[Q] Turn off Omnia 7 when charging

I noticed that the phone turns the moment the charger is connected to it (or if the USB cable is attached from a PC that is on). There doesn't seem to be a way to charge the phone with it switched off.
Do the others notice the same behaviour or is this a problem with my Omnia? Is there a way to disable this?

Yeah I have the same thing you cannot charge it while it is turned off. This is true from all the iPhones I have used aswell. It isn't a fault don't worry about it.
I don't know if it can be disabled but why would you want to out of interest?

I tend to charge the phone at night and don't want to receive calls.....

Flightmode is your friend
Settings -> Flightmode on
That cuts all wireless connections, you won't receive calls or SMS at night.

Noticed this too, my phone also reboots when I connect it to a charger too - anyone else had that happen?

With some reading i;ve been doing, *only recently started reading up about li-ion bats* seems they might be on to gain optimal charge / long life at the right voltage.

I'm doing more research into it. But another reason i can think of is, When it's on. Boot up time isn't there. Flight mode is. I use it rather than turning a phone off now, saves turning on the other end, i can play a game, watch a video, listen to music on the plane and charge it on a socket ready for the other end.

Yes, i noticed this issue also... as i remember, in a small book that came with my phone there is written you can charge you phone when its switched off - it will charge faster.. but theres not written how never mind, its like that, and thats the way it is...

Oh this would be bad. I charge my phone at nights too, and have it next to my bed. If the screen would be on it would be too bright to sleep with (I'm a very light sleeper). Hmm...

No, the screen won't be on
The screen turns off after a minute or you can press the standby button manually.
It's just that you can't switch off the phone completely when it is connected to a charger.

Maybe it's some kind of power management that the OS is doing therefore it needs to be on.
Battery life is great on WP7 after all.

Have a problem with your dock/battery?
Read THIS first.
My FOTA update keeps failing to install.
You have to fully return your device to stock (not just unroot). Use NVflash to do this. Then go to the asus ftp server and download any update file. Update your device using that file and this should allow your device to update FOTA properly.
Get a tingling sensation when plugging in a charger?
Flip the charger over and plug it into the wall so that the S in asus is on the side with the fat slot on the plug to fix. Seems to be a faulty adapter issue.
My screen isn't displaying anything:
Make sure none of the side buttons are stuck. Press them and make sure they 'click' ok. Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (6sec power button hold and release). If your screen worked, then stopped, try discharging the battery to 0%. Then re-charging it. This has seemed to clear screen responsiveness for lots of people.
My dock battery is dead and it won't start to re-charge:

My speaker volume is stuck at a certain level:
Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Then wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (6sec power button hold and release).
My device/dock battery isn't charging OR my device/dock battery isn't holding a charge:
Make sure the charger is 100% clipped together properly. It's a very tight fit and may need slight force to snap together. Also make sure you have inserted the usb cable the right way up in your adapter. Sometimes unclipping, and re-attaching the adapter parts fixes problems (some come pre-assembled already so this may not be your issue). If your dock battery indicator doesn't ever go green after about 8hrs of charging (not for the first charge) then it may need RMA'ing. A normal charge of the tablet itself, from empty to full, should take about 3hrs maximum (not for the first charge).
My battery is draining very quickly:
Some apps run fine in the background, but there are others that may be 'keeping alive' certain functions, such as gps, sensors, etc. In order to get around this you can use free task killing apps from the market. It's recommended to be selective about which apps you choose to auto-kill. Don't just put them all on auto-kill (unless you are using a 'safe' option in the app) or your system may become unstable. If you have wifi on when you put the tablet in standby, it stays connected. If you then leave the network coverage area, the tablet will continually search for any network around it, draining the battery further. So when leaving home, remember to switch it off. Another possible cause of major battery drain is a badly coded/incompatible app. Get a battery monitoring app from the market and keep a close eye on the logs it produces. Don't watch every little blip/spike in the readings, try to take an average reading, over a few hours/days to get a better idea of what's happening.
Why isn't my device charging when I plug it into my pc?
It will only charge when the display of the device is off. And it is extremely slow and will only trickle charge. There are ways to boost power to your usb port, but the risks far outweigh any benefits.

Update to the latest firmware. Set your router/modem to a specific channel (set it to 1-11, NOT channel 12 or 13). Failing that, it's probably time to buy a newer wireless N router/modem (the TF does not support 5ghz, only 2.4ghz).
One of my speakers stays on even when nothing is playing from it:
Put your device into standby mode for 5+ seconds. Then turn on again.
My charging cable is too short:
Some 3rd party USB 3.0 male to female extension cables work to extend the length. This seems to be the luck of the draw if it works for you or not.
I get horrible movie recording framerate issues:
This was fixed in firmware update1. Upgrade your firmware.
My microsd card isnt working:
Make sure it is formatted to fat32. Make sure it's securely fixed into the slot. It has to be pushed in quite a way. Use a long fingernail or the edge of a credit card. Make sure it clicks and holds in the slot. It should be flush to the side of the device.

Return and replace for a new unit by RMA'ing your device.
My MKV video playback is jerky/unwatchable/not working:
Make sure it's a low profile encoded file.
My device isn't powering on:
Perhaps you have put it into APX/nvflash mode by mistake (which doesn't display anything onscreen). Force power off your device (10-12 second hold of power button, then release). Then wait for about 30 secs. Then power it on normally (2sec power button hold and release). If still nothing you might have to RMA it for a replacement.
I can't install any apps from the market:
If you are in an unsupported country you can try THIS. If you're not and still can't install, sometimes google does maintenance that affects certain accounts. Try it again at a later time/date.
My onscreen keyboard is laggy:
Change the keyboard from the default Asus keyboard for the stock honeycomb one. Turn off text prediction. If still laggy you have a conflicting app. If fixed then find another keyboard app that you like.
When I plug my device into my pc I cant transfer any files:
Make sure the device's screen is on, and that the lockscreen is not showing.
My dock isn't charging my tablet above 97%:
There is inbuilt code to stop your device from charging above a certain point to prolong the battery life.
Solid Green light = Battery above 95% charge.
Solid Orange (they call it orange) = 10-95% charge.
Orange blinking = Battery less than 3-10% charge.
Orange fast blinking = Battery less than 3% charge.
My screen is sticky:
Give it a wipe with a microfibre cloth. After a few days of use it will be a lot better.

My SDXC card isn't working:
Format it as NTFS, if you are using files over 4gb on it or the card wont work properly. An alternative method is to format the card as Fat32 filesystem (if you are going to be only storing files under 4gb in size), but you will need to partition it into 32gb sections if you use this formatting system, for the full capacity to be usable.

You can modify that behavior in the wifi settings. Take a look at the sleep settngs.

I have not seen this mentioned so it probably is not too common a problem but my wifi was initially invisible to my transformer. Switching the channel from 13 or maybe 14 to something lower fixed the issue.

Yes, and I want to stress: wifi performance on standby is problematic and needs a fix. On the Xoom, wifi can be kept on when the screen turns off and standby performance is in the <.5%/hour battery use range. The Asus needs to have wifi set to turn off when the screen is off to achieve this kind of performance (otherwise, it burns about 3%/hour).
I'm hoping Asus is aware of this issue and will fix it soon in a firmware update.

Touch screen stopped responding to touch
Brand new unit after about an hours use the touchscreen stopped responding to touch. It did this on Friday, May 13th, between Noon and 5pm eastern DST. The unit was working when shut of and was in a safe spot. I went to turn it on and no touchscreen. I noted the time as I think there may have been an OTA update then but I never saw anything on screen.
No monkey business, rooting, tinkering etc. Just learning about unit.
I have wiped the memory and cold booted several times, no change. I note that after a forced off the unit turns back on by its self. I saw earlier when I started the browser for the first time, the right 25% of the screen was over bright then went dark. Exiting browser, screen returned to normal and never saw this behavior again.
Screen may be somewhat dim now but cannot get past setup screen as only power key is responded to.
Already asked B&H for RMA but any magic gratefully accepted.

Unfortunately it sounds like a clear case of a faulty unit. Don't know of anything that can help in that situation im afraid. Not what you'd want to hear of course, but at least it should be a simple exchange for a new one.

Good point, I'm not sure. I assuming that no matter what, the led on the keyboard dock would show just it's own charge.
Will have to monitor it for a bit and get back to you.

Hopefully later once Asus release another update, it will contain the dock battery vs. tablet battery (that got taken out from the .12 beta build) for us to monitor both.

Transformer won't Charge
I received my eee pad transformer from hh gregg yesterday. When I opened the box I noticed that there was a scratch that appeared to be under the the screen. The scratch is very long, but also very fine and you can only see it when the screen is dark and you hold it up to the light. So I figured what the heck, not that big of a deal. However, when I went to charge the transformer, I cannot get it to charge. No light, no nothing. I've tried everything. Plugging it up to the computer, plugging into the wall, taking apart and putting back together, still nothing. I'm trying to figure out what to do. Does anyone know what could be causing this? Asus said I can send to them and they will look at it or I can send it back to the store, however, the store does not have anymore of the transformers in stock.

If you are taking apart and putting back together the wall charger then you likely haven't put it together properly yet; it will not come apart easily at all if it is fully together.
Try pushing harder than you think you should until the pronged portion is snapped in to place and you cannot easily remove it again. If it doesn't snap down, the contacts on the back side don't line up and it won't charge.

Should I connect them together and charge tablet through dock?
For how long? Can I play with it in the mean time?
Should I first charge tablet (how long?)? Than dock (how long)?
Once the tablet is charged... can I connect it to the dock that is not fully charged yet?
If tablet is full... dock ZERO... can I use keyboard... will tablet charge dock as well?
Please help as I do not wish to f... it up

I think your over thinking this just a bit. Connect the tab and doc, put the charger on the doc and let them both charge together. The dock dosent use power (to work) it only provieds extra power to the tab.

you couldn't be more wrong....
The dock charges on its own therefore it does use power "to work", without power it wouldn't work period...unless its made from some alien technology.
there is another thread discussing how quickly the dock battery drains, its supposedly a bug in the software.
Your best bet to optimize battery life is to disconnect the dock when not in use as it has a tendency to keep supplying power even when the tablet is fully charged, therefore it drains much quicker..

there's no reason to keep it connected to the charger if it's already fully charged.

See... my thinking was that the dock (connected to power supply) is next to my bed.
Once I need tablet and dock I got it next to me... And if I use tablet itself and want to put it away instead I would put it back on dock to recharge. Like my phone. This way I will never get to point that I need full batt in the morning in both devices and I do not have it.
My netbook works connected to cord 4days a week if I do not take it away... so I thought I could do similar with AT.

There's nothing wrong with that, it's just better for the battery to not leave it plugged in once its fully charged. Every now and then just unplug that charger and use it until it dies out.

lmao. oh really. If the dock is a %0 it will still continue to "work". Has nothing to do with alien technology. There might be a thread on how quick someone elses battery drains but on my TF dock it takes about 9 hours on hard use to drain it down. I would say that is right on with what Asus says it's supose to be.
Your best bet for optimum battery life is to you your tablet normaly and to not be anal. The tab has its own power supply and unless the charger is unpluged it wont use battery power.

You couldnt be more wrong....
The purpose of keeping the transformer connected to the charger would be the same as keeping your laptop connected even though it was full. If its not connected to a power source it will start to drain the battery. If you want to keep it full then you have to keep it connected. Realizing that you need to do the Asus recomended battery conditioning (complet drain and charge) a few time after you first get both devices.I leave mine on the charger moste of the time and take it off at least once a week to compleatly drain both the dock and the tab.

If I buy a set (tab + dock)... will I get 2 chargers? Is plug (not the one to electric socket) the same on them?
About 2 days ago I saw a set in the shop. It was brand new and not turned on.
I have asked if they can plug it since both dock and tablet were discharged.
Shop did this for me. They plugged dock in and (at least that is how I understand it) both things started to charge.
I turned on tablet to see how keyboard is performing.
And now this is strange - after about 1 min. of use (tried this few times) keyboard dock wasn't not longer working. I could see the cursor on the screen but it was not moving :-(. I had to disconnect the tab from the dock and reconnect it again. And it was working fine for another minute.
Two more questions:
1. When tab is on the dock is there a way to wake it up like Win laptop - through keyboard keys or only switch on the tab itself?
2. When dock functions froze I could not call for on screen keyboard :-( (although dock was not working). Is this OK?

Unfortunatly no they were dumb about that. Only the Tab itself comes with the charger and even that is wierd becouse the cord is extramly short.I dont know whatyou were going through but I have never had that happen to me. Could been a connection issue between the dock and the tab.
Im not sure but I keep a mouse plugged into my doc and when the screen goes of and I move the mouse the screen will come back on.
When the doc is connected and there is a place where you need to use a keyboard there will be a small keyboad on the bottom of your screen. If you touch that keyboard a menu comes up and you can select "use physical keyboard" (on & off). If you can't then I would say there is an issue.

I dont use themouse pad but when I just tried it it did not wake up the screen. But when I pressed a key on the keyboard the screen did wake.
If you touched the icon and nothing happened I would say there is something wrong.

I have to say I personally use my Htc Evo to thether and there is even an app that you can install on the tab that allows you to control tethering without having to go to your phone. I travel to Colorado-Tennessee-Texas-Florida and the tethering work great while on the road. As far as movies I tether and watch movies on www.greatstufftv.com and that holds me over until Nexflix gets on board. Check out the website etherway its a good place to watch movies and tv shows.

Battery drain while tablet is turned OFF

I was using my Nexus 7 til it hit about 15% and the battery alert came out. I turned it off, plugged into the charger and left it there overnight. The following night I took it out of my pouch only to realise that its very warm. I had to press on the power button for a good 10 seconds before it turned on, and when it booted up the battery had only 5% remaining, even though it was fully charged (I checked to make sure it was 100%) and was left OFF the entire day.
I encountered this before but thought I solved the issue after wiping the device and flashing CleanROM 3.0 without any custom kernels or tweaks. Looks like the issue is back, any idea what might be wrong? I hope it has nothing to do with the physical battery itself because that would be a pain. Other than this, the day to day battery life of the tablet and stability is pretty good.

My wife's phone does something very similar. Crashes, heats up and when she gets it back on the battery has taken an absolute hammering. Luckily it occurs only rarely and it appears that there are no long term consequences.

What phone is she using? Is it rooted?
Anyway I think i figured out why, i happened to notice it by chance. After full charge, i plug it out and notice the screen is actually turned on even though the device isnt! The screen is just showing a plain blank screen, but you can tell its turned on, by looking at an angle. I had to manually force a shut down by holding the power button before it goes off, then the tablet automatically switches on. It seems that it only happens when i charge the tablet while its switched off, I wonder if it has anything to do with the bootloader (Im on 4.2.1) or the charger itself.

Galaxy s2 rooted, does not appear to be rom or kernel specific as it occurs with different combinations. Anyway good news you have at least identified the problem.

Sounds like it never charged. Why turn it off to charge it? Airplane mode is just as good.

If thats the case have you tried re-calibrating the battery? Sounds like its pretty messed up, thats what i'd do.

It did charge because when i turned it back on it showed as 95%, the first 5% was drained because the screen was left "on" the whole time. I am beginning to suspect it is the case I use with the tablet. Its similar to those smart cases on the iPad where the screen auto ons/off when you flip or close the cover. I notice that even during the process of shutting the tablet down the flap still affects the screen off/on when i close it. A potential way of screwing up stuff. Next time I charge it turned off, I'll try removing the case entirely and see what happens.

Alright this time I turned the tablet off and left it to charge over night WITHOUT the casing and now it's working fine. No screen on or any heat whatsoever.

Why are you turning it off to charge? Just plug it in and be done with it. I never turn any of my devices off - the only time my S2 has been off is to reboot to flash a new ROM. Never have any charging issues.

Its just a habit i guess, and i always have the mentality that it makes a difference charging it while off
And its also good to reboot your phone once in a while, I usually do it once every 24 hours of use. Y'know, to flush out the RAM and OS so it can start anew. :highfive:

Nexus 7 won't turn on

My wife's Nexus 7 suddenly won't turn on... It still had juice when she went to charge it, but the next day found it was totally dead.
I've tried different chargers, tried to get to the bootloader, opened it and unplugged the battery, hooked it up via USB to my computer, etc and nothing will get this thing to power on.
Any ideas?

I mean, how long did you leave it on AC power? I know when I drain mine since coming to KitKat, it takes as long as a half an hour to respond again.

Sorry, it spent more than a day on the charger. Still nothing, cannot get it to respond at all.

If you haven't already, try holding the power button for a while until *hopefully* the Google splash appears.
A good way to tell if the device is accepting a current is by using a charger that can verify this somehow, like with an embedded LED. One like this: http://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/rapid-wall-charger-with-6-ft-cable-for-micro-usb/
I used this for my HTC Rezound when it still worked to make sure it was taking a charge because it would report it was charging in the OS but the charger module itself reported otherwise (the red Verizon ring didn't illuminate unless the charger was positioned a certain way in the device thus this was the only way I could supply it a charge and not hope it wasn't dead in the morning). When my Nexus 7 is drained, it draws enough voltage to get the charger to illuminate so maybe try one of these to really make sure it's still responding.
For the meanwhile, if you do decide to buy one, what was the last thing you/your wife had done? Was there root access?

Interesting about the charger -- don't think I have one that does that. Maybe I'll see if my VZW store has one, not sure yet.
She had just used her tablet as normal, and plugged it in like she does every other day or so -- the next morning grabbed it and went to work only to find out that it was dead. IE: not turning on.
- No root access (totally stock)
- I've tried holding the power button for up to 2 mins. - nothing
- Even tried holding the down volume and power for up to 2 mins. together - nothing
- Removed the back and unplugged the battery (plug was really tight) and left it undone for 5 mins and reconnected - nothing
- When plugging in to a USB on the computer, the computer dings like I connected something but - nothing
Perhaps I'll take it apart again and see if I can get a voltage reading on the battery with my multimeter... didn't do that before, but would be good to know if it is charged and not turning on or what.

Remove the back cover, locate the plug to the battery, disconnect plug by sliding from right to left, then replug. Should be fine after that.

Thanks but I already did that. Nothing changed. If I don't get it going soon I'll be forced to buy something else as she is getting impatient.

I bought a refurbish one and it was working great for 2 days and yesterday when I tried to open it, it won't turn on anymore and I was able to browse on it 5 min before.
I tried everything but I cannot find any solution...
When I plug into a wall I cannot see the charging icon and when I plug it into my computer it will do the noise that a device is plug but nothing happen... I wonder if its the battery that is crap

I own 3 of these N7 tablets and this has been the number one issue. Sent one for repair when it was under warranty. The supplied Nexus wall charger burn out quick, and aftermarket cables last only 3 months. I've had better results using the Samsung wall charger and cable.

OP, it sounds like your wife's N7 is in APX mode. Connect it to your PC via a USB cable, and open Control Panel's devices and printers panel. If it sees an APX device, and you didn't make NVFlash blobs, your only recourse is a motherboard replacement.

I just got my new N7 32gb GSM 2012 in the mail today. Won't turn on at all. I'm not going to bother. Going to return it. Quite disappointed, as I didnt realized this issue (apparently with the battery) was so common. Was looking forward to flashing cyanogenmod. Poop. Might just get a samsung tab now, which I think is quite overpriced for its specs.

If you're seriously looking for something other than an N7 then I'd suggest you look at the LG G-Pad.
I bought one for my Dad at Christmas and was amazed by how good the screen is, and the tablet generally, for the price. The LG skin is minimal and can be changed obviously with another launcher, and the battery life is better than my N7.
