I think this one may be better as it is TF specific plus covers downgrading.

This is the guide I used and it worked fine. I wound up with a bunch of force closes after I downgraded, but I managed to be patient and get through them far enough to be able to root the device. It just took longer to get the device show up in the adb list of connected devices.
I think the force closes were related to a gmail widget that I had on my home screen, but not certain of that.

yes decided to follow that guide just trying too back stuff up with out root its tough dont want to loose my dolphin bookmarks etc but with them all being on the internal sd it gets wiped so going to back up as much as i can and root later

+1 for this guide, despite using Mac OSX so the commands deviated slightly when it came to entering them, it was so easy to follow the steps and rooted my transformer first time without a hitch. Good luck for later when you apply the hack.

I am interested to see if any of you get a custom ROM and if you think it significantly improves performance.
At the moment, I am quite disappointed in the performance of the tablet.
Been holding off rooting due to not wanting to void warranty, and not positive about how/if can get back to stock for warranty purposes.
I want to be sure it is really worth the effort, and risk of warranty issues.

To Root or Not to Root; That is the Question

I rooted my VM Cruz Reader to get app2sd working. So I have a tiny bit of experience rooting a device. I'm still a nooby to Android, and wondering if I should root my A500 (I'd really like to get rid of those goofy "rooms" or whatever they are that Acer added). What's giving me pause is the OTAs. I read recently that HC 3.2 will soon be out, and later this year Ice Cream Sandwich will be out. Will rooting my A500 impede these updates? You can imagine my joy at using the A500 after using a Cruz Reader. Consequently I'm really worried about bricking it. There's a lot of difference between the value of a Cruz Reader and an A500.

Depending on which version of Droid you're using, you can use either "Gingerbreak", or " Iconia Root" to root your device. Both are easy to use, and you can unroot just as easily and receive OTAs. Before you ask, use the search function on this forum for both the aforementioned programs.
Thanks. I've already read about the roots, and I think Iconia Root will work for me. So if I'm understanding you, you remove the root for the OTA, then re-root? That's it?

what it seems like you're missing is tha tthe devs here will have the OTA releases as well and implement the new features/whatever into their roms....if it's anything like any other devices i've had, they will have the rlses before you would get it OTA. No reason I can think of not to root. Just by not getting the OTAs you won't be missing out if you stay current with whatever flavor rom you prefer

And of course I'd have to go back reread everything on how to for this tab which I did for my dx and takes alot of time. Question - If you are rooted this is a no brainer. YOU JUST SAY NO... what ever they are offering you has probably been in the forum as a rom for quite some time. If they are offering you an update it probably means you are running an older rooted rom. Just update to the new rooted one in the development section.

You could download it but I wouldn't recommend it. Best case scenario is you would just loose root. worse case is it won't boot (soft bricked) after install because it's not upgrading a "stock" phone. Pretty sure you will just loose root as tiamat 1.4.4 is not really a true full rom it's just a kernel.
Anyways I recommend you follow the instructions at
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979to put on the "right" clockworkmod recovery. and then put on The HammerHead Rom (which is based on 3.2) at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203635 the Hammerhead rom runs perfect for me (and most everyone else). Then put on the 3.2 Overclocked Kernel at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200063
I was basically in your situation and I got all that done and all my 100+ apps reinstalled (using Titanium Pro) and basically everything set back up in about 2.5 hours.

But i still have friends that all ask me silly questions all day and one even ugraded ota on their g2 and lost root.. Now they have ginger 2.3.2 i thi k and that cannot be rooted last i checked. I do wonder why people do the minimal searching... I took the time to learn this stuff so why can they... It does get frustrating

Understatement of the century there. Takes about twenty minutes, including the time it takes to search the dev forum using the phrase "downgrade 3.2". You don't even need a PC, you can do it all using the tablet.

So... you basically cooked up your own rom and added SU to it.
To anyone else who needs to root just download kekinash's stock rom with superuser, it's the exact same thing as this without the steps just flash and you have rooted 3.2.
And you are in a small group of people that have SD card issues, I've owned 2 Iconia a500's and neither had a single SD issue.
It wasn't me
It was timmyDean who added root for stock 3.2. he described how to get root in adb shell only (the very first post in the thread I posted)
The way to add superuser for applications was described by chrishohl on the 3rd page of the same thread
Following his how-to one can get the rooted stock 3.2 without downgrade.

Nope, I haven't any issues with SD card, the only goal for now is 3G USB modem kernel modules. I haven't find any modules for the stock 3.2 kernel version.
Those for 3.1 failed to load with insmod since they had been built for another kernel version.

[GUIDE] How to prepare for ICS upgrade for root users

Look at the following description and choose the right one.
(1) Flash back to stock rom and stock recovery via easy unroot.
(2) Re-root via nachoroot
(3) Install OTA rootkeeper.
(4) Wait for ICS. Call in sick everyday if you have to. Keep mashing the check for update button.
That seems like a lot of pain when the devs are certain to adopt the ICS Asus rom as base to their custom roms.

Well sure. That might be. But that will take time.
Some people want the ICS update the very second it is out. Reverting to stock allows them to get it the second it is out without waiting for ROM developers to update and retweak their ROMs for a new major Android-version, a process which most likely will take some time.
Besides. I like to know how the stock experience is before going for something different. If stock is good enough, I see no reason to rely on custom ROMs.

The OTA update will not automatically install if CWM is installed like it is the case on a completely stock TF.
Therefore some people adjust the OTA update (remove recovery and add root) and publish this so you can install this with CWM. See developer forum.
The original OTA update also include recovery update (where CWM is installed) and remove root. You can use OTA rootkeeper to avoid loosing root.
Summary:
- root with stock rom and stock recovery will allow OTA update from Asus but you loose root; use OTA rootkeeper to avoid loosing root
- root with stock rom and CWM recovery will not allow OTA update from Asus; use adjusted OTA update and install with CWM (keeps root and CWM)
- custom rom, then no OTA update possible; just wait for update of developer custom rom

Well, stock has gone a long way from back in May. Back then, I went with custom roms because they were more stable and smoother to work with. Recently, I flashed back to stock and have been using it daily. Could not tell the difference between stock and custom rom anymore. Asus, or google, has done a good job at stabilizing and improving the original stock rom.
When ICS comes out, I will at first use stock. Then I will try out custom ICS roms. I'll evaluate them on a regular day to day usage. I don't care much for all the tests that people do. I'm a realistic guy. I believe in reality.

It must be possible somehow since the Asus Service Centre of my country (Hungary) offered me to put back the ICS ROM when I complained about the bugs of the JB upgrade. They wrote me they would do it free of charge, covering by the warranty, because my ROM it's pure stock, without unlocking.
It's another story that now, after receiving the fresh OTA update I may not want to get back to ICS...

There is no way. I tried all methods. You cant get the old Bootloader to flash, because of the signature missmatch
BTW
You can flash any ICS Rom over JB. It just want boot. So its not in any use to do so.
Just never do the bootloader wipe and you will be fine with fastboot.

Anyone have any of the threads where someone bricked going from JB to ICS? I have searched and searched with no examples!
I actually tried flashing ICS over JB as an attempt to downgrade. This was my process.
I tried flashing a custom ICS rom, and nothing happened, practically. Of course, I wiped the Rom, so when I tried to reboot, I was warned that no Rom existed. I tried flashing the stock rom from Asus, and that did not work either. So I use fastboot to push the ICS recovery to the tablet. When I attempted to reboot, it failed. When I tried to get back into recovery, I received a message under the message "This device is unlocked" in red letters saying, "Signature mismatch." At this point, my stomach was in my throat. I rebooted into flashboot, and sent the jb recovery image back to my tab. This was when I reflashed a custom JB Rom, and gave up. I know that I could've tried using fastboot to push both the bootloader from Asus and an ICS recovery image, but seeing those red letters was enough warning for me.
So I'm now JB for life, and I'm fine with that!
Who need ICS back? I think that Jelly Bean is just great on this tablet (at least with a custom rom). I upgrated and I never looked back lol
NVFlash!
I should have said this is in reply to geldebanho

To be honest, I did not necessarily want to go back to ICS, but I didn't like the thought that I couldn't. Rebellious human nature... . I flash between GB and ICS on my phone on a daily basis.
