Tegra 2 HW accelerated multi codec video player - Acer Iconia A500

When Playing HD video (using rockplayer) the video player cannot keep up playing HD (SD is OK) and eventually it freezes. I am assuming that i need a videoplayer that will use the tegra 2 acceleration. This videoplayer needs to support most of the common HD video formats. does anyone know of one??
Thanks

even honeycomb is not fully optimized for tegra 2 acceleration I think we need to wait sometime to see the truely power of tegra 2
buy honestly I think that tegra is for gaming, since there is a very bad support for decode High Quality profiles videos

[Q] Tegra 2 HD playback issues?

I've read a few reviews of the Xoom and now the Transformer that mention issues playing back 720p or higher HD video. Stuttering, etc. Is there any truth to this? Flash HD video I know stutters but honestly it skips on my Core2Duo PC. I'm just referring to standard video files I might load from my microSD card.
Thanks in advance.
Just got mine today.
I put a 720p MKV of a tv show and used RockPlayer.
It was not pretty in either hardware or software decode mode.
You have to check that profile those HD videos are using.
Tegra 2 can decode 720p high and 1080p baseline or main (not sure here), the problem is that Honeycomb is not fully optimized yet to use all Tegra 2 acceleration features.
I think that if you re-encode those HD videos to baseline profile, they should run smooth.
There will be an upgrade from Adobe for flash to hardware accelerate 720p videos on these mobile SoC, but it needs Honeycomb 3.1, it's still not available yet.
So is the problem honeycomb or is it the Tegra 2? I can live with it being Honeycomb but I don't want to buy weak hardware.
Supposedly, MoboPlayer and VitalPlayer are better than RockPlayer.
Have you guys tried HD videos using either?

it's honeycomb.
Can you guys run xda developers site using the stock browser? Go to the forums section and see if it scrolls without lag.
Thanks

This. Mobo Player runs 720p mkv files with subs flawlessly. Now if only I could customize the bottom dock to go away.

Which version do we use?
Hi Jocelyn,
I don't know what mkv files you are trying to play, but either in software or hardware mode they suck for me. I watch Naruto Anime and its horrible using moboplayer. I don't discredit moboplayer devs as they have come up with the only player on the android market that works for most files, but mob do not work smoothly. As for other file types, they work flawlessly. I have converted StarTrek and DespicableMe and they play beautifully without lag or skipping.

I'm using 1.2 and watching Steins;Gate right now. All the mkv files I watch came that way and have never been converted by me.

Have you guys tried the optimized codec pack for Moboplayer?
Tegra 2 is suppose to use ARM V7 VFPv3 (right?).
Its not a honeycomb issue. Its a tegra 2 issue and it is not a software issue its hardware. H.264 does not work good or at all. You have to use MPEG4. I used a 720p video that plays great on my ipad 2 and had to convert to mpeg4. I tried to get good quality from MPEG4 and it increased the file size from 5.6 to 9 gigs. I swore to never buy a tegra 2 device again after testing other tegra 2 tablet & phone but I keep getting sucked back in by the hype. I hate apple but I have nothing but good things to say about the ipad 2. Everything just works and its way way faster.

And this one plays without stuttering and lag? What's the bitrate? Almost all of the series I have are in 720p with [email protected] and bitrate around 4mbps. Most of them aren't even downloadable at 1080p so I don't mind if these 720p are just working fine.

This is what confuses me, I keep hearing it's honeycomb (and hence s/w issue which should be fixable by s/w udpate) and then I hear it's Tegra 2 issue (and hence h/w issue which can only be fixed with Tegra 3 device).
If it is Tegra 2 issue, I am leaning towards canceling my order and waiting for Tegra3. I have a lot of videos which are H264 720p Hi profile that I was hoping to watch on the TF.
I currently have a SGT which will tide me over....
What I would like is some confirmation that is indeed h/w issue....

Is there a good Handbrake profile available for the Transformer?
Its a shame that the Archos 101 plays 720p mkvs just fine and the tegra 2 sucks at it, hope this will be fixed soon!
btw. here is a preset for Handbrake, rename to .plist:
This is a duplicate thread to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1053125
Another user posted a Handbrake profile in that thread to get your mp4/mkv to play smoothly on the stock Honeycomb build (assuming it's software related). The only downside to this profile is that it will double your file size since it's baseline and uses less compression.
As for the hardware vs software issue, we should know soon assuming Google releases HC 3.1 at the Google I/O conference May 10th.

[Q] Video playback - compared to Archos

Ok, maybe I'm missing something but I keep reading on here about a) tegra2 not good at HD playback and the Asus not playing 720p MKV's very well at all (or having to reencode)
I know Archos 101 tablet doesnt run a tegra cpu (has the arguebly inferior Cortex A8) but yet it can play most HD formats with no problem at all. I think the video player app is pretty well coded... no idea why noone else has come up with an app as good as that (if indeed it is the app playing a big part in being able to play the video smoothly)
I'm considering upgrading from my a101 to the transformer as the memory /OS /screen of the Archos is pretty bad compared to the Asus. But the video thing is making me frustrated (it seems its not just an Asus thing, Acer having same issues).
I really dont want to re-encode all my videos just to put them on the device... it just seems a silly thing to have to do just to play a 720p mkv file.
Yes I agree, Nvidia should put some effort into a videoplayer that support MKV and 720p/1080p using Tegra hardware acceleration. Every manufacturer keeps blaming Google for not delivering this, but a few of the them have solved this issue, such as Samsung and Archos. One would think that it is in Nvidias best interest to have great videoplayback on Android and not only a great game expericence...
Some time ago I had an email conversation with Rockplayer concerning support for Tegra and 720p. Rockplayer (as all the rest) use the CPU when decoding MKV instead of using the GPU.
According to Rockplayer hardware acceleration for MKV would only happen if Google puts it into Android. This is a bit lazy, it seems that everyone is waiting for Google...

[Q] 3.1 eee pad transformer bugs

Hello,
In version 3.1:
Is the video problem fixed?
Can I play videos in full hd?
Do mkv files work fine?
Have a good day!

I dont think the Tegra 2 can handle high quality 1080p files so no .....
If you check around there are plenty of threads detailing what will or wont play
As advertised by asus:
"NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 1.0GHz dual-core CPU for excellent multitasking & 1080p video playback
Android 3.0 Honeycomb O.S. with Adobe® Flash® 10.2 support*2
Full QWERTY keyboard, touchpad input with Polaris® Office® for mobile productivity
16 hours*1 long battery life for all day computing with docking station
Brilliant IPS panel with ultra-wide 178⁰ viewing angle made from scratch resistant and super tough glass
One year of Unlimited ASUS WebStorage, two USB ports, SD and Micro SD card readers for easy sharing & storage expendability
3D stereo with max bass response with SRS premium sound"
So, 1080p playback is supported.
On every tablet (Tegra 2) forum there are thousands threads about this.
HD playback (specifically mkv h.264) problem is not an Android issue but Tegra 2.
Although advertised as above it has its playback limitations.
1080p only if it is BASE PROFILE
720p only if it is MAIN Profile or below.
99.9% of videos available to download are 720p. HIGH Profile and this is not decoded with hardware acceleration.
SOLUTION:
1. Reencode your videos to tegra 2 friendly format: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1102922
2. Wait and buy next gen tab with Tegra 3 inside (or equal)
3. Wait for Android 3.2 or ICS - they will have support for SOC's different than Tegra 2 (like Qualcomm). Hopefully this SOC platform will not have playback limitations of Tegra 2.

video, gaming and multitouch performance?

how is video performance? what formats and resolution does it support? does it play 1080p smoothly e.g?
and how is gaming performance on it? are heavy games like asphalt 6 or shadowgun smooth on it? is it on par with other tegra 2 tablets?
finally how is multitouch performance? how many touches does it support? no particular issues to report?
Games are smooth as buttter. yea I spelled it with three t's because its that smooth.
Video playback is not that great to me, but it can play pretty well.
Multitouch only registers 4 fingers as far as I can tell.
thx for the reply... the thrive suffers from the lack of codec support by tegra 2 right? read the most highest compression that the tegra 2 can handle is only main profile 1080p... there are no video player that can play 1080p high profile smoothly using software decode on thrive? like mx player?

Mobo players new update and codex seem to work very well. The thrives. 0011 update seems to have made significant changes to video playback as well, and just use sales rom version not ota if you want to root.

[Q] HD Video is lagging

I bought me a Lenovo Tablet yesterday and wanted to try out to play HD Videos on it.
Sadly my videos are lagging and the audio is async... I tried it with MX Player and Mobo Player, both installed the ARMv7 Codec. What i'm curious about is, that the Tegra v2 Chip should to decoding of 1080p h.264 Material in Hardware (my video was h.264 720p in a MKV Container) and both players showed me that they decode the video in software...
Is there any player that can play my mkv videos without lagging around? Or do i just need to adjust something?

Try different players but it's def not capable of 1080 and even has issues with 720p main and high profile
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
mhh but the nvidia site says something different...
so the chip itself should take care of that... maybe its just a firmware issue?
The screen is 1200x800 so there's really no way to play 1080p on it. Even 720p is going to be cropped. The only way to do 1080p is over HDMI without mirroring but apparently that isn't very smooth so 720p seems like a much better option.
Tried a reboot and/or turning Wifi off/on again? It's worked for me.
Basically the chip can do it. The Tegra 2 has some special HW IP inside that will do the decoding. Most of the Tegra 2 tables are unable to use it because the vendors are not supplying the codecs and filters that make use of the HW block. So you are somehow limited to the codecs and resolutions that are choosen by the manufacturer/Nvidia. You can't change anything and as far as I know Nvidia also isn't distributing this part open.
I'm also quiet disappointed seeing that chinese pads with Telechips MCU (ARM11 single-core) can playback almost everything up to full-HD and the Thinkpad Tablet can't.
Dice Player.
It is the ONLY working HW accelerated player in my experience....
mkv files, everything plays well on it....
