[Q] Firmware Update for Dock failed; doesn't work anymore! - Eee Pad Transformer General

Good evening,
I finally got my Transformer this afternoon and I have been playing around all the time. I didn't connect the dock until a few minutes ago and as soon as I did, everything worked fine instantly. Then a firmware update popped up. I thought yeah, why not?
The update failed which I thought was due to a bad Wi-Fi connection. Anyhow, I thought it wasn't a serious issue and that I could retry the update. But I can't. My Transformer won't recognize the dock anymore
What shall I do?
EDIT: Issue is resolved, exact reason unknown. Just let the dock fully charge and connect it without Wi-Fi before doing the update.

It happened to me as well. As soon as I connected my eee pad to the dock it would prompt me to do an update which would fail and freeze the dock. The caps lock light would start blinking and the only way to unfreeze it was to let the battery drain. Unfortunately there is no fix for this issue and I end up sending the dock to ASUS for repair. If there is a chance for you to exchange it do so ASAP. Good luck.

Thank you for this information. What a shame. I have the exact same symptoms, especially the capslock blinking which I googled for before posting here.
It worked again before, even though the dock's battery wasn't empty. I will try it later again. If it doesn't work I'll contact Asus.
Early adopters have these issues. Well, as long as the tablet part works, I'll be okay.

I wonder if these dock firmware failures occur when the dock battery is too low?
Pretty sure my dock firmware update notification did not then trigger a download, I think this had already arrived with prior FOTA update, and the dock fimware update was triggered when first docked. I did charge the dock fully before docking the first time.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App

I was charging the dock for like 2 hours before I connected it. You think that wasn't enough? I'm going to charge it over night and then try again.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Well, I didn't want to wait and as soon as I got the green light on the dock for being fully charged, I disabled my tablet's Wi-Fi and reconnected both. Then I could use my keyboard and mouse, which were slightly laggy at that point.
After a few minutes I re-enabled Wi-Fi and let it download the firmware update and install it without any trouble. Now everything works very smooth. A happy ending after all; typing this using my Transfomer yay!

Can somebody confirm their MobileDock version for me because I've only had one update to 3.1 (Build Number 8.4.4.5; MobileDock EP101-0209) and apparently there are no new updates when I check, but when I updated it the tablet wasn't connected to the dock.

When you do an update, it also downloads the update for the dock even if it is not connected. The next time you connect the dock, it will prompt you that there is an update for the dock which you can install.

Edit: Issue is resolved. The battery had to completely drain and no longer charge the tablet, and then further drain so the white caps lock light would stop blinking. Once the white light stopped blinking, the tablet recognized it again, and the firmware update was available and worked successfully.
Hi,
Has anyone else had this happen lately and have a working fix?
I just did the most recent OTA update and then it prompted to do the mobile dock update. I accepted, but the wifi wasn't working properly and it stalled.
I went to re-connect to the internet and I wasn't thinking and unplugged the dock to get the on screen keyboard working again and when I reconnected it tried to update again. It came back saying Mobile Dock update Failed, and the keyboard hasn't worked since. The Caps Lock key is currently flashing.
The only thing that works is the dock will charge the tablet. I tried draining the dock battery just now and its as far as it will go, but it still won't recognize it when I connect it back. For now I'll try re-charging the dock, but I get no indiciation that the charging is working on the dock when I plug it in.
Is there a way to manually re-update the dock with the microSD card? I try to do the system update and it says there isn't anything to do. Does anyone think installing Prime would resolve this, and then I could go back to normal 3.2?
Edit: So I just left the dock "Charging" for awhile, and now it won't charge the tablet at all. This leads me to believe that the dock won't charge anymore. I can still charge the tablet via the dock when its connected to the AC outlet. The white light is still flashing...
Thanks!

[Q] Dock problems/questions

I got the dock this afternoon and it worked great. After about an hour of use I got prompted for an update. I installed it, and the tablet rebooted. I went to move the cursor, only to see that it wasn't there. Disconnected and reconnected the tablet and got nothing. Rebooted, nothing.
I tried doing a factory reset, and went back to .9 (from .13). Still nothing.
If I connect the tablet to the dock and plug it into my computer, it's still getting recognized. So I know there is at least some form of communication going through it.
Is there any way to reset the dock or something? Can I tell if it's charging? With the dock plugged into the wall, and the tablet connected there's no lightening bolt in the battery icon (there is if I just plug it straight into the tablet). It also appears that the battery is still going down with it plugged into the dock and the dock plugged into the wall.
Anyone have some suggestions? I'm going on vacation next week and really want to take this with me
You tried everything but the most obvious. Try pressing the touchpad on/off button... 4th button along from the top left on the keyboard dock.

Guess I should have worded it better.
The dock doesn't connect to the tablet at all. There's no notification down by the clock. Hitting any button on the keyboard does absolutely nothing.
Also, I can confirm that it's not being charged. For the last hour, the tablet has been in the dock and plugged into the wall. The battery has only gone down.
What happens when you just plug the charger into the dock part, without the tablet connected? Does the little led near the adapter port come on at all?

I see nothing with it plugged into the wall or the computer
I just installed Prime 1.3 which has the optional dock firmware. From what I read, it's supposed to prompt me to install it when the tablet is docked. It doesn't...
Sounds like you have a bricked dock then if no power light at all. It happened to a few people after the update. They had to RMA theirs. If you want more details on that you'll have to use search.

Yea, awesome. Returning it through Amazon right now. Shame...definitely won't have one before I leave next week.
Navalhawkeye, I had similar issue after updating keyboard. Is there a question mark on battery icon?
When connected to the dock? No. It just shows the normal non-charging icon.
Sounds like yours is even worse than mine..
I can still use the keyboard and trackpad - it still charges my tablet when connected - but the dock battery itself refuses to charge now.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1080137
You'd THINK there'd be some sort of 'reset to factory' keypress on the dock - or some way to reset it and its FW, but I haven't found anything.
fu utility
after looking into the fu utility that located in /system/bin/fu, it seems that after the firmware update, there is a service that updates the keyboard if a certain condition is met.
The command to initiate such update is:
Code:
/system/bin/fu -c /system/etc/EC/FU.cfg -d /system/etc/EC/FU-d.cfg /system/etc/EC/TF101-EC-0209.rom
I'm not sure its possible to run this command in unrooted device, so you'll probably need root.
Can someone verify this?

Opened them both yesterday, updated firmware on both.
OP's #6 is true in my case. The checking and unchecking does nothing for me.
The keyboard dock does not charge at all either.

I had a question mark on battery icon and dock was not being recognized, did not work, but it did charge. How did you solve your issue? I had to send both, tablet and dock in. Got my tablet back today, but dock is still with Asus...

So replying to my own post....
I exchanged the keyboard at Bestbuy. The new one is also a B50 but the serial number is higher. This one does charge up to 100%. BUT touching any key will turn on the device (even when the new power saving option is checked) and it does drain the battery. With the combo off battery went down 6% in 4 hours.
Playing a 720p HD movie using MOBO player and lowest brightness takes about 20% of the battery every hour and it only uses power from the dock until it dies I think because tablet stayed at 100%.
I tested the combo for battery usage and here are the results:
Time Dock Battery Tablet Battery
5:00pm 56% 98%
Wifi Off, Screen Off
9:00pm 50% 98% (6% dock used in 4 hours of sleep)
Wifi On, Screen Off
11:00pm 46% 98% (4% dock used in 2 hours of sleep with WIFI on)
Wifi On, Screen On, Played 1.5 hour 720p HD movie using MOBOPlayer and went to bed and let it sleep 1min after inactivity (default)
9:00am 03% 93% (46% dock and 5% tablet used in 1.5hours of movie playing and 8.5 hours of sleep with with WIFI on)

Freezing when unplugging charger

This has been happening to me more and more lately.
In the morning I grab my Iconia and take it off charge and the device freezes on the lock screen. I have to hold down the power button to turn it off and then turn it on again. It's happened 3 of the last 4 days. It never happened before the OTA update either. Sometimes it freezes with the screen on and when I next go to use it the battery has taken a hit. Today it froze but if I pressed the power button it asked if i wanted to shut down, but the touchscreen was unresponsive. Is anyone else getting this?
This has happened to me a lot, too. I have rooted the device and changed the wpa_supplicant file, but that is all. I'm considering returning it because my first experience with android is proving to be a major disappoitment.
just letting you know that this bug has nothing to do with you plug/unplug the charger...etc
it happened when the device is left in standby for a long time...
only some reported it... some do not have this bug...etc ( with so many different build # out there... can't really troubleshoot since people are allover the map with different build # )
things might iron out with new updates...etc
one of the "workaround" I heard/read was to disable the screen lock/password ...etc
worth a shot
Having this issue myself. I feel it's also just coincidence with the charging, it's likely just after the device being in stand by for so long.
Some times it'll turn on for a minute, then if I don't touch the screen for about 30 seconds it freezes and won't respond.
This issue didn't start until after the update.
This happens to me too
In fact every morning now since the update.
I plug it in when i go to sleep and in the morning i unplug it, unlock it and open an app and it freezes. Today i read an email in k9 and then opened tapatalk and it froze.
But i just got that problem in the morning, never had it during the day.

I've had the same issue since and OTA update at the end of last week. I can't find any consistency in when it does it though.
Ever since the update i had from 1.104 - 1.139.05_com_gen1 if i leave the tablet in standby by the morning it will not wake from sleep.
Not a real issue as i just power down instead of sleep now but an irritation caused by the update.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Well guys I had the issue before the update when I was on 1.104.05_com_gen1. Now I'm on 1.141.07 issue is still there but a quick reboot fixes it for the day. I would just say give Acer time and hey you have a 1yr mfg. If they don't fix it in the original builds exchange it down the road for a newer one.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
Come'on Acer, this is a issue that should have been fixed before releasing the tablet.
I for one will never buy an Acer again, but hey, we all make mistakes.
For an additional data point
I also have this issue and it happened for me both before and after the OTA update. If this doesn't get fixed soon by Acer, I'm going to be massively pissed off since I'm beyond the time where I can return it
This looks to me pretty similar to the Sleep Of Death problem that plagues a lot of Transformers.
If you leave the tablet go to stand by, and it is not connected to the charger, you may be forced to power off the device (keep power pushed for several seconds to shut it down, then power on again).
I was hoping the Acer didn't show this problem, but it seems it has something to be with honeycomb rather than hardware itself.
On the TF subforum there are lot of ideas: low voltage to keep the CPU working while in suspend seems to be the more appropiate one.
Regards.
This morning it did not hang but it restarted itself.
Unplugged charger, opened facebook app, read a message and bam restart
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
This morning no hanging or restarting. At least not yet.
But i didnt charge it over night
This could be a coincidence
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Every couple of days I'll have this problem - I always plug the tablet in to charge overnight and use both Gentle Alarm app followed by an alarm from the standard clock app. I can shut off both alarms with no problems, but when I later pick up the tablet for my morning web stuff, sometimes the tablet freezes on about the 4th or 5th "touch" action after I've unplugged it. Have to turn it off to fix.
Happening more and more frequently for me. Was once a day after update but happening every few hours now. Does not matter if its on charge or not.
Love the a500 and will wait before giving up on this but it is becoming a pain as reboot takes a little while.
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk
Mine happens on the unplug. How do I know? The screen time is when I unplugged it, it will just stay that way forever, unless I reboot it.
Any luck on finding a solution for this issue.

I don't think this has anything to do with the update. Mine updated and charges ok.
I did however have a problem charging once (before the update) and I searched the web for solutions. I think you will find it's a problem with the mains charger. It overheats and the thermal cut-out fails to reset. As mad as it sounds the solution is to pop the charger in a plastic bag and pop it in the freezer for 30 minutes. It worked for me and countless others and is worth a try.
Good luck though.
had same issue. seems my charger was not well seated with the clip on plug.
Non issue

Wow! I tried to google search on unable to charge after updates, but could not find any meaningful matches.
I will try this fridge trick, although it's another example that asus really rushed this entire project out! We have been beta testing an unfinished product.... But I guess that's the norm these days.
Thanks!
I find that sine the latest update, the battery drains faster and I have to plug it in and out a couple of times until I see that it's charging..Also, all of a suddent the touchpad (not the keys) will wake up the tablet when it's docked

If it bothers you then you can always disable the touchpad... I'm still on 3.2 but the touchpad always intefered with my typing so I have it disabled by default.

Hopefully yes, a reboot fix the situation. Today, i'm trying to not disabled the wifi (or, turn wifi off manually each time), and i'll see if the USB/SD disconnet again !

It's not really a bother, but it shouldn't happen. Turns out the tablet, with the new 3.2.1 update is not able to sleep. I think it's something to do with the new wifi "improvement". Using cpuspy, the tablet is not sleeping at all unless I manually turn off wifi and reboot. This needs to be looked into and corrected by Asus, unless I'm incorrect or have an isolated incident.
no, it's note an isolated incident, i have approximatly the same situation here !

Not the case for me. I had all sorts of sleep/reboot issues with 3.2 (using custom roms and kernels), and nothing resolved them other than a complete return back to stock with a full bios wipe.
Since updating to 3.2.1 and then to Prime 2.01 (sticking with stock kernel), my tablet is turning wifi off when the screen goes off, and is going into deep sleep as evidenced by the fact that it is only using around 2% over 9 hours while not being used. I was concerned that like others I would have sleep/reboot issues when docked as this seems to be a problem, but tested that issue last night and when I checked today after not using it for 10 hours, no reboots, no ramdump.log and battery life used was minimal in line with deep sleep.
I truly believe that the solution to all these issues is to completely return to stock - including the part where after you have removed CWM (if you have it), you start the tablet holding down power and up to enter the asus startup mode and then select the option that wipes everything. But YMMV....
As for my original issue when I started this thread, it turned out the charging issue was indeed a problem with the charger overheating as pointed out by another member (THANKS), as a quick 30 minutes in the freezer seemed to reset the internal thermostat. From now on I unplug when not using the charger.
^^^ That's cool that yours is under control, but mine is stock, unrooted. Don't really have the inclination or motivation to root this thing..But it appears that it is a definite issue for stock, unrooted Transformers, judging by response
Same here, stock, unroot ! But I prefer waiting for Asus inseed of turning back to custom ROM...

Solution to this is unplug your transformer, keep it as tablet only, press and hold the power button for over 30 seconds, plug in and then switch on.
Worked for me Asus says the issue is a static build up on the device with having external devices plugged in, like hard drives, not sure if thats accurate, but the fix has been solid for me!
My Tablet and Dock have the same issue since the last OTA, charge doesn't works. PLIZ ASUS FIX THIS ISSUE !
8-10 in the freezer and my tablet off for those 10 mins worked for me.

Keyboard not working but touchpad is

Hey guys,
I've got a weird problem and I hope you could help. I got a transformer with keyboard dock from newegg about a month ago. Last week, the keyboard stopped working. The charging light on the dock turns on when the tablet gets docked and stays on. The transformer knows it's docked (there's a docked icon) but the Dual Battery widget shows N/A for the dock.
Originally, when this happened neither the keyboard nor the touchpad do anything. I did a factory reset and now Everything still doesn't work as before but the touchpad now works. Also, charging from USB works when the tablet is docked.
Currently, I'm trying to fully discharge the dock as I've seen hints that it might fix it but it's been taking forever and a half to discharge.
So, I come to you in hopes that you'll have ideas for a fix.
Also, the tablet and the dock should have the latest firmware installed on them currently.
First of all, I don't know for sure anything.
A possibility is you could have gotten a returned/refurbished dock. It's been worked on by asus people. When they put it back together, they accidentally flipped the switch that turned off the battery in the dock. They could also have been lazy and didn't check to see if the wire connecting the keyboard to the board was tightened in there. It could have fallen out after some time.
The point is you should RMA it.
It was working just fine for a month and then stopped. I probably will need to RMA it but hoping I wont.

My tf300tg didn't recognise the keyboard dock anymore

hello,
I've looked on several threads, but didnt find any similat thread so I'll start a new one.
I bought my TF300tg several days ago and the problem is that the keyboard dock doesn't work at all anymore.
In the morning the tablet detect it when I restarted the tablet docked, it said "docking connected" but the dock battery was 0% although it should be fully charged (I left the tablet and dock to charge togheter over night). So, I disconnected the dock and after this is not recognised anymore, no matter what I've tried (reboot with dock connected or disconnected and connected after, removing the sim card etc).
Another thing, when the tablet is docked it keeps random rebooting every few minutes.
Other times (maybe it's a related problem) the tablet freezed with black screen (it started 2-3 days ago) and it looks like is not powered on, but actually it's on and the only way to start it is to reset it by keeping the power button pressed for 10 secs.
I have the latest software updates and I'm on stock rom.
Thank you.
Well lets start of with a few questions. Has your tablet been dropped lately? Are you rooted? Have you tried to do a factory reset? Have you tried a cold reboot?

No, it didn't droped, no harm at all.
I have stock rom 4.1.1. latest version.
Cold boot with docking keyboard either pluged or not didn't solve the problem.
Either hard reset folowed by cold reset. Further more, when I first docked the tablet...it reseted itself..)
The tablet charges from docking keyboard.
I'm not the only one with this problem, I've seen similar posts on other sites, but none were answered.
PS: my girlfriend has the same tablet, I will see who's the culprit.
PPS: I've tested the docking keyboard with another TF300TG. It's not recognized either and my tablet recognize the other dock. So, it seem that my dock has a malfunction. Pretty strange, though.
Later Edit: Due to the fact that the docking station was in the 10 days return period, I've returned it and it was exchanged for free.
