New 7" GTab - Galaxy Tab General

As the title suggests, seems like Samsung will release a new 7" Tab in the fall
http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-7-coming-this-fall-but-with-gingerbread-20110615/
What are some of your wish lists for the successor? I for one wished our originals were as slim as the new 10.1" Tabs.

Exynos, thinner/lighter with Super PLS screen

i dont think there is a big market for a 7-inch tablet....

Hmm why u say that?
We all have a 7' inch tablet..., but we dont need another one...
I dont know if the new version can compete with the htc flyer, let's see maybe the usb dock connector or the usbhostdrivers wateva will help us a little.

Original Tab, Blackberry Playbook, and HTC Flyer says no. As would the Asus Eee Pad MeMo and Acer Iconia A100 when they ship.
Tablets larger than 7" are great for when you are at home, but they do mean you have to carry a bag when you are out and about to put it in. 7" tablets fit neatly in jacket pockets and therefore are a much better proposition if you are intending to use it on the move.
I have a GalTab 7" and an Asus Transformer 10.1, and whilst they are both excellent devices, the TF cannot compete with the GT7 on portability, so if there is a chance of an upgraded GT7, I'm in the market for one.

Dave

+1 . but come on .. look at it from this way ...
as i'm or you the manager of samsung , do i release 2 10 & 8 at the same time or do i release 7&10 at the same time , for me it will be a big lose . specially when now the rumors comes out .. if they think to do it . probably will take a time perhaps next year , but hell no this year
NOTE : you are in 999post , do not post your 1000here

They mention;
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 will supposedly run Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread with TouchWiz 4.0 (no Honeycomb initially) and it will be able to make voice and video calls and send SMS , just like the Tab 8.9 (which does run Honeycomb).
If this is supported by the USA carriers to allow cell calls, then I will give my current tab to my daughter, and get the new one.

What about the release of the current 7 with rumors circulating mere months later of new tabs on their way? And like you said before, the 7 inch tab market is certainly more niche, so those that want updated hardware in the small form factor could care less about the other tabs and are waiting for an updated 7.
I have a friend at work that has already picked up one galaxy tab 7 for his wife about a month ago despite the other tablets that are available now. He is talking about getting another for himself soon. Equipped with this rumor, he might wait awhile to see if anything materializes.

I think 7 inches is perfect for a tablet. It's twice the size of my phone and still small enough to carry around easily. I have lust in my heart for the HTC Flyer. Not gonna lie.

I'll buy one. No regrets purchasing the 1st one.

If it is true, I am glad that they are using Exynos processor.
But for sure I wont buy new tab just couse of better processor, current one is great for web surfing+youtube+kindle+chess, they need to offer me something more. I would like to see how 8.9 tab fits in hand

Galaxy Tab 2 - 10.1inch, Honeycomb?

Just saw this on Engadget (via Pulse, hence the URL) and thought people might enjoy the read.
The Tab 2 seems to be following in the footsteps of the Xoom and LG Slate with the screen size. The article mentions no news or rumors of the destiny for our beloved Tabs but maybe the Samsung event will give us the good (or bad) news about the Honeycomb update.
I'm sure we'll 3.0 love as soon a system dump is available, but it'd still be nice of Samsung to give an official update seeing as this is the Tab which (pretty much) started the Android Tablet evolution.

i am very happy with my 7" tab. not too big not too small just perfect, the 10.1" will be a bit to big, but i do agree that we should get the 3.0 upgrade soon.....
Ok one of the main reasons I bought my tab (other than how amazing cool it is) is due to the 7" screen. I dont want a huge 10" screen!. I have a 32" bravia for a pc monitor and a 10.1" netbook, I got the tab for portability! I wish they would leave it at 7"
I sure hope they don't increase the screen size, that is one of the great differentiating factors between the Tab and the iPad. I loved my iPad but it was too big to carry easily. All of the new Honeycomb announced tablet's have the bigger screen and I was counting on Samsung sticking with the smaller form factor. Although the rumors of Apple considering a 7" iPad are interesting and would tempt me to back. The biggest disappointment with the Tab is the sluggishness I get and no Android browser I've tried is as smooth and responsive as Safari on the iPad.
I have reliable information saying this will be some sort of official google tablet(maybe for the european market?). The hardware will also blow everyones minds somehow. Don't know any details about that, but the competition will supposedly be playing catchup for quite some while before they get there. I guess it will be some fancy new screen at least. I'm looking forward to sunday as samsung will tell us everything:-D
and yes, it will be running honeycomb.
Whatever, i hope it is a google tab made by samsung. Either way samsung fecking sucks ass. I've had a captivate since the day before launch and its yet to receive froyo. What the hell is the hold up? I learned my lesson and not to buy their proprietary bull****. I jumped ship and got the nook cause of the development and me not having the patience for samsung's bull**** and lies. Yeah wait and hope for your dump. Good luck porting that. Even with the nexus s galaxy s still hasn't been ported. Knock knock .... anyone home. As you can tell, i have lost my patience for samsung.
I'll check back in 6months. I'd almost be willing to place a wager. FU samsung FU

The rumor mill is going strong today.
Rumors have said the iPad will be available in 7" form factor and now the Tab will be in 10" form factor.
Wouldn't that be funny, each side copying the other after each saying the other size was not good!

+1 to that.
Why would people port it to a phone? 3.0 is a tablet only firmware. 2.4 is the mix of Gingerbread and Honeycomb for phones.
And you jumped ship because of their development? A 3.0 port of the SDK? I'd rather keep this and wait for a proper port tbh.

WHo said anything about porting this to a phone? Well since the nook is an omap it shares a lot of similarities with droidx, and since motorolla dosnt have all this proprietary bs that they dont release code for. So when trying to port a nexus s to galaxy s, one would think it would be simple. So when you guys get that dump i seriously doubt it will ported. It's just my opinion. That would be samsungs fault cause a lot of their drivers are proprietary since they make the hardware. So if they don't release code then code will have to be reversed engineered and that takes time...lots of it. Well you can see where i'm going with this. Samsung could of released info today about how the new tab and how they are going to upgrade their other one that was released 6 months ago but they didn't and they don't give a fuk, seriously.
] About jumping ship? I was just saying that if you want upgrades in os's , well , samsung hasn't shown that they give a rats ass. I learned the hard way just like you guys will. I happen to choose the nook because of the hardware and how easily it is to port. Unlike samsung again with their proprietary drivers and what not. This isn't a nook vs tab debate. I think the galaxy tab is beautiful hardware is sexy but the buck stop there. Samsung needs to show us that they care and i just don't have that faith. So good luck with the dump. Hope that works out.

I misunderstood your phone comment, I thought you meant porting Honeycomb to the Nexus/Galaxy S, not Nexus to Galaxy
I haven't looked into the Nook myself so I'm unfamiliar with the specs/features of it and the work developers has done to it is shocking and amazing.
I agree wwith the comment about Samsung being *****es with their upgrades. But I personally think that with the developers we have, I think we *might* be able to pull off something spectacular with this incredible device.
Most of us jumped into it buying the Tab knowing of Samsungs backgroynd but that's the risk everyone takes with devices, right? I came from a Desire and since FroYo, we've been screwed by HTC. No Sense UI 2.0 eventhough ports of the Desire HD & Z have proven it could cope. All manufacturers do it in their own way.
*Hopefully* Samsung will change their ways.

I fully agree it would be unjust for the galaxy not to get some samsung love. But love and sumsung is almost an oxymoron. Specially when sammy's just getting in on this whole "open" thing. If they don't ;produce then this will be the straw that breaks the camels back. SO in the meantime let me say FU samy, shame on you.
I will be pissed if the tab 2 is not 7 inches. Lame.

Im glad its going to be 10inch, makes me feel better for having a 7inch tab
Seems to be a lot of misunderstanding in this thread
Samsung always said there would be a 7" AND a 10" form factor... They are just rolling out the 10" with the latest hardware and Software (HC). Nothing surprising here. I ma not sure you can call that a GT2... It's just the 10" GT
Hopefully down the road they will update the 7" as well. nd I think it's a good thing they don't do it immediately !! I'd be pissed if my GT is immediately outdated...
I'm taking my Tab back and waiting out the release of the Xoom and Tab 2. I think right now was the wrong time to buy.
I for one do not think I am going to buy a new Galaxy Tab just for a few extra inches. I mean come on samsung it is the same galaxy tab just a small bit bigger...and also weren't they the ones that first made a speech about how 7" tablets are more protable then 10"....
And on that note, If for some reason Honeycomb didn't get put on my 7" I would prob buy another tablet...but not this one.

What Android tablet are you getting and why?

So I told myself, "Self what I really want for this Christmas is an Android tablet".
Now I would like to know which Android tablet you people are planning to get by Christmas. I know tablets are gonna be the top thing to get then so I could see competition stepping up. I'm gonna want a wifi only one with the option to tether my Vibrant to it (yes Im planning to still have at least one of my Vibrants by then). I know the Ipad2 and the HP pad seem a lil ahead of the game compared to the Android tablets but I'm sticking to Android cuz I want to have the freedom to customize it like I did this Vibrant. Do not reply if your NOT getting an Android tablet please.
So which Android tablet are you getting and why?

Funny you ask, I've only ordered mine (a first for me and a new one too) from Ebay just a couple days before. Aaaaaand it's a ViewSonic G tablet.
Why you ask? Well for 3 main reasons; The 10.1 inch screen, the Unmatched Dev community it flashes (only 2nd to the 7" Galaxy tab) and the great price....Im getting this for as low as 250$ with a 16gb sd and a screen protector. Couldnt have asked for a better really.
Oh and did I mention the rush of a flashmania circling through my system since I received shipping details, CRAAAAZY
If I get one it's probably going to be the asus eepad or the acer iconia, just because they're the cheapest 10" honeycomb tablets. I'm still hoping for touchpads to come back in stock though........
I'm waiting to see what comes with Ice cream sandwich and how it changes things.

Outside of watching video on Netflix in bed because I don't want to move my XB360 into the bedroom, I don't see a reason to even look at a tablet, TBH. They're overhyped devices that don't offer much more than Smartphones in a more restrictive form-factor. That's the only reason I'm thinking about it, and that's why the crappy 1st gen Samsung Tab would be more than good enough for me.

[q] wanna buy new tab

hey guys
planing to buy new acer iconia a500 tab
but i have couple of questions before buying it
as samsung tab 10.1 : does it lags too much?
and how is the touch interface as compared to ipad2 ??
It not lags too much. All tegra 2. but i suggest you to buy galaxy tab 10.1. It feels so good and the screen is much better than a500. At last, if u have enough money to buy an iPad,don't buy android tablet. There are too many problems with it. Due to my poor English, it's just a suggestion. Maybe my explanation is not clear.

No, your explanation is VERY clear. You just haven't a clue what you're talking about
if you want to be sure, i think the best is to go to a store and try the different tablets you may be interested in (iconia, galaxy, ipad).
everyone has its own tastes and its only a few models for you to try (3).
all i can say is that it's worth its price (a little less than 350 euros in France for example) and that when (if?) ICS is ported to iconia (with hardware acceleration of course) it will be smoother than it is now
WAIT FOR TEGEA 3.WAIT FOR TEGRA.
Did I mention if you wait a month or two tetra 3 will be hitting stores. This will drop prices on tetra 2 devices.and offer a even better android experience if you are willing to spend the cash.
Goodluck and .wait wait wait.

The Iconia is excellent. Mine doesn't lag at all, even on stock it didn't. Also the touch interface is just as good as the IPad2.

The currently available Samsung tablet is like the ipad.It will break looking at it to hard.
So in sure they both will fallowhe same suit on the new coming out tabs.Idont like having the glass go to total outer redge one tiny drop or bangnd its broken.acer has more protection and feels stronger in your hand.the saw goes for comparison on computer laptops made from both companies.

i bet in less than a month, when you think about this thread, you will say yourself you paid the right price for a "flying tablet"
will the Gateway TAB TP a60 run ICS, as gateway is a subsidiary (sorta) of acer?... I just bought one for a decent price but it might go back to the store...my sister is looking for something to take notes at school and to do basic tasks on, either she will use this or the blackberry playbook (with an android app loader handrite notes program...if it works)
it is an awesome tab
seriously honey comb is a whole new GENERATION of android
also is ICS is coming then its more than awesome

+1 on that.. this is still the best tablet in my opinion. I even bough the thinkpad tablet with the active digitizer and returned it to stick with my iconia.
After enjoying my Nook Color with CM7 for about 8-10 months, I decided I needed a fully functional tablet. After striking out at Staples this morning, I found a refurb with a case on Best Buy's website for $270. Can't wait to get Thor's ROM up and running on this bad boy once I get it on Wednesday.

Galaxy Tab 10.1 Successor spotted in Pre-WMC Ad

Just though i'd let you all know the galaxy tab successor was just spotted in a pre-wmc add, looks like its 4.0 and a stylus built in! Can't wait to see this develop!
(Can't post link because of stupid XDA rules, but its on slashgear)
Cheers

Kinda meh, really. I'll bet the iPad 3 will be shinier.
Now, Samsung. Update my 7.7 to ICS and I will love you again.

Thats the samsung galaxy tab 2, which has apparently the same specs as our galaxy tab 10.1 (if not lower). Wait for the galaxy note 10.1 for much higher specs, hi res screen etc
Hopefully this will make for an easy port to our device!
I really dont expect samsung to give our tabs ICS soon especially since this newer version has the similar hardware to the original tab 10.1.
I feel like samsung would not want to release ICS for our tabs so they can sell more of the newer version, but maybe I am just a pessimist.

I just dont understand why cant Samsung just update our tab 10.1 to ICS and then lower the price and sell it as low end model. Then release note 10.1 as a successor with higher specs.
99% of us are not going to upgrade to tab 2 anyways. So whats the incentive for releasing a new model with exactly same specs, but with ICS ?

I hope the real 10.1² has a high res display... 1080p please!
Although I would also take the front facing speakers on the next go around.
Then I can grandfather my 10.1 to my girl who doesn't care about such things.

Well it seems like it will have the front facing speakers. I find them ugly though. Ill hope the side speakers come to Canada as they don't have to work around any Apple lawsuits here.

Agree them front speakers look UGLY...
Somehow, in spite of having the same specs, it's gotten thicker (9.7mm vs 8.6mm) and heavier (588g vs. 565g). It also now supports Glonass for GPS and has a MicroSD slot. I wonder if the added bulk is due to moving to a cheaper to build design.
I'm sure all the lawsuits Samsung has been dealing with brought all this about... Also they have to support this tab for 18months per Google rules so we WILL see ICS

Premium 7.7 tabs choices

Hi guys,
Trying to get a tab for my upcoming early September b/d but as much as I hate to admit, I get a feeling that I might be better off waiting a few months. I *love* everything I've read on Galaxy Tab 7.7 16gb wifi only so far and would go for one but... I'm guessing it's at the end of its life cycle and there may or may not be another 7.7 v2.0, due to Google stepping into the 7" tabs field. Not to mention that I'm having a hard time finding a reputable Galaxy Tab 7.7 US reseller.
There is also Toshiba Excite 7.7 16gb, which I can get at a discount for under $400. I understand that Toshiba has a locked bootloader and lacks in popularity in general and devs interest as a result. There is also Nexus 7 but build quality issues are major turn off.
So, any thoughts on what's coming/available in the 7" or under 8" tabs field that would fit the bill? Is Galaxy Tab 7.7 wifi only still a good choice or would you wait for a successor at this point?
Thanks in advance.

If you can wait for IFA, but I would think any new tabs from samsung in this size might debut at CES in january.
If you can wait few more month why not? Actually i'm waiting for Microsoft Surface RT, you can always find better offer in the future ffor gadgets like that.

It's not like I *need* it , it's just I was hoping to have one in time for my b/d. Hate going for my wife's iPad 2 every time I need to quickly look something up.
Looks like Galaxy Tab 7.7 was announced on September 1st of last year at IFA. So, I guess there is a good chance they might do it again this year too. I think I might just have to wait til September to see what will be announced. And even so, it won't mean the immediate availability either. So lacking any other serious and available contenders, and seeing that Toshiba Excite 7.7 sale's over, I think I'm gonna get a 16Gb Nexus 7 in the mean time, hoping I luck out and don't get a defective unit. When and if the new premium devices are announced I'll just sell Nexus 7 and get something else, Galaxy Tab 2 7.7 hopefully. Don't see anything comparable that jumps at me at the moment tbhwy. There is also 7" Huawei which is rather meh.
As far as Windows 8 goes,... nah, I just don't care for the new tile UI. So, I'm gonna pass on Windows 8 tablet. OOT, being a Windows developer but I'm not even sure I'd like to give desktop Windows 8 upgrade a try w/o a start button and all. Just my .02.

There are more reasons for getting a Windows 8 tablet if you buy for your b/d, and you should even get the Surface 8 Pro rather than RT for running native Intel applications. I'm not a pro-MS but when they do something good we should attend to it, like kinect.
Regarding the UI, what else can they do when Apple patented round rectangular? :crying: Joking aside, have you gone to a Nokia shop and try out that edgy UI in Lumia? It is surprisingly intuitive and maneuverable. Of course, if you are looking for devices that run Android apps, you may forget to take Surface into consideration :fingers-crossed:

I don't actually have a kinect add-on for my Xbox. Sorry, but I just can't stand Win8 tiles interface. :silly: I know MS had to come up with something different but it's just not for me. Being a PC guy I know I'm gonna be forced to use it down the road but I think I'm gonna stick to Win7 for now. If anything, I'm more interested in Android development and tablets in particular. Just wish I had more free time. Need a tablet for that too.
