What dialer app are you using? - Streak 5 General

One of the most frustrating issues I have with my Streak is more put less daily force closes and hangs requiring restarts. Although I am using Steve's 1.19 and have been for a while, it seems that nearly all events occur around the time that the phone its being used as a phone.
I have tried Dialer One and Rocket dial but suspect that these are massively memory hungry apps and that they are contributing to the problems. The standard phone app is unusable as it doesn't have T9 search, but I suspect it is light on memory as it loads very quickly.
I can use the Streak all day without an issue but this instability when I use the phone app on one out of ten calls is getting me to the point where I am really wondering what other phones are out there.

Hope this helps
Yes I have this problem, I found that using the streak 7 dialler (install option in install.txt file) is much better and easier to use it does have its flaws but I find it much better!!

i really like ray dialer in the market its free

Yes the dialer on the streaker is annoying but only because it doesn't remain in portrait, there is not a alphabet header on the contact list, and it doesn't pull up contact choices as you dial in the number. I tried quite a few dialers and I cant recall but I think ray dialer has t9 and number search. However it doesn't completley replace the phonde app.

FYI shortcut for the built in Froyo dialer - Hold the Menu key when in the Contacts to bring up the keyboard \ Search box. This is necessary because Dell (in their infinite wisdom) thought it best to remove the dedicated search key.
Just realized I didn't address the OP. Sorry. I suppose you have gone into manage apps and clear data on Dialer and Dialer Storage?

I had the same issues on DJ_Steve's 1.90 - and ended up going stock and rooted 354... MUCH more stability! However the system phone app still sucked out loud so I installed GO! Contacts which also has a dialer... very nice and works like a charm with full "match as you enter" dialing with favorites.... I find I no longer use the default phone app (thank God) and it's free with some fairly good themes (I use wallet.) I replaced my default phone icon app with the Go Dialer and I'm all set
Good Luck!

I think I would like to try this too as I nearly threw my phone out of the car after yet another crash.
Do you mind pointing me to the threads that will show me how to go back to stock and instal.354, I am on EU 315 by the way. Will it involve a total clean out or does it install over 1.19?

i use dialer one it is the least annoying of the bunch and works 100% of the time... would love a big ass green phone connect button though.

Ray dialer meets all of the criteria set forth above. T9, contact photos, big a$$ green button, big a$$ number keys, small memory footprint, FREE!!!! Well worth trying out.

i'm using go dialer and it works quite good

Ive messed with pocket cm and a few others. What are you all using for a CM? Anything that loads at least as fast as the stock one?
I use the Pocket CM .16 It loads a bit faster than .15. If you find other let us know.
DJ
pocketcm obviously.
PocketCM .16.
I use PocketCM also...just started actually. I'm having a few problems though. Any help would be appreciated.
1) In SMS, the keyboard pops up even when I'm using the built-in. I can't figure out how to stop it.
2) My outgoing SMS disappear for some reason
3) When I get a new SMS message, I still get the notification from the native messaging program, and not from PocketCM

Can't help with the last two. I get the notifications, didn't think of it as abnormal. The sent message disappearing was just a matter of scrolling down for me.
But the first with the keyboard popping up...
Go to the very top, middle of screen, press it, press "choose SIP" and choose "menubutton.nosip.tex".
If you're using PocketCM keyboard, that is notorious for getting "stuck". I removed it. You have to soft reset to get rid of it.
Thanks Frankenbike. That worked for the SIP.
As for the sent messages disappearing...they're nowhere. As soon as I navigate away from a conversation, they diseappear, and when I go back to a conversation, all of the sent ones are gone and I just have the incoming ones. It's weird.
hey, you need to go into mail settings and tell it to save copies of sent messages, then it will keep all of your sent messages there (don't delete them from the default program either...or they dissappear)
as for the sent message thing, if you look there is a cab file for a registry edit that gets rid of the sent message notification
as for the default messaging taking over... 0.15 would take over sms, but 0.16 won't... yet, it has been discussed on pocketcm.com, and apparently when the full release comes it, 0.16 will do that as well.
goodluck
I'm fed up with PocketCM. It's a great project and service for the community, but it's majorly buggy with every release. Not to mention, I've tried all the suggestions to try and stop it from defaulting as the sms program, but nothing changes.
I don't know what he's talking about when he says change your settings.ini when you received a new text.
I've looked at funcontact and icontact, and both seem much more robust and polished, then again funcontact is not free. I'm gonna give them a shot and I'll report back here =D

remember that pocketcm is still a beta program. its only v.15 stable release. I expect great things once it reaches v1
I tried Finger Friendly, PocketCM (which is good) and a couple others; I just decided to stick with stock. With quick index and touchflo, I can get to whomever I want to call pretty quick...
...and its just one less app loaded and taking room/memory.
Pocket CM Rocks....!!!! HAVENt used anything else. Love my Photo for contacts.. With my Outlook. Its great...
SMS PocketCM NOT sending
I downloaded PocketCM .19 a few days ago. I sent an SMS once and after that it stopped working. What can i do to fix this?
random access
I use the HTC app random access - seems to work well, has all the letters on the side of the screen for finger friendly scrolling. I took it from the all HTC OEM apps post.
FunContacts by vito technology looks like a good smooth app and loads/responds fast (very similar to pocketCM), but I will stick with Random Access until they integrate the SMS (coming soon!) <-- as promised on the website for the past 3 months lol ...http://www.iwindowsmobile.com/
EDIT: of course if Windows Mobile 6.1 delivers as promised with SMS messaging no one will care
definitely a random access guy, myself. tried pocketcm, hated the integrated texting. i like the texting that comes with WM. if there was a way to completely remove it from that app it would be great but ill stick to RA until then
I use icontact. Its easy to use and scrolls with my finger.
I like Pocket CM, much better than the built in WM one. Integrated SMS is great. The built in WM SMS is so clumsy.

You need to hold Send for about a sec or 2. he created a delay and i think on his website he mentions how to lower or higher the threshold
using the original sms prog with pocketcm i find works better

New Xperia X10 User - Thoughts and Help Required Please.

Hello All,
I am new to the forum and hope you are all well? I have scoured the forum here and have found it very useful indeed...please read my post any help is welcomed and appreciated as a newbie to the 'Droid'!
Well well what can I say about the Xperia X10, of which I have had the pleasure of using for around a week with Orange.
My initial thoughts about this device is that I am impressed as I have never used a 'Android' type mobile before.
I think that the phone is very well designed and feels great to use, especially when compared to my last mobile 'LG Viewty'.
The weight, style, colour (Black) layout and quality are in great balance and I believe Sony have done quite well here.
HOWEVER....I do have a couple of 'constructive' criticisms to add.
It seems that the consensus point towards a number of issues which I too am encountering.
1. For the main the battery life is awful and although not a problem requires charge every day at least. I do however understand that the mobile is running many things. I.e. large processor.
2. The text issue is my main bug bear here, I have a lot of trouble with pressing wrong keys, sending texts before I am ready as the delete button is next to a return key which on most occasions sends the text early! I find the 'qwerty' keypad very difficult to use indeed and cannot understand why there is not a 'telephone T9' style input option on such an advanced mobile??? I have downloaded the 'Handcent SMS' which improves the look and ease of test with the 'Ipod' style conversation. However now i have two icons in the top bar advising of a new text argh!
Is there a bigger keyboard or T9 predictive text program I can install? I also would like to use 'Swype' which looks impressive although only at the BETA stage, I have downloaded the '5612.Droid.apk' file but don't know how to install this please help! Texting takes so long now!
3. Timescape I find 'rinses' the mobiles CPU and lags heavily so I have unfortunately had to revert to the 'normal' home screen which is unbelievably fast so no prob there.
4. Facebook updates - I keep receiving an icon (top left white arrow with red exclamation mark) advising that could not update notifications as cant connect to internet???
5. In cal volume is a little poor, maybe ill use cotton buds!
So the help I need is clear any thoughts would be more than welcome...
Despite my problems I am more than happy with this amazing device and look forward to update 2.1 and exploring its possibilities.
JP
Hi there,
You can deselect notifications in the "normal" messages settings if you are using Handcent for your texting. That way you will only receive notifications from Handcent in your notification bar.
If you want to install an app like swype which is not available from the market yet you need to use an app installer and also allow "Unknown sources" in settings/applications. Im using an app from the market called "Apps Installer" to do just that, but im running a rooted magic. I dont know if you can do it on the x10 which isnt rooted yet.
hope this was helpful to you
I use the astro file explorer- it does installs also. works on my x10 no rooting.

Also looking for one of these applications that can locate ur phone when lost or delete all date remotely and render the phone broken.
Please feel free to add any other TOP fav apps to the lists.

bump
im sorry but im going to bump this i cant believe nobody has any experience with either of the two situations i have posted.
ive tryed out a good few backup apps...free versions thus far...but im happy to pay for one that can back-up everything on the phone...ie settings etc!

Try using wavesecure for locking your phone in case it's stolen. I think it tells you where the phone is and stuff too. And it locks the phone as soon as someone trys changing the sim. Give it a shot.. i liked it.

It'll ask you for a password. So you can enter that and you'll be in.
I'm now using the SlideIT keyboard - where you slide your finger through all the letters of the word you want to type and it works it out for you and pop's it right in there... it's so very cool to use.. makes me smile everytime I use it.! I can type quicker than I ever did now.
and Hendcent for text messages - it's much more natural to use than the standard.

SGS Rants & Complains all you want here

[Q] Phone app, Contacts app rant
I love my SGS, hence i want to rant about it
Dialing from contacts, phone takes always one extra step than other phones.
if i already took the time to set defaults manually,
(1) why do i have to select the number to call again (contacts, solution could be viewing button on far right from the contact name) or
(2) when i use smart dial and am satisfied with first suggestion why do i have to select it then press call (phone app, if i want to call other suggestions they already show it separately in a drop down)?
after a month of using my sgs i still hold the phone to my ear and wait for a while, until i realize i hadn't pressed the green button.
(3) in contacts app i can search my friends by nickname, but ONLY IF i edited their nickname through contacts app, i.e. if it's imported from gmail and i never edited it on my phone it fails to find by nickname.
(4) smart dial is not so smart as it can't search by nickname, unless it's the only field for the contact in the phone's phonebook, huh? so i have to manually add new contacts to phone, then link them, for my closest people (phone app) if it's okay for a handful of people but starting from 20 i start cursing samsung app devs
(5) for my business contacts... it avoids searching by last name, what? (phone app)
then the editing, grouping etc... but since i don't add people daily i can make it work through other apps.
so are there solutions, that you know of, to these woes ?
1. I think the default number only applies outside the contact app (like a shortcut). But if you open it from contact it has to show you all the contact info (otherwise how else can dial the other numbers of that contact that is not the default??).
2. I think this is to cater for the 3G video call option.
3/4/5. It is kind of lame the phone app search only matches from beginning of name and not the entire string. (Hopefully new firmware can cater to this). Luckily the global search (i.e. long press menu key) matches everything. You may want to use this to find instead of opening the phone/contact app. It is much faster
In the contacts settings you can set the order to last name before first name, then you can search by last name.
If you want to call default number just flick the contact name right. Flick it left for message.

Hey thanks for the tip
was it in the manual? (which i never read for any device....)
Well thats just great.
I am seriously so fed up with Samsung its not even funny. I am never buying one of there products ever again.
I said that I would never buy another Samsung product after my last Samsung phone, the Instinct. That was by far the worst phone I have ever owned. I with I had have stuck to that promise.
Oh well. I guess I learned the wrong way.
I think I might just try to sell this pos for as much as I can get for it and buy an HTC Desire HD.
Piece of crap! Grrrrrrrrr
I have put up with this phones issues for months, thinking wait for froyo and see if it helps things. To my delight froyo just became available for o2 uk customers, so I quickly updated. I was like a child with a new toy...but now feel like its broke/lost!
Firstly firstly beaufiful widgets doesn't seen to work properly on froyo. But my main gripe is the new found super lag. I cant even type this message without the phone stuttering! Scrolling up and down in anything...it stutters...like wtf?
Whats my best bet? Hard reset? If so how do I do it? If I backup my contacts on kies will it restore to a factory rest phone?
Any advice is welcome!

I feel your pain.
Even going to JPO theres still lag, and the number of hacks that have to be done to get away from RFS and make the phone actually perform like it should is crazy.
I ended up defecting to an iPhone 4, but still have the SGS waiting for the day when its lag free and performing the way it should.
IMO the SGS "could" be way better than the iPhone, but it just needs Samsuck to pull the finger out.

I did the same and defected to iPhone 4. I will be selling my Galaxy S as I don't believe Samsung will resolve the issues. They have had plenty of time to do this already and nothing has happened. Even with the XDA Developers showing them the problems and coming up with solutions they still have a laggy phone whcih lacks in so many way's. Don't even get me started on Kies.
In the end I bought an iPhone 4 and iPad wifi. Using iTunes and everything is working correctly.
Do yourself a favour...........
No no, its a great phone
Just need to apply mods/hacks/roots etc to make it work apparently and when update comes out you undo it all then redo it all again and hope for best.
I think it would be a great phone if it didn't lag so much.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
JP3 is sh*t. use another firmware
use doc's or darky's and wait for cm6.1 that'll surely be free from lags.
I will have to disagree. I got my galaxy s 3 months replacing iphone 3gs. It came with eclair 2.1 and it was perfect. I did the froyo update the day it came out with the reg hack and kept on getting freezes and force close. Did a factory reset and everything was fine. Did the new official update JPA with no reset and again perfect. The only program that lagged a little was email. Did the one click lag fix and now everything is smooth and fast. With over 50 apps i have no problems at all. My only gripe is that it should have more available ram and with flash on the browser stutters on flash heavy sites.
Apart from that i am very happy. By the way a get sattelite lock on my gps from a cold start in 30 seconds!

What most users are forgetting is when you upgrade the ROM from Eclair to Froyo you MUST perform a Factory Reset.
Doing so will eliminate a lot of the problems with current Apps.

If you had a full screen keypad then you wouldn't be able to see your contacts and call logs as you put a number in. I would hate that, cause I use that feature constantly.

Well, if it's a "full screen phone pad" then how could it? It takes up the whole screen Just working with what the man gave me.
Try MIUI if you want a completely different dialer experience.
I came to XDA to make a new post, but felt this would be a good post to piggy back off of.
What are some good dialer alternatives? I recently installed cyanogen mod and am loving it, with a few exceptions. The stock HTC dialer was so convenient because you just had to start dialing the contacts number, or name and you would get an instant contacts search. It seems like now you need to manually go to a new tab, then find the contact. I really liked how slick the old (stock) way was. Are there any similar implementations for CM6.1 rom?

I was in the same boat....
Dialer One is a great alternative that works like the stock HTC one.
I find the YouLu Address Book dialer has significantly less lag than DialerOne.
Still looking for an app that can give me a full screen dial pad like on the droid X. Ant suggestions?
