Rooting Gingerbread 2.3 - EVO 4G General

For those of you who unrooted and installed the Gingerbread OTA update, here's how to root it by unrooting to 2.2 then using the regular 2.2 root method.
You need to go back to 2.2 for now which isn't a big deal and takes 5 minutes.

Who said that would happen. Consensus was that it was going to be sense 1.0 since we got the april leak. And htc never said anything about a sense ui upgrade. Why dont you pick one of the many sense 2.1 roms availible. All are smooth and great bases for future roms.

well since the sense sdk is coming, hopefully itll make the newer sense roms more stable

ok, so if the bootloader is still locked(which was predicted that htc's policy wasnt retro active). Did they at least "not" patch the rageagainstthecage exploit? If they did that sucks(well, it sucks for the noobs that unrooted to get it at least, instead of waiting an hour later).Hopefully the exploit still works for GB.

Anyone tried ginger break?

Gingerbreak
I've already tried every method on 2.3, Z4root doesn't work, Vision root doesn't work, Gingerbreak doesn't work, hence why you can still root it by going back to 2.2 RUU. For now, this will get most people rooted. not sure about the errors some people are getting yet.

I am getting the error as well.

Nobody is asking for your sympathy, fag stick! Why don't you hold down the button on the top of your EVO. When the screen turns black, just walk away so the actual professionals do what no one has ever accomplished. Innovation is what pays the rent and the rent is just too damn high. Stain me.

Anyone still on 1.5?
Currently still running AOSP 1.6, but going to hop over to Darchdroid, once Drachstar has fixed a few minor issues.

I'm on Regaw's latest ROM. Running smooth and skippy.

Do you have superuser whitelist installed? The only way to lose root is to flash the official HTC/Sprint RUU. Es was updated in 2.1, so it may just be a difference in version. I don't believe Es will request root anyway, try downloading Root Explorer. The quickest way to check if you have root is to run a terminal emulator and type su.

Could be worse. Those 11 could have started threads *****ing and moaning as to why they don't have root and for someone to fix it now.
I only recall one thread asking about root but wasn't complaining.
UR so funny.
I took the plunge when the first leak came out after seeing ALL the posts about what if and why for's.
I stated then that I would run the RUU and then try to root.
I tried three (3) ways and it didn't work.
I posted the results HUGE and big for those asking why and when.
I took one for the TEAM so to speak and am willing to wait for a new root without crying about it.
Push comes to shove I buy a new phone if I need it that bad.
So the number of 11 doesn't really seem all that out of line as others did in fact run the RUU before anyone made an effort to actually attempt it and have verifiable results.

Okay this is hard for some people to understand but if you got two phones all to yourself and you don't care what happens to one. It would be of great benefit to the community if you leave one unrooted so when someone needs a beta tester to test whether or not a new root procedure works I'm here to help them beta test the procedure. Plus I wanted to test a couple things out that could only be done if I flashed the 2.1 ruu not to be confused with rom.

why do people make such a big deal about the ones who update and lose root? If you didn't update and lose root then good for you but some people like to try the official update before the chefs update and customize, i for one can't blame them. We all paid for these phones, some more then others and if they want to upgrade then let them. None of the Froyo ROMs out there have 4g, which I use every day.
I'll probably wait a couple of days to see if somebody posts a rooted version, and if not, I may un-root for the stock update. But then if I lose root, I also lose Titanium Backup, so I'd have to set everything up from scratch, which I hate.

I predict we won't get the OTA update if we're rooted, and if we are it will most likely wipe out root access. I'm gonna need to reinstall that stupid amazonmp3 apk and unroot so I can get this stupid update.

most ROMs disable OTA updates.
and no way would I revert back to stock until it's confirmed that the official 2.2 doesn't somehow break root access.
Give the Devs until Thursday. and they will have the OTA with root to flash on our phones (if you want it). I, personally, won't go back to stock after tasting CM goodness!

No radio update needed, the nbh file will take care of all of that.
Just copy this to the root of your SD card, boot into the bootloader (vol down + power), hit apply update and let it do it's thing.
DON'T restore anything through TiBa or mybackup until AFTER you've received the ota update. Should take about a day or two of the phone being on and connected to 3G.

The MT3G just doesn't have enough ram to support an OS this large. CM6 is good but still way slower than oem 1.6 w/androot and overclock.
I rooted a few months back by using sappimg and flashrec, then installed CM5 with mediocre results. I got sick of the instability and unrooted. Then I rooted the stock 1.6 w/universal androot, overclocked it, and left it alone for a while.
A week or so ago I backed up my oem 1.6 w/root, then I flashed CM6. 3 or 4 days ago I backed up my CM6 and went back to my nandroid of oem1.6 w/root. This time I ditched CM due to crazy bad battery life and the phone running way hot. I suspected it would have done better with compcache disable but I got sick of screwing with it.
This morning I nandroided back to CM6 to screw around with it some more, (wanted to disable compcache and give it another shot) but just now I'm going back to the oem donut again because froyo is inherently slow on a phone with this little ram, although disabling compcache helped a bit. Also the gallery is too slow to use.
Does that make more sense? Basically I'm indecisive and keep switching back and forth, lol.

Can we all start posting like this please?
OK quick question...because I am finding conflicting information on the web
All agree that you cannot root Gingerbread 2.3.3 yet directly
…but….
…can you roll Gingerbread 2.3.3 back to Froyo 2.2?
Then root Froyo?
Most seem to say no you cannot roll back (including Sprint...I tried them)
But this guy is saying yes you can…(watch video and go pass his joking around at first) htcevohacks how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-gingerbread-2-3
I would like other opinion if this is doable? (and have done it) I want to root but took the ota 2.3.3 before I got around to it
...Im not sure I trust this guy know all that going on to try this and not end up bricking my phone....
I want more than one opinion before I and othet's get walked off a cliff if it is wrong
Again this is for a evo that has neve been rooted but bone stock that took the OTA update to gingerbread 2.3.3 can you roll back to Froyo, then root Froyo... or is there a big "gotya!" hiding?
Im a Network Engineer and don’t do jack on production gear (in this case my own phone till I know what's going on backwards and forwards
Even if this is just bad info out on the web a heads up warning will be nice
That article was dated January 19th. The current comments are all failures, getting Wrong Bootloader message.
This method won't work. Unfortunately, you will need to wait like the rest of us.

If you were previously rooted and your bootloader security is set to "s-off" then you can reinstall 2.2. Otherwise, you're SOL until an exploit for 2.3 can be found.

So a big fat caveat that should be up front …it all about locked or unlocked NAND(S-ON/S-OFF)…
So first question: Taking Gingerbread 2.3.3 will unroot your phone but will not relock NAND (S-ON)?
And second question :If you need to service your phone and have to put back to stock you would need to relock NAND (S-ON) as a final step to be truly, truly, stock?
Reason I ask it this
Person “A” states (like guy in video) “I unrooted and went to stock Froyo 2.2 on my evo and did OTA update to Gingerbread 2.3.3” ..(but he still can roll back because its still unlocked NAND(S-OFF)...so big woop...what the hell did he prove?)….
Person “B” states (like someone return to stock for Sprint service) “I unrooted and went to stock Froyo 2.2 on my evo and am locked NAND(S-On) so Sprint will not know”
So between Person “A” and Person “B” what the different step that gives stock Froyo 2.2 unlocked NAND(S-OFF)….and stock Froyo 2.2 locked NAND(S-ON) for service return?
