Sense 2.1 App Drawer - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, for those running or who've tried a Sense 2.1 rom - you know the app drawer, that slides in increments and has the 3 tabs at the bottom for "all, frequent, and downloaded"?
Well can someone please help me figure out how to customize the tabs. When you long-press one of the tabs, it says you can rearrange them, or drag/drop them to choose which ones to use. So I'm able to rearrange the 3 tabs easy enough, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to add different tabs??? When you pull one of the 3 tabs up into the upper screen, it says it can't be removed, but I can't figure out how to use anything other than those 3 tabs, and if it has the whole drag/drop system set up - you MUST be able to do more than just rearrange those 3...
Anyone?

Hmm, guess either it's a dumb question or nobody knows...seems like a glitch to me, as obviously you're supposed to be able to customize them but can't do so - shame, I'd love to have a couple customized tabs, i.e. "games" and "tools"
Oh well

Just checked. It definitely seems like there's more functionality planned behind it, but this specific functionality isn't implemented in Apps tray.
Try doing the same in People tabs, and you'll see what it is.

Thanks for replying - it's nice to know it's not just me
Yeah, in the contacts/people tabs, it's the same thing - it allows you to rearrange the 3 tabs, but nothing else, even though it seems like it's designed to be more customizable than just rearranging what's already there...seems weird that HTC would half-ass something like that and release something that wasn't fully functional.

You didn't try dropping off the tabs
In People, you can remove and restore the tabs, and once removed - they show up on the black screen above and are available for adding.
In Apps tray this isn't possible. I guess they just didn't think deeper

Hmm, good call - I missed it the first time because (at least on my phone) you can only remove one of the 3 tabs (the group one) and I didn't try them all initially...still, yeah lol - seems like it should be a little deeper.

Help me find a new UI

I've always thought my demands were simple, but as it turns out, I couldn't find anything I liked. What I'm looking for is a prettier UI, but much more important, snappy and 100% finger friendly. SPB Mobile Shell is nice, but I need something that will show me my tasks and appointments on the main screen. Also notifications of and easy shortcut to missed calls, voicemail, e-mails and SMS, all on the main screen. If possible, that it would disable the regular WM notifications (at the status bar and at the bottom). A launcher that would open in one click is also a must, although I don't need too many shortcuts there, about 12 would be enough.
WAD is probably the obvious choice, but it's too slow for me. I need something that won't be memory and resources hungry. Oh, and it needs to run on WM6.1
Is there anything like that out there?
Thank you very very much......
pointui, thats the way to go.
it cant supress wm notifications, but that might not even be possible
I agree with fzzyrn. After a bit of development, Pointui will be the best UI available. It's currently not that customizable but that's supposed to be available later in the future.
Try to make your own! Use I'm using Batterystatus and Ultimatelaunch for example!
Google! But, seriously sounds like you need UltimateLaunch. Google!
UltimateLaunch in combination with something other(battery status, rltoday, ...) is perfect choise.
id recommend ultimate launch and pocket informant

Wait what? You're describing exactly SPB Mobile Shell 2. Ah wait, no Task display. All the other things are taken care of, though (calendar, easy shortcuts to missed calls, voicemail, email, SMS, all on the main screen), up to 16 icon launcher (if you use a custom skin, which is the way to go), and only a couple MB of RAM taken up (at MOST, 5. normally about 2 or 3).
ALSO, as a side note, please don't create this type of thread in the Development and Hacking forum. I know it's tempting, seeing as this is the section with the mosts views/posts, but please go to the General section for this type of thread, if you even have to make one in the first place after searching.

[Idea] - LensLauncher

Maybe superfluous, but this is an idea I had for a launcher. This is inspired by the lens-eye feature from the excellent Comic Reader Mobile found on this forum.
- First picture shows standard launcher screen with lots and lots of really small icons. Small enough that hopefully all your programs fit on this screen.
- Second picture shows screen-area that is pressed.
- Third picture shows a lens that enlarges the icons close to where has been pressed.
This way any program in this launcher is 2 quick presses away. No more scrolling, no more having to leave icons out of a category because of space constraints.
Is this worthwhile?
If you want my opinion I think your idea is fast to launch items but slow to find them. I know that after some time playing with it, if you already know where it is you will launch it fast but....
I have another proposal for you . For my app I've done a couple of widgets that I call Bubbles (see attachment). The "flower" is initially closed and if you hold your finger in the middle it opens showing the icons surrounding, then draging your finger and releasing it over the desired icon you launch the app. thsi way if you are capable of grouping the apps into categories (grames, programs, comm, profiles, etc) you can access all those options with only one tap & hold .
I liked it, maybe a round lens with an animation will be more attractive
..sure, with dx 10 effects for your htc phones.

nice idea, sunra, but menus seems generally better, than today launchers...like quickmenu i.e...

Haha, it is certainly not meant to look like this! I had the look and feeling of the lens system of Comic Reader in mind.
APBilbo, your system is really nice. Our systems look alike. I want to ask you if you have any programs where you're not sure in what category you like to place them?
Nothin, could you explain why menu's seem better to you?
it is hard to explain - quick menu revised my today plugins, so i do not need to waste today space, menu is fast method with small mem usage.
i know, htc is promoting its ****ty stuff and many users got it, but there are other options, luckily....
i like claunch, tho(tap on empty space shuffles to next hm, tab"..).
claunch is nice but...
a programm launcher like the scrollbar in manila would be nice... as homeplugin...
it would be nice ... because you can insert lot of programs
8x8 icons with claunch(as line with 18 px height) is not enough?
i said, that i am using many tabs in that 1 line - tap on EMPTY space moves to another one, do i need to see ALL icons at once?
nope.
my rom contains ~60-70 applications i've added to rom, besides system ones, you know
end of OT.
keep loving your manila's, guys...
ehhh.
It's called a ZUI my friend, a Zooming User Interface
To be honest, I like it, but I think only one level of zoom should be required. Too many clicks otherwise.
Chuck in some decent kinetic scrolling for if there were too many items to fit on the screen, and you're on to a winner!
Might have a look-see to see how hard she'll be to whip up a prototype...

Prevent "stacking" of alerts and notifications - how?

I'd like to prevent my notifications and program "badges" (can't think of the proper word!) From stacking up in my notification bar at the top of the screen.
It happens when i have a lot of icons there already, ie wifi, alarm etc. Despite there being plenty of room in the middle of the bar, my notifications all stack into one icon on the extreme left hand side with the number of different programs/notifications shown as a number.
Is there a way to prevent this behaviour and force android to use all the available space on the notification bar?
I'm running Ion r2 on my Dream, although my phone has always done this, with the stock rom and JF 1.5 as well.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!
Sure, keep the number of notifications low and they won't stack. They stack when you run out of space on the bar. I know you think that there's lots of space, but if you unstack them, rest assured that there are definitely too many to fit in the space available.

Unfortunatly there is no forseen solution to this problem. I experience it as well. I think the best we can hope for are new phones with higher resolutions.

This isn't right. There is definitely space for 4 more icons, yet it stacks with just 2.

I'm on Ionr2 and I have 4 icons (email, Toggle Settings, Twidroid, USB) on the left side before the stacking starts. I'm not sure if it's gone up to 5 or not.

When the phone is in portrait mode it stacks when there are more than 2 items on the left hand side - even though there is space for more items. When in landscape, it shows all the notifications/app icons individually.
Very annoying, since the home screen will only display in portrait mode and wont auto rotate when the phone is turned.
Im convinced there must be something i can do to fix this issue!

I was talking about portrait mode. I'm pretty sure there's a fix since I do not have this problem. However, my home screen does rotate though, since I have dxTop.
Do you happen to have Quick Calendar installed? Even though Quick Calendar did not display a little icon on the top for each item in the list and only say in my "ongoing" area on the bar, when I removed it the stacking you talk about went away! It was driving me crazy too, but it seems like either Quick Calendar or the OS sees each entry, even though it doesn't have an icon and counts them.
Not sure if it will help you, but my phone has been working properly after I disabled Quick Calendar. It's a shame, I like the app. :-/

Genius! Removing Quick Calendar solved the problem - thanks!
I've put a link to this thread at the devs website - perhaps when he has solved the issue he could let us know, so we can go back to using his otherwise useful app.
Never had this type of problem, only thing is that my colors blend together because of the custom theme I am using >.<
Ok, I confirmed with the developer this morning, it is QuickCal, though I guess any other app that hides icons would also have this problem as it is a restriction in the os. Jim (the developer) works for google and plans to petition his employer to make some changes to the way the notify bar works. The os allows the developer to 'hide' notification icons, but they still take up an invisible space.
We should see an update in the next couple of days to make a nicer widget with more info and smaller font size, so this may satisfy me if the widget is decent.

Ultimate Launch

Ulitmate Launch is a Today Screen launcher that works in a similar fashion to iLauncher or SBP Pocket Plus except it is much better. I have been using it for about a week and i am sold. It is far and away the most useful today screen app and it uses very little memory. You can also set it to not load tabs until they are activated saving even more memory.
Ultimate launch allows you unlimited tabs that can either be placed at the top or at the bottom of the launcher. The tabs can be switched with finger or stylus gestures or by touching the tab you would like directly. The animation for switching between tabs is customizable and offers a cube like spinning which will no doubt keep you playing with your phone more than you already do.
Ultimate launch is also able to nest other today screen plug-ins so you can have HTC home on one tab, Weather Panel on another.
www.ultimatelaunch.de is the website to go get this fantastic application.
You can use standard XP Icons to further customize your tabs and programs.
To find Icons-
Google of course
Deviant Art - www.deviantart.com Awesome site all the way around but many artists on here sharing thier works for free.
CrystalXP - www.crystalxp.net Similart to deviant art.
This is my current set up-
http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/4/2/27/f_ULm_bb15642.gif
I have 7 tabs I have it set to spin as you can see I have it set to show all of the icons but blur the inactive icons.
Added some icons http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/111588/Ultimate-launch-icons-zip.html for you to use if you choose.
this was a good application too bad it has not been updated over a year now ... but i think spb mobile shell had used this idea to make it more useful IMHO
I loved this program on my Mogul...
Too bad he didn't take the next step and try to make it into what second today or TF-Detacher is...
Probably impossible to anyway...
I like it very, very much. Is one of the best ever.

LOL. That's pretty funny.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he was just trying to spread the word on a (at one time) great program

HTC Confirmed - Cannot change/remove lock screen icons

cliff notes: you cant change the lock screen icons or remove them at all.
so it seems the biggest gripe i have with this phone, albeit, not a huge gripe.....
you cannot pick and choose which icons show up on your lock screen tray. it reflects what you have in your unlocked home screen tray.
so if you dont want any icons in your lock screen, then you have to remove them from your homescreen tray.
i have seen many videos of other HTC phones that you can personalize the lock screen, however, on the 816 you do not even have that subfolder for lock screen personalization.
i cannot even remember the last time that i wasnt able to customize the lock screen with whatever icons i wanted to show up or none at all (which is my preference). I guess LG is a little more flexible about this one than HTC.
it has been confirmed per HTC online chat.
do keep in mind, i have no plans on rooting or running a customer rom, nor do i want to hear anyone saying i should, because you're wasting your time.
this isnt something i should have to hack my phone for or to install a launcher or separate lock screen app to do this.
this phone is limited in storage and i shouldnt have to load it up with this crap.
Thread cleaned. People argue over the stupidest stuff on the internet. Everybody take a breather and let it go.
Customization on stock HTC ROMs has gone backwards for years. I've been an HTC user for almost four years and remember when lockscreen shortcuts could be changed, but they've been unchangable separately from the tray since Sense 4. So, it's not just this phone. And I agree it is a step backwards although I think removing skins was a step backwards in customizing HTC phones too. But, I guess that's their choice.
I tried to find a way to remove them, but the only option would be to remove them from the launcher and then use a different launcher which you don't want to do.
If you had wanted to add an app without running a custom launcher or lockscreen, you could enable widgets on the lockscreen. On my HTC One, you go to Settings, Security, Enable lock screen widgets (I'm sure yours is similar). You could then add a widget to whatever app you want (assuming one is available).
Thanks for cleaning up the thread, it certainly needed it. Also thanks for actually giving an adult type response. These responses is what you should look for in a forum not the ones that were deleted from this thread.
the HTC phones I had were before sense 4, I've been on an lg phone kick lately and they've been great. But I came across the 816 phablet and it seems exactly like what I wanted. This issue is a very small one and won't cause me much frustration other than the fact that I don't want them there. But I do use them because they are there, but my preference is that they were not.
OK, this isn't really for OP because he doesn't want to root but for anyone else that wants to use different apps on the lock screen...
Install the Xtended Settings module for Xposed. That will allow you to accomplish what OP wanted. Xtended Settings along with Sense6 Toolbox will allow you to change EVERY DAMNED THING on your Desire 816. And by everything I honestly mean it. I don't think I've found a color or setting that couldn't be changed.
Make sure you have a backup before you play around with things though because there is a lot and if you just play with it and test different things you might forget how to set it back.

Nice find. I've heard of Sense 6 Toolbox but not Xtended settings. It's unfortunate that rooting is the only way to change things.
will it let me get rid of the battery saver mode notification icon?
