For those of us in the US with AT&T... - Galaxy S II General

Is the US version worth waiting for? Sprint is the only one with a sort of confirmed release date for July 24th, Verizon and AT&T are still unannounced.
I'm buying this phone without contract. My question is, should I wait for the Samsung Attain (AT&T version of GS2) to come out, or should I just buy the international unlocked i9100 version? I know the US version is supposed to have NFC support, but NFC seems gimmicky and unnecessary to me honestly. Any other things I should consider about the US version?
Also, I've read all about the wifi and yellow screen tinge problem. Does anyone think the wifi connectivity could be improved with a software update, or is it a hardware issue that might be resolved in the US version? I also understand a good number of people do not suffer from the yellow tint on the side of the screen, and I might be willing to roll the hard six and hope that I don't get that problem either.
Any input on this amazing-looking phone is appreciated! I owned a Captivate and hated the lack of LED flash camera and no front-facing camera. Glad to see this one is packing some serious hardware, plus Gingerbread!

Since nothing is announced, it can come next month or it can take another 5 months. I couldn't resist and bought the international version. I would say not to wait, buy now and enjoy this awesome phone

i have a feeling that it'll be announced by at&t sometime next week. only reason why i say that is because sprint announced it...
prob won't happen...but gotta think positive.

Pros of International Version
- Updates directly from Samsung
- No AT&T crapware
- No AT&T software or hardware "enhancements"
- Ability to use unlimited dumb-phone data plan for $10-15 a month
- SIM unlocked out of the box and no carrier specific radio "tuning" (good for roaming, not at home)
Pros of AT&T Variant
- Subsidized
- Insurance
- Swaps during warranty
- "Tuned" for their network (good at home, not for roaming)
- LTE perhaps?

Thanks for your input That's what I'm suggesting. And I figure even if the US version is released sooner, is it even worth getting instead of the international version? The only thing I'm really concerned about is my wifi not working. I plan to use GTalk video chat (and yes, I read about how to make it work with 2.3.3) and I don't want to suck up my entire data plan with it. Plus, I'm in the military and I'm currently in a temporary duty station with poor cell service. Wifi is almost a must.

If you are buying off contract like you say, then hell no don't get the att version. The unlocked version is always better. Always.

Barry had a good synopsis of the pros and cons and I think Roger pretty much capped it. If your not getting a subbed phone medianet will end up making the international version cheaper over time and you can have it now. No brainer for me but then I already made this exact decision and would I suppose have to be considered biased. I can tell you one thing, this is kick ass hardware and I don't regret that decision at all.

I got the unlock version back in May and no regrets. Best phone ever.

I picked up the unlocked version to use on AT&T and I love it. I have had zero problems with WIFI. Nothing but good things to say.
By the way, how do you get on the $10-15 data plan? I'm currently in the $25 2gb plan.

I'll recap what I learned from others here. Apparently, AT&T has no way of knowing what kind of device is using their data network other than IMEI ranges of devices they sell. Therefore, the SGS2 doesn't appear to them as a smartphone.
I started a new account so I was on the dumb-phone plan from the beginning. Others suggested calling a CSR and telling them you're replacing your current smartphone with a Motorola Krzr. Ask/tell the CSR that you want to add the data plan for non-smartphones to it. It appears people have been successful doing this.
Here are the plans:
Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones - $15.00
Data Unlimited for Non-Smartphones - $10.00 (Requires Messaging Unlimited)
Messaging Unlimited - $20.00
Messaging Unlimited - $20.00 (Includes Mobile to any Mobile Unlimited Calling)
Messaging and Data Unlimited - $30.00
I went with Data Unlimited ($10.00) with Messaging Unlimited w/M2AM ($20.00). So for $30.00 I have unlimited data, messaging, and calls to people off the AT&T network. That's a great deal when you look at AT&T's a'la carte smartphone feature pricing. We can also tether for free which saves even more.

Alright. I'll certainly look into the other plans. Thanks for your reply!

thanks for the breakdown! this alone is enough to sway me to decide on shelling out the $700 (ouch!) for the international version. i was on att with a $25/mo 2gb data, but had to switch to sprint for unlimited. no i can go back.
do you think that at&t would eventually catch on? i know that the international version has an unrecognized imei, but the reason i ask is b/c the canadian nexus s' imei is in at&t's system for some reason, and ppl who pop the sim in are hit with the regular data plans.

Typically the answer is no, att database lists only phones they sell, with very rare exceptions like the nexus one. But the galaxy s2 is not known for sure if they eventually start tracking the unlocked version. We don't know, but likely not.

Sprint didn't confirm a release date of the 24th - they posted it was a mis-communication and that date is for the galaxy tab.

I believe that was Verizon. Sprint was the one where two Managers had heard whispers on July 24th and told that to someone who asked

The nexus s and some dell streaks were very rare cases of att adding there imei. Im 99.9% sure ATT will never have the international(uk) sgs2 in there imei database. If I believe ATT are changing the hardware a little(removing physical button). Theres been 100s unlokced devices thats been released and has never been added to att imei database. The sgs2 would be the first.
IVe been running unlocked devices on att for about 5 years and never had a problem. Ive givin them the imei before and they have no clue.
Now if ATT and other us companies stop the need to make there devices feel unique then we might have a problem. But that would never happen.

Thanks for the replies. Ill be ordering mine tomorrow. Any suggestions where to buy? Was looking @ popularelectronics.com where they list it @ $694 shipped. But with such a high end device, company reputation is as important as price.
Gonna miss my nexus s :-( I wish I could keep both!
Update: found a deal @ mobilecityonline for $685 shipped after coupon. Their reviews don't look as bad as other online stores that sell unlocked gsm's. Gotta review their return policy though.

I think the July 24th launch date was referring to this handset: http://androidandme.com/2011/06/news/meet-sprints-new-mid-end-android-phone-the-samsung-conquer-4g/
Obviously not an sgs2. I doubt sprint would release it on the same day or week either.

I have to agree, you shouldn't be so naive. Chances are to avoid any trouble they will honor all existing contracts, but what happens to people that are not in a contract?
What happens to those of us who are month to month? Chances are At&t will force us to switch to a new rate plan and give us a few months to do so before they cut us off completely.
Wow. Such hate for AT&T. I don't get it.
I had been a happy customer of theirs for more than 2 decades (Original AT&T Wireless -> Cingular -> AT&T). My plan from the original ATT Wireless was grandfathered in and survived two corporate takeovers. In other words, I was out of contract more than 10 years ago and they never forced me to upgrade or change.
The only reason I switched to T-Mo is the phone and price. I needed a new plan since I could NOT get data into my grandfathered plan. AT&T had really expensive pricing for data, so we switched.
I am actually looking forward to going back. AT&T service was and is really professional. (Cingular's was NOT).
Disclaimer, I do NOT work for them, and I own no AT&T stock. Just stating my own direct experience.

My wife and I have logged many hours with AT&T's support voice menus, scripts, learned the thick accents, and have many of the responses memorized. I get paid quite well by the hour and it insults me why I should pay to get the runaround by thick layers of departments for which AT&T is famous.
I was a happy Cingular customer. AT&T bought them. I left for obvious reasons. Now I'm with Tmobile. My recent experience with AT&T over Uverse (oh what could possibly go wrong...today?) is likely an indicator of what I can expect yet again. It took 6 technicians from AT&T to finally replace a cable of a wrong impedance (I may have an BSEE, but its highly counterproductive talking to scripted tech support who will punish scientific arguments.) No thanks. Can you feel the hate dripping?
The Death Star strikes again. Crushing the rebel forces one by one...
No price change until:
A) you need a new contract
B) you are not under contract
C) when you want to add a feature not included in your contract
D) ATT decides to cancel your current plan and offers you a new plan will less features for the same money.
I agree with the approve poster... there will be a GSM monopoly. GSM is a requisite for all international travelers.
Oh Ma Bell, the irony.

Maybe this is not hate but it sure is not love either. Just saying
Guys, you shouldn't worry about pricing.
1. AT&T may have paid for it, but they don't completely own it until the DOJ and FCC do what they need to do. They can still deny it.
2. AT&T wouldn't be dumb enough to piss off current T-Mobile customers to the point where they cancel their contracts, I mean they did just shell out $25 billion in cash (+ $14 billion in stocks or something) for the company, they wouldn't risk losing all of the profit right away.
Plans will be grandfathered. That's a fact. I've worked for the blue devil and they are good on that note. However how will this affect upcoming android phones? With all their sideloading app crappy. Smh. Sprint may be my last resort. I may work for them but I do loathe them..

I'm very worried about this. Granted, it may be some time before these changes actually take effect, but I for one do not currently have a contract, and that is the sole reason I switched from at&t to tmo. Now after purchasing 4 phones at full price so that I could keep my cheaper monthly rate, I'm fairly certain that at&t is going to force me to go with one of their plans. I like my unlimited data for 25 bucks a month. Will at&t do that for me? Past experience says a hearty, resounding, "no".

Not for those of us with Vibrants since they are capable of both AWS spectrums.
AT&T giving a twelve month window for the merger to take place is extremely optimistic. Maybe if the FCC and justice department was put in place by the GOP. We are probably looking at 16-18 months for approval given Ma Bell's monopoly history.

AT&T is not so much after the T-Mobile business or customers, it is more desirous of the T-Mobile AWS spectrum. See Confirmed:
AT&T wants to use T-Mobile's AWS spectrum for LTE buildout" over on Engadget. AT&T have proved over and over again they could not care less about customers. So do I think they would be foolish enough to "piss off" T-Mobile customers? Sure in fact many of the T-Mobile current customers have already been "pissed off" by AT&T and are on TMO because of that!

It does appear to be that way. I had planned on purchasing on upgrade the LG G2X and the new lg tablet but now it is up in the air. What a time for T mobile to spring this. I got away from AT&T 14 years ago(have been with T Mobile the whole time) and do not want their level of service and pricing again. I guess Verizon is about the only choice for me as I certainly do not want Sprint. I wonder if T mobile will continue to roll out some of the new phones from LG one of which is rumored to be Vanilla android, or will this just coast till the deal is completely done.

Well, you never know. From my assumption, they only purchased T-Mobile for their 4G towers, they are going to use the existing ones to boost their own 4G LTE network to most of the country (and by most, I mean like 97 percent) including rural areas. Head over to Engadget, what might happen in one year might be interesting.. I am definitely not a fan of AT&T but theoretically their plan seems solid.
Just my ideas on it. Take them as you want..
Grandfathered
I'm just wondering just how long AT&T is going to allow my the TMO unlimited calling, unlimited data, $10 HotSpot plan to stay in force? Debating on riding out existing contract and then updating to Vibrant 4G and re-up before they stick it to me....or maybe that will be too late because it'll already be under AT&Ts BS data contracts.
I was with AT&T for years until they made it clear they could care less if I stayed with them or not. They would offer you the world to switch but if you were already a customer, they wouldn't offer you squat to reup.
The only good news potentially is that TMO has notoriously bad reception in rural areas (in Texas anyway) where AT&T is much better.

DVP AT&T and medianet data plan

Can i keep the medianet data plan if i buy the phone unlocked from dell? I currently using it on my Bell Desire Z. If i buy the at&t DVP unlocked, will i be able to keep the plan? Did anyone try this?
Thanks
On my wife's DVP, I bought it subsidized from Dell for AT&T and they switched her $10 dumbphone plan she was using on her Pixi to the Smartphone plan since I had to pick the plan when buying the phone. Once AT&T switched it in their system, I called and switched the IMEI on the billing system from the DVP to a dumbphone IMEI. Then I logged into OLAM and picked the $10 unlimited family data plan again and it has been on that for a month with no issues. The OLAM system still shows the phone on her line as a SE z520a instead of the DVP, so it would seem that they do not pick up the phone type automatically on the DVP like they do with other phones.
Because of the above, I would assume that buying unlocked and using the old MediaNet plan would work without issue...

Has anyone else tried this? I too have a Bell Desire Z that I use on AT&T but this phone has had my interest ever since I saw it in the Microsoft Store last November.
There is a great sale on eBay: Unlocked 16GB brand new for $299 either version (AT&T or T-Mobile) and I'm really considering getting it if I can keep my cheap data plan...
Edit: Looks like it is this price on Dell.com, too.

I'm not sure if this answers your question but I purchased a DVP locked to T-Mobile and unlocked it through dells unlock code request email service. I have been using the phone since the beginning of April on AT&T. AT&T does not recognize my DVP's IMEI # as a smartphone number and allowed me to purchase the unlimited *EDGE* data plan for $10 a month. If you don't mind slightly longer load times for youtube videos and longer download times for apps, I would recommend it. As for reception and call quality, I can't tell the difference and I've never had issues. Not a bad deal!

UPDATE: Yesterday, AT&T sent a sms and email saying they were changing my wife's line back to the $25 plan....oh well.
Darn. I was really considering the phone, now that I know I'll be switched to the $25 data plan, I won't be getting it. $300 is a steal for it, though. The only thing I wish it had was 512MB RAM. I can't believe they skimped on such a cheap component.
The ram bug was fixed in newer firmware. It does have 512 ram. I ordered one anyway, since I don't use over 2gb anyway.

Oh I thought there physically was only 256MB in the device. I guess not. Still though, I wanted to get one to play with and see how I like WP7, but if it means I'm going to lose my $10 data plan I won't be doing that. Maybe if that new Galaxy S 2 slider comes out on AT&T next month and I'm forced to get the new data plan, I could pick one of these up, too.

Its probably an at&t (greedy bastards!) thing. I have a DVP on T-Mobile and still have my GF'ed $19.99 data plan, no trying to get me on the higher priced data plans.

did you pre order ATT Note

Just curious to see how many have pre ordered and if you are moving from an international to the ATT version.
I have not preordered, but I am interested in the ATT version due to prevalent LTE where I live. I will wait to see all of the reviews and user feedback before getting one. I will most likely keep my current GNote since it gets updates from DBT and HSPA+ and battery life are great. I have a skyrocket that I will sell if I get the LTE version.
I did see a list of the apps that will be loaded on the ATT version and it is nice to have a version without all the bloat!
What's the big deal about LTE? I live in Europe, and I just get HSPA+ so I can't comment about it, but do you guys really tether THAT much to require those kinds of speeds? :S Don't get me wrong, the faster the better, but I paid 535 euros for my unlocked device. I don't think I could shove out any more money for the same model with a different radio and minus a hardware button.
So ... do you tether THAT much? I have unlimited data and I have tethered all of 3 times and that's because ADSL was down for an hour. Lol. I'd imagine LTE on the actual phone doesn't make much of a difference while mobile browsing or emailing as they're such small packets.

I do not tether at all personally. I have a Verizon LTE myfi for my work laptop. LTE is quite prevalent hometown (Dallas- Fort Worth) and in my Homestate of Texas where most larger cites have it. I have an unlimited LTE plan and have a skyrocket. I love my International GNote and will keep this one and probably sell my skyrocket. LTE is quite fast (20-60 mbps) and if I am going to use the GNote as my full time phone, I want LTE. I video call with my children when traveling in Texas without having to rely on the hotel wifi or hooking up my work wifi. If I want to stream netflix I do it over wifi, since I do not want to hog the bandwidth.
Keep in mind this is my plan which is based on the LTE version here having stellar reviews. As far as the cost, I do not have many others hobbies since I have young kids and a wife lol! My wife is understanding of my phone & watch addictions. Besides, if she is really good, she may get my International GNote to try out!
There is a att note forum now. Go look there for all the preorders threads. There are plenty.

I have unlimited on an international Note. It is very easy to hit 2 gigs on HSDPA. With ATT sending out texts to those who use as tether as little as 2 gigs, I'm not sure if the LTE model is for me. I'd hate to lock in a contract only to have ATT breathing down my neck if I actually use LTE. Surely flying past 2 gigs would be very easy at those speeds. No thanks.

2 gigs? In DFW, I think the LTE texts start at around 5 gigs. 2 gigs would suck. That is not hard to do at all on hspa+ Seems wifi is everywhere where I live. I do agree the gigs can fly by faster on LTE. I have considered the new 5 gig plan with tethering but 50 bucks...

Oh helllllll no!!! LTE without unlimited access (and by unlimited, I mean truly unlimited; no throttling) is a joke! Forget about it! I'm not interested! Plus, supposedly I was throttled over my last billing period, and honestly, I didn't even notice it. Was still getting ~3mbit on HSPA+, which is plenty fine for most stuff anyway. Burned through about 6gigs of data last period. No tethering either.
Plus Exynos is a beast. Seriously...

Question: If you already have a VZW LTE hotspot, A) are you grandfathered into unlimited data with VZW? and B) why not just keep your international Note and use the hotspot for when you need the extra bandwidth?

Exactly what I plan to do. I have two grandfathered unlimited lines on VZW. So I'm going to do the Straighttalk $45 no contract deal and just wifi my Note from my hotspot off my RAZR. Just trying to decide if I want to buy a white Note or black Note.

Sounds like a good plan to me! I would avoid the AT&T version though, seriously. AT&T are a bunch of d!ck$ when it comes to unlocking their devices, using them in ways they didn't intend, and oh yeah, they still put Carrier IQ on their stuff AFAIK, so the AT&T Note will likely have that too. Not to mention, the discounted price only applies for a renewed 2-year agreement anyway, so you're either locked into that for another 2 years, or you're stuck with an ETF. Either way, they're gonna recoup the cost one way or another. Being that as the case, you're really just better off importing another unlocked Note and going pay-as-you-go on that $45 plan from Straight Talk

I always get a kick out of your posts! The Verizon Mifi is through a corporate account so I do not know if it is unlimited. I do plan to keep my International Note! I have a skyrocket as my primary phone (I swap SIM's every week or so) I love my GNote and figure I can sell the skyrocket and get the LTE GNote. I do not want to give up my International with all the aspects of having unlocked and updates. I also just love the LTE Network and figure I will love it more with a GNote!

Once people say this about buying unlocked "But remember, the carrier will recoup the cost of selling you a discounted device over the term of your service agreement, so you're gonna pay some way or another anyhow. " I stop reading because it makes no sense.
How does ATT recoup the cost of selling me a diiscounted device over the 2 years? I have a couple options...
A) Buy a phone for $299, and then for the next 24 months pay for my Family Plan including 550 minutes, Unlimited Text and Unlimited Data for both lines, after corporate discount, I pay roughly $135/month, or $3240 for the plan + $299 for the phone, a total of $3539
B) Buy an unlocked phone for $699, and then for the next 24 months STILL pay for my Family Plan including 550 minutes, Unlimited Text and Unlimited Data for both lines, plan totalling $3240 over the 2 years, and the phone being $699, so a total of $3939
In the end, who paid $400 MORE over the course of two years? You did. You said it yourself, especially in the US, what am I supposed to do, switch to T-Mobile and deal with a) crappy service in my area and b) different radio frequencies potentially limiting my data speeds? Goto a regional carrier with again, crappy service in my area?
When you say it's ALWAYS better to buy unlocked, you're plain wrong. As much as you don't want to hear it, you bought your 7.7 Tab from AT&T, and agreed to the Terms of User when you signed the contract, if you didn't think it was fair at the time, you shouldn't have entered the contract, simple as that. It may work out for you to buy International, but you can't make that blanket statement for everyone.

Or you can spend $50/month for unlimited everything on a pay-as-you-go plan and save yourself $2040 over the course of 2 years for one device. If your family plan has two lines on it (judging by your monthly cost), and say you bought two unlocked Note's, (So, $100/month x 24 months = $2400 + 2 Note's @ $700 each, brings you up to a total of $3800 over 2 years) you're still saving about $140, plus you're getting all the added benefits of owning an unlocked device, as described in my article. Also, this assumes you never sell your Note when you get tired of it and want to upgrade. You can further reduce the long-term cost by selling your device when you want to move on. Nearly two years after I got my old Galaxy S, I was still able to sell it for about $300 and some change.

Verizon Eliminating Unlimited Data

Hooray Verizon is successfully alienating customers once again! Long story short Q3 or Q4 Verizon is looking to require grandfathered clients to switch to tiered data. Another article even mentions they may force mid-contract customers to do the same.
Already tired of kids yelling on forums about T-Mobile or Sprint here I come

Im a unlimited plan person...grand-fathered in -_- grrrrrrrrrrrr this may make me switch to some other carrier......
They've really gotta update their $30 data offering to 4GB across the board. Up until Google Music I didn't use 2GB, but not anymore. I'm looking at my plan and it looks like they no longer offer mobile-to-mobile (M2M) texting either. It's either 1000 or unlimited messages per month. SMS on the whole costs carriers almost nothing.
For those without corporate discounts, $80 is the cheapest data plan you can get. Is that really not enough Verizon?
I am also one of these 'grand-fathered' customers and if this goes through I will most likely be switching to Sprint when my contract ends. Sad. I hope Sprint picks up the new Galaxy S in time so I can at least stay on the phone I like, although that new HTC looks like it'd be a sweet alternative.
So which will happen first...Verizon offers the Samsung Galaxy S 3, or Verizon penalizes loyal customers for upgrading?
If it's the latter, I'm jumping ship...assuming there are any carriers left who offer unlimited data.

Unless you are gonna use sense, I recommend not getting HTC. You are far better off with Samsung on developments if you get a reasonable phones.

I'd jump to T-Mobile, but they have virtually no coverage. I travel all over the southeast and need it. I've been using Verizon prepaid and it's fine, but if they get rid of the unlimited data for $30 plan I might have to look elsewhere.

I was specifically referring to the One X being released around the same time as the Galaxy S3... I just meant if the S3 isn't available by the time my contract expires it'd be my 2nd choice. If I get a really good deal though I wouldn't be completely opposed to going with an S2, but we'll see I guess. Maybe we'll get lucky and Verizon will drop this whole thing due to negative reaction.
I use less than 2GB a month and often less than 1 GB but if they are eliminating unlimited data then there's no reason for me to stay on Verizon.
As someone who's only source of real internet at home is mobile or expensive, high latency satellite. And bring a gamer that uses 6gb per month. I well be keeping my unlimited line on 3g for as long as the 2 fascinates on my plan live. F#(k you Verizon! It's not that your struggling. It's that you need to make next quarter bigger than last quarter. And you've already dodged all the taxes you could so it's squeeze time on your customers.
I will do everything possible to keep my account a least profitable one.

Yes but if they switch and change your plan before the contract is up, it would give you grounds to dump them without an early termination fee.
Unfortunately Verizon is the only one that gets service where.I live... but since I can just use the Wifi at my house (and do), who cares.
I am not on Verizon but it have the 5g cap from us cellular when they changed it and I thought it would be a big deal, but I really font download as much as I thought. I download all my rooms at home anyway because it is much faster and doesn't use up the allotted amount. I am sorry, but getting 46 down with my home service does make it easier. I too was once on the dial up or satallite on internet category so I feel for you.

It is breaking a contract and you can get out if you choose. It happens all the time, but they dont make it a big deal so people don't leave. If and when they do, they have to send you a notice with the option to opt out, legally they do.

5GB is decent. Verizon charges $50/month I think for that tier. No thanks! I mentioned text service is virtually free for providers to support. 3G & LTE are polar opposites to SMS. I do not wholly blame people who tether an ass ton without a tethering plan, but they certainly did not help.
Regardless Verizon has never really stopped being greedy I guess you could say
$50 for 5g plan does seem a but steep, but most companies are switching to a tiered plan at this point. I am paying 130/month for two phones with the 5gig plan, unlimited texts, and something like 1200 minutes. And I get a new phone every 10 months(new to me...slow us cellular).

I can only afford 2 gigs a months and it isn't enough. I try and watch my data but I always go over and have to pay an extra $10.
I have a friend with a GS2 she said she would give to me(has a nearly in noticeable crack)and my mom wants a smart phone anyway. Might just give her my fassy and go to sprint.

Unlimited 4g sounds amazing. If they take it off I'm switching to sprint. Would be the same price a month. Plus with sprint and Amazon wireless you can get gs2 or future gs3 for a penny for new customers.

[Oct. 12 2012 update] Benefits of International Samsung Galaxy S3 for US (AT&T) users

[Oct. 12 2012 update] Benefits of International Samsung Galaxy S3 for US (AT&T) users
Hello Everyone,
Most of this information is already obvious to many users out there, I just made this information available to some new users who have a few questions about why should we (in US) buy an international phone and not a US branded phone?
1. Price: International phones are less expensive.
Yes International phones are less expensive than carrier branded version (especially AT&T). Please have a look at following calculations.
1.1 Calculation for AT&T 2 Year contract plan for 3GB data usage per month.
Optimistic price of phone = $199.99 + about 7% sales tax + $18 upgrade fee= $232 approx. (EDIT: upgrade fee is $36 now)
Price of Data plan ($30 for 3GB/month) for 24 months = $30*24 = $720
Total cost with 3GB data plan for 24 months = 232+720 = $952.
1.2 Calculation for International GS3 with unlimited data
Cost of phone to me (from Expansys) = $695
Price of Data plan ($10 for unlimited/month) for 24 months = $10*24 = $240
Total cost with unlimited data plan for 24 months = 240+695= $935.
Instructions to get unlimited data is in second post.
So International version is less expensive (952-935) by $17. I know its minimal difference but it breaks the myth that international phones are costlier than AT&T's subsidized versions.
Now here is where it gets interesting. If you are sure that you are going to use this phone on AT&T for next two years then here is one more cool thing that you can do. Upgrade and buy a GS2 skyrocket from Amazon wireless (current price $39 at the time of writing this article) and get into contract for 2 years. Now, sell it off craigslist/ebay for 375-400 and make another 300-350 bucks profit on it. Pros: more profit, Cons: Contract bound2. Freedom: Unbranded international phone
With $17 profit, you get an additional freedom from any contracts. You can switch to any other provider at any time.3. Development Support: Great for International Phone
If you are on XDA, you know that you always want a huge developer support. with likes of chainfire, indie, nitroz and more to join, we know that we are covered.
Quoting the great Entropy512
"LTE is not yet mature and will continue to be a battery hog for at least a year. Everyone who says LTE is awesome seems to be completely oblivious to the fact that even HSPA+ makes it VERY easy to hit your data cap.
2GB RAM so far has little benefit - current devices are doing just fine with 1GB
International S3 development work will be 90% nonportable to the North American mangled carrier variants. If you don't believe me - look at the T989 and I727 forums and compare them to the I9100 forum. Compare the I717 forum to the GT-N7000 forum in terms of development.
This becomes especially obvious when you look at AOSP bringups. Because the international S3 is highly similar to the international S2, the CM9 bringup for that device is progressing rapidly. Meanwhile, the T989/I727/I717 CM9 bringups are still in "alpha" quality stages due to the lack of documentation on Qualcomm SoCs and the lack of commonality with international variants.
This is one of the big keys - North American carriers are highly notorious for long delays with updates. This means that you will not see updates or kernel source for your specific variant for a long time after international variants receive updates. Now, if your carrier variant is highly similar to the international device (SGH-I777 vs. GT-I9100), the international device's kernel source release may be all your need. If your carrier variant has a completely different SoC - you're SOL."
4. Lockdown bootloaders and AT&T Bloatware
AT&T phones have always suffered from this issue. AT&T makes it look like this: they subsidized the price of phone, they own it and therefore they can install apps that we don't want them to.5. Unlimited HSPA+ Data
In this section I speak for just my self and a few friends whom I know. I have stayed in cities that have LTE and also that don't have LTE. 90% of time I am close to wifi. So do I need LTE?
Lets say I am traveling for next 8-10 hours and I would really like to enjoy 'super fast high speed LTE' what do I do? Do I start watching Netflix on my phone? Do I stream HD Youtube for hours? Probably not, because I have data cap. All i would like to do is surf internet, listen to music, watch saved videos (but may be its just me)
HSPA does the job for me. I get 3500-6500 kbps down and 1500pbks upload speeds on HSPA+. It is sufficient for me to even stream videos!

Please let me know your thoughts and if you agree or disagree with me. I will update the OP with more facts if I have missed any.
So here are the steps to get non smart phone data plan for 10 bucks (if you already have unlimited messaging) or 15 bucks if you don't have unlimited messaging.
1. Before yesterday (06/06/2012) I was on 3GB $30 plan.
2. Take the simcard out of your AT&T smartphone and put it in galaxy s3 (or preferably an old AT&T dumb phone)
3. Dial *#06# on your phone and note down the IMEI number. Now, dial 611 (AT&T customer care)
4. Ask operator to switch your data plan to 'non smart phone unlimited data' as since you are not using an at&t smart phone any more.
5. Operator will ask for imei number. Now you have two choices:
5(a): Preferred choice: Get an old AT&T dumb phone and provide the IMEI number from that phone.
5(b): Risky choice: Provide IMEI number from your GS3.
I went with the 5(b) but I do think the 5(a) is a more preferred path because it doesnt make any sense to provide AT&T your IMEI number from the GS3. This way you will have less chanfes of getting your device flagged.
6. For me, she said the IMEI number is showing as an unknown phone so she will add the unlimited non smart phone data plan to it. (If she asked what kind of phone it is just say you have no idea. May be a Samsung phone.)
7. All set. Working unlimited data.
There is no cap on it. And they don't throttle us as well.
Update: As of today (08/06/2012), I am still on unlimited plan. My billing cycle restarted a few days back and I used gigs and gigs in last month

This trick works only on international phones. But it is really amazing.
Thanks for the informative post.
I was all set to get the Int. version to benefit from the unlimited cheaper data plan, etc. But with the launch fiasco I ended up cancelling and will be getting the AT&T variant.
One major factor with going with the US variant is dealing with exchanges/returns/warranty issues. The international has some great benefits but say I get my Int. S3 and have issues off the bat with whatever, the whole process of getting a new one seems like it would be a pita vs walking into an AT&T store and swapping it that day.

+1 and also with 2gb vs 1gb of ram makes this a no brainer to me. I'm not worried about the bootloader. I had the Note for a while and it was fine.

This trick works only on international phones. But it is really amazing.

I returned my HOX and moved onto this phone. So they'll still switch it? I guess maybe I should get a Square and Trade warranty too since I was paying 6 dollars a month for an ATT warranty.

If you order from a few reputed sellers line expansys or negri, they process the warranty for you. Usually these phones do not have issues though.

I'm sure there will be issues, I've seen things posted already that would have me back in a store for an exchange. From the screen inking, to some with bad batteries, etc. The unrealistic weight we put on tech these days will lead many to at least want an exchange if the littlest things come up. I dont' want to pay $700+ for a device and have to "live" with a little annoyance if I could have just exchanged it easily.
I err on the side of caution, it's better piece of mind IMO knowing I won't have to ship the phone back to the US distributor, then they ship to Samsung International, figure out what's wrong, than I pay out the a$$, then they ship back to the distributor, then the distributor ships back to me. Meanwhile the Galaxy Universe S1 would have launched .

Yes they will still switch it. I upgraded to sky rocket last Friday and got a $30 data plan on my line and sold it to make money. Once I put the sIm card in gs3 and called, they switched it to unlimited

Quick question...cant currently afford the sgs3...but would the unlimited data trick work if I put my sim in an old non smartphone Samsung called and used that imei...then after that's done put it back in my smartphone? Or would they detect the imei on smartphone after j put it back in and put me back on a smartphone plan...(I'm stuck with the $15 200mb att plan)

this is actually why i've been swayed over to buying from brick and mortar stores in the US like ATT/best buy/amazon/etc. the past 2 smartphones i imported i had issues with after the 15-day (yes, 15) exchange window and i was basically screwed. in cases like this i'd have to ship my phone off and be phone-less until the issue was fixed.
those were the first, and last, two phones i'll import for myself. guess what they were? Samsung Galaxy S-i9100 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus. the issue with them? bad displays.

Well, I dont wanna drag 2gb vs 1gb and quad core vs. Dual core here. That is being discussed in another thread. I'm assuming that both the phones will perform almost similar.

So here are the steps to get non smart phone data plan for 10 bucks (if you already have unlimited messaging) or 15 bucks if you don't have unlimited messaging is still there.
1. Before yesterday (06/06/2012) I was on 3GB $30 plan.
2. I took the simcard out of my at&t smart phone and put it in galaxy s3
3. Dialed 611
4. Asked operator to switch my data plan to 'non smart phone unlimited data' as I'm not using an at&t smart phone any more.
5. Operator asked for imei number. I provided the imei number from gs3
6. She said it's showing as an unknown phone so she will add the unlimited non smart phone data plan to it. (If she asked what kind of phone it is just say you have no idea. May be a Samsung phone.)
7. All set. Working unlimited data.
There is no cap on it. And they don't throttle us as well.

Once you put your sIm card in At&t branded smart phone network will detect it and it will pot a smart phone data plan on it.

May be I and many friends were just lucky but we have all imported and nothing bad has ever happened. However we so have warranties just in case from expansys/negri being the middlemen.

true. but you have to ship your phone off. i'd be phone-less for much longer than i would if i just bought from US instead. it's a trade-off that i personally don't want to make anymore.
Look guys, there's pros and cons to both sides. Yes you can walk into the store and get help right away assuming if you have insurance and pay a $200 deductable later.
Most of the benefits you guys speak of is within the 30 day, 1 time exchange policy. Yes, I have my HOX receipt here and that's what it says. That includes a $35 restocking fee I think. So yes, at the end of the day you can easily go and swap your phone one time in 30 days. but this is where you make a decision if it's worth having this cool service for 30 days or paying less on your monthly bill on a dumb phone plan with a smartphone in addition to unlimited internet. But you get what you paid for, if you pay double the price you get that cool 4G LTE limited data plan. So weigh your pros and cons.
But lets not turn this into a positive reinforcement to make ourselves feel better about our decisions. I think there is a thread for that already, and it's called International vs USA.
This thread is just for the benefits of the International on ATT where you can get unlimited data and save around $1000 dollars or more on your phone bill. Lets keep it that way and lets keep the "defend our decision" in the International vs USA thread. Thank you.
