White vs dark gray back differences? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I haven't been able to touch a white Galaxy Tab 10.1 yet. But I've seen lot of unboxing and review videos of it and the white back looks very glossy without any visible texture that I can see.
The dark gray model has a back that is matte and has a brushed aluminum looking texture (it's plastic though). I can run my fingers across the back and feel the many tiny grooves that make up the brushed effect.
Before buying my Tab I notice some reviewers of the white model complain it was a little slippery, which worried me a little. The dark gray one has a great grip though. But since I haven't touched the white one, but if it's really as smooth and glossy as it looks, I would think it would have less grip than the gray model.
Wondering if anyone has gotten a chance to touch both and had any comments?

well i have the white. was gonna buy the other one at my best buy since they had both. but got white since it stood out more. its a little slick. but not too bad. plus im gonna get a case

Glossy white = teh sex kitten
Fake metal = teh Meh...

I was on the fence, the grey (to me anyway) reminded me of some cheap old laptop back. I got the white one. The glossy plastic back reminds me a bit of the glossy black back on my Samsung Fascinate phone...which I like. The texture of the grey just not as appealing.
Now, if they had a glossy black back...I'd probably go for that!

I've used both, and if you're worried about actually grip, the white is not really more slippery than the grey. The grey only FEELS less slippery cause of the brushed texture, but it's not quite enough friction to make a material difference. It is basically the same plastic as the white. But still, I personally preferred the feel of the grooves on my fingers than not.
I think white vs grey is more about your aesthetic tastes. Whether you want something that exudes more of flashy, shiny, cool persona (often mistaken as an ipad), or something more subdued, serious, professional (like the Xoom/Flyer).
Of more importance is the fact that the back color determines the rim style. Whether grey or white, you don't really look at the back, but the color of the back decides the matching rim which frames the front you always look at. So, when you look at your GT screen, would you like it to be framed by a shiny silver lining, or a matte grey lining? That's the choice that you need to make. Again, I preferred the understated matter grey rim.

too much bling for the white. and it will get scratched easily.
Grey FTW!

That was my main worry when I was buying. I went dark gray with the texture because I figure it'll hide any possible scuffs and marks easier than the glossy white would.

My wife's white fascinate was actually why I decided to buy gray. That thing is so slippery that I couldn't stand the thought of killing my 600 purchase. That being said, I know ill be getting the folio case anyway when one of these local dummies get 'em in stock. For now I have the Belkin slim.

There is no black GT 10.1 out inthe US, at least not yet. It's either white or grey back like the photos above. (Of course the front bezel is black in all models)
If a blackone did come out, that would be cool though.

White version is exclusive to Best Buy?
I think I actually prefer the look of the white. I also prefer to not pay sales tax on a $600 device, so I'll probably stick with my faux-metal backed version.

got the grey 32
The white one just reminds me too much of Apple products... and let's be honest this is the anti-apple... anti-closed system club right?
So I say... Go grey... the only way... it's not white... and it's not gay. (no offense if u r)

Didnt matter to me I got the first one in 32gb that they pulled out and it ended up being gray. Its just plastic

I did store pick up. I ordered metallic gray one but when I got back home, I noticed I got a white one. I don't really think this is too slippery but it feels far from heavy duty. I'm ordering shield and leather portfolio

Case Color: White vs black Poll

Rogers (in Canada) is coming up with this phone this week. Who is picking up which color? I can't decide, lets see which is the most popular one
Black, of course. The white one doesn't have a rubberized panel at the back. My tip is for you to try both of them out before you buy one.
yea ill take black too.
the white one has the same back panel as the black. slightly sparkly pearl white kind of colour with the same texture as the black.
sign me up for the WHITE one, whenever I can get it with ATT 3G for $650 or less!!!!

What? It doesn't have the same back panel in Sweden. Edit: The white one has a glossy back panel while the black one has a rubberized back panel and isn't glossy at all.
the white one i saw in the UK orange store had a matte white back cover....
hmm looking at pictures of the white one in the phonearena review it certainly seems glossy. the one i saw might have been different cos it was a dummy unit

Strange... The ones I've tested has a glossy back cover.
Well, there's things that never will be right I know,
And things need changin' everywhere you go,
But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right,
You'll never see me wear a suit of white.
Or a phone
I'll never wear a white suit, but I love my white one .. *lol*
In Germany they have glossy backs.
But it would be easy to change it, if it becomes scrached or arubberized would become available.
I have a white X10 and a friend of mine has a black one, I really love the white version and although you may think the white one is very hard to keep clean the black one is actually the fingerprint magnet. The white one just keeps looking clean . The backpanel of the black one is indeed rubberized and the white one has a glossy backpanel (at least here in the Netherlands):

I can confirm that my white one from orange has a glossy plastic back cover. It is not rubberised and doesn't offer as much grip in the hand.
However it still feels good in the hand. It also came completely free of any branding. No logos on the device no operator start-up screens or up apps, just the APNS.
white for me
My Missus reckons that the white ones are targetted at Girls... (I thought it looked good in white 'til she said that!!)
at first i didnt like the white one but its grown on me. However the ALS is a bit ugly, black dot on top of the screen. Plus even though it looked nice, i thought the black one looked more professional (i wear suits a lot). Oh well, no regrets. Love the phone!
Im glad I didnt have to make that choice, in the UK the only network to have the white one is Orange, and I dont get a signal at home with them, so black it was...
Might be a fingerprint magnet but it sure is pretty

Heh, it has a touchscreen. What did you expect?
yea its a real pity they dint add an oleophobic coating to the screen. any of you guys know of a screen protector that has said coating?
From the pictures i thought the X10 looked really ugly. The Nexus One, Milestone, and Desire looked so sleek in pictures. But after seeing the X10 in real life i changed my mind about the looks. Photos dont seem to do it justice.I thought the angles and angled surfaces look bulky and clunky in the pictures, but when u have it in your hand its great!
I bought the black one because thinking of long term the white one in my opinion will discolor over time; so you may get a "off" white color in 10 - 12 months time.
However, I do like the white one because I don't think there many white phone around which would make this phone unique.

Any one that owns a white or black model can you give me some insight. Which one looks better overall? More prone to scratches? stuff like that.
The white one also seems more special for some reason but I absolutely hate how the frame around the screen is white, it looks like it doesn't match even the new white iphone4 is like that I wish it was more like the 3gs how the front was black.
I choose the white model, 2 main reasons, i believe that the white is more scratch proof (or at least less noticeable) and it will be probably a little more exclusive.
I had previously preordered the black one and when I went to the roadshow to collect it I saw the white version on display and found that it looks nicer.
Since I can't change the preordered colour there and then I'm using the black version now but if I had a chance to choose again I'll definitely take the white one.
The black version looks like any other black coloured phones but the white version gives me a feeling of higher quality and more premium looking. I think it's because the white coating is really very nicely done.
Though like all other white gadgets you'll have to be more careful in handling it as any scratches etc will be more obvious on the white surface.
Do you guys know if they sell the back covers separate some where?
If they had made the white model purely white (including screen borders), I might have considered it. I always find the contrast with the screen border vs the rest of the phone to be a bit strange.

White Xbox looked rubbish.
White iphone will look rubbish.
White Xperia Play looks rubbish.
Heck, white cars even look rubbish.

Black. White is too look at me'ish. IMO
White does look very nice though.
I do wish they used rubber coating on the back plate though, stupid SE. If any phone needed to have a non slip surface it's this one.
I hope a 3rd party releases rubbery back plates.
got the white it's perfect for cleaning and scratch proof / dust proof

I spoke to Nergi. They took some pics of a unit they had. The black on the front is there, not white. So the glass around the screen is black. This must have been a mock-up shot of the white.

Did they say for sure that they would not ge getting the white one? At first, I thought that the white was exclusive to O2 but you can now get an unlocked one with the USA AT&T 3G 850/1900 bands. Probably the Canadian version. Maybe Verizon will offer later down the road.

Black or White

Anyone...who bought white could comment on it?
Well seeing as there is no Black version, it would be Blue vs White
Trick is the Blue is so dark that it looks like Black(the battery cover)!
Good Luck finding the White one. I gave up and got the "Blue" one and I could not be more happy. I like white devices...but I did not want to wait.
Blue and if you want white, get a white case.
Plus the prices for white are ridiculous.
Appears bigger than the blue ones. White is a classic clean look.
Lots of envy look from blue note users who wished they had waited.
I like white gadgets but the white bezel around deep black amoled screen doesn't really work for me. So I went for the hybrid solution: got the black (dark blue) Note and bought the white battery door separately.
We'll see how it looks, since I haven't received the white door yet. Hopefully, I'll get a look that's close to my old white iphone 3g.

I had a choice between the black/blue and the white and went for the white. It's clean, classy and looks great set up by the SuperAMOLED's vibrancy. I have posted some photos of my Note in the other White Note thread here on XDA.
In fact, I bought the white first but returned it after a few days. Now I got the black (or midnight blue) one, and I think this looks cooler than white..reasons:
1. The back cover of the white version is just plain, and the Samsung logo is boringly flat and non-reflective. In the dark version the back cover is beautifully textured, while the logo is not flat and is reflective.
2. The metallic ring around the white version is just simply metal. I like the gun metal color in the dark one.
The above two reasons make the dark version seems more subtle than the flashy white version.
3. Dusts are easily accumulated inside the gap between the glass and the metallic edge. This will be more obvious in the white version than the dark one.
I vote white (well since I have one), it looks pretty amazing. The black is too boring imho

Wonder if the white's colour will turn yellowish over time? It does happen to some white plastic products that I own, though admittedly these are not gadgets. I've heard about white iphone turning yellowish due to heating, or something to that effect.
I had some agnoising moments as well and finally went with the black. A white would mean it can get dirtier more easily, may even turn yellow (though not proven), and I may even have problems finding accessories that match. Besides, as someone pointed out in another thread, black is more immersive when you're viewing videos, reading ebooks, etc.
Oh well, those are thoughts I used to console myself and to stop the paralysis by analysis process.

I still haven't gone to Verizon and pre ordered mines because I don't know what color to get. They told me they are positive that it won't sell out so I don't need to pre order anyway but still...What color did you pick and why? I'm leaning towards white but I'm not sure yet.
In my opinions the screen looks better with a black phone. I had a white s3 and always thought the screen didn't look that good. The I got the identical phone in black and everything just looked better.

I was a little tempted to get the white one. Initially, my reasoning was that ALL of my phones are always black. I was thinking that always having a black phone is getting a little stale, so maybe I'd mix it up a little. However, I'm really not that into white phones. I would have gone with a blue perhaps, like the S3 I used to have. Also, I've heard that the non-black versions of the Note 3 have more of a glossy back cover compared to the black one's more matte finish, so there was that too.

It certainly does. I have a white S3, still undecided on the Gnote (need to know more about real-life reception etc. and am still waiting for the dumbphone upgrade from another line to kick in so I can keep my unlimited data) but this solidified my decision to get a black one.
Black Note 3 & Black Galaxy Gear
Black Note 3 because the bezel will blend with the screen, also according to reviews it has a premium look compared to the white
Black Galaxy Gear because I don't want to draw anymore attention to it then I will already get. It will mostly hide under my sleeve.
I got black because I'm used to having black phones and also I think black looks better.

3] front camera and sensors blend with the bezel better instead of showing up like a turd in the punchbowl
4] black and chrome just looks good... white and chrome?... not so much (opinion)
5] reviews showing the feel of the black finish is better... I don't think it's more rubberized... just more of a soft matte finish instead of gloss

I like the grey.
I reserved black. I figure I'll just put a skin on the back to get the color I want.
Yeah I'm definitely holding out for the green one. That color combo is awesome.
I like the one with the matte back. Like the green one it says "coming soon." I wonder if they will be available when the phone starts shipping or after that.
Given that the OnePlus 5 is about to be announced and after that the Pixel 2 won't be far away, it sort of makes sense to wait and see what they're like. But I like the unusual design of this phone and the no logos attitude. My biggest hesitation is the lack of a headphone jack and whether or not it will support T-Mobile VoLTE and Wifi Calling.
I find the Pixel design to be boring, but it is pratical. It works with everything. It has the headphone jack.
Don't forget the Note 8, a different beast than the stock Android types but it is looking to bring a high level of badassedness to the fray.

In the Recode conference sitdown, he showed off a white model with a matte back. I really like the Ocean Depths, but would greatly prefer a matte finish. Hoping that's an option. I'm actually wondering if the glossy/matte option is available for all but the Grey, which is the only one shown without a glossy corner. Probably reading too much into it, though.

Hmm, I didn't think the white one was matte, but looking at the video again you're right, he describes it as matte. It's funny, because in the image you posted from the website only the grey version is shown with the matte back. Maybe there will be a matte option for each color. It's hard to make sense of how what Rubin says in the video goes along with what's shown on the website.

There was an official Twitter post from EssentialKeats (since been removed) where he said that there will be two white versions, the current one available for pre-order is Pure White and that's glossy, and another matte White in the future (I think he demoed it in that interview). It's not available yet due to "cosmetic" issues.
I prefer a matte finish as I detest glossy and reflective things so I will definitely go for the White or Grey once they're available.

It's not available yet due to "cosmetic" issues.
I prefer a matte finish as I detest glossy and reflective things so I will definitely go for the White or Grey once they're available.

Based on that information, it does seem like probably there will only be matte in the White and Grey versions.
Yeah, I hate shiney too. I just hope the cermaic is durable. I've seen mixed things, looking at YouTube videos of dropping cermic phones. Honestly, I'd be fine with high grade polycarbonate, like on the Nokia N9, which I think was a really nice design for it's time, even though being made out of one solid piece of polycarbonate. Don't get me wrong. The ceramic seems cool and beautiful, but it it turns out to be brittle that would be bad.
the white matte is shown off here at about 47 seconds

I really wish I could get the black one with the gold trim that the green model has.
I think I might actually prefer the glossy white. I don't know if it's because it's a prototype, but I don't like that the matte white color has white front screen bezels. It becomes ultra distracting, especially with that camera cut out. There's literally a white line running around that camera. It's far less noticeable on the glossy white on the promo adds where the back is solid white but the front is solid black.
I reserved the glossy black, although still unsure. The green looks different but feels a bit feminine (besides not knowing when it will be available). The glossy white looks nice on their website and would cover fingerprint smudges but the matte white shown at the event looked bad and so i have no idea how this glossy white would look in real.
So i went for the glossy black which is all black and make less prominent the camera and pins.
White front bezel trim. Different from what is on the essential website.

I'm really hoping that's a prototype or the matte white because the way that white line runs around the camera is the most distracting feature I've ever seen on the front of a phone.
Have there been any updates on the green version? Would buy it immediately )
I love the green, but I think the white is matte, so after seeing how the blank one attracts fingerprints, I'm leaning towards white now.

The white one is not matte. And it was confirmed recently (I think someone got a reply about this from customer support and reported on it) that the matte white version in the video where Andy Rubin introduced the phone was a prototype and will not be manufactured. So if you want matte, I think the Stellar Grey version will be the only option (assuming it actually ever gets released since Essential keeps saying only "soon," which turned out to mean nothing when they blew past their original deadline for releasing the phone).
Bummer. Well then maybe green with a clear case if I end up buying one at all. Though the reports on camera quality are dampening my enthusiasm. It's probably going to come down to the Pixel 2, V30, or the Essential.
