Need help recovering a file... - Atrix 4G General

so i had a completely stock atrix as of a few days ago, and i decided to dive in head first and start tinkering. im rooted, sideloaded, and gingerblured. and i love it. its fantastic. my problem is that i took a picture of my girlfriend as my wallpaper before flashing gingerblur, and forgot to back anything up. well the flash wiped everything, my wallpaper didnt change, by luck... but i cant seem to find the file anywhere on the atrix. aaaaaand i dont have another copy. anyone have an idea on how i might be able to find it?

really? nobody has any clue?

There are numerous programs that will attempt to recover data from SD cards though I am not sure they will work if the pic was on the internal storage partition on your phone.

Its your girlfriend right?
Take another pic?

I dont remember if i stored it on internal or sd. But being as its still the wallpaper, it has to be cached somewhere, right? And while i could take another picture, perhaps i like the one i have. Id like to excersize my options before giving up. But thank you for that well thought out, very contributory answer shriva. Much obliged...

your missing his dilemma here. the wifey is gonna yell at him for not making sure the pic is safe! She will treat it as a bad thing!

Try this...
Hook it up to your PC and select "USB Mass Storage". Go to the drive representing your phone in "My Computer" on your PC. Use the windows search function to search *.jpg
See what pops up.

tried the above, but no avail. i was fiddling with root explorer and just kind of exploring things, is it possible its saved in a cache somewhere? i guess the fact that i dont know the file name doesnt make things any easier...

I'm out of ideas then. If you only want it for wallpaper then you could clear off a home screen and use a screenshot app to save a copy, but if it's scrolling when you switch home screens then you're going to miss some of it. Also, depending on your launcher you're going to probably have some visible icons in the dock.

Try this path using root explorer.
data/data/com.android.settings/files/wallpaper
There should be a file in there called wallpaper.
I would use copy though, not move.

Problem is i cant find any trace of gameboid in my file system anywhere. Anyone know where the save files go to? or where gameboid installs to?
i would just download one off the net , but thats dirty , and its kind of a rare game so i couldnt find any anyway.
I know this isnt a typical question and kinda nerdy , but at least its a break from froyo threads haha .

sweet! have you already tried using ADB to browse the system files / partition of your phone? You are not limiting your search to just the SD Card...right?
ABD: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875963
Didn't use adb, but browsed around in root manager. But I'm not real where to look. I found the apk haha. But no trace in the system. Still looking though

If it's like the other apps installed to the phone, it should save to /data/data/<name of apk>/ and if it isn't there, it may have made a directory on the sdcard.
Gameboid savegame files get saved in the exact same place as the ROM, wherever you put it. They're even suffixed as .sav.
You're Over analyzing this. The save states are on your sd card. Just mount your phone on your pc. Look in your sd card for the save states. If you can't find them I'll load gameboid up and find where it defaults to, but when I used nesoid I had to choose where my games where then the save states generate there.

were you successful in porting your save files to VBA? I want to do the same on my mac instead of my wii
actually , not yet . looks like vba and game boid do not use the same save state types . But i am looking into a way to convert them now . im pretty sure its possible. will report back when i have succeeded haha
Actually, i've been working on this.
I found the .sav file on my phone, copied it to my pc, did some linking stuff in no$GBA (just another GBA emulator), and was able to save it.
However, when you are trying to place the file back on your phone it won't be detected by Gameboid, it loads from the save file it keeps itself which is called a .ss0 file (first saving slot), when you delete the .ss0 file it also wont read the .sav file and just asks you to start a new game.
So now im trying to find a way to bypass / edit my way in so i will be able to throw back my .sav file to my phone to keep playing there, however not much succes there yet.
Edit:
Just figured out that i can turn off that the auto save will be loaded directly, so can "load" my own safe file first now, however the game says the save file is erased due to corruption or damage, so i will try to make a new save file using another emulater... will keep you guys updated
Very interesting. I'm having similar issues. Make sure to keep me posted. I'm still working on it as well. Surely one of us will figure it out.

Wallpaper location?

I was having trouble finding decent (HD) or there abouts wallpapers for the d2. Im about to sbf and cant seem to locate my current wallpaper again on the web, when I got it, I just long touched on the screen and chose save as wallpaper. Trying to backup all my stuff and for the life of me I cant find this dang file on my phone/sd card. Anyone know where its located? Thanks.

I'm curious where/how the wallpapers are stored as well. Just for kicks, I went to Google Images, searched dragon, and pressed and held a file named red-dragon.jpg, then selected Set as Wallpaper. Using Root Explorer, I went through every folder on my phone, excluding the ~/sdcard, searching for "red-dragon," ".jpg," and "dragon.jpg." None of which gave me any results.
So, sorry to say, but I think the D2 really likes to hide your wallpaper. :/
Did you know that you can actually google how to boil water? In any case, google is your best friend. Rarely picky and almost never down...anyways, back to topic:
I recommend googling: current wallpaper location android. The first hit helped me a little bit into it. It seems there is this folder called data that you can only access once you rooted your device. Since Im in no need to do so and myself new to android I leave you to do whatever you want with this information.
Im also sure that you will need a root file explorer...only guesses though.

Maybe you were too busy being smug to read my post, so I'll just give you the tl:dr version.
I searched through the entire /data folder with Root Explorer for ".jpg" and found nothing when I was using a "red-dragon.jpg" as my background.
Thanks for your mastery of searching on Google though.
I am not rooted but whenever I save wallpapers from the internet on my phone they end up in a folder titled downloads..that shows up in my gallery and when I look at mt sd card..check to cee if you have a folder titled that as well

I'm going to investigate this hunch further. I'll search the /system folder for all .xml files or database files. I can't say I'm an expert on the matter though, so... No promises on results.

I don't know if you are still looking for this, but if others stumble on this like I did, here's the answer. in the /data/data/com.android.settings/files/ folder there is a file called wallpaper (no extensions). it is actually a jpg file (if you copy it somewhere else and add a .jpg at the end you'll be able to see it)
@tsachi Here is my question: I would like all these lovely wallpapers I downloaded to show up in the dialog when I press Menu...wallpaper then hit the wallpaper button. The same default papers are always there and I would like to move my downloaded wallpapers to where ever that is.

Thanks tsachi. I was able to confirm this. I couldn't see the contents of /data with ES File Explorer, but I was able to do this through adb:
Code:
su
cd /data/data/com.android.settings/files/
cp wallpaper /mnt/sdcard/Pictures/wallpaper/wallpaper.jpg
exit
exit
Then I was able to look at it in any image viewer.
Not directly related, but I used adbWireless so that I wouldn't need to connect the usb cable and I'm using MultiPicture Live Wallpaper as my wallpaper switcher.

Hey there,
I wanted to set my Wallpaper manually to avoid cropping when choosing a file in the gallery.
On my Nexus 10 running Android 4.2.1 the wallpaper is found at:
"/data/system/users/0/wallpaper"
The file has no ending but is a jpg file (as sad by others).
If you want to exchange the file with yours remember to set the right permissions.
I dont know exactly how they have to be, but if you give all users at least read access it should work.
After a reboot the new Wallpaper should be set.
My wallpaper now has a resolution of 3966x2560 and there are no black bars anywhere. The system seem so crop it on the fly.
Confirmed on JB 4.2, the location is
/data/system/users/0/wallpaper
Copy wallaper to somewhere else and change its extension to wallpaper.jpg and you are done.

Saving the BackDrop Picture

Ok Im using the ROM listed below in my signature, and I'm getting ready to theme it with Androdena::Tek::Galaxy!
It has the blue background and custom Icons.
Anyway my question is how do save it? [BackDrop] And then restore this [BackDrop] picture after I theme it, cuz its gonna replace it with a shot of earth!
And I just cant part with this Beautiful Brunette!
isn't that your wallpaper?
Just get shootme and use it to take a picture of your desktop or just look into the wallpaper folder for that rom and put it in another folder

I already checked my wallpaper folder all of them , and she's no where to be found!
She's somewhere in the ROM program, but no where I can get to or find!
Also if I take a snapshot of her with the Widgets, that,ll be no good unless I remove all of them, theres got to be a way of accessing this wallpaper photo of it clean, so I can add it to my wall Paper Folder.

if that is the default wallpaper for the rom you will be able to find it in the framework-res.apk use your favorite method to pull the framework-res.apk from /system/framework either to your phone or your computer. then unzip either using root explorer or 7zip (just right click and extract with 7zip on pc) then look in /res/drawable-hdpi the wallpaper will be named default_wallpaper.jpg or something to that effect.
Cheers

Nice, thanks shreddintyres, that sounds like a viable option, my only ? now is what to use to pull the framework-res.apk from the /system/framework, the rest Ive got a grip on, but Ill start reading until I figure out exactly what you just instructed, haven't EVER dissected a ROM yet, so I need to learn, so I can retrieve that Wallpaper, of course it sure would've been alot easier if it had been in the wallpaper folder, but I'll be a good learning lesson. If i really want to customize this ROM the way I want!

I use Root Explorer. Works perfectly. I actually just used this same exact method to pull the default wallpaper from Trigger ROM.
Yeah its in the framework-Res.apk as default_wallpaper.jpg. I meant to include it and several other dark ones but must have forgotten to add them.
EDIT; I've added a zip file to the OP of Simply Honey Pro that contains the extra wallpapers I forgot to include, including the one references here.

just call me Shred
there are 2 methods that i like to use.
Using the phone as eminembdg said use root explorer (one of the most useful applications you will ever purchase for your phone) go into the system/framework directory then at the top of your screen there will be a button that says Mount r/w press that now you will be able to read and right to that directory (do not delete anything you will soft brick). now scroll down to find framework-res.apk long press and select copy then navigate to some directory on the directory /sdcard and paste.
Using the computer you will use adb. this requires that you have the android-sdk installed.
reboot phone into recovery (cwm recovery works the best)
open command prompt on computer, connect phone to pc with usb
navigate to directory where you have the android sdk then navigate to /android-sdk/platform-tools
execute the following commands
adb devices (this starts the adb daemon and allows will indicate that your phone and computer are communicating)
now execute the following command
adb pull /system/framework/framework-res.apk c:\<your chosen directory>
you now have the framework-res.apk on your computer
Cheers
It would be great for you , since you are interested, to try out those methods mentioned.
But... if all else fails, I could download the ROM and pull it for you, lemme know if you'd want me to do that for ya.
See my post above for easiest method.

With all due respect. I don't pay attention to whats posted down there when helping someone. A lot of ppl change their roms but don't change their sig.. Told ya the op would have most all the answers after all they made the rom
Thanks to ALL
To all the responders, appreciate all of ya, And Id like to pony up an apology to nomadrider123, I didnt mean to be rude, but after looking at it, [the responce] It certainly appears that way!
Anyway I got it done using a fresh download of the ROM , found the JPEG picture separated it, and uploaded it to the phone and then to my gallery, where it is now a file to be used as a wallpaper choice!
From there you choose it, and then Re-size it to fit right/save and there she is again!
Anyway Ive themed it already to a blue background, and then re-installed the Beautiful DAME as my wallpaper, and I now have a custom phone I really like and is easy on my eyes!
My only gripe now is I cant change the icons in TW, any suggestions on that?
IS TW a different animal, and needs a different software interface to MOD it?
And yes!! I'm a TW Fan. I love it! Navigates so fluidly!
I have installed on my phone ADW EX and Launcher Pro, And when I'm in TW GT Launcher I cant change the Icons, which doesn't make sense to me! So Ill figure it out or everybody here is quick with help! And Ill go with the soundest advice I get from Ya,ll! Again many thanks to all who gave!
Its a great feeling to customize my Business Tool, with minds all from all over the Globe!! Awesome community here!!
You have a couple of choices if your talking about changing your app icons. The first and simplest is to use ADW and chose a the with the icons you want. But since you like the TW launcher you'll have to change the icon of each app. You can open the AOL's just like you did to find the wallpaper. Same folder and its usually icon.PNG. if you use 7zip you can move the files around pretty easy. Just make sure and rename the new one the same as the old and stay away from the XML files unless your sure what your doing with it.
PM me if you or need more info.

[Q] Phone is not saving pictures anymore. After I reboot, they disappear...

Anyone know whats going on? I guess this has been happening for about a week. All my old pictures are there, but when I reboot, any new pictures I took will just disappear from the phone
Im also on EC05 / Syndicate 1.2. Never had this issue before though
Ok I did a full wipe... and now it deleted ALL of my pics... Whats going on???
All the folders and other things remained intact, but all my pics from the DCIM folder are gone. Even other pics like icons saved in a download folder are gone.
Always backup your card fire this reason. I had to odin back to stock and then root and reload srf. All my pics stay now. Not sure what caused it. Thought it was because it is a new sd card.

By "full wipe" you don't mean "Factory data reset" under Settings -> Privacy do you?
As far as the original problem is concerned is the issue that the files were actually gone from the SD card or just that they didn't show up in Gallery and what not?
When I said full wipe I meant through CWM, so it shouldnt have wiped my pics out like that. I did do a backup thankfully though its a couple months old so I lost a bunch of things.
Its the same SD card Ive used since November or so. I guess I will format the SD card fresh and then copy over what I had saved.
This problem has returned for me with new pictures. I dunno.
Is everyone having this using a theme?
I think theres a broken framework.

I'll ask again... Are the files being removed from the SD card or just from Gallery?
No clue with SRF but "Media Storage" should be running (Settings > Manage Applications > Running Applications).
Clearing the data for this app will clear out Gallery/Music/Video/etc (just the displayed items, not the actual source files). The media scanner should run (scan) shortly after booting and display a notification.
Not sure how to manually fire off the media scanner but if the files still exist and simply don't show up for you then this would be my first troubleshooting step (searching Google for "android invoke media scanner" pointed towards some apps/methods).
Maybe this helps, maybe it doesn't

Pop the card out and put it in a computer. See if the pics are on the card that way. It's possible they are on the card but whatever program you are using to look for them isn't finding them. for instance, if you are using Gallery and you have disabled media scanning then it will never know about new pictures.

It deleted them off the SD card permanently. I have no idea how it was able to do that. Every image no matter where it was saved on the SD card was wiped out.
Go into cwm and wipe cache and dalvik.

I tried that after I couldnt save my new pictures several times as well as trying fix permisisons. Nothing worked. I finally did a wipe of everything in CWM and reloaded Syndicate 1.2. When it loaded up all my pictures were gone.
Yeah I started about this in Q&A a couple days ago.
It cant just be a coincidence that its happening to us all at the same time.
Must be something were all trying out thats mmessing it up.
Only thing I can think of that I flashed last was that Heinz theme (which is beautiful if I may say so myself).
Whats the last thing you guys flashed before you got that problem?

Pop the card out and put it in a computer. See if the pics are on the card that way. It's possible they are on the card but whatever program you are using to look for them isn't finding them. for instance, if you are using Gallery and you have disabled media scanning then it will never know about new pictures.

Theyre completely gone. They dont show up in the gallery, file explorers, or when mounted to my computer.
I lost alot of pictures I took with my girlfriend on the 4th
I think this started after I installed some new themes- it was either Blue Myst or Shake + Bake. I didnt realize my pictures werent saving since I didnt reboot my phone for a while

Yeah the Shake n Bake is the Heinz theme I meant. Maybe thats what caused iit since The Root said the same tthing as well..
Shame because that theme is gorgeous.
We should all ttry Odin-ing than just flashing SRF 1.2 and a kernal and see how it goes for a few days.

I did. It works fine. Same with Emotionless Beast.

I have the above showing that its taking up 5GB on my Nexus 7, when I go to Settings > Storage >Misc files.
What is it? What app uses that?
Just wondering what to do about it.
Thanks,
Jon
Just a guess but may be for an RSS feed I would delete it if it takes up 5gb

I don't want to delete it, since it might mess up an app I am using. Rather, I would like to know what app its related to. Is there any way to find out?

Looks like it's for this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meecel.feedreader.RssDemonAd
Edit: Can't imagine for the life of me why an RSS feed app would take up that much space, unless it's configured to download and store content or something.

Nicely found and that helped, thanks. It didn't show under Installed Apps but showed under the All list, under MyApps. Not sure what the All list is meant to show? Previously installed apps?

Correct. If you no longer use the app, you should be fine to delete the data. As the above post mentioned, if in doubt you may just rename or move the folder first to make sure nothing breaks.

I can't seem to delete the cache folder as there are too many files in the folder. About 20K I believe. Any ideas on how I can get rid of it?

What file manager app are you using? Maybe try a different one, I like solid explorer and root browser myself.
You might also try connecting the tablet to a PC and see if you can delete it that way.
