[Q] Need help with Flashing roms on mt4g. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Thanks in advance to anyone who helps.
I am not new to development or flashing Roms. However all my experience has been with the galaxy s lineup.
My friend has a mytouch 4g and I want to root his phone and install a custom rom for him.
I was wondering what you guys use to root, and also what you use to flash. Can I just install cwm from clockwork and install them that way? Or do I need something else?
Thanks!

The best thing to do is root using the method from the Unlockr. Which i have in my signature "how to root with root.sh". Its the same method. That should work for you. If it doesn't you might want to check the "post your eMMC serial number" thread in the general section. There is alot of valuable information in that thread regarding phones do not root using root.sh.
If you just want to force root the phone regardless of it being a good or bad eMMC you can use the ./gfree method.
as far as how to flash ROMs, you can just download Clockwork ROM Manager and flash the Clockwork Recovery image, do a back up, wipe, then flash the ROM.

Thanks. So clockwork works without any modifications. On the vibrant it worked just by flashing the recovery. But with The gs4g Krylon360 had to work long and hard to come up with a recovery and it involves replacing a system/ file. Lol
Anyways. Thanks for the advice. I'm not familiar with that way of rooting but I will look it up.

Yea, the MyTouch 4G doesn't have any goofy work arounds once you get s/off.
The MyTouch4G has a security protocol that will prevent us from perma-rooting our phones. You need to manually turn the security protocol off. That is why you see us asking newbs if their "s" is on or off (s-on/s-off). i have links for both in my signature.

You're quick to reply!
Yea I've heard about that with the g2. Thanks for the help. I can't see your signature in the app. Ill check it out when i get home.
Thanks a ton.

Actually I work for T-Mobile. I'm getting the sensation 4g on Monday! So I need to get used to HTC anyway.
And I just got gingerbread on my gs4g! Lol. And I'm about to switch.
Love the galaxys

Dude, he was asking for HELP, not to be made fun of...
no, back to the question at hand. to root the mytouch 4g, you would need to follow one of the guides to rooting found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866175
that link also has links to all the other things you will need, but Ill provide them here as well for time's sake.
once you do that and have s-off, you will need to flash an alternate recovery to flash a rom. Normally, you would need to install rom manager to do this, then flash clockwork recovery through there, but to install gingerbread, it requires a special version of the recovery which is not officially supported by rom manager yet, so you will need to either install through fastboot (follow the steps provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852905 )
or else follow the instructions provided by TruBlue found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10670110#post10670110
once you have the right recovery installed, youll need to wipe data and caches, and then flash the gingerbread rom of your choice.
As for what apps you will need for all this: ROM Manager, as I mentioned (the premium version if you'd like to take advantage of CM built in nightly build update notifications). Titanium Backup (for backing up all your apps so you dont have to manually redownload them all, and have your app data intact on the new rom), and Root explorer (optional) for a root-enabled file manager.
Any further questions, feel free to send me a PM. Thanks to Tiger013 for compiling the list of everything, grankin for his Root how-to's, and TrueBlueDrew for his how to on install CWM 3x.

Unrooting from.....

I just traded some one an HD7 for this MyTouch 4G.... Yayyy, back to Android ! Well, they already have it rooted and everything, but I like to start from scratch when I am modding my phones. I am coming from a Cliq so I'm not familiar with HTC. How should I go about unrooting the phone? And where should I start in the forum while trying to get familiar with modding this phone?
If it's already rooted, why unroot it? I would just make sure the latest recovery is installed, wipe it, and flash whatever ROM you want.
I'd you are looking to mod it... then you want to keep it rooted.
Its a good thing. You can even run the stock rom and make backups of all your apps and settings.
Root is good!

+1....As Rockstarar said, the pd15img makes you go back to being unrooted. The pd15img is the stock OS image and the thread will on that will explain how to flash it.
After that I'd say check out the "Guide to permaroot" thread, that will explain the process in getting rooted permanently. Next you should check out the thread for clockworkmod Recovery 3.0.0.6, thats a version that enables us to flash both 2.2 and 2.3 base roms. Alot of ppl miss that thread and end up using the wrong recovery to flash roms and as a result they get boot loops.
After that you're good to go! Got alot of options in the development section to choose from, so pick ur poison
I remember when I jus started this thing I had no clue where to start so that should give you a nice guideline on how to get going
Thanks!! I can't wait to get started =P.
Good luck!

Yes roms in the developement section here can all usually be flashed through cwm unless otherwise stated. And I've never needed to unroot, but odin is a windows gui for flashing tar's(which are roms usually official and modems). You use Odin when you want to go back to complete stock, or modems usually. You can do other things with Odin such as flash custom recoveries like cwm. Odin is your bestfriend if you mess something up, always make sure to use a premium blackberry or other thick cable besides the one that came with the phone when using odin.(most people have difficulties with stock cable.)

First you need to get temporary root access, follow this link
http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/
Then follow this link and the instructions on how to get permanent root access.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/11/30/how-to-gain-permanent-root-and-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
This is how I rooted my G2 when I had it. After, you can follow the tutorials on how to load custom ROMs.
Always remember to do a nandroid backup before flashing anything on your phone.
Thanks to theunlockr.com.
Good luck!

if he has the latest ota, he needs to follow the whole downgrade, root, s-off process in the g2 dev section.
use the built in search on xda to find it.
True, my G2 had Android 2.2 when I rooted; since then it got the gingerbread update.

On an unrelated note, though, I totally used theunlockr to root my phone ;D although gfree was highly recomended shortly afterwards, I never ran into any problems, which I thought was cool xD VIRTUAL HIGH FIVE BRO!
I rooted my G2 by following the cyanogenMod wiki. It's really easy to follow and it worked like a charm. Even my myTouch 4g used the exact same procedure. If you are on gingerbread firmware you will need to downgrade. Guide for that is here and then root the phone with this guide here. From then on you can flash any rom you'd prefer.
I have op 2.3 this hard I don't under stan how to down grade I have down load adb in windows 7 when I put the files on sd and I pull cmd out and put the codes in I get nothing so how do I run adb is the any other way to down grade and get root easy

First off, this is the wrong section. But don't worry, everyone makes mistakes lol.
And now for the recovery. If you could get into your phone, like start it up and stuff. Install this app --> http://www.4ext.net/get.php?apk
Then install the app and open it. The rest is straight forward. It will install the recovery for you. Hope it helps.
Well if u installed recovery from ROM manager then u already flashed a recovery. U can boot into recovery from ROM manager app.
The link that notorious is providing is to flash a different recovery in the same way.
