Can we, developers, use a pre-release on our phones?

personally .. idc if i have to get it in a private message and it isnt posted online for the world ..
I am tired of not having an unlocked NODO focus ..
just because once you apprently install NODO and dont actually backup your backup file you get bonned and cant reset it back to 7004 or 8 ..

If Instagram were to create a WP7 app, now that they have direct access to the camera, would it work on current phones? Or would these apps only run on phones that have mango installed?
What I'm basically curious about is whether we have to wait until Mango before we see apps taking advantage of the new SDK, APIs etc.

You have to wait to mango.. New apis just work on Mango

Its been said there is a MANGO BETA version to download for free... out there. But where exactly is the download file so i can download it on my htc hd7 ? If however i new how to install it though.
Someone said you need to private someone for the file and another said you msut register for it. How could so when the actual thing is free to download it aniways ? WP7 dont force anyone to register or pvt someone for the mango beta version file aniways.

p.s heres the download file for MANGO BETA for free you only get some things available. Not everything within the 500 features just yet. But here are just some what to expect. But works. Only for WP7 phones.

Who ever says to you to pvt me for the file or to register here before you download it... Is quite suspisous because like i said wp7 will never make you prvt someone for the download file and secondly you do not register just to download the file. Just so long you own a Windows phone 7 and download it for your phone.
Bingo

How do you mean we see apps taking advantage of the new SDK? what does that stands for ?
you do realise the marketplace theres allways a new app every time or at least every few days time. Are you actually talking about the whole android apps for wp7 ?

not just the android, all the iphone apps too. that's great!!
the SDK is the tool that converts the applications for free from droid/IOS to the WP7 platform, just installed Mango on my HD7 with the link you provided, it was a bit complicated I had to reset the DNS and insert a new character after the carriage return, but it works great, thanks a lot!!! I converted all of my wife's iphone apps in 10 minutes

Pretty sure that's just the developer tools... No actual ROM for installing on an actual device.... Maybe that's what people are trying to keep private as don't think MS want it out there just yet!

I can't wait for this release as I just got my hd7.

The

xda CE 2005 Project

We seem all to be waiting for a version to leak of the CE 5.0 for our devices, and at the same time we seem to think that this will not happen due to the fact our providers are going to want to ship it on new devices and not upgrade the old ones.
Well Mwang put me in the mood to do some searching and this is what I found.
Because Windows CE is in components, you can create a custom version of the OS that includes exactly the elements your particular device requires—no more and no less. Using the Windows CE development tool called Platform Builder, you can create a customized version of the OS, called an "image," that you then download onto your device hardware for debugging. If your hardware is not available yet, you can run your image and debug your applications on the included x86 emulator. That allows the end-user application developer and the low-level system software developer to work in parallel on the same project.

Well it seems that you can download a 120 days trial version which would mean you would have to flash your device in 120 days.
Windows CE Evaluation Version
Windows CE integrates reliable real-time capabilities with advanced Windows technologies to rapidly build a wide range of innovative, small-footprint devices. The evaluation version is a 120-day trial version of Windows CE, valid from the day of installation. The CD and DVD versions include a copy of Microsoft eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 Service Pack 4. The Evaluation Edition (download) requires you to download eMbedded Visual C++ separately.

Does this work for you gues ?
I tried this a while back.
Its not as easy as it sounds, firstly you have to correctly setup all the drivers for the hardware.
I wouldnt garantee that it has stuff like the phone apps ready to be compiled in either.
lastly, you have to make it into the correct format for the installer prog, I dont know if the package will output a himaupload.exe compatible rom.
Let me know how you guys do though, it would be nice to compile our own OS!
It's installing on my computer  i want it on my PPC
Well I found a 30 min tutorial on the platform builder and it looks like a lot of the stuff is around (Wifi), What we will miss is the camrea app, but hell its a start.
Ps cant find that link anymore, and the posted link works great.

Im sure it's a 120 days from the day you install it on your Desktop PC :?
definatly not as easy as you think!
i had the older version and i made some images for X86 machines (to make them thin clients)
you need every driver for the device that it will be installed on so theres alot more required than just the platform builder,
check it out anyway, its still fun to use and you can make custom CE's for old PII machines (routers, thin clients etc)
Well Bosjo, would that not give you 119 days to post a BA Rom?
@MDAIIIUser
Well i dont know, but Im guessing that the ROM itself will expire 120 after Desktop installation
@bosjo
Well you better hurry up and do good documentation so that I can rebuild your posted rom in 118 days.
@MDAIIIUser
Ha ha ha, well don't get your hopes up, Im just a plumber that bought a BA to save some time and get projects more organized........... Well that what just to be a laughf, this device has eaten every spare second I have had since the day i bought it, and it's still crappy...............
What? You mean you can use it as a phone, thought it was only good for the pocket solitair, how did you do it? and can I read it on wiki?
You see I am True born again MDAIIIUser and
"I haveth faith in thou"
I've pu the windows CE 5.0 installer in the upload folder
Good job you got this , see your pm
Hmmm... well, if someone can create a ROM that won't expire or brick my device, I'm willing to help with testing...
Let me know if you need me...
hehe. Its impossible to create WM2005 from the stuff offered with the trial WinCE 5.0 Platform builder.
Hint: WM5 has version 5.1. PB offers 5.0
im wondering.. where would you get ALL the drivers from? im sure HTC will not be willing to help us here..
@Manich
I truly respect your post and I am very much aware of not having your knowlege, insight, understanding, hacking competence.
That is why I am amember of this forum, to learn from people like yourself in order to try and get the best for my device. To share what I have learnt with others (I use wiki for that).
So please, please share with us a better idea of how we can get 2005 on a BA. It would save me a lot of time searching on the net, uploading sdk that are of no use as well as moving files on the ftp.
A "it cant be done answer" I could accept if it came from somebody else without your knowlege and I remember reading that somebody wrote something along the lines if it can run it can be cracked (smile).
With alll due respect
MDAIIIUser
Generally it cannot be done as you don't have a board support package for BA or other compatible platform. With lots of hacking and reverse engeneering you can write all drivers and all applications absent from Platform Builder (like cprog, SMS client, SIM toolkit, etc), but it would be only a waste of time. It would take as much time and would be as useless as making a Linux for BA. Better buy a device that originally ships with OS you want.
The only hope for getting WM5 on BA is that some person from MS would offer it or someone would get a device with such a ROM. Even a locked device with a signed ROM would help.

gmm 3.2.0 cab
I don't know why google makes it such a pain in the balls to get gmm cabs but here it is.
thanks mate
the link is dead...
never mind, it worked a couple of minutes later...
ya the link on their website for it isn't working.
Anyway it's nice they updated it with the new features.
Now if they would just give us lowly windows-mobile users that google-voice app that they released for everyone else.....
Sweet!
Having traffic accident info is EXACTLY what I have been hoping for.
Good F'n job Google!
Now if they can just integrate weather updates based on cell tower/gps location it would be brushing up against perfect.
(And yes I know Live Search/Bing already does this.)

You know das' right my man, I deliver! Can't claim I've got the fastest connection in the world (dsl...) but my server's had 100% uptime since I flipped the switch on for blownfuze back in december.
In google's defense you don't want to be giving out your new hot software to people unless you're sure you're giving them the right version for their phone's OS and with all these different browsers for all phones and I guess it's getting hard to tell what kind of phone they've got based on their http user agent. Almost everybody who uses winmo phones are not like us, don't flash new roms of new builds of different winmo releases, don't use leaked betas of browsers... still, why not let people download from their computer like everyone else who distributes software. For example, here's a user agent that just hit my server log:
"Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.2.13216/574; U; en)"
Hard to tell which OS that guy's running and google doesn't want to release crappy java versions of gmm anymore.
Doug
I hear ya.
Via devices ... makes total sense.
Via PC however, which is the only way I download CAB's, Google could save themselves tons of issues by following the lead of other manufacturers ...
Drop-Down List 1: Device (or O/S)
Drop-Down List 2: Language of GMM to download
Button: Download
... done. It's simple and requires no complex auto-detection, just a PC user who can read.
At least that's how it's done, I'm told, on Omicron Persei 8.

DUDE! We run similar sites! Except I support the T-Mobile Wing while you're all for the Fuze. But I've gotta say my site looks better: http://thewingster.com/
Hehe. That's cool that we ended up doing the same thing though!
And Screenshots of the new Google Maps: http://thewingster.com/googlemaps.aspx
Taken Directly from Googles maps page:
Supported Phones
Google Maps for mobile works on most phones, including those that run the below platforms. You can always download Maps to your phone using your cellular connection -- just visit m.google.com/maps on your device's browser, or send yourself a text message using the button at the top of this page. Some mobile phones also support the ability to sideload Google Maps onto your phone.
Android
BlackBerry
Java
Windows Mobile: Download Binary
Symbian S60 3rd Edition (most new Nokia smartphones): Download Binary
Palm OS: Download Binary
iPhone (pre-installed)
If you're not sure whether your phone runs one of these platforms, just try sending yourself a text message to get Maps. It will probably work!

Cool new free APP keeps vanishing !

I am a formula 1 race fan and the official website provides a rich and powerful java app for PDA's that is truly cool. It provides live timing, circuit data, weather conditions etc
See http://www.formula1.com/mobile_services/live_timing.html
The application detects I am downloading this to my HD2 and it installs well and runs quite well. However everytime I shut it down I have to go to the website to download it again !?
It doesn't appear in my installed applications list and I can't find the formula1.jar file it downloads.
Can one of the code gurus on here help track down where this app goes so we can have it all the time?
The only clue I can see is that it shares the same icon as the jblend application found in the tools section.
What is JBlend???
When I click on jblend I get the F1 2010 application appear with several options (one of which is local install) but nothing other than going to the full download works.
Can someone help please I am obviously not across the java implementation here
JBlend is a Java emulator.
Open it and your F1 app will be on list. Mark it and run - thats all.

A lot of people have had problems with the F1 live timing, the issue is Jblend. Install Myriad Java then download the Living timing again and it should work properly.
In fact I'll just upload the stuff

xavierdemon thanks for share! I did'nt know that there is some other Java emulator. I need it for emulate Java apps, which use Bluetooth - JBlend can't do that. I hope this one can. Thanks

Hi I installed it and can't find it anywhere in my programs list though it is listed on my installed apps list.
Also I deleted the app from JBlend but when I go to download the app from the website again it choses JBlend to use for the install.
When I go to run the app I get the same problem in JBlend.
What am I doing wrong?
Reset after installing Myriad and then just unzip the attached file and copy the contents to your device and run it.

Brilliant ! A nice shortcut in the program group has appeared!
How did you do that ??
How did you guys get hold of the Install file and how did you setup the install to ask the extra questions such as where to install the app so it appeared?
Why did the application writers not write it to do this!?
LOL lots of question there but as I said before it's a well known problem caused by Jblend being frankly just utter rubbish .
The Live Timing is awesome though adds a whole new dimension to the races .
Agreed re the awesomeness of the livetiming. I always watched the races on my PC with the full web version of live timing running side by side to the broadcast. Now I can sit in front of the big screen and just watch the live timing from my PDA.
Many thanks

Hey xavierdemon, I am getting prompted that a new version of the app is now available for download. I wonder if you could create a package like you did previously for my HD2 using the updated version?
I'd love to know how you did this so I can do this myself and I can stop hassling you my friend.
Just use this link
http://mobile.formula1.com/download/start/HTC-HD2/Formula1.jar
Thanks very much
quick question on the java side of things. Is there a sun java version for windows mobile still? i remeber having it my artemis but i can't seem to find a copy of it anymore.
The living timing app does sound cool, though. I think i'm gonna go get it and try it out this weekend. I'm also wondering if there is something similar for the Le Mans 24 hours. On that note check out radio le mans. I used it last year for the commentry and it was so much better than eurosport.
I also had problems with Formula1 and JBlend.
So I installed Java Myriad
With Myriad no problem using Formula1 (2010 App)
But I can not run.
When I open Myriad, I have my application but I do not know how to run it.
So every time I pass by the formule1.jar which retry installation, then launch it.
How to run it from Myriad or better make a shortcut to launch my application directly
coooool!!!!!

[Q] WP7 Update, possible on HD2?

Soon there will be an update released by Microsoft, which will add several features.
Will my HD2 (Live activated) be able to get that update directly, or is a new Rom necessary?
definitely won't be done directly
next to that
You are aware of the fact that when that update will be released, that your phone won't have the oppertunity to use Chevrons unlock software anymore.

I am aware, it is not such a big deal for me. The update will add Copy/Paste which is a more important future.
After the activation my HD2 is registered as an HD7. The update will be released by microsoft via a pop-up. But this will "brick" my WP7?
I think when the phone is live enabled it won't be a problem that chevron will not work anymore. The apps are installed from the marketplace and no side apps.
I would also be interested what happens when the update arrives.
You get a notification for the Update, but Updates are installed from a PC same as with WM6.5 or Iphone.
So I guess we will have to wait for a dump and new Installer from DFT. I hope the Activation keys will stay valid with the Update.
I'm really looking forward to faster app starts. Starting and resuming of 3rd party apps is way slow.
Why are you so sure that the update won't work directly? In fact the HD2 has virtually the same hardware as all currently available WP7 phones in terms of CPU, GPU, screen resolution etc. The update will come directly from MS so it is unlikely that there will be an IMEI check, new drivers and only OS changes. I don't really see a problem with the update if it doesn't go back to the bootloader but I'm pretty sure it won't go so far because MS are not going to mess around with the different bootloaders from HTC, Samsung, LG and Dell. Also bear in mind that the update MUST work with all OEM software and the operator bloatware
I wonder if the update will be mandatory and if MS will shut down access to Live if you don't update!
update probably means "new Rom"... and just like with wm6.5 will have to be flashed over your current rom, possibly they will add a backup function beforehand. so only question is whether or not DFT comes with a RUU equivalent of their DFI.exe so you can flash your own customized roms through magldr. remember there have probably been quite a few changes in this LEO70 rom like hardware key mappings etc. those do pose some difficulties in 'updating' your htc hd2 running wp7 as quite some things are incompatible with regular wp7 roms.

why should it?
i think the upcoming update wont be a problem for the hd2 users but just wait and see what happens
i think we don't need chevron.exe any more , we can dumb the update , edit reg edit to be hd7 ,and after that make the rom to be compitable with hd2 , that is all . chevron.exe is only needed for us to fake hd2 reg to be hd7 , we can do this reg edit to the rom dumb before inistalling it to the device , am i right

The software we have, it altered so it can run on our devices. (hardware buttons? anyone?) Any update can seriously mess that up of course
Though I don't know how they are going to push the update, we can't be sure of course.
WP7 updates are notified to the device via a toast notification. They are installed to the device via Zune i.e. the phone has to be plugged in to the computer.
If you check in Settings, it clearly says this. Or at least my (real) HD7 says that.

Except the hardware buttons! Remember the whole debacle about having the standard 3 buttons? An update coming directly from MS is not going to work. Period.
This is the bigger issue:
http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2...jailbreak-disabled-by-windows-phone-7-update/
Updating OS's is the least of our worries. Changing the device name to gain access to the marketplace will be the bigger issue.
I'm sure the dev's will figure something out.
only thing i think we should know is if the keys will still work if we update via MS.

I can tell you from a fact and as an owner of an ZuneHD media player since it came as well as owning the first generation fat 32 gig brown Zune media player that they don't force any of the updates on you. Seeing how WP7 depends on Zune software it might be the same story when it comes to updates but don't quote of me on that
^ On the contrary Microsoft always forces updates! Take the Xbox Live for example. To play certain games its compulsary for you to update! To sign on to XBL from the XBox 360, its compulsary to update else access to Marketplace is blocked.
So Im pretty sure Microsoft would block access to Marketplace until we update. But lets just hope thats not the case

That's kind of reassuring. I would love to install the update on my HD2, but I don't want to be the first to try it - not after the issues getting chevron to work reliably, i don't really want to start flashing WP7 again from scratch, i don't really want to go back to android on my hd2 either.
I suspect the update will be like the iphone ones, a smallish patch on top of the OS, and so potentially do-able on a HD2. Also, the iphone doesn't lock you out of the app store after an update, but slowly certain apps will be updated and ONLY work on the new updated OS. I think this is how WP7 will go.
No more Chevron means no more going back and forth between WP7 and Android.
I think I'm happy enough with WP7 to say goodbye to Android.
I just wish they'd fix this battery drain issue. I was getting double the life in Android.

Except the hardware buttons! Remember the whole debacle about having the standard 3 buttons? An update coming directly from MS is not going to work. Period.
This is the bigger issue:

Updating OS's is the least of our worries. Changing the device name to gain access to the marketplace will be the bigger issue.
I'm sure the dev's will figure something out.

i think we don't need chevron.exe any more , we can dumb the update , edit reg edit to be hd7 ,and after that make the rom to be compitable with hd2 , that is all . chevron.exe is only needed for us to fake hd2 reg to be hd7 , we can do this reg edit to the rom dumb before inistalling it to the device like we used to do on coocking wm6.5 roms edit its registery on computer before inistalling it ( it was edited before to be namd after leo oo7 ), am i right

I hope so, that would be great.

is Miscosoft becoming move evil?

I has not played with windows phone for a long time, just tried wp7 flash recently with HD2. damn, a lot tricky things.
- wp7 lock the SD card
- no file explorer.
- very hard to side load applications.
- cab file is not back compatible.
- certificate chain, Developer-uplock/ChevronWP7 unlock, Interop-unlock, FullUnlock.....
WTF are they trying to accomplish with all those limitations and making a system so complicated?
no wondering MS mobile market share is shrinking.

reading is blessing and knowledge.... you not read anything....
only BTTF ROM lock card.... others NOT...
yes, you have File Explorer, just need to install it or is already in ROM....
cab files is compatible with BTTF ROM....
no need any unlock for HD2 ROM-s.... is already unlocked....

- if you think all above listed items are not problems, why don't delete all other posts and leave the only candidate BTTF ROM or recommend BTTF as the best ROM in stick area.
- is there a BTTF 7740 rom? no, you had to upgrade from 7004-> 7403 -> 7720-> 7740
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236027
- I can't get 7004 BTTF rom working in my HD2 after 6 hours, it just freezes in home screen after reboot. Flashing any android rom is less than 1 hour.
- don't you see many dedicated threads about how to revive SD cards?
- side loading has to go through all those hassle, in android, just one check box.
- windows live activation, needs activation code and call customer service to get the code. WTH. signing in android market place is like a breeze.
- in all, just my $0.02.
- Market share is raising, not shrinking.
- SD card in BTTF rom can be unlocked by CAB
- Yes, BTTF rom is 7004 and it's tricky to get it working because of SD card, just read and you will get results
- Actually installing BTTF from scratch to 7740 is better for me, makes you feel more.. customizable, like you have all power of your rom in your hands
- Windows Activation is annoying, just get used to it like others did
- What is MS trying to accomplish? Well I guess to success... And I'm fan, I love WP7.
By the way... every system is complicated when it is not OpenSource.. just be glad to have all these amazing people here and stop complaining.

totally agree... people who not satisfied with WP7 have too much choice and can use what want... this is beauty of game...
i tried all of them and can say: WP7 is best...
idiot
iphone is wide open right?
all android have unlocked bootloader right?
..and I dont get what YOU are trying to say us here
Microsoft was trying to create a more user-friendly and stable OS. and they did it.
Increasing stability means you have to make restrictions. and they did.
You should stay with Android probably if you have a problem with this.
And as said above, Microsofts market-share is growing. It's always hard to start from scratch.
I has not played with windows phone for a long time, just tried wp7 flash recently with HD2. damn, a lot tricky things.
Well, getting an OS running on a device 2 years old that was never officially supposed to have WP on it can take a wee bit of time, it was never going to be easy, be thankful its possible at all
- wp7 lock the SD card
It sure does, its called security, its an SD standard, not a MS one, its just very few have ever bothered to use it
- no file explorer.
on the stock WP OS, you dont need one, if you do need one, then you can get one
- very hard to side load applications.
And MS should make it "easy" for us?, side loading couldnt get any easier, open up WPDM or WPPT select the XAP and click install, how much easier do you want it to be?
- cab file is not back compatible.
Im assuming you mean CABs from Windows Mobile? or perhaps do you mean new CAB installs only work on Yuki/xbox compatible ROMs?, if its the former then actually people are already looking in to making old WM programs work on here, MS doesnt have to provide Backward compatibilty, its a different OS, different APIs and file systems. If it was the latter then thats the nature of modding, we have two systems, a cab updatable and zune updatable OS, or an OS that has all the bits installed but requirers reflashing updates, its called having choice
- certificate chain, Developer-uplock/ChevronWP7 unlock, Interop-unlock, FullUnlock.....
Thats all done on some ROMs and almost done on others, you dont need to worry about it
WTF are they trying to accomplish with all those limitations and making a system so complicated?
lol, its only complicated when you try an do something with it that it wasnt designed for, as an OS out of the box its one of the most simple, quick and well desgined OSs out there, MS got its hands burnt with WM because OEMs and Networks screwed the OS sideways, it wasnt making that mistake again and i dont blame them
no wondering MS mobile market share is shrinking
Of couse MS market share dropping, with WM it was essentially the only PocketPC/Smartphone maker out there, it enjoyed ~90% market share, until everyone else copied it, an to be fair caught MS with their eye off the ball.
i don't know, forcing people to use the cloud is pretty evil in my opinion. all it does is make what was once SECURE DATA completely unsecured.
when the government wants to control the internet, all they have to do is stage a big hakkor attack on "the cloud" and everyone will be so outraged that they will support complete government control over the internet.
How are they "forcing" you to use cloud?

try moving phone contacts to/from a PC without using the cloud
try syncing outlook and calendar with your pc without using the cloud
try moving Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint documents to/from a PC without using the cloud
need any more examples?
Lol, I do all the time, its called exchange, and SharePoint. No one forces you, last time I checked no one held a gun to my head to use live, perhaps you'd rather google, oh wait a min... Funny thing with outlook, since I stopped syncing with it I've never had calendar miss match issues. Also email usually works just fine moving files about. Obviously exchange helps a bit here but no one is forcing you to use live or google
