SuperCurio from galaxy s fame developing his sound kernel / app for TF - Eee Pad Transformer General

Just noted a tweet and screen shot from this galaxy s legend who turned a mobile phone device into a hifi quality audio device due to its wolfson chipset. it has to be heard to be believed.
If he ports this accross to the tf (does it have the same chip) then omg we are in for a treat

Nice one. Pic wouldn't load for me but I found it from his Twitter feed:
http://twitter.com/#!/supercurio

Yeah hope he gets it fully working, he done wonders for the galaxy s and as the chipset is high end and samsung had crippled it it was amazing to hear with a good set of headphones, truly different class.

Any news on this?

See the Twitter link I posted above. And especially this post:

Thanks- this is awesome. I was looking into fixing the speaker balance issue, but I would much rather use something like voodoosound to take care of it.

Can someone explain what this does? Is it for the loud speakers or for plugging in earbuds?

Both. Voodoo sound basically unlocks the potential of the soundchip in the TF. Granted, the built-in speakers are pretty crappy so you won't notice too much of a difference. But if you have a pair of high-end headphones the difference is amazing.
I have a Samsung Vibrant with Voodoo sound, and the difference is unbelievable. Samsung really tried to cage a beast with this phone... looks like Asus is doing the same. Why?

Sound quality?
As an iPhone and Westone UM3x i'm having a hard time avoiding the purchase of a Note fearing that it could sound as bad as the Galaxy S2 (RF & CPU noise bleeding and sky high output impedance) thus if somebody with multidriver iems and discernimg ear could chime in it would help me an awful lot since the screen of the Note is so damn tempting that the iPhone looks like a cheap toy when i see them side by side at the store.

Commented on another audio discussion thread already (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323764 - after page 7 approx, since the 1st few pages were just speculation and drivel), but I'm fairly happy with the Note, Neutron MP and a pair of Earsonics SM3's (v1). No RF/CPU noise with the Note at all. Not as detailed/rounded vs Galaxy Tab with Voodoo and Neutron MP, but overall quite good imo. As someone mentioned in the other Note audio discussion thread, audio output is tight and clean.

Yes that certainly needs work. On that test image I made the shades below 4 just cut off completely, no ramp. This causes black blotches in shadow detail in video. I don't know what the hell Samsung was thinking there, so dumb.
Also there needs to be an RGB slider color adjust tool. As we know some screens are greenish, some reddish etc. The screen needs to be calibrated. I know I would bump down the green on mine a few notches to get accurate grayscales.

Knowing that no RF/CPU noise bleeds is a great relief.
What i still fear though is that the output impedance is as high as it is in the Galaxy S II. You can try to offset the tonal skew by eqing but i hate equalizers or any DSP. I run all my audio hardware flat. If it's good it will stand but i'm not so sure that the Note will stand. I tried on store a couple of Samsung preloaded tunes with my UM3x and i noticed the sound was not as full and detailed as it's on my iPhone. But to assess the sound quality loss i'm afraid i'd need to buy one and try out a couple of good sounding albums (Steely Dan, Wilco or Sheryl Crow stuff).
Anyway i guess that i could always carry around my 7G 240 Gb modded iPod (and whenever i feel the need to visit audio nirvana amp it with the awesome ibasso T3).
But i'd end up carrying around two devices instead of just an iPhone.
It seems that i must choose whether to please my ears (iPhone) or my eyes (Note).
after just 2days of careful inspection, Note is marginally better than S2 in terms of SQ... not to brag but i have serious gears and ears to backup my findings...
(you can view my profile on head-fi and mobile-review)
About iPhone; its very sterile and flat; analytic per se... i prefer the more fun sound sig of the Note or N8...
and about SUPERCURIO jumping on our ship; its a breath... i wonder whats on his mind, but i prefer it to further improve the SQ... i love his screen tuning app on my S2 but i spoil more my ears than my eyes...
Sorry I am new to all this custom ROM stuff but who is this Superserio guy? Did he make some legendary rom/mod or something?

Wolfson chip or not At&t gs3 produces great audio

I know there is a big question as to whether the American gs3 has the wolfson audio chip. I can tell you right away that using poweramp with the rock preset produces some of the best audio I have heard out of any media player. Just so you understand my level of audio history I currently own Shure e500 pth, Phonak audeo pfe 232, klipsch x10, velodyne vpulse, ultimate ears super fi .5 eb, klipsch s4, shure se535, klipsch image one, audio technica pro 700 mk2. I have owned cowon d3, j3, ipod touch ipod classic, toshiba gigabeat s60. I am just giving you guys a heads up that it also is powerful enough to drive all the headphones (except for th Audio technica) without an amp. Hopefully this post helps a music fanatic like myself.

Well Quad core doesnt really matter outside of benchmarks because there will b no software to take unique advantage of it. I also have a tegra 3 one x and i can tell you that my wifes s4 one x is smoother than mine. The only quad core architecture that matters is the one that has software that takes advantage of it. And right now tegra zone is the only softwarestore that has that. As far a audio quality is concerned, anyone can take advantage of good audio quality. All they need is music and decent headphones.

not to mention the fact that the nexus 7 is tegra 3. that means quad core exynos processor will have a uphill climb as far as software adoption.
The few milliseconds of performance that the quad core gives means little to nothing to the general population. But if it makes you feel better, the quad core processor is better.

For the record, power doesn't equal quality. My 4S actually drives my Westone 4's and Beyerdynamic T1s slightly louder than my international S3. But the S3 is slightly cleaner and more detailed.

Noted. BTW the U.S. SGS3 doesn't use the Wolfson DAC, it uses the Audience eS305 audio processor. So if you really do care how the Audience chip sounds even though you have the Wolfson in your phone, then have at it.

nobody said power equals quality. I said it sounds great and in a totally separate sentence I said it drives most of my headphones fine. One doesnt equal the other. Because if it has a terrible d/a converter then the amplifier will amplify terrible audio. Thats kinda 101 level stuff.

Have you noticed crackling sound on the US galaxy S3?

DAC?

Does anyone have any idea what the DAC in the Nexus 4 will be? I'm really hoping for a Wolfson, but I doubt that will be what it is due to the price point. I'm really hoping for good sound quality on this phone as none of my previous Android devices have had it.

If anything I've been working on purely all nexus devices to improve the way users listen to their device and music.
I just wanted to know if anyone can be kind enough to let me know how the N10 fares in general with it's audio quality and what audio chipset does it run.
Ofcourse I've created a test dump for the N10 but I don't know anyone on my side who has an N10. I would like someone to test it since this is the best place to refer to. Rest assured, bootloop free.

In my opinion, it's pretty mediocre. It definitely didn't sound louder to me than the iPad, despite having Stereo out. Disappointing, really.

Yeah it seems majority of the Nexus devices suffer this. Infact all at this rate, considering the Nexus S was to involved without Voodoo. :crying:
I think with these newer devicesthe only way to get respectable sound is with Bluetooth or wired external speakers.
I love my ICS phone and listened to the Nexus 7 - great devices. But audio is weak.
What bothers me about the Nexus 10 audio is the speakers.
Even as a kid nothing screamed snake oil to me more than huge grills that hid tiny speaker cones.
That's what you get with Nexus 10 as well.
Behind each grill is one tiny speaker radiator at the top of the grill.
The rest of the long speaker grill is just for looks (or sales)
External speakers all the way
sound
I think it sounds fine. The speakers on it are actually descent and I have nice headphones so that works fine for me as well.
I've got a test build up for trials. Anyone want to test it before I make the thread in N10 Themes SECTION? Thanks for the feedback, helps improve certain fields.

I personally think the Nexus 10 sounds pretty good with headphones. I believe it has a Wolfson WM1811 chip.
I have it plugged in with an ATH-m50 and a Fiio E5. Tweaked with the 10-band equalizer from Poweramp, and it sounded pretty good. It's certainly not the best I've listened to (the Cowon S9 sounds better still), but it's good enough to replace my S9 simply because the Nexus is much more hassle free in general.
The sound is definitely missing something though. Not exactly sure what it is.

To me the speakers on it are the best I've heard from any tablet since its front facing and it kinda has a slight surround sound effect since there is one speaker on each side of the tablet. Also the volume is loud enough to where nobody should have a problem hearing it and if you do get a hearing aid. The volume isn't so loud you can go deaf but its loud enough to where everyone in the room should be able to hear it.
The speakers sound pretty good with a bit of EQ. CyanogenMod's DSPManager is perfect for this since you can selectively EQ only the speakers.
Headphone quality is even better. Much, much better than the Galaxy Nexus and on par with some of the best Android devices.
Well I've sent a test build to a few members already let's see how that fares with comparison to stock loudness.
But I do thank you for the feedbacks, much appreciated!

I've read here somewhere that the microphone isn't amazing quality.
I wouldn't be surprised if the N10 sound can be improved, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised listening to music, movies, etc on mine, as the sound blows away any other tablet I've used to date, blows away my 15" ASUS laptop (3 different models in our house, none of which sound as good as the stock N10). I've seen a few people complain that the size of the speaker slots is misleading, and somehow implies that the speakers are larger than they really are, as can be seen in tear-down photos. I haven't done any serious homework into this -- but I'm wondering if the elongated speaker grills actually server as vents, effectively turning the housing into a slot-vented speaker cabinet.
How do you plan (in detail) to improve the sound on this tablet? Are you going to just make it louder or actually do tweaks to improve the sound? If you are just making things lower, how do you plan on making it louder? A simple voltage increase? Or something more sophisticated?

Tweaks to improve the sound, since as you said the hardware is pretty good, louder is one thing if its needed, else controlled loudness is fine. In terms of libset, voltage increase is pushing it sounds alot more dangerous and doubt it will be tested :victory:

HTC one vs note 2 speakers

Does anybody have any first hand experience with both these phones to make a comparison?
I'm just trying to get a idea of how much better the loud speakers are compared to my note 2.

Hi, I sold my Note 2 for a HTC One. I always thought the speaker on the Note was very impressive.
BUT the HTC is WOW. Much louder and the sound quality is superb. Sounds to have a little bit of base too.
This is how all phones should be built.

No I needed a change from Samsung. I do miss the large screen and all the Smart features. I've managed to find some apps that sort that issue out though
So far I am happy with the battery life. It did a full day yesterday. I`m still unlocking the screen every 5 minutes though just to look at it
If the battery life becomes an issue I`ll install Juice Defender.
Yesterday I had 81% left by 1pm and I had it off charge at 7am.
Hope that helps.
I came from the Samsung Note II as well. With the Note II rooted and on custom rom. I say the performance of sound on the Note II was louder and probably slightly better than the HTC One. I was on Perseus kernel with Noozide on the Note II. I felt the bass pumping on the Note II, whereas the One did not. Also I feel the HTC one just isn't loud with the two speakers.
I haven't found any tweaks to get the volume louder on the HTC one yet... Hopefully someone can pull off a hack to get higher db.

Didn't really see an improvement after puttin in the files. Maybe it's just me, or a placebo.

did that kernel add to the speakers? When I had my note 2 the speakers were horribly tinny and quiet. Not as bad as the nexus 4's though.

Hi, I sold my Note 2 for a HTC One. I always thought the speaker on the Note was very impressive.
BUT the HTC is WOW. Much louder and the sound quality is superb. Sounds to have a little bit of base too.
This is how all phones should be built.

I respectfully disagree. The Note 2 rear speaker is damn loud, and I think from a decibel standpoint its about the same, quality though, the HTC wins out. My wife has a Note 2, I have a One and an S4 and I can honestly as after all the rave reviews of the HTC's "loud speaker" I was disappointed. It sounds wonderful yes, but its not "turn it down halfway because its so loud" like some of the professional reviewers say.
Im sure mine was loud when i first got it. Seems to me the new firmware reduced the volume.

I had a Note 2 on Sprint and then On AT&T. I left my Note 2 to get the One and I'm thoroughly impressed. Honestly, even though my Note's were rooted with custom kernels, they just weren't as sharp in the sound department. They were loud, but had a very tinny sound at high volume. The front facing speakers on the One really do the commercials justice. They are far clearer, and sound better than ANY other phone I've had.

Coming from a Note 2 and working with co-workers with a Note 2 I find this very hard to believe. I also tried this kernel and almost didn't hear any difference...before the note speaker sounded very tinny and afterwards it sounded a little less tinny. According to Samsung the speaker was not broken and within production tolerance. The lousy (quality and volume) speaker was one of the reasons to switch to a One and I didn't regret it one minute..
had the note 2 previously. The note 2 does sound loud when its turned over on its face but mine was rarely on its face, still sounded pretty loud though.
The One sounds very loud and because the speakers are on the face its loud all the time, The quality is also far far far better than the note. It wont replace a portable speaker though, understandably there isn't much bass(more than the note though).
