Well, I think at least, you should not purely restore the nandroid backup as it will flash the kernel without running itsmagic.
For the other part, better let other gurus to answer

Thats my concern. ill just wait, not like its 100% needed now but i just wanted to know a way out of my situation, if there is one!

I think if you flash one of the full packages you should be fine since it contains everything needed to take the tablet back to stock.

I'm making the "fallback" stock rom now. As update.zip for ClockWorkMod.. that should make life easier for a few...
I post it when its working.

Will this stock rom also contain the stock recovery image or will that have to be flashed seperately with running itsmagic?

oh this sounds great...
so fallback to (maybe) a fallback backup of your old firmware or (more likely) fallback to a specific firmware ?

Any brave volunteers?

I have built a Froyo ROM from source. I got the Captivate vendor files from Krylon360 over at Cyanogen, updated them, and built a ROM. I was able to get the leaked Froyo Captivate system.img and extract it so I could get the files required for our device. The ROM build cleanly and I was able to restore it to my device but since I have an Eclair kernel it will not boot. I actually read later in a forum that an Eclair kernel won't boot a Froyo system.
Anyway, I am looking for anyone who has a Captivate with the leaked Froyo build installed to try and restore my ROM. It will not brick your phone, I promise. I took a Nandroid backup before restoring and when I saw why it wasn't booting in logcat I booted into recovery and restored my last backup.
I just want to see if this guy will boot properly with a Froyo kernel and also see if I have all the device drivers working, etc.
Thanks!
Just replied to your other post Let's do this!
Sounds pretty awesome, but why didn't you just flash a Froyo kernel on your phone? Upload it and post up a link so we can see what you have.

He's not running windows and therefore can't use ODIN to swap kernels.
I was planning on flashing to Cog beta 8 today anyway.... I can give it a try.
Flashing requires Odin which requires Windows which I do not have.
I will post a dropbox link in a few minutes.
I built without kernel so if the ramdisk.img gives you grief, exclude it from the backup and also remove it from nandroid.md5.
In fact you should only need to restore system.img.
Just saw the above post...I'll be anxiously awaiting the link.
Thanks, guys. Remember, I am doing this for ALL OF US.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6995251/full_captivate.tgz
Like I said, you should only need system.img. So basically, edit nandroid.md5 and strip out the checksums for the other two files. Then copy nandroid.md5 and system.img to your recovery directory. Mine is /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.
Report back what you find.
If you have the sdk installed, please use adb logcat to get me any details. I am working with a couple of guys who work on both Cyanogen and Cognition to hash the details out. Like I said, I got all the hardware-specific files dialed in so we should be okay.
downloading now and will give it a shot..i have a test captivate so I dont mind bricking it.

Thanks. I wanted to go the AOSP route because I think what happens is.. People are modding the factory carrier images but you don't always know what's in there and can end up with crap you don't need. Plus, this is the latest 2.2.1 from AOSP.

You can swap kernels using redbend if you have 2e recovery (which he should considering that he is on Eclair). You can also flash using the open source alternative to Odin that is available here.
Any screenshots?
What are the specs of this Rom? Is it completely AOSP?

Heimdall is it's name. I can attest for it's stability. I've used it quite a few times on Archlinux when I didn't feel like booting into Windows. One note is you always need to give it a PIT file.
you want this loaded thru ODIN?
I'm getting MD5 mismatch... looking into it.

Need Help Please

First off I'm pretty new to this. I followed the instructions flashing my stock DI18 to DK28. It works just fine no problems. I want to be able to flash back to DI18. How do I do this. Without using Odin. Is there a way just to download a DI18.zip and install it into the root of my sd card power, volume down and camera button flash it? Someone please help.
Thanks
Tom
Here go Here next time search for stock d118 in the development section the wiki helps alot too.
Flash in clockwork if you have it or rename update.zip

I think if you just rename the zip file to update.zip and put it into the root of your sd card you should be able to flash not rooted in stock recovery.

I know how that is this forum gets huge of stuff epecially with people posting questions kinda like yours in a new thread, kinda hard to search i just search for the wiki and read that for different stock flashables.
I keep getting a signature not verified error or something along those lines

I have the file, yes, but I am in one of my courses and do not have my cable with me to test this. I'll be home in a few hours and I'll update with whether or not it worked. I really like the update but I just cannot stand the rotation issue. It is constantly switching orientations on me and it is near impossible to get it righted again.

[Q] An update.zip to go from DK28 to DI18?

(sorry if this has been covered in other threads, I searched and couldn't find it)
I found it on androidforums listed as a modified update.zip to bring DK28 phones back to DI18, but I'm not sure what it actually does. It's only 5mb, not ~100mb like the DK28 update.zip
Does anyone have an experience with it?

The only DI18 update.zip file is for going from DI07 -> DI18 (hence why it is only 5mb)

I believe the first link on there, you can attempt to try renaming it update.zip. Im not sure if it works without clockwork tho.. Give it a shot the worst thing that can happen is it will say aborted and wont mess up anything.
I'll give it a shot. Does it completely wipe the phone like Odin, or just change the firmware?

I think it just changes the firmware, i dont think it wipes anything, ive been flashing around roms on 2.1 and flash back to stock a lot and i never lose my data even when i wipe it..
Alternatively, is there a way to get Clockworkmod Recovery onto my DK28 phone?

besides the one click root, with clockwork, i dont think so, besides the long adb commands, which i dont know where that post is at but thats a lot of work.... But if you put clockwork on you can take it off with a simple flash of the samsung recovery zip also in the link above.
Thanks for the info.
Why is it so much more complicated to roll back than it is to go forward to a new version?

Well, not really complicated, just a few things you have flash to remove all the rooted stuff, if you use odin its still a lot of steps and more risky of bricking, i constantly see, new threads of people using odin by not following all the instructions and bricking there devices.
That's why I'm really hoping I can avoid having to use Odin to go to DI18 to get the official OTA update next week.

Dude, just look for the stock DI18 rom, rename it to update.zip, boot into recovery and flash it. That's all. I've done this several times before (although i'm now on a solid 2.2 Froyo rom).
It's a full rom, not a 5MB whatever..
It's that easy, and I don't clockwork recovery or anything?
Why does anyone bother with Odin then?
I think I have the DI18 rom, is 158,159,706 bytes the right file size?
You'll still need to odin in the di18 modem. Cwm can't flash a modem

Make a nandroid backup.
So to clarify, if I do the following ...
1) factory reset
2) unlock bootloader
3) root phone
4) make nandroid backup
I can then restore the nandroid backup at any time and phone will be completely stock, recovery, bootloader and all exactly as it is now with no sign of modding whatsoever?
I haven't had a lot of time to read into this so not sure as yet what's involved in the above steps but in a nutshell am I on the right lines? Theres a lot of confusing (and conflicting) info out there!
Thanks.

?? You can already tether on stock. Also, I haven't heard of anyone having problems just from rooting the phone, in fact, all you're really doing is unlocking the bootloader and installing an apps to give you su permissions. Like the others said, you can always nandroid back to stock and relock the bootloader if you want to.
The major things wrong with the CM7 alpha on the NS are the Camera and Wifi and other things you would consider major

I love the stock just as much as the next guy, but I didn't buy this phone to be boring. Just flashed CM7 and all is good. updates should make it even better!! Let the fun begin!!

I'm all for that sure but not until I have a simple and sure fire way of returning absolutely everything to stock, out of the box condition.
Im personally waiting for Amon_RA to release his NS recovery
and ya, the whole not having a sure fire way to go back to stock is a downer.
Google needs to release the stock ROM in its entirety
I'm sure they'll do that soon... or at least I hope they will. Only then will the fun begin for me!
Just wondering, why do you guys need a surefire way to return to stock? Just reflash stock rom and relock bootloader.

you cant reflash the stock recovery over CWM either....so when they release the stock ROM officially all you would have to do is re lock the bootloader and flash the rom and it will overwrite EVERYTHING
i was a hardcore CM user on my N1 , flashed nightlies every day but i just dont see anything in CM for the NS that would make me jump right into an alpha

Make backup of stock ROM

Hey guys,
I'm looking to throw CM7 on this atrix I just picked up but would like to have an option to return to the stock build. From the instructions I read, is it as simple as making a backup of my current stock ROM from within CWM?
Any help or direction is appreciated. Thanks.

Or you could do the same with 2.3.5.zip (and 2.3.5webtop.zip if you care). This is a rooted stock 2.3.5. Not real diff from 2.3.4 but some better AFAIAC.
One hint. Whatever you choose go ahead and get it on the sdcard. Sbricks happen and it will save you some angst if all you have to do is CWM install zip.
