GrooVe IP - Directly call US and Canada free using Google Talk - Optimus One, P500, V Themes and Apps

I have been looking for the Android equivalent of Talkatone on the iPhone for a while. Talkatone allows you to make direct calls via gtalk (without callback to cell phone which uses up cell phone minutes).
The Android equivalent App is called GooVe IP:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gvoip
Well worth the money!

But is not available. For India

There is also NetTalk. It's free and you can find it on the market or here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054337
I wonder if one works better than the other...

I am wondering the same thing. Here is one important difference.
Net Talk - You will not receive a phone number-outgoing calls only
GrooVe IP - app supports making and receiving calls using Wi-Fi and/or 3G/4G data connections. It works via Google Voice.
I think I will take a chance on GrooVe IP.

nettalk app doesn't make use of the proximity sensor so it kind of sucks in the respect that it leaves the touch screen functional while running. I've been bitten by this a couple of times...
I might try out grooveip as I've seen several people say that it's decent.
I WAS going to try out skype, but now that M$ got their sticky fingers on them...

I love groove. But 3g calling only works if your provider allows voip. And virgin doesn't.....

I'll have to try it, as other than not using the proximity sensor nettalk works fine for me on wifi, and with my usually crappy 3G here I don't believe that ANY app will work over 3G for me...
I'll post back with the results next time I use it unless someone beats me to it...

[Q] Receive Calls via VOIP 3G or WiFi on Galaxy Tab?

I bought my Galaxy tab last Friday and am determined to use it to get rid of my iphone 3g. I've tried a few different voip services but I cannot seem one that will allow me to send and receive voip calls over 3g or wifi. Does anyone know how I can do this?
Oh this is on a US T-Mo version
I had no isses getting several sip clients to work with my Ring Central account (monthly charge).
I am using Sprint. Any chance you didn't configure it correctly or that maybe TMO is blocking VOIP traffic?
Sorry, but t-mobile blocks voip so far as I can tell
Im using hacked skype. Working pretty darn well. I bought a skype number and have been using it all day, my bluetooth works great with it too.

I didn't think Skype worked via BT... How did you accomplish this?
Lol, dont know. Installed the hacked apk,Got my skype number this morn, then paid the 2.99 for a month, connected my bluetooth and called my wife. Works perfect. Well, there is a of course the small delay. Other than sucking up alot of data, its a perfect work around for now.

It was OK when I tried it over WiFi, but it never worked over 3G for me as the coverage here is awful. Also, the app doesn't use the proximity sensor and I never found a way in settings to lock it, so once it ended a call abruptly and had a bunch of characters in the dialer...
Going to try skype again, unfortunately the 3G access probably won't do me much good...
please attach it here if it's free?

Pretty sure you have to register on the NetTalk website first, then activate your account with the link they send to your email address. Then you can login with the app on your phone.

Thanks , I registered and activated it at their webside. I put the user name and password, was told register error, and asked me to check the setting. However, when I check the setting, there isn't much you can change. Even I want to make any change, the nettalk will crash. I am still using the original Android with the phone, and I don't know if that make any difference.

I will be travelling to many countries and do not want to rack up any high data bills, so I want to be able to text either on Airplane Mode or with my sim taken out of my phone. I tried to do that experiment with a Google S phone but it also does not work on any of the FREE Texting that I have tried. The only one that seemed to work before was TextPlus and now this App cannot be downloaded on an Android. This TextPlus is now only for I-Phones, I-Pads etc.

How can I read and reply to SMS messages from my tablet?
I saw an app in the Android Market called SyncMS.
The latest reviews said it is not working as it should.
I'd hate to purchase it and not having working properly.
Has anyone tried it, or know of another app and method that works?

I'd take a look at DeskSMS.

I have syncsms and it works fine but you need dropbox as well as the messages go through it. Another good one is textab. That one connects phone through bluetooth instead of using dropbox. Pretty handy.

Jokes aside, yes a cell phone would be better.
According to some, VOIP programs can have shotty call quality (for both you and the person you're speaking to). But if you're hell bent on it, there's an app that takes advantage of google voice (free) that has ads (pro version = no ads), and isn't that bad for just the ads. Link here
As for text, i believe many people use whatsapp but I've personally never used it, so I'm not sure how it works or if it will work in the way you're intending / interested in.
Hope that helps some.
