Exactly!
Archos update support is great
They even released a Update for the Gen7 (Archos 5 Internet Tablet) with Android Donut (1.6) in April '11
This device has released in spring 2009!
2 and a half years of updates Considering by this we'll get updates till summer 2013 (At least)

I gave up hope, sold my A101 and bought me an Acer Iconia A500.
There is only one thing which I am missing from the Archos and that's the supported videocodecs of the A101.
Now being changed to the Acer, I won't ever buy an Archos again. Not for it being a worse product, but because of not answering my supportquestions, only auto-reply's.
Good luck to you all !

The World need more optimists...

I have had no issues with archo support. They replied with in 2 days of my question( not auto reply). also the device works great as is. I just rooted and that was it. I don't run urk i just did some simple mods like move the buttons to notification and a custom boot animation. other than that my tab works fabulous. The only thing that archos needs to fix is the random reboot while sleeping thing but even that isn't enough to make me pay over $500 for a tablet.
And yes i think we will get more updates. I think that they (Archos) may be waiting for Ice cream sandwich to be released, since the honeycomb source code seems to be a highly guarded secret. but hey i am willing to wait and see, and then if after ICS gets released we don't get a update soon i may be swayed to buy something else.

Quite frankly I'm almost at the point of ditching my A101. I love it dearly, however these last few weeks the touch screen has turned to being the most awkward thing I have ever used, it won't respond to anything for a few minutes, then be great after that. This could be a software issue, but either way it's something that didn't used to happen and quite frankly just shouldn't happen.
Also, honeycomb tablets are *&%^ing all over the Archos. If the 7-inch Acer iconia turns out to be good, I'm on it as soon as I can be.

Hope not but who knows

I'm glad you're happy with your tab. When I bought my A70 in December I kinda worked out I was paying 40% for 85% of the functionality.
As regards the Samsung team, you obviously missed the fun SGS owners enjoyed waiting for the upgrades from Eclair to GB.
So I have an A 70, a SGS and as of last week an SGS 2. I love them all. They will all be obselete within a year. The A 70 is getting old, but I have been at IT long enough to know that in reality I use the mobile devices for

Random other stuff
I smile when I read about devices only delivering half the functionality they should and and the like. You are buying a nascent technology.
So cheers to everyone who actually likes the Archos and thanks Sauron.

The SGS is the I9000 model right ?
And if I watched at the samfirmware site the official Android Froyo is available for this model since at least august 2010 and official Gingerbread 2.3.3 since at least march 2011, so before it was available for the SGT !!!
So may be you don't know how to use kies or where to find the information... ^^

Most of those initial releases were unofficial internal ones full of bugs. Took ages to get a stable 2.2 rom. Head over to the 19000 forum and see all the *****ing about slow samsung updates.
Kies only updates when your local phone carrier adopts a new rom, so I didnt use it much.
Look I got the phone last July and the software was fairly horrific. Huge lags due to the rfs filesystem and software. Took about 6 months before official roms were decent. Up until then, to have a good experience you needed to root/lagfix/use custom rom.
Cyanogenmod 7 final version is either available for the I9000 for "some times" already.

I wish I could Browsing, Email, Browsing XDA to see tweaks, mods and dev with my Archos 70IT but couln't as most of the time I can't use wireless functionality. None of my Bluetooth devices (headset (3 different models) or keyboard can connect to the Archos when I never had any problems with the SGT. HDMI "browsing" is simply SUPER with clone display ! Can you say the same thing with the Archos ???
What about pluging USB stick or HDD with the USB Host ??? ^^

I don't care is my device will be obselete within a year or not as I'm sure I can use it for SOME years, just as I used my Palm Lifedrive for over ten years. THIS device is quite obsolete but at least I really used it and it was worth the buying.
The Archos 70IT was obselete from the first day it came out and it came out before the Samsung Galaxy Tab was available, and it was truely functional "out-of-the-box" from the very first day.

As I said in my post, I bought the Archos becuase on balance I thought it was much better value for money at the time than the alternatives. Sure there is better value now - look at the way the AUS price for the tab was slashed recently to 299 aus dollars for the 3g one.
Look at the XDA Galaxy Tab section for the alternative firmware as opposed to the gen8 Archos... ^^
I don't deny the work made by Sauron, but I wished I could flash my A70IT just as with the Samsung Galaxy (of any kind) and just revert back if I don't like the alternative firmwares !

I don't own a SGS, so I can't tell but at least you have an fair alternative and you can revert back to original if you don't like it while this is mostly impossible with Archos, specially with official firmwares...
Are you stubborn as most Archos owners are ???
I don't know any SGT owners ever been abandoned by Samsung even after a bricked devices and even after a custom ROM failure. Samsung repairs their devices according to the warranty and including phone carrier versions !!!

That is just rubbish. Standard return instructions for a bricked phone are pretend you were upgrading the firmware with Kies and you dont know what happened. Never came across a case where they replaced a bricked phone where they were told it was bricked.
Oh and in the SGS II they have a kernel flashing counter where the phone records when you flach a new kernel. Nice little warning triangle left on the phone when you do so. Apparently you can reset the counter, but this trigers another counter reset.
You are not being realistic about warranty cover.
I own about 10 Netbooks/laptops/tablet PC and even a Desktop for productivity, so I just wanted to use my Tab for fun : browsing, emailing, media and eBooks Reading. Unfortunatly I can't use my Archos for this purpose as it is useless except to hold my paper books or as a luxuary coaster...
I built myself an Android-x86 Froyo for my Acer 1825ptz Tablet PC, and it's working pretty fine. Even wireless connectivity is more reliable and more stable than with the Archos. LOL

What gives with the lack of updates???

So i was reading an article in regards to new tabs coming out this year (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Rivals-to-the-iPad-Say-This-nytimes-3459496839.html?x=0) and there was a paragraph that read as follows:
"Devices can already run Android 2.3, known as Gingerbread, and Android 3.0, known as Honeycomb, is scheduled to be available this year. Andy Rubin, vice president for engineering at Google, showed a prototype of a Motorola tablet running the operating system at a conference in December."
Am i missing something? What tabs are running 2.3? My T-Mobile tab sure isn't and still no word on an update, and if 3.0 will be coming out soon what is the point of releasing or updating to 2.3?
Very aggravating.....
You bought a tab with 2.2 right? Then what are you crying for. Nobody said the tab would be getting anything else. So are you buying devices for what they are? Or are you buying them for what you want them to be, because electronics don't work like that.

Yes my tab is running 2.2, all i was trying to say is that since they are mentioning that there are tabs running 2.3 and the up coming 3.0 i just wanted to know when are were going to get those updates. Yes i am happy with the way the tab runs now but if there is something out there that other tabs already run, why not expect that to be on mine.

You just answered your own question there the clue was in prototype, and if you watch the video of him doing the demo hes very careful about how and what he shows so that he does'nt encounter any problems, both the os and the tablet are prototypes and as such are'nt ready for distribution yet.
Hi,
unfortunately, HoneyComb won't be available for Tab. Samsung will only update to 2.3. Officially, HoneyComb needs dual-core processors and bigger screen size and perhaps that's the reason it won't be updated on the Tab
i don't agree with the fact that we buy electronics purely for what they are.. the potential of what it can be should be taken into consideration. The Tab is a great machine but still not exactly a tablet due to the OS. Its unfortunate that i will never be (again due to OS). i do own a Tab and it has served me well but i was kinda hoping for improvement (as all gadgets owners would).
When I buy a blender or a TV I don't expect anything other than what I get in the box. When I build a PC I don't expect the graphics card to get the new DX or OGL hrdware implamented with a firmware upgrade when the company releases info on new cards. When I buy an OS I read the features and only expect fixes, not another OS in a few months.
Why do people assume because it's a Tablet it has to morph into other things every few months? Samsung didn't shut down their Tablet R&D when they released the SGT. No, they took what worked and continued to add to it. OF course they are going to stop putting new s#!t on there old hardware and push their new hardware with it as feature. Why? Becasue Average Joe doesn't understand the hardware difference but tell them it's got a whole "new" OS and throw in a catch phrase like "multi core" and "Multi Task" and *Bam!* sales.
It's not a new way of doing business. It's just a new platform to do it on.
Incorrect the product testing guy at Google already said there's no such requirements for3. 0

You can buy electronics for any reason you'd like but if don't buy it for what it is, you WILL be disappointed at some point. That is an absolutely certainty. How about that iPad? Think there's any technical reason it couldn't run a Flash player? All those people who bought an iPad expecting Jobs to eventually relent and allow Flash are pretty disappointed right about now because there's absolutely no technical reason it couldn't work and yet it doesn't and, most likely, never will. Samsung doesn't need to ever do anything with the Tab again and I would be happy with what it does because it meets my needs. That's why I bought it. I kind of doubt that "needs dual-core..." stuff, too. Every company annouces that nonsense and then we find out six months later that the latest and greatest runs just fine on year old hardware when you hack around the arbitrary checks that stop it from running.

Samsung: No Honeycomb for Galaxy Tab.

CLARIFICATION: SamFirmware.com is NOT directly affiliated with Samsung Corp., but have links with them apparently (which explains how the ROMs leak).

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab will launch with FroYo (Android 2.2) and eventually be upgraded to Gingerbread (maybe Android 3.0), but Samsung said Honeycomb was for a different kind of tablet experience."
“Moving forward with Honeycomb, that will be used in the next generation tablet as it is specifically optimized for different type of tablet, and will be used on another product only.”

I trust Samfirmwares as far as I can throw a fat kid. Bout 2 inches.
I dont see an abysmal difference between 2.2, 2.3 ... 3.0, everything works pretty much the same. the layout of 3.0 may not be the best for a 7inch tablet anyways... perhaps google will meet us halfway and release something that is not 3.0 but will run apps made for 3.0 or something like that. if we never get 3.0 its not going to be a big deal for me, maybe I am on a different situation because I just got it, and most of you have had it for while. and I could get the xoom if 3.0 was that big of a deal but I've played with the xoom and its just too big for me, I like the portability of the galaxy tab and that is more imporant that having honeycomb.

How many devices are out there right now with ROMs on them that aren't official or haven't even been released?
Crummy reason to give up the best available tablet on the market today. (That's called an opinion, and I'm entitled to mine)
I'm fairly confident that at some stage we will have fully functional and stable honeycomb on our tabs. Does it really matter if it's not an official Samsung release?
After all, if all we're interested in is getting official updates from vendor sources then there's little or no point being on these forums.
Have faith in the developers here, in my opinion they provide more reliable roms than the vendors!
just one question, what the hell do you guys expect? if somebody port honeycomb to the tab we will have it. but whats the point? what you are actual missing on your tab? why need sooo much honeycomb? i guess in 95% of all cases its just the childish "must have" instinct like me....
so stay calm, lets enjoy our tab and stop to blame samsung....
I did quite trust the dev here, more than a samsung, but I am disappointed to have paid a very expensive tablet and end samsung not take care of customers, but many want our money !!!

Maybe because some apps will only work on honeycomb.
Can anyone here honestly say that they bought there Tab because Samsung said that it would get Honeycomb? I don't recall Samsung ever officially saying anything of the sort personally, though I stand ready to be corrected!
Yes, it would be really nice to get an official Honeycomb ROM, but when I bought my Tab I knew it was coming with Froyo and I knew that Samsungs track record in the past with respect to new Android versions wasn't great.
If we get Gingerbread out of Samsung, I'd say that was a win personally.

Erhhh, you're coming a bit late to the party here!
a) This is based on the work of spacemoose1 from these forums for CDMA Tabs.
b) Many people here have flashed it or tried flashing it.
c) At best, it can be considered a very early alpha - it isn't in a state where you could remotely use it as a daily driver!

Oh man, is this it? 6/23?
I've had my Iconia for a day (upgrade from Advent Vega). It's awesome, but I miss being able to use my Xbox controller for ye olde sega/nes/psx games.
Very much looking forward to 'official' xbox pad support, and hoping it brings analogue stick functionality with it (I'm guessing it does - right now, I only get dpad/button/triggers working on the Vega).
The 23rd... an agonising 11 days.
yeah I can't wait and I really think why it took so long is cause Acer had to add things to improve a500s quality with honeycomb, more than motorola and Asus had to.
I think many, many people are thinking the 3.1 update is going to be the holy grail of Android.
I, for one, will be waiting to update - you lot can be the 'first adopters' and get all the bugs, I'll wait for 3.101.
3.1 will not be the all-fix thing you think it'll be.
3.1 the holy grail !!!
I didn't heard about something after 3.1... such as a 3.x or 4.0 ... what the future of Android ?
Afer 3.1? Ice Cream Sandwich. It is the unifying firmware to run both phone and tablets and anything in between. The holy grail of a smartphone OS. After that? Ice Cream Sandwich 2.0. Etc..

To be honest, I don't think so..
I think there will plenty of bugs in 3.1 - this forum will be FULL of posts about gps not working after update, or wifi, or mSD card, or whatever.
3.1.001 will be out before the end of August to address those faults.

Why do you write such nonsense?
the port which is already made, which is not even perfect.. and its still pretty good..
fast browsing is the major i think for this release..
launcher less laggy
wifi, gps etc.. works pretty ok i think for a asus port..
so please.. false arguments.. 3.1 is already on our device in a unofficial port, and initial reports are good (if you please ignore media playback)
the official 3.1 can only be better, if acer do just as good!!
but we seem to have to wait alot longer for the official to get out..

And what makes you think, out of all the things Acer have done (for eg. ignore all requests for unlocked loaders, ignore emails (well, ignore the first 3-7 emails), they'll make 3.1 'better' than it is.
EVERY time there's been an update from Acer, there are a flood of posts here about something not working after the update - why do you think 3.1 will be any different?
And, to paraphrase you - initial reports are good, but only if you ignore something that's bad.. and you really think that's a logical statement?
1940 - 1945 were lovely years to be alive, if you ignore that silly war thing.
3.1 is very likely to be better than 3.0 - if only because they've managed to fix 3.0's bugs (like ANY update).
I just think it'll come with it's own slew of both new and old-unfixed bugs, and this forum will once again be filled with posts about xx not working, or yy force closes when it didn't before, etc.
Lets face it, there's been, what?, 3 or 5 Acer download updates this year, all supposedly fixing something found wrong in the previous releases..
3.1 will have a host of bugs, and there'll be updates for it within 4 to 6 weeks of its release.. I've just said I'll be waiting for those updates, rather than bow down and praise the holy 3.1.
That's my opinion of the 3.1 release, you have no right to call it nonsense when it's based on the number of updates released to 3.0 this year.

you are in a developer forum, with all the custom roms for any model you can think of (almost).. so wtf would you care about what Acer can deliver of updates, if xda have the suppport required to get your tablet working..
we can only be so lucky that nvidia tegra2 is getting so popular and that platforms are almost 100% compatible.
i only ask acer to open the kernel source, so kernel developers can add the functionality missing.
but updates from acer? i dont need updates so often.. we need xda forums and more supporting the developer community..
if you can say "fanboy", you should associate that with nvida tegra2, and not the vendor here.. i chose Acer because of the hardware, not because of the company and its reputation.
Who wants a usb less tablet, if you get one with both sockets? (here i mean asus/motorola)

It usually takes months if not years for them to generally fix major bugs on their devices. Same for pushing firmware updates...
Sad but this is how it is.

No, we may not see 3.2 officially from samsung this month, but i bet we see a leak of it before the end of august.
Xoom is also Google's flagship HC tablet so obviously they'll always get the latest updates first. Give it time. Maybe we'll have our 3.2 by the time ICS is out
Wait for Touchwiz before Android 3.2

Samsung is doing amazing job in hardware development. They really do but for software support the company simply s*cks.
For example Galaxy S is almost a year and a half old. This device sold more than 10 million units worldwide is one of the most successful smartphone ever and believe it or not it's still waiting to get Gingerbread.
And this is only one example. Almost every Samsung Android phone out there is suffering the same issue. Actually all with the exceptions of Nexus S and Nexus S 4G and that because Google itself is handling the software and pushing updates on those devices.
To make things worst Samsung will push the TouchWiz UI very soon. Which means now they have to make sure Touch UI is compatible with the latest Android version which take even more time. They always take their time to ensure compatibility with their stupid TouchWiz and they ALWAYS end up with extremely buggy results.
As for an early leak, what is the point of getting a beta software to an already buggy device?
If for any reason you believe that Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be an exception for Samsung, please feel free to share. I really like to know it.

I would disagree somewhat. The Galaxy S has been upgraded to Gingerbread on European versions of the phone. While updates for phones in the past have been lagging I would view that Samsung has taken a new approach as of late. The majority of the phones released around the same time period as the Galaxy S line have not received the Gingerbread update either. I would respond to you and ask for another cell phone manufacturer who is doing it better? Also besides zoom to fit (which spare parts will fix) there's not much benefit of 3.2 for us. The update adds zoom to fit, finally enables SD cards on the Xoom, and is more optimized to fit on 7" tablets i.e. 7-inch Huawei MediaPad.
As for Touchwiz I felt V3 was in need of much work (it does appear to be revamped a tad and smoother on the latest Fascinate GB leak) however V4 on the SGII has me sold on it being the default launcher on my phone. It is butter smooth and I love how it is laid out. If you were to poll the majority of Android users on XDA I would wager over 75% are unhappy with their stock manufacturer's launcher. I am looking forward to what Samsung will bring to the table.
I myself believe that Honeycomb is still very "beta-ish" in its current state. It was rushed and is extremely buggy. I think releasing the source code would help immensely as devs could iron out bugs (which they nicely do for Google now on the phone side). However, I do not believe it will be released before a transition into Ice Cream Sandwich.

It's not just about smaller screen tablets. It brings some small bug fixes also:
There is no lag on up side down home screen. Portrait is also better but not much.
Browser seems a little faster and typing a message on XDA doesn't lag as bad as it did on 3.1
I was also planning to buy SGT, but now I'm not sure anymore. I don't want to wait for updates. In this regard, the US Xoom is the best tablet. Only downside is that the US 3G version doesn't work in Europe and i want a tablet with 3G connectivity.
I got the update(wifi Only). Any one have a clue how to access it? Or make Sgt use it? The SD card i mean..lol
There isn't a 3.2 update for Galaxy Tab, and there is no SD card either. Troll somewhere else
I've been a forum reader/poster for over 20 years. Seen many things and read many posts. I know trolls and I know funny.
It's safe to say that the threads that I've read on the XDA forums have the most people with lack of sense of humor than any I've been a part of.
Why is that?
I didn't think it was funny... It was a clear troll post.
Could the 10.1 run 3.2 from the Zoom, or does it have to be made specifically for the Samsung 10.1?
Because supposedly reverse landscape and portrait mode performance are improved, near regular landscape performance.
Thanks for making my point.

Android 4.0 on the A500?

Acer sucks, I wouldn't hold my breath. It's likely that we'll need a custom ROM for A500.
google released a statement saying there were no new hardware limitations, so we should be compatible.

Yup. Just a little behind schedule - and without great communication.
This is typical Acer. Lucky part is - as Android users we can choose to not rely on the hardware devs and run custom roms.
ICS should definitly be able to be placed on the A500. All Android tablets now pretty much have the same hardware, the Tegra 2 chipset. If no ICS for the A500, I would assume no ICS for any Tegra 2 device. Which I believe 100% will not be the case.
And hopefully when ICS releases, they will release the source code so we can have AOSP ROMS. Then it wont matter whether Acer releases an official ROM because devs can build from AOSP and throw in the necessary code for the specific hardware of the A500.
Finally got the A500
I have been reading this user group comments for weeks now to gain as much info about the A500 as possible and after reading comments both good and bad, I decided to go out and buy.
I really love this device. It is better than I anticipated. It came with 3.01, however Acer upgraded the firmware over the weekend first to 3.1 and then to 3.2, so I am very impressed, (after having Samsung devices for 18 months and receiving no updates at all, still on 2.2).
I am very glad this U.G. exists as many of my questions have already come to the fore, thanks for that. The only problem is that my wife has threatened to throw the device out the window if I dont stop fiddling with the A500 and show her some attention as well.
There has been talk about Ice Cream Sandwich running on the A500, does anyone know what is different about android 4.0 compared to 3.2?

My girlfriend makes the same threats Just Google 'Ice Cream Sandwich features' for some more info. They haven't released a whole lot of info yet, but in a nutshell it will be a a uniform operating system that will run on phones and tablets instead of 2 different OS. Some cool new features have been discussed, but I have a feeling there's a lot we won't find out about until it gets released (October/November last I heard).
It is officialy stated that tegra 2 devices wil be given ICS update.

Yea, I got myself an A100 and gave her my A500(bought her a logitech bluetooth keyboard to go with it). So I get the smaller lighter "nimbler" device. She got the bigger thicker device so she gets a stronger grip.
All kidding aside, tablets do make excellent platforms for watching porn with your partner. It even has dual cameras in case you want to make your own too.

I consider everything rumor and speculation until it actually happens, even when it comes from companies themselves. But to date, we've been told that ICS is a merging of the phone and tablet OS. That in and of itself should allow us the luxury of surmising that this OS should work on all if not most devices currently running Gingerbread and Honeycomb at the very least.
It will be of course up to manufacturers to take the time to port it to their past devices, something not very many companies are ever willing to do since it doesn't really add any physical value (for them) to the product but I would think the current tablet providers would essentially get the update to their products as quickly as they can considering 1. they don't have a multitude of variants on the market and 2. they still have lots on store shelves etc. so it would indeed add physical value to their product - unlike for example, expecting HTC to update their Mytouch 4G or Samsung to update their Galaxy I US carrier line which have been on the market for almost a year.
Don't believe any rumors you hear and remember to take everything right now as speculation and with a grain of salt. Acer could very well today say they will update and a month or 2 after it's out tell us it won't/can't be done. Such is the way of tech.
I think it will come to the A500. Maybe not as quickly as it does to the Tab 10.1 or Transformer, but not too long afterwards. Acer has proven themselves to at the very least be consistent with their updates if albeit slow (for some), and so I'll take my positives where I can. I'm fine with slow and steady.
