Unroot for warranty replacement - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was reading the threads for unrooting the mytouch and from what I read they only work if you rooted with gfree. I rooted via root.sh and I do have a nandroid of my stock rom. Anyone know how I would go about unrooting my phone? I am receiving a warranty replacement and I am very desperate. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for responding, but the unroot method you posted is the one I talked about in the op. The very first sentence in that thread says "will only work if you rooted via gfree" (not exact words but close). Which I did not root with gfree.

doh! my bad.... well the easiest way would be to flash the stock PD15IMG.zip in the bootloader. download this file here, name it PD15IMG and put it in the root of your SD. turn off the phone then boot into hboot(hold vol down+power button), the bootloader should automatically find the file then ask you to update. hit yes and and it should start flashing. make sure you are on the stock radio before doing this

Thanks. Do I have to be on a stock rom before flashing the PD15IMG file? Or can I be running any rom and just put the file on the root of my sd card and let it install? Will it automatically put the stock rom back on?

Where can i find stock radio??? Also will this change bootloader as my loader now is CWM?
Thanks!

Figured it out. Everything is back to stock and surprisingly my phone is running smoother and faster than it has since I have been using custom roms.

@Towle- if youre on virtuous fusion with the updated radio, flash a different rom that doesnt require the radio. then revert to the stock radio, then you can go ahead and flash the stock PD15IMG in hboot. yes it will put the stock rom back on the phone and restore it back to factory conditions
@cabello80- radios can be found here
and no it will not change your hboot

Questions you're afraid to ask

So I installed the new Sense 3.0 Fusion ROM and it's awesome. I couldn't figure out how to edit the app shortcuts that appeared on the lockscreen, though, so I posted over on a different forum and the admin answered it for me. I felt dumb, however, that someone like me - and like all of us I'm sure - who consider themselves somewhat tech-savvy sometimes can't figure out the solution to seemingly easy questions. The answer, by the way, is to go into the personalize menu then choose lockscreen and hit settings -- I know it sounds dumb, and I thought I had already tried that. My point is, sometimes we're too afraid to ask questions that seem dumb so we never do. I'll do my best to answer your questions, and remember, Google and xda are your friends. Maybe you can even post fun tricks you've found and we can all help each other a little. If this is a stupid idea then I'll just let it fade off into oblivion...

I believe it originated due to a dev named KingKlick. He was notoriously called out for stealing other peoples work and naming it his, thus the CM team created the work "Kang" due to him.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's it.
Q: are there any dangers in using PD15IMG.zip?
Q2: I see people having issues where recovery won't mount system or cache partitions, which pretty much bricks their phone. Is there any indication to what causes this, and how can i avoid those issues?
I dont no of any danger flashing the PD15IMG.zip. I used it on a MT4G that I was selling (due to cheap silicone) and it put the phone to out of the box Stock. Good as New.

I used visionary 14 with Root.Rar file to acheive Perma-Root. I have also rooted using the g-free method (the semi-automated one) and have went back to stock using the PD15IMG.zip as well, with no problems.
You've used pd15img from both rooting methods? I only ask because I thought I read somewhere that pd15img can have issues with the rooting method that didn't use gfree. But if you've done it then no worries

PD15IMG.zip can be various things, I've seen it as taking you back to 100% stock and as flashing a new radio. Going back to stock with it I've read is easy enough (and I've done it once and I rooted with visionary/unlocker method), and I hear warnings all the time about just putting it on the sdcard and booting into bootloader to change the radio but it worked fine for me.
As with everything read the entire, or most of, forum before along anything you're not comfortable with.

I have used PD15IMG on a visionary root as well with no issues.
A question that I did have and felt like a goof asking it was not being able to get into my recovery by holding down volume down + power. The issue was that it would constantly load the PD15IMG when I tried this and would not allow me the option of booting into recovery because I kept that file on there anmed PD15IMG.
Once I took it off of the sd card, I was able to boot straight into recovery without issue. My workaround now, because I like to keep it on my sd card in case of emergency is simply keeping root explorer on there and it allows me to change the name of the file to whatever I want, allowing a boot into recovery by the v+p method and If I need it, I can just rename it through root explorer and it will load and put me back to stock!
And FWIW, I think this thread is a fantastic idea!

If you partition and SD card you will lose everything.
i also would advice against using ROM Manager for it. I'd use ADB if it were my phone...

If you are completely wiping when you install ROMs and don't use Titanium to restore backups I would try flashing the radio (at your own risk of course) or running the PD15IMG.zip and reverting to stock. If you aren't wiping completely do it, if you are using titanium know that it can cause errors when restoring data.
Thanks bro I'm going to try and flash the radio. I'm currently running the fusion ROM is there a particular radio u recommend or should o flash the one I'm using.

MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP ANY USEFUL INFORMATION OR APPS FROM YOUR PHONE, BECAUSE YOUR ROM IS GOING TO BE WIPED.
First download the attachment. Remove the numbers from the name of the file so that it is renamed PC36IMG and place this on the root of your SD card. Power off the phone, then boot into your bootloader by holding the volume down and power buttons at the same time. Accept the update. If everything went OK, that should get rid of that Revolutionary at the top of your bootloader and flash the phone back to S-ON.
Next remove the file from your SD card by either rebooting your phone or going into your RECOVERY. I'm not going to give all the details for this.
Next, download this file.
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VSFLE9CD
Rename it PC36IMG, place it on your SD card and follow the same steps as you did with the first PC36IMG file.
Let me know if that worked, because how to unroot the phone has seemed to be forgotten around here. Everyone is just happy to root.

That doesn't work completely for Gingerbread.
You can downgrade the ROM back to Froyo, but the S-ON tool will not work with the new bootloader, and the bootloader will not downgrade by running any of the PC36IMG Froyo files or RUUs if Revolutionary was used to turn S-OFF.
Assuming that you mean to unroot and regain S-OFF on an Evo 4G that was rooted using Revolutionary...
It seems that this has been worked out.

You need to flash an unrooted stock ROM to roll back your HBOOT to an upgradable version. I assume you used the modded 6.17 HBOOT to S-ON, but didn't flash a stock ROM to restore your HBOOT to stock?
Because the modded HBOOT is a higher version number than Revolutionary, most likely it believes you're already rooted.
I used RUU to update my phone to latest stock Rom and flashed the attachment on this thread

You essentially have two options:
- Run the RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the latest stock ROM on your PC
- Flash the latest stock ROM, in PC36IMG.zip format through FastBoot
Files for either/both of those can be found in my post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17206283&postcount=5

That's nice of you but you don't have to offer anything on return. There's plenty of us that will help you out with no needed incentives.
But to answer your question, can you still get into your bootloader? Take battery off and put it back in. Then hold down Volume Down+Power button. If so, then all isn't lost. You can try to use the stock PD15IMG.zip for the Panache to put it back to stock.

The problem here is that the op tried rooting the panache the same way they rooted theirs friends mytouch 4g. Problem with this is that the panache come with gingerbread already. So they will have to downgrade.
I figured these steps will downgrade their panache with the stock US 2.2.

To make the process very simple, try this method.
Just follow this steps for an error free downgrade.
1. Download the rom here.
2. Rename it to PD15IMG.zip
2. Place it on the root of your sd card.
3. Switch On your phone while holding the Power button & the down volume button.
4. The hboot menu will update your phone (do according to the hboot instructions).
The original bootloader is 0.86.0000
Now reboot & enjoy your update......This is the original T-mobile 2.2.1 version....so no worries.....

If you are using the Panache, you should be doing this guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16858971&postcount=98
It sounds to me like you need a gold card to downgrade your panache to the old android software. Too bad in order to make a gold card you need access to the panache to push the PD15IMG.zip into the card... You can always ask around to see if anyone in your area has a gold card for the panache u can borrow in order to fix your phone.
She is doing this guide. Actually, I've temp-rooted her phone and "updated" the MISC partition for downgrade, but she didn't have a card reader ready for making a goldcard, and the next day she already managed to reboot her phone and get stuck. So the only thing she needs is a goldcard.
The problem currently is getting CID out of this phone, I'm not sure stock bootloader shows it, and it's required for goldcard. If anyone knows Panache's CID - please share. If not - Panache RUU will be required to return to stock, but there is not a single link on the net now. So if anyone has it - please share, too.
Make a gold card for her using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157 ? If you have the panache just insert a 1 gig card into the phone and enable disc mode.
1) Format it first
2) Click MMC2 and click get CID
3) Click on the website on the lower part and paste the CID number onto the form
4) go to email download image
5) Load the image and patch it and you'll have a semi ready gold card.
6) Put the phone back in charge/debug mode and push the PD15img.zip file through and it should revert it to mytouch4g stock.
Ps. I just rooted my panache two days ago and Im successfully running VU rom.
The problem with this guide is that it doesn't explicitly say that the phone needs to be fully booted into Android and with USB debugging enabled - but it needs to be. So if the phone doesn't boot, this guide is worthless. See the method this guide is referring to for getting CID out of the phone, and you'll understand.
In any case, the problem is fixed (or actually, there was no problem), the phone is booting. Hopefully, everything will remain ok.
Yea. The last time I gtalked her she was able to boot into the device. Also she did tell me when trying to flash the stock 2.2 unrooted rom from hboot
She did mention something about CID. Hope she can figure out. I don't use adb because I can't get it to ever work on none of the pc's I use so I don't know adb yet. So I won't be able to help her in that part.

[Q] Can't unroot, "Main version is older"

I ran into the same problem as youre having when I tried to revert back to stock. flashed the stock PD15IMG in hboot, but was on an updated radio. you still have root access even tho it says s=on, but you can ONLY use the rom you were currently using when trying to go back to stock. from what I understand, youll have to flash an updated RUU to fix the issue

Thanks for the link man, I should've searched before I posted. I read through the whole thing, and I'm still not sure what to do.. just a thought, but would this basically be like trying to root from the official 2.3.4 OTA?
And if there's an RUU for the GB OTA would that work in HBOOT, since it has the updated radio?

Stock unrooted 2.3.4 GB rom

I want to return my phone to original because the speaker is dead. I am currently 2.3.4 rooted S-off with a MIUI rom. I was going to download the unrooted rom but it was on megaupload. Where can I find it now? Please excuse me if I wrote something noobish.
I found a rooted 2.3.4 stock gingerbread, but now the reverse gfree method is not working. It always freezes at the dd if=/your part7number.bin part. Does anyone know the problem. Thank you.
Did you download a file called PD15IMG. IT its the stock rom. If you have the file just drag it from your comp to your sd card. Restart the phone holding the volume button down and the power. Hboot screen should come up, press volume up and it will automatically install the stock rom, press volume up when it asks if you want to update. If you dont have the file private message me and I will send it to you via email bro

My B. I meant s-off. I tried to do the method to revert in the true perma root post, but it does not let me dd if= the part7 backup. My phone just freezes and reboots. Will they care if I have s-off?

I doubt they would even care. Better to be safe than sorry though.

I am trying to be safe, but the method on the perma root post does not work. Is there another way?
Wow. Speaker randomly fixed itself. Now to reroot. Is it any different since I already have S-off but not root.

Just run through gfree method, it's easier and less nerve wracking the second time around.
