How to move applications to SD Card by default - Galaxy Ace S5830 Android Development

For all those who wanted to transfer all their applications into the SD cards by default on their Android 2.2 Froyo operating system, we will check out the same on how you can do it. Many users recently reported that they were unable to transfer the applications to the SD card despite making use of the tool called Apps2SD which is one of the popular applications to transfer all the applications to the SD Card but it has failed to deliver for some of those who have HTC Desire and many handsets it doesn’t support. Though there are many ways for increasing the memory space marginally if you want which can be done by clearing the cache memory from the “Managing Applications” option from any Android phone.
But the real memory increaser is the only one if you manage to store all the apps in your SD Card, so let’s check out the same on how you can push your all applications which are stored in the phone to the SD card of your phone effortlessly. Considering the fact that most of the Android handsets now run on a minimum of Froyo 2.2 version, many apps don’t provide functionality to directly store the same on the device’s SD card until and unless Application requests you to select the same. So, we will check out on by default how you can transfer all the apps directly to your SD Card.
Procedure to store applications in SD Card:
First and foremost, from your phone you will have to ensure that the USB Debugging is ticked which can be done by going to the Settings > Applications >Development > then tick both Allow mock locations as well as the USB Debugging options over there.
After this you will have to download and install the Android Software Developer Kit (SDK) on your computer and after that once you download it, you will have to extract the package to the folder and then from that folder just run the application which is named as “SDK Setup.exe” and then simply click on the install selected option which is just located on the right bottom of the screen and follow the on screen instructions.
Now, connect the phone with the computer with the help of USB cable after which the OS will prompt you to install the set of required drivers which are missing which you can install from the path android-sdk/usb_driver folder, please note that you should not mount your device as you will have to plug in the cable.
Next up, you will have to run the Command Prompt and then you will have to go to the path Android-SDK/tools folder. Please note that, in Windows operating system , the Command prompt can be started by either pressing Win + R from your keyboard or alternatively you can click on “Start” tab from the main home screen and then can choose “Run” option and enter in the string as “cmd” followed by enter to enter into the command prompt. After entering in the command prompt, you will have to type in as “CD android-sdk” to get into the file via command prompt.
Now, in the android-SDK/tools folder, just type in the command as “adb devices” after which you will be getting the serial number which will be starting with the “H”. After this you will have to enter the command as adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2.
That’s it there you go, you have now successfully configured your Android phone successfully to store all the applications into the SD card. But please note that all the applications installed on the memory card will also be unavailable to the system each time you mount your phone as a disk drive and also the application performance is always better when stored in the phone as it can render quickly and also can run better in the background. So, unless and until the memory of internal SD card is not full, it’s not recommended to go for this method as this may partially slightly slow down your phone.
So, all the core applications which you use more often should be stored in the internal memory and the ones which are less used should be placed in the memory card. Do let us know if you face any issues while configuring all the above commands. Just in case if at any point of time you are unable to configure or encounters with some sorts of issue then you will have to again follow the procedure from the start.

Or..other way is..use titanium backup to move apps from internal to SD..easy..
Sent from my GT-S5830 using XDA App

Thanks for the write up.. I was able to move a bunch of my apps to the SD card freeing up some much needed space.

Copy files from PC to SDcard, HD2 with Android on SD card

When I connect my phone via USB to the PC, and copy some files in the SD card, I get to see them after a reboot... I suppose the actual SDcard and a is a simulation , and everything is inside the data.img file... probably... So file appear when there is a reboot and the img files is updated?
Is that so??
Is this usual behaviour, or a build-specific bug?
Is there a way to copy files to the USB card and see them without the need of reboot?
What will happen , if I split the SDcard to to partititons, any way to make the non-bootable one mount automatically...
i suppose part of what you're saying is true, at least i've experienced some of the problems you describe some of the time.
sometimes i would unmount/mount the card after completing the usb disk transfer session...sometimes i would have to connect it back to my desktop in usb disk transfer mode and run a file system check.
a combination of the above mentioned ALWAYS got things going for me...never had to reboot to see the new data. but i have sometimes had to reboot to see ANY data. this is because, occasionally, i have seen that the sd card sometimes just doesn't WANT to mount. but i see a BLANK /mnt/sdcard folder and unmount/mount doesn't get it going.
the reason i've mentioned the practice of disk-checking your android usb disk transfer is because you sometimes may notice "sd card could not be mounted due to errors", or "sd card mounted read only" and i have always found disk errors when i ran the disk check following these messages, and this subsequently leads to the card mounting correctly and fully usable after the disk transfer session.
so my process is:
0. start the usb disk transfer mode
1. read what i have to from the card
2. write what i need to into the card
3. disk check!
4. stop usb disk transfer mode
5. let android complete its remount and look out for errors in android's notification area.
6. if errors found, be prepared to return to step 2. see next steps for clarity.
5. connect the cable again and see if the data i wrote is still there using my desktop's file explorer.
6. if 5 is true, done, disconnect the drive and usb cable.
7. if 5 is false, disk check and repeat from 2.
my theory is: the reason why you see them on the next reboot is because android seems to force stronger and sturdier disk checks on reboot. this often brings back files that should have stayed there in the first place when you copied them to the card. however, i've found such files "recovered" by the android repair utility are often corrupted. i find microsoft's disk check on the desktop much more reliable. it seems to just nuke bad files and/or rename and move them to the "FOLDER.000" style folders in the root of the disk being checked. so this clearly tells you that your last mass-write operation to the card failed and needs to be re-done. step 2 it is! OR reboot and rely on android's reboot initiated disk check and risk carrying corrupted forms of files you just copied and thought were safe to carry!
how can I do the disk-checking?
Method 1
on your windows desktop, with the device connected in usb disk transfer mode, open my computer:
1. right click the usb drive and choose "Properties"
2. go to the "Tools" tab
3. press the "Check now" button
4. enable "Automatically fix file system errors"
5. disabled "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors"
6. press button called "Start"!
view the summary and its log when the operation completes to see what problems were corrected.
Method 2
on your windows desktop, with the device connected in usb disk transfer mode, press "Windows"+R on your desktop:
1. type "cmd" (without the quotes!) and press enter
2. a "black" window will appear
3. type "chkdsk <DriveLetter>: /f" without the quotes!
4. replace "<DriveLetter>:" with your actual usb drive's letter followed by a colon, (e.g. "f:")
5. press enter
view the summary and its log when the operation completes to see what problems were corrected.

[Q] apps2sd

Now that we have to option to install apps to our sd card I have a couple questions.
1) Where are the apps stored? I tried finding them in root explorer on my sd card after i moved them but i could not.
2) When i get my 32gb card is there any special process i have to undergo now that I have moved apps to my sd card? As in should i move them all back to my phone before switching cards or if copy my entire card over to my new one will they be included?
I believe the apps are encrypted on the sd card.
install terminal, run terminal,
in terminal run "mount" (assuming this works even if not rooted)
see things like
/dev/block/dm-6 /mnt/asec/com.adobe.reader-1 ....
this implies the device mapper subsystem is in use. don't have any more info at this time.
within the /mnt/asec/*/ directory there is a file pkg.apk, though it doesn't seem like a traditional apk as not unzippable (or at least unzip -l pkg.apk seems to fail within terminal)

And please report back if it doesn't work, because I need to make sure an easy and understandable guide for beginner.
Problems during installation and questions
Here are some problems that i experienced during my installation:
- I would rather put this link: w3.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download - because on this link you can download ISO image directly and on link that you put: w3.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer, installation is started directly from Internet (this is only my suggestion)
- You didn't mention anywhere that Ubuntu needs to be installed on Primary partition (logical , but when following steps people forget that)!
- Because i use PPPOE connection there were no explanation how to create connection on Ubuntu, and how to connect on Internet using that connection!
- How to unmount on Linux?
Question:
- I have set to my partition around 1,5GB, and why when i use camera android report to me that i don't have SD card (i don't have really installed SD CARD but there is about 1GB of free space left on this partition)?
- Can android programs be installed from windows or Linux (like *.cab on Windows) or just using Android Market?
- Is there possibility to put some necessary programs in this bundle installation like Call Light?
Best regards,
Almir M.

Hey man look, this is my solution which is working for me, and you can follow your own method if you choose not to follow mine. So here are the main points regarding to your question.
1. The link to the Ubuntu website is to let the users know what they are supposed to download and what content there are downloading, but not just merely give them a download link without reading the instructions.
2. Am I supposed to cover in this tutorial how to turn on and off Ubuntu as well? The reason why I requires you guys to do all the download stuff first in Windows is to saves all the trouble of re-create a new connection in Ubuntu, you doesn't really need a connection though while on Ubuntu. For me, I'm running on Wi-fi, therefore my Internet connection on Ubuntu works as well.
3. I thought a screenshot was provided on the instructions on Unmounting the storage. By the way, to mount and unmount the drive, once you plugged in the storage, it will appears in the top toolbar, and right click and Unmount/Mount the drive.
4. You don't really have a SD card inserted, that's why the camera ain't working. Some apps requires to have a SD card on your phone anyway to function.
5. No, I don't think it can be install through .cab or .apk.
6. Is it really that troublesome for you to go to Market and download that app yourself? Another suggestion for you is to backup all your apps before you go for fresh installation next time.
I have a problem. When I connect my phone to my computer, the folder "My Memory" (my store) and disappears when I disconnect it, it reappears.
I formatted my memory to 2GB with EASEUS Partition in primary partition and FAT 32. Am I doing something wrong? I can not transfer the file bundle Froyo since I do not see the folder "My memory (my store). Can you help me? Thanks in advance.
it's good, I reconnected my phone through the file and activ'synch My memory is returned. I'll be able to continue installing Froyo.
I followed your tutorial and Android starts ok, but I can't access My Storage partition and SD card. I now have two partitions labeled My Storage and Android. SD card is shown as not mounted (My Storage and SD card are ok, I can see them from WM). What can I do?
Thank you.
Edit: I reinstalled and now My Storage partition is available under storage folder. But I still can't see my sd card. As I understand it should be found in sdcard folder. It's empty. Probably that's because (as I already said) I see sd card notification that it is damaged and can't be mounted (if I install iso installation it is working ok).
How can I bring sd card to life?

May I know which package did you downloaded from Froyo bundle? For me, both SD card and My Storage are readable and able to be detected after installing Froyo bundle V1 and V2 updates.
And did you format your SD card using SD Formatter? Check the option below:
Format Type: Full (Erase)
Format Size Adjustment: ON
No need to reinstall the whole thing again, just take out your SD card and format it using SD Formatter. My Storage seems working fine in your case, it's just the SD card problem I guess, should be working after format it.
I reformatted the card and now it works. Thanks.
Strange is that I tried both v1 and v2 bundles and after I installed v2 again My Storage mounted correctly. God knows what happened.
And if there was really a card error, why sd card worked in iso installation?
Anyway, important is that now everything works.
Thank you very much for this guide, it really worked for me and it really improves the performance over the SD instalations.
I only have problems with the ubuntu thing because it didn't recognize my wifi card and the cable network didn't work neither... Also I think the Gpart is not the complete name of the software and makes difficult to find it on the repositories (I can't install it through the apt-get command because it didn't find such application.
I can't see My Storage in Ubuntu
Hi,
I followed the steps of the installation but when I connect my phone to the USB port in Ubuntu I don't see "My Storage" in Places as you describe. Instead something strange happens and I see a new network device ETH1 called Omnia I8000.
One thing I am not doing exactly as in the instructions is the Ubuntu installation. I don't want to install another OS on my machine. Instead I tried Virtual Machine with Ubuntu and a live CD Ubuntu and had the same effect in both.
I an a n00b in Linux so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Buzzy

As far as I'm concern, the video tutorial by jerrytech2468.blogspot.com also uses vmware to run virtual Ubuntu, try follow his video installation.
Thanks for helping
Hi l3ong91,
Thanks for giving me that link to the video tutorial.
From the video I realized you are missing a step in the tutorial.
Please add (before connecting to Ubuntu):
In the phone go to Settings->General Settings->USB Connection and set to Mass Storage + My Storage
Thanks Again,

Hi I3ong91 and thanks for your work.
I didn't understand a thing:
In your Howto, in the end, Froyo will be installed on the internal storage "My Storage" or in the external SD card?
We need to create a partition in ext4 on internal SD? or on external SD? the both?
On the screenshots you show, we can see "sda" and "sdb".
sdb (1.9Gb) seems to be the internal SD and sda (more than 9Gb) seems to be external SD...
So I think the work has to be made on internal SD.
But when we launch haret.exe for the 1st time, will the external SD be erased?
Then you're talking about leaving around 1-2gb for free space following. But on the internal SD only has 1.9Gb ...
Sorry if I doesn't undertand anything at all but I like to know exactly what i'm doing.
Can you quickly explain what memory in used and when please?
Thanks a lot!

First of all pardon me if the guide and screenshot does mislead and confused you.
1. This installation can be installed on either SD or My Storage, but in my tutorial it was My Storage installation, split My storage partition into 2, and everything in Android beta will be installed on My Storage. (No need to partition both SD card and My Storage, only create partition on the drive which you want to install Android)
2. The partition really depends on where you want to install the beta, for me, I highly suggest My Storage as it runs better and less problem.
3. According to that screenshot, (It wasn't screenshots from Omnia II 8GB, it was Omnia II 2GB, that's why it shows only 1.9GB in the partition size)
dev/sda was actually the Windows partition on your computer; dev/sdb was the Omnia 2 original partition, 1.9GB.
4. For this manual installation method, there's only ONE time needed to run haret.exe for first boot (Unlike normal installation, where TWO times are required). The content on SD and My Storage will not be affected.
5. It's best to leave 1-2GB partition for Android partition. That screenshot was taken from Jerrytech2468.blogspot.com, his Omnia 2 only has 2GB internal memory.
By the way, may I know how much memory you have on your My Storage? 2GB? 8GB? 16GB?
If you are running on 8GB or 16GB, it doesnn't really affect you, just follow the guide will do, and those screenshot was purely for reference on how to create and access the partition.

[Guide] How to activate istallation of all apps to SD-card.

The information to this guide was taken from www.swedroid.se
Works for Anrodid 2.2-2.2+ with/without root
This guide will NOT move allready installed apps to SD-card
You will need to make a factory reset if you want to install allready installd apps to SD-card (if you choose to factory reset execute the commando that will activate the function before doing ANY settings)
This lets you install apps to your SD-card even if they are not "supported"
Preparation:
To make this work you need Android SDK installed (if your are on Windows or Mac) with the Platform-Tools added
Make sure you have USB debugging mode activated on your handcet
Make sure the drives for your device install correctly when you plug it in by USB
Don't make a choice if you're asked to mount SD. If the SD card mounts automatically because that's your default then change it so it doesn't mount.
How to activate:
Navigate to platform-tools in cmd (I use windows)
controll if your device is conected and recognized by typing: adb devices
If it's found proceed with: adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
To unactivate:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 0
Notice:
Programs on the SD-card start later then the ones on the internal storage. Launchers, widgets and live wallpapers are preferably stort on the internal storage. You can switch them back by entering settings on your device and transfer them back from SD the same way you would had transfered them to SD-card.
So far so good, just one correction:
It's not up to your personal preference to store widgets / apps including a widget on the SD card or internal storage. Widgets simply won't work if stored on the SD card by android native techniques.

Fryo I800 installation help!

Ok So I am here because I've posted in other places in these forums with no replies yet, So it would be better to create a thread specific to my problem.
I have an Omnia 2, thinking of acquiring the Fryo 2.2 OS, not specific about wether I want what version but here are the problems I come across before being able to install it.
1- plugging in my phone under Settings -> My storage will not show my storage on my computer, having the external SD option will show my 16GB SD card.
2- Backing up. How do I back up my storage if I can't see it on my computer? When I turn on active sync a blank storage appears other than my SD card (assuming its the internal storage) but the size seems rather small (167MB). I've been reading peoples' posts and I'm supposed to have around 2GB I believe, and either way the files I'm trying to put inside for the android OS don't seem to fit there.
3- Partitions? How can I set those up for both the internal and external storage? Is there a program or feature to do so? My SD card under properties says FAT-32 so I'm not sure on how to do it IF I need to.
4- Using a W7 computer, so that knocks off any ubuntu installations, and also link is broken for Almars Beta 1 file that I was thinking of using for an SD installation.
Any help would be appreciated, I've had this phone since 2009 and I'm really hoping I can come across some help to make it work since I do want to keep this phone for a bit longer before I spend more money on a different cellphone!
Thank you!
Try out the new CyanogenMod from the link below.
http://windows.modaco.com/topic/346446-cyanogenmod-beta1-omnia-2-updated-02122011/
It has the SD Card auto installer, try it..
Back up data on your SD card first and then format your SD card within the phone and then use auto installer to install it.
As you said your computer wont detect the My Storage, try the steps below..
Transfer your data from My Storage to external SD Card, then connect your phone to computer using My Storage mode in settings.
Download Mini Tool partition wizard and format your My Storage (Mini tool partition will be able to see your My Storage even though your computer doesn't).
After format, your computer should be able to detect My Storage.
Now copy the downloaded android files to My Storage and run the auto installer as instructed in the ReadMe file inside the download package.
PS: Don't forget to backup the data on SD Card to your computer
Hope this helps
Ok so what you meant by taking things from my storage is going to file explorer and basically copying everything from the "my device" to the SD card?
Just want to make sure because if it doesent work then I haven't gotten anything backed up right.
Went to file explorer -> copied everything in the top folder which is application date, connMgr, doc and setttings, program files etc. is this all thats needed basically?
Thanks
P.S some of the things I tried taking like global.txt or exe couldn't be copied because of violations or some weird error, is it alright not to have those?
Update: My storage is still not revealed by the mini tool partition program, went under usb settings -> my storage and refreshed disk information, nothing shows up ugh it might be impossible for me to do this after all....
nobody can help me in regards to this? well then I guess a new cellphone is in order
grrrrr I should've gone with a iphone 3G or BB 9700 at the time instead...

Thanks

I guess you will have to reflash the ROM again since your problem seems to be unsolvable. My suggestions is to flash a stock 6.5.3 ROM before you transfer the auto SD installer.
