my office (10 minutes by car) 2.15 was able to lock 1 or 2 minutes before i reached destination (not really usefull...), 2.12 was not able to catch the signal.
I'm going to try have a lock in a plain surface later on today and will let you know the results.
Cheers.
Still working good for me... I am using the Cleandroid Rom but even though the gps is now very good the network keeps dropping alot and sometimes randomly the H signal disappears and replaced with G sometimes until I switch between flight mode so think I am gonna have to sacrafice the GPS until I find a better radio/rom
I've just put on 2.12 here in the UK and don't notice any real difference at all
EDIT: ooh think i've now solved it for me!
I also have an Orange San francisco ( ZTE BLADE) and that always locks on GPS very quickly...
so i had a delve into the blade's gps conf and i notice a few parts were commented out that arent for my HD2.
the parts i just added/commented out are.
I added
INTERMEDIATE_POS=0
and commented out the following to look like this
#SUPL_HOST=supl.google.com
#SUPL_PORT=7276
Now after locking/unlocking the phone and rebooting i get a lock onto GPS in under 10 seconds every time, whereas before it was very hit or miss!
Out of curiosity, those who have problems, how many have the app GPS STATUS installed? i'm wondering if it is causing a problem too.
this thing is driving me crazy... as the gps is!
2.12 was worst than 2.15, then i tried 2.08, same as 2.12. So i did a roll-back to 2.15 and tried to put crunchie's settings into my gps conf.
Didn't notice any difference so i tried to remove gps status.
After reboot i made the following test:
launching google navigator 3 times, every time i placed the phone in the same position where i was sure to get good signals.
Between each tentative i removed the phone from its position, closed navigator, turned off and then on the gps, replaced the phone back.
It took 20 secs to do this operation.
I got a fix each time, which is good, but look at locktimes...
1) around 90" (good)
2) around 3 minutes...
3) around 4 minutes...
It seems like it doesn't save gps data previously scanned, every time it's like a cold start...
I really don't know if there is any way to fix this at the moment but i would really like to know which is the difference between my phone and yours. Maybe 'cause mine is brand new? (i received it the 4th of jan)
Very important for me too. So my parts:
RADIO: 2.15.50.14
ROM: MDJ's CyanogenMod 7 v. 2.6
COUNTRY: Latvia (EUROPE)
Actually this is the only Android build where I got any week GPS signal. Previously - nothing.
Well, on WM 6.5 GPS works extremely good and stable with the same radio.
I am using GPS Status (to download some A-GPS data, which really does not helps).
I live in Latvia, but my gps.conf was set to europe.pool.ntp.org. I was able to get some week connection today with a fix in approx. 10 minutes. When I changed my gps.conf to my country: lv.pool.ntp.org GPS stopped working. Will try now to revert back.
P.S. My friend with Desire HD also living in Latvia has north-america.pool.ntp.org, but still gets fix in about 30 sec. And changing gps.conf and downloading A-GPS data does not help at all.

That sounds promising, so I've edited my gps.conf to match and I'll get back and let you know how I get on with it.
Incidentally, I used Navigator today for the first time in ages and didn't expect it to work as I flashed a new ROM over the weekend, but it worked a treat. I'm in the UK but it was set to use a North American NTP server, so I'm surprised it worked!
Glad it did though

Do you mean program GPS Status? Well, I'm using it to find a sattelites and then quickly switching to Google Maps. )))
Why do you think it can mess up the GPS reception? I'll try not to use that. Thank's.

When I open it to see what satellites are connected then go back to maps, maps is no longer as accurate even though gps status says it's locked.
It looks like it makes maps revert back to wifi or gsm triangulation.
Then if I go back to gps status, force close it then reopen it, gps status is no longer able to lock on nor Is maps.
So, I open maps, leave it for upto 20 seconds (usually under 10) it locks on to 2M accuracy
If I then open GPS Status, it says no satellites.
Exit back to maps and I'm no longer locked on and it doesn't seem to lock on again (cold start maybe.)
Then , force close gps status
Force close maps.
Reopen maps and I'm locked on again after a 'cold start' and then maps behaves itself again with under 5-10 second locks even after reboots and gps off/on

Oh, well, thank's. I experienced it today on a road, that after GPS Status, my Google Maps were jumping from GPS sattelites to Mobile Network Stations.
One more wish from you. Can you please post your gps.conf in a QUOTE here? I tried now this:
SUPL_HOST=lbs.geo.t-mobile.com
SUPL_PORT=7275
NTP_SERVER=xtra1.gpsonextra.net
XTRA_SERVER_1=http://xtra1.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_2=http://xtra2.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin
XTRA_SERVER_3=http://xtra3.gpsonextra.net/xtra.bin

Actually not having anything with t-mobile, but I still managed to connect... after a while, after a long while....

GPS not working on 2.3 ROMs

hi.
It seems now that every 2.3 based ROM supports GPS, and people say they get a very fast lock.
But I was never able to get a lock with any ROM, I have tried several versions of MIUI and several versions of CM7.
The only ROMs I am able to use GPS in, are Froyo based.
Even there, it takes around 5 minuted to get a lock.
I did the hardware fix half a year ago, it helped very much because I was using Froyo then (it took only 5 minutes vs 15 minutes to lock) but now it doesn't lock at all.
Any solution?
Thanks.

i applied that fix and noticed no improvement, unfortunately. i had great hopes for it from reading the comments others had left about success using it.
the gps on my vibrant (running CM7) is quite odd.. it seems to 'know' where i am, but won't ever get off of the 'searching for gps' message, and of course, won't switch gears to the point where it actually tells me where to go. but if i want to look at my location on my phone and follow the 'map' it displays, or read the directions, it sort of works, in a hinky sort of way.
Try a program called GPS Aids from the market - Ive had mixed results with it.

I think that you are using the AGPS function, which uses the WiFi and mobile network to determine your location. It is much less accurate than GPS, which doesn't work.
About the GPS fix and GPS AIDS, I will try later and post the results, thanks!

that makes sense.. its just getting rough position with the mobile network.. (i usually have wifi antennae off)
last night i downloaded a gps test tool from the market... ZERO satellites... and mine worked perfectly when i was running Axura. i'll probably be going back there very soon.

[Q] GPS: lots of sats in sight, none connected.

I've played Ingress for several months. One thing I do daily is recharging 20~30 portals during my commute by bus -- open Ingress after getting on a bus, waiting for the GPS to get fix, and collect XMs and recharge.
However, in the recent one or two months, my phone's not able to get me GPS fix near my home -- even on a square. GPS status shows many sats in yellow, but none becomes green. Rebooting the phone doesn't solve it.
When I get to another place, two or three kms from my home, my phone still can't get fix. What's strange is, if I reboot my phone there, and try GPS again, it usually gets instant fix.
Also, I can always get instant fix anywhere near my working place.
I have two questions:
1. Which of the software parts affects GPS performance? I switched among multiple ROMs during these months, but I should be always on cloudyfa's KK baseband.
2. Anyone else has encountered the situation that you stand on a square on a not-so-cloudy day, with no high building around, 24 sats in sight, but your phone just can't connect to any? Has anyone solved it? How?
Try using faster fix app and change the ntp to your location and see if that helps

Download GPS Test from the Play Store, go to the app settings and press Update A-GPS while your data connection is on. Wait a few moments and the app should lock on to GPS satellites. You should be good to go from there.

GPS Status from play store also has that A-GPS downloading feature, and that's not helping me either.
If not changed nothing in software that can cause bad reception (build prop edit, rom, ...) try something hardware

Thank you! Good video. I will try it after having tried all software ways.
Which properties in build.prop affects GPS performance? I'd like to check them first.
Also, try TopNTP app before opening up the phone.
I've been through a few smartphones and running various ROMs on each, here's my observation.
a. If the phone's gps takes long time but eventually locked then those apps mentioned above do help.
b. If the phone's gps take long time and never locked then those apps above are useless, they won't do a thing.
My advice 1: restart the phone and see the gps gets locked reasonable fast, if not
My advice 2: changing ROM. Do focus on firmware first before touching hardware.
Long time means 15' or more.
