Mango update - HD2 Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting an

After today's press conference it looks like there are many cool new features coming with the Mango update. I guess we'll have to wait some time to see it fully functional at our HD2
I can't wait!

I really can't wait either! God, I love my WP7 cell now! Can't stand using Android with all the bugs! MANGOOOO!

Moved your non developmental thread over to the general section.
Peace,
Josh

Any estimation of when this Mango will be avail in our beloved HD2?

We must wait for DFT Sir

Vegas?
We should have a bet going. Over or under.
Over = Mango on our HD2 on or sometime after Windows official release.
Under = Mango on our HD2 before Windows official release.
What do you guys think? Can we get a line at one of the casinos lulz!?!?!
My bet: Under, as I hope so because I don't know if I can wait more than three more months!

i would bet for "under" too, but if i had to pick a month it would probably be september.
i find it's very improbable for us to have it waaaay before the official release.
... just a gut feeling
edit:
then again, i might be wrong

That's great! If MS releases Mango to devs as soon as 4 weeks time, then hopefully someone or DFT can port it to our HD2 shortly after. But the thing is, i've heard rumors that DFT has Mango already on our phone. I haven't heard anything that is definite though.

So from what I gather, when MS releases Mango it will not include HD2 but we have to wait until someone port a rom for HD2?
I own a HD7 right now and unhappy with the phone because of no visible SD slot (unless I risk voiding warranty and mod it), no custom ringtone , no flash support, no bluetooth sync with my PC for file transfer... all of which Ballmer promises will be fixed in Mango. Oh and also no Android rom for HD7.
All of those reason make me wanna downgrade to a HD2 that has a SD slot and Android rom but my concern is it will take too long for HD2 to get Mango port.
Also, how stable is the Android rom for HD2? Particularly with Market apps. I once owned a Chinese clone of Diamond II dual boot with WM6.5 and Android 2.2, but Android on that phone can't use most Market apps.
What should I do? Keep my HD7 and have faith in M$ and Balmer to fix the issues or downgrade to HD2 now?

I think u should stick with the HD7! WP7 Mango update will be sweeeeet! I've personally tried everything from WM6.5, Android and WP7 on the HD2, and I think Android is the worst OS of them. It's slow and ugly looking.. I will stick with WP7 for now couse it has all the main features I need and it looks cool and it's FAST!

I've never owned an HD7, but I played around with it a few times. To be frank, there wasn't much to play with! WP7 fun is potential and not actual. I'd take actual over potential any day of the week. So, we'll need something in the meantime while WP7 can go from potential fun to actual fun. The solution for that would be Android. It's a no risk if on SD. Don't like a particular rom just erase it and get another one. Best yet, lets get 2-3 builds at the same time! What's great about that is your WP7 is waiting patiently for you with a simple reboot. Can your HD7 do that? No? Get an HD2 my friend! You may even venture onto Linux if you care to.

Very well put. Just a few questions:
1. HD2 WP7 rom is not offical MS release right? So when MS release Mango, HD2 will have to wait until someone cooks the rom?
2. Is there a likelihood or some project in progress to create English Android rom for HD7? Is it even possible to do this without a SD slot? I saw some youtube video of Chinese version of Android rom for HD7 but it's hard to tell whether it's a HD7 clone phone or a real one.
If it wasn't for Ballmer's promise of 500 new features and all the hype floating around, I'd have got rid of this HD7 long ago.

1. Correct, as WP7 for HD2 is not official, there might be some waiting time. NoDo was pretty fast, though.
2. Maybe there is a project, but afaik, nothing available yet.

I hope we get no updates soon, because looking at other HTC devices, I think HD2 has got only 1 chance of a big update and it shouldn't be wasted as 6.5.3. They will definetely release an update and the support called it Windows Mobile 7. I hope we get the better version (WP7S) and not the crappy Windows Phone Classic.
I really don't care, I haven't had an official rom on my HD2 since the HSPL was released and that wasn't going to change any time soon.

but remember porting wp7 will be much more harder than porting wm6.5 roms ( no backword comptability ,which means drivers and applications used to operate the device will not be exist (camera ,bluetooth , wifi , radio ,and more ) like the problems happening in porting android to other phones the mentiond apps doesnot work
Sorry, I should have made my viewpoint clearer. From what I have seen and heard of WM7, I'm not that bothered about it anyway. It looks like a step backwards to me, albeit one with lots of eye candy for those that don't look beneath the surface. Microsoft have seen Apple succeed with that viewpoint and want a slice of the action.
I can upgrade to a new phone in 11 months time, I will be happy for my HD2 to have the various cooks of 6.5.x until then.

Official HTC update to WM 6.5.3?

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows if HTC will be releasing the 6.5.3 builds of WM on the HD2? I prefer this build as it is more finger friendly and looks cleaner. Also is the any Clean 6.5.3 roms out for the HD2?
Thanks in advance.
I don't think we gonna get any updates for HD2 for WM 6.5.xxx..!!!

If T Mo US want to fork out a fat fist full of cash to MS, they might, but i'd give REALLY big odds that they wont. Why would they? they have sold out in the first week, thats their investment back, now all they have to do is sit back, wait for wp7 and start the whole circus again.
No one is going to offer upgrades, I suspect. The only way forward as i see it for 6.5.x is as a side line to the wp7. Maybe the 'business' range, alongside wp7 as the consumer range.

That does it for me, now i'm realy going to flash my device!
I have waited for a new HTC ROM update and wanted at least 6.5.3 on my device or even better 6.5.5... SO!
AND flashing gives me a faster better device, so! Thanks! And THANKS HTC!
I sent message to HTC. I asked when we get a new WM 6.5.3 on our HTC HD 2. They wrote me that they nothing know about new ROM updates for HD2.... So we must waiting, but if we don't get new WM from HTC in near future I flash my HD2
What is the point of these builds then? the only phone i know which will have it is that nasty sony ericsson trying to be a blackberry.
Great! WP7S is out of the question, and now 6.5.3/5 is out as well...
I really expected to a more finger friendly OS on the HD2...
HTC and MS are really working hard to make their customer go and buy an iPhone...

I think they are aming for us to buy the new WinMo 7 phones...
I'll be surprised if there isn't another ROM release. The stock carrier ROMs are quite a way behind those on unlocked phones for a start and I imagine there's a risk of losing customers to the competition if support isn't seen to be provided. My guess is that the various 'flavours'' of HD2 will be updated so that they have the same OS and applications.
Windows Phone 7 doesn't look appealing to me and if I want a locked down phone, I'll get an iPhone.
What does the updates do?
what are you complaing about from what i see wp7 is not very good. it looks ugly i heard it doesnt have file copy/paste etc. why would you want a phone that you cant move your files around. this is the perfect phone because it has all the power of the new wp7 series phones and theres a need to develop new software/roms etc. i think this phone is sick mate. im sure pretty soon they will get android up and running. forget wp7 i looking forward to dual booting android which whichever rom i take the liking too. my point is stop complaining and enjoy the phone.

This topic has nothing to do with WM7, This is about 6.5.3 which is an updated version of 6.5. Let not turn this into a 7.0 discussion.
Any news? How could be possible that we won't receive any new upgrade? Many manufacturers are upgrading their phones. Samsung Omnia II got WM 6.5.3, Toshiba TG01 will get Windows Mobile 6.5.5
Why HTC is so disrespectful of its customers?

They are, aren't they.
I enjoy hacking my phone but if the last update really is the last, I'll look elsewhere for my next phone. Mine still has bugs out of the box and I'd expect these to be addressed on a £500 device at the very least.
Leaving the HD2 in it's current state, with the underlying OS being touch unfriendly, is an odd decision. I wonder how long Windows Phone 7 will be supported. I fear another Vista. Will we be discussing Windows Phone 8 in a year's tIme?

Isn't that the point... WP7 will eventually lead to WP8, it's a moving target. If you want 6.5.3 or 6.5.5 you can install a cooked ROM that has it. The great thing is that... MS is continuing to develop the 6.5.X series and... the cooks are getting it to us.
My point isn't the inevitability of Windows Phone8, it's a question of how long 7 will be supported. Manufacturers seem to have forgotten that users have contracts with their phones and will need to keep them for 2 years or more before upgrading. The HD2 had very little support, leaving owners of this flagship device with an out-of-date machine after a few months. Other phone suppliers continue to provide upgrades to their ranges. I won't forget this when I need a new phone, especially since my phone still has bugs. HTC will lose customers. Whether they care about this or not is another matter but I'd aim to keep my customers in the current climate, even if I only sell each of them one phone every 2 years.
I'm waiting for a reply to my bug report.
We should all make some pressure on HTC.Send them e-mails, post on blogs, contact newspapers, etc etc...
HTC should change this their bad support. We buy a 600$ device and get a 6 month support, no upgrades (only bugfixes, and not for all bugs).
This is not what people expect from a company such as HTC.

[Q] WINDOWS PHONE 7 release on nov 8 on HTC HD7

I have confirmed that Windows Phone 7 is being released on several devices on November 8th. The tmobile version has two devices, the one that interests me is the HTC HD7 (and dell venue pro). Nice looking phone 4.3 inch screen, but major difference is it has three buttons (touch like the HD).

I actually just signed up to get a HD7 as soon as it's released. I keep seeing that there are too many driver/hardware compatibility issues to make wp7 work on the hd2...
A little f'd up because HTC hinted that anyone who bought the HD2 would be able to upgrade when wp7 came out...it's a good thing that we have great chef's otherwise the HD2 would be a waste

android on htc hd7 same as htc hd2??
now that this phone is coming out will it be the same process to run android on this new phone hd7, or is it more complicated then the htc hd2. are these the same phone basically spec wise except for touch buttons and a kickstand. lets strat the comparison, as i just ordered a hd2 to put android on it but not sure if the hd7 will run android better.
hd7 is not out yet how do we know if you can even run android on windows phone 7! we will all have to wait and see!
Hopefully our great devs here will be able to port wp7 over. Cotulla already got it to boot up on the hd2, which is a great sign. Considering the hd7 has the exact same hardware as our hd2, wp7 has the possibility to run great on our phones. We can only hope and support our devs. Time will tell.

You should get a native android phone if you just want to run android. Android on the hd2 will probably never run as well as native android phone... its always gonna be a hacked on version of android.

I'd be a little skeptical about trying the same process on the HD7, will an uploader work or will it brick the phone. we know what happened with the the hd2 hspl was neccessary. And, if the drivers are so different that the wm7 is incompatible with the hd2's hardware...i would assume just throwing the android we have now onto a diffent device is asking for trouble (althoug from everything I'm seeing, the hd7 is almost the same thing... i dont like the fact that the 16gb of memory is on board...will it have an sd slot?)
I'd wait until someone successfully does it

When I looked at the spec it look like it the same processor as my HD2 except for the button. So it can be program to use Windows Mobile 7 without programming the other buttong? Just curious. Can someone check it out? Thanks.
Oh you dear, sweet, uninitiated. Allow me to clarify some points:
1-WILL THE HD2 GET AN UPGRADE TO WP7
A-Officially, no. This was announced some months ago that the HD2 will NOT be getting an upgrade to WP7 from MS or HTC.
2-DOES THAT MEAN THAT A CUSTOM WP7 ROM WILL HAPPEN?
A-Maybe. As it has been stated, Cotulla has booted WP7 successfully on HD2 hardware, but it is uncertain as to wether it will work in day to day use. His team is currently VERY secretive about what is/isn't working.
3-WHAT ABOUT ANDROID?
A-I have always said, if you wan't Android, buy and Android device. WP7 will almost certainly NOT work with current Android builds. Different hardware, different drivers etc. Oh and WP7 is not compatable with CE applications...which means HaRET...and pretty much any program written for WinMo.
I hope that clears some things up!

I don't like WP7, frankly
No positive responses from microsoft
Even though porting of WP7 has been successful on device such as HD2, however, Microsoft seems not planning to help the developers and hackers in realizing the dream of running WP7, so most likely even if the porting is successful, most or some features and applications are NOT likely to work.

You should do some research... the port was successful and it runs practically the same as it runs on a HD7, except that the multitouch is buggy, we only have 2 point touch rather than the 4point touch native phones have, and the stock camera app doesn't autofocus because we don't have a dedicated camera button that can be pressed halfway down to initialize autofocus. But we already have a good camera app made that use autofocus and takes full advantage of the camera. We even have 720p video recording now on the HD2 with wp7, something we don't have with any other OS on the HD2.
And I would keep my HD2 over any other native WP7 phone even with those small issues... because unlike any WP7 phone, we can also run android off SD card, which also runs without hardly any issues and runs almost as good as a native phone. That more than makes up for any small issues that these ports have. The HD2 is like an EVO and a HD7 combined into one device... nothing out now can beat that!
Also, this thread is like 4 months old. There was no need to revive it.
Wow, way to necro a WP7 port thread from back in October, guys.
The year is 2011 AD...
Really, MS is missing the boat here... there are thousands of HD2's out there; and Microsoft neeeeds all the phones they can claim to be running their new WP7 platform so developers will be attracted to create apps for their sadly lacking app store. They should willing issue authorization codes (along with the appropriate "run at your own risk / we wash our hands of it / it's ALL your fault" disclaimer) to anyone who wants to flash their HD2 to WP7; and then, happily count that code as another phone running the new WP7. $$$
personally using wp7 on hd2 i found it awesome:
number of apps? 90% of iphone and android apps are rubbish (i tried a lot of them);
on wp7 i've all i want from my phone, i don't need android or winmo6.5;
but because wp7 is still buggy on hd2 (battery and multitouch) i've finally decided to sell my hd2 for 260€, and i've bought an lg optimus 7 for 240€... i was bored to flash a rom every week, and now i don't need to wait cotulla's work for an official update...
i think that microsoft should thank to cotulla and dft (and many other) for giving the opportunity of try this OS to the HD2 community (a community of developers and tester), I think it is an excellent springboard

Tested Windows 7 Mango on HTC HD2

Hi HTC HD2 freaks,
Last week I tested Mango on my HTC HD2 (EU).
After some work I succeeded with the installation
of Rom XBmod Yuki v.2 and updated with the original version
Updated with Zune. Please do not ask me how I did it because it was
a lot of work because I did not keep track of all I did during the installation.
I only want to tell you about my experience with Mango on my HTC HD2
First of all Mango is fast both not so fast as Android on my HTC (TyphooN CyanogenMod 7 v3.6.8) It looks nice and this OS is easy to work with the app`s from the market place where nice both there where many app`s I did not find yet.
Activation code:
Everythings works and I activated with an original HTC HD7 code that I got trough the Windows Servise Center in Germany, I am Dutch and I speak German. Well so I convinced the lady from Microsoft that I lost my Activation keys and if she make me a new activation code. The ask for your name and telephone number so a gave the a German name and telephone number I found on Google. She did not find the name so I said something most have gone wrong in the fist activation. So she made a new code for me and It work great.
So after a few days of exploring I changed back to TyphooN CyanogenMod 7
v3.6.8 because I mis the open source possibilities and the much more extended OS.
Mango Review:
Fast with nice Live Tiles no nice Themes.
Nice interface both not very adjustable not open source.
No nice widgets, no adding pages.
I did not like the Explorer 9 it is my opinion not very mobile friendly it duos not adjust the pages text like in Android. So no good and for me the most disappointing!!!
Not much text pasting possibilities.
Not so much sharing possibilities as in Android.
Conclusion:
Android will not loose many users to Windows Mobile and when the do many will com back after the experienced the OS.
Nokia will still going to cell less Smart phones because of Windows.
Android will go on winning more users and Apple will stay second.
Windows Mango we will see. It is a nice OS for non Android users!

OK, this is only your opinion.
I don't share this opinion.
I hate this public opinions on mobile OS.
Do you know why ?
Well it's up to user which OS looks to him the best mobile OS.
Everyone should work with the OS that can be the most efficient for his work.
Nobody can say WP7,Android, Meego,Symbian, OS X, are
bad OS. They have simmilar functions but in different UI and that's tha point.
Not everyone likes the same UI.
Thats my opinion and stop saying the your public opinion because nobody care. This is my advice.
There are always people that have to react because they feel affendid.
Sorry for all ho are!

Good for you mate, be happy with whatever you like most
I'm so glad I've chosen the HD2 over anything else 2 years ago because I could compare everything WM6.5 with everything Android for all this time.
This way I was able to find what's best for me... and that is Windows Phone
I think you can find some shiny glass icons if you look hard enough

It's because the way you write your piece, that might offend people.
You write it as your opinion has to count for everybody
You think Android is better for your HD2, which is fine. I am running official Mango now for 3 days and to be honest, I'm sticking with it.
If everybody would start a thread saying what OS they think is better, XDA would be a huge mess.
You stick with Android, if that works for you. No biggie
I tried various OS versions and builds thanks to my HD2 and I am forever grateful to the developers who gave us all an opportunity to do so on one device.
Up until Mango I was sticking with my Android Gingerbread build and the times I flashed Nodo and other WP7 variant I didn't last long and returned to Android because I missed the interface, the applications - all the lovely things that make Android such a fun OS to use.
When full, properly working Mango came along, the OS choice became much tougher, because I was quite taken by it. So here I am with the best of both worlds - Mango off Nand and Gingerbread off SD. During the day I switch back and forth many times, each OS has its advantages and I am glad I don't have to decide on just one.
I love my HD2!!!! Before I got it, I told everyone that it is a phone of my dreams. It didn't let me down.
WP7 + Android / HD2 =

I strongly disagree... Have dual boot WP7 + CM7 2.3.5 and all that I can say that Android behaves much better on HD2 than WP7. Android is much adjustable and flexible than WP7 which reminds me of an Apple (iPhone) limitations. Will wait for a stable version of Mango and will give it a shot then will write a comment about it

Well said mate
The beauty of preferential use. Some like chocolate vs. vanilla, and some like it swirled (a food analogy), my "swirl" is Mango via Yuki&XBmod back 2 future and American Android. Oh yeah, HD2!

My only stopper for adopting WP7 now is WIFI tethering. Have to stick with Android by now.
